Zero Time Dilemma arrives in the West on 28th June, providing a concluding part to the Zero Escape series. For fans of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward it's a hugely exciting prospect.
With the release so close Japanese publisher Spike Chunsoft has released new trailers showing the same tense scene on 3DS, Vita and PC (where it's being released on Steam). In light of various promotional videos showing the Vita or PC build, it's a welcome opportunity to see the 3DS version beyond some screenshots.
On 3DS it looks ok, though there's no getting around the fact that there are some problems with lighting and textures on the dark background, particularly. It's a reflection of the ageing technology of the 3DS, perhaps, though it shouldn't ultimately detract from the most important aspect of the series - storytelling.
Below is the 3DS trailer:
And the following is the Vita trailer:
The difference is clear but, ultimately, it's good news that this third part in the series is coming to the 3DS so soon - will you be picking it up?

There may appear to be a difference, graphically, but I want to play this game on 3DS b/c some of the gameplay will take place on the bottom touchscreen. The 3DS setup fits these adventure/puzzle games perfectly.
Already have it pre-ordered! Virtue's Last Reward was definitely the best in the series so far. It'll be pretty tough to live up to the expectations of that game. Based on the trailers, it seems the voice acting isn't quite up to par with Virtue's Last Reward, but it still seems pretty good. Cindy Robinson did such an amazing job at Zero Jr., it's almost impossible to beat that.
I need to get back to Virtues. I did one part and the story ended. I guess that's just one of many endings and ill need to do all those different choices to see the whole game. That comes first of course as this looks great!
Whoa! I didn't realize it was coming so soon! While I'm not going to get it, I am very interested in how the story will tie into the other games in the series.
i've put SO MANY HOURS into vlr and still haven't finished. i'm running out of time!
@Spoony_Tech I'll just say this: the entire game is one connected experience, and you have to complete multiple paths before you even begin to get a sense of the game's true narrative structure.
Also, I recommend beating all of the puzzle rooms on hard at least once and getting all of the gold files. You'll unlock important stuff at the end of the game.
@PtM It's a portable video game system released by Sony.
Can't wait, that watch is going to look great on me! Oh and the game looks great too
@PtM
Vita is great, a lot of jrpgs and other great games like senran kagura, gal gun, disgaea...
Can't wait to play it, but I'll have to, I'm still trying to get to the end of Fates and after that Tokyo Mirage awaits me, I really have Zero Time for this too XD
Still not got round to finishing VLR because it perma-killed me for curiously reloading a save to see the other option.
I wanted to play it on 3ds but only digital in europe so i'm importing the vita version because I want the physical version (already have 999 and VLR in my collection)
Man, I wish I could've gotten the pre-order watch for this. Loved 999 and I'm maybe two thirds of the way through VLR and loving it.
I got this preordered and I can't wait to play it. I have also Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Lego Star Wars preordered. June is a busy month for me although July is just as busy since I have MH Generations, 7th Dragon 3 Code, Return to Arkham and Fairy Fencer F preordered too.
I'll be getting this on Vita, as it's clear which system was the lead development platform. Also, it might sound petty, but I like getting a platinum trophy when I play the heck out of a game.
@nathatruc I'm gonna do that too!
Has a price been announced yet? A Google search yielded nothing.
@Mrkim $39.99 in the States, which is standard MSRP for portable games. Only company that doesn't seem to really follow that is Atlus.
Hopefully it's cheaper on 3DS, it does look way nicer on Vita. Doubt it though!
@mid_55 All versions are the same price.
Can't wait for this... must know what happens. The story in these games are the reason I play them 100%, some epic story telling along with some great music that fits the game perfectly.
It's an obvious observation comparing 3DS & Vita games regarding graphical difference (something we've known since their respective launches) Coming from someone who plays both systems, the 3DS version still looks impressive. In fact I encourage 3DS owners to get ZTD for that system in they don't have a Vita. :3
I'll be getting is for my 3DS
I got total blue balls for this game
Are the first two available on the EU eshop?
Ugh so many games to finish...
@Nin10doh VLR is available in the eShop. 999 on the other hand was never available in Europe, but since it's a DS game you can import it. ZTD will be available for pre-download soon.
Doesn't like the physical copy is coming to Europe anyway, I'll just download it on steam. However, if by any change there is , I'll definitely get it for 3ds.
I was considering it before, but after seeing this, I'm definitely buying the Steam version. I love my 3DS but with this game being so focused on the cinematics, I can't justify the much worse graphics.
Hmm. I'm not sure what version I'll get, but I'm leaning towards Vita. Otherwise I'm stoked.
I agree, there would be some gameplay elements I'm sure that will benefit from the dual screens. Also, don't forget, 3DS = stereoscopic 3D which is the trade off for HD goodness. Also, since I've got the first two parts for DS/3DS as well, I wouldn't get this for Vita now. Unless there are some clues you will miss because of the muddier graphics, 3DS will be just fine with me.
What is the price going to be in Europe? Same as VLR?
@Hey-Cha-La
Iirc there is no 3d due to limitations.
Seems like a fun game. Wont beplaying it though. Graphics look nice on both system, Obvious that it looks better on the Vita but its more because of resolution then it is in textures. 3ds is actually keeping up well after almost 5 years.
@Cestius
Hi, thanks for the info, I'm a bit disappointed in that, but not a chance of me cancelling my preorder. When you first said due to limitations, my first thought was that it's a visual novel, but I guess there's a lot of cut scenes and voice acting.
@Moon That's not a thing. Savescumming is part of the Zero Escape experience. You're supposed to reload your saves to view other outcomes.
I'll be getting this on Steam, that'll probably be the best version to get.
@Tm080201 strange. I was a few hours in and then I made a decision on something and was curious of the other option. I'm pretty sure it deleted my save and I was unable to go back...
@Moon If you notice, there's the flowchart in the game. That shows you where you are in terms of the branching storyline. If you save and jump to another branch, you should be able to jump back.
@Tm080201 I'll give the game another shot with this in mind. Thanks.
@Moon You're welcome!
Word of advice: Try not to save during the puzzle sections, only during the story mode.
ESPECIALLY do not save in the Pressure Exchange Chamber. There is a game-breaking bug that happens if you save during this part that Chunsoft was never able to patch.
@Tm080201 Game breaking bug? Oh no! What happens? Thanks for letting me know. I'm a bit worried I won't know when it's safe to save now =/ lol.
I appreciate the heads up though - I will likely jump back into the game tonight. I find all the reading involved makes me kinda sleepy!
@Moon Basically there's a bug in the English 3DS version where if you save during the puzzle section of the Pressure Exchange Chamber, your save file becomes corrupted. It happened to me and it sucked.
Just don't save during that part. Otherwise you should be fine.
