Mortal Kombat fans are understandably eager to find out exactly what developer NetherRealm has been working on since the spectacular Mortal Kombat 11.
The general consensus is that the team is currently gearing up to reveal Mortal Kombat 12, but according to creator Ed Boon, we shouldn't expect an announcement anytime soon; at least, not until the series' 30th Anniversary celebrations are all done and dusted.
Speaking on Twitter (thanks, VGC), Boon acknowledged fans' excitment for the inevitable game reveal, but urged the community to temper its expectations, explaining that the anniversary celebrations will take precedent for the time being:
The original Mortal Kombat launched in arcades back on October 8th, 1992, so logically, the anniversary celebrations may end as soon as this week, but chances are Ed Boon and NetherRealm will want to carry on the festivities for a little while longer.
Nevertheless, a new game announcement is likely on the horizon, and we're pretty confident that it will be Mortal Kombat 12. As for whether it will arrive on the Switch? Well, that's another question entirely. We're sceptical, but then we didn't think Mortal Kombat 11 would launch on Nintendo's console either. How wrong we were!
Are you looking forward to hearing what NetherRealm has been up to? Well "get over here" and let us know!

It would seem silly to release MK at the same time a new SF is coming out- there just isn’t a big enough fan base of fighters to support 2 games at once these days.
I’m really curious on what it will be, injustice 3? Unless they said that’s not what it is.
I would love it to be a licensed fighter!
The last instalment was just more of the same. They really need some time to boost their creativity.
@MrGawain Don't forget Tekken 8!
I love Netherrealm, they are the king of fighting games to me. I'm a huge fan of MK but I would like to see Injustice 3 before we get MK12
I'm still holding out hope that it'll be Shaolin Monks 2.
There’s been MK30 celebrations?
Really for the time being I kind of just want a port of 9. It's really unfortunate how difficult to access it is at this point, your only options are either PS3 or Series X.
MK Peak at X/XL
MK11 was a let down to me, hope they get it right this time
I say it's high time we had an MK compilation! You could have at least MK 1 through X on there! Maybe throw in Shaolin monks for good measure! Heck I'd even take MK mythologies!
So where is a Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection. Give us the first 3 games from Snes plus Ultimate. Give us Trilogy and both the N64 and PS1 versions of the Mythologies Sub-Zero game. Arcade version of MK4 and maybe most importantly of all, a remaster of Shaolin Monks.
Would be crazy if Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Mortal Kombat 12 all launched next year.
As a Nintendo-only gamer, and a MK fan, I would like more than anything to get ports of the good MK games that we missed, MK8 MK9 and MKX.
The Switch should be able to run those like a dream, and I won’t have to deal with season passes or other microtransaction garbage.
I've always loved the Mortal Kombat franchise, definitely my favorite fighting game series.
I just want the original arcade versions of MK, MK2, and MK3.
We should get ports of older MK games on Switch. Like MKX and MK9
We love to get upgrades on MK1 to 4.
Even we could get MK Trilogy for N64 Online.
I feel Mortal Kombat was treated way better when they were own by Midway. When they got bought by Warner Bros., it doesn't seem like WB care much about the series. Heck the series wasn't even represented in MultiVersus and WB wants nothing to do or bother to celebrate Mortal Kombat's 30th anniversary at all with any games, remastered, or remakes. Ed Boon and Netherealm Studio needs to leave WB and then go join Embracer and have them buy Mortal Kombat away from WB.
@gaga64 I was thinking the same. Way to celebrate while doing nothing.
I guess they'll release a kollection of games soon, because this celebration so far, has been awful hahahaha.
Or for it to be on switch when it is the current one doesn't perform very well on it as it is
@abdias so was Splatoon 3 , Forza horizon 5 , gran turismo 7 the list goes on
@gaga64 The only thing I know of is the 30th Anniversary Arcade1Up cabinet, but that's it.
@Half-ShellHero
“First three SNES games….”
Or they could give us the arcade games? As much as I did love MK2 on snes, the less said of MK1 on the platform the better. MK 3 was an admirable effort, but it was miles behind the arcade game, itself very average.
They should make the sequel of shaolin monks.
There's actually a Mortal Kombat Animated Movie coming out next week, maybe that's the celebration....🤷
@Serpenterror maybe MultiVersus is targeted for other audience or Netherealm didn’t agree with the implementation.
Or, we will see something for the anniversary. Seeing that a new movie was just announced makes me think WB does care a little about Mortal Kombat. ☺️
@Lizuka I have it on the Vita, and I adore it.
@Half-ShellHero The only game worth owning from any of the ones you listed is Shaolin Monks and the OG trilogy. The others are absolute ass.
@Scrubicius Of course a new MK movie had to be announce since the last movie ended on a cliffhanger. I believe that's the only reason they make a new movie so to continue on from the last one, not because WB care about MK but because they had to finish what they started since the movie had a deal agreement to it. MK's 30th celebration should be a big celebration, not some movie or animated show. It needs to give its fans the anniversary they deserve so those fans would stick around for another 30 years. Big anniversary could be celebrated by remastering collection of the first 5 MK arcade games and/or remastering of classic games like MK: Shaolin Monks.
@LikelySatan To each their own.
@BanjoPickles Of course the arcade ports would be ideal. I just said Snes because that's where I played them the most.
