Re: Every Yoshi Game Ranked

lacaras4

Yoshi's Story is a fantastic game, it can be really easy or very difficult depending how you decide to play the game and it's designed to be replayed over and over.

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

lacaras4

For modern consoles, I lean more digital, it's just more convenient, and I don't think concerns about not being able to redownload games is any more impactful to digital games than physical in a world where 95% of games have day 1 patches, physical games are just digital games that take up physical space instead of digital storage. Plus I also don't care about not being able to redownload games in the future because shutting down the ability to do so is just a green light to pirate whatever you want imo.

Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle

lacaras4

2022 was great for the Switch. Honestly I really don't want a new console from Nintendo yet, I'm still enjoying the games coming out on Switch and Nintendo releasing a new console right now just means I have to spend another $300 or whatever so I can continue buying Nintendo games. I think Switch games look fine for what they are, graphics don't really matter to me as much, and tbh I've had a hard time telling much of a difference between consoles since the PS3 era, the technological leaps since then have produced excessively diminished returns compared to the generations prior. Like yeah, side by side I can tell the difference in graphical quality between a PS3, PS4, and PS5, but in the heat of gameplay? I don't really give a crap, it all looks good to me.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

lacaras4

I go through this same line of thinking whenever wanting to start a new long running series, but I try to remind myself that most series of games are only loosely connected at best, and older games can be frustrating. For long running series I'm familiar with I can't honestly think of any that I'd recommend someone completely new to the series starting from the very beginning.
Mario - start with Super Mario World
Zelda - start with A Link to the Past or Wind Waker
Metroid - start with Super Metroid, Zero Mission, or Metroid Prime
Fire Emblem - start with Awakening
Shin Megami Tensei - start with 3, 4, or 5
Persona - start with 4
Famicom/Advance Wars - start with Advance Wars I guess that qualifies as a first release if you ignore Japan exclusive games
Tomb Raider - start with the new trilogy
Sonic - start with 2, 3, or Mania for 2D or Generations for 3D

With all that in mind why do I want to start series from the very beginning? I have no idea.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

lacaras4

I love them all, so it's really hard for me, but I'm going to say SNES. Honestly the only generation I don't care for much is NES, it was my first console I played, but I really don't feel most of the games hold up very well anymore, there are a handful that do, like Zelda and Mario, but even major IPs on NES are kinda bad by today's standards like Metroid and Castlevania (don't get me wrong I like those games, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone unless they were super interested). Gameboy I think fairs a bit better but only really because of the late releases/backward compatible GBC games. Never played a Virtual Boy so I won't comment on it. I really like both the N64 and GBC, N64 has some of the best couch multiplayer games of all time that are still super fun at parties today (the GameCube also is great in this regard). The Wii was just okay, but the DS was fantastic with tons of very unique and fun games. The Wii U and 3DS was peak Nintendo on weird and fun games, and the Switch had been a factory of new games, though it seems Nintendo has been playing the Switch with more safe releases, but it's been working for them. But something about the SNES... It might be some nostalgia, but I really think it was the pinnacle of 2D games, developers had really figured out the basics of controls and such by the time SNES came out, which led to a lot more experimentation that paid off with experienced developers.

Re: Video Game History Foundation Calls Out Nintendo's "Destructive" 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure

lacaras4

As someone interested in (and invested in) game preservation, I think a lot of people are thinking about digital games all wrong. IMO there isn't a difference between Nintendo stopping sales on the eShop and discontinuing production of physical games. From a preservation perspective, you back up games, regardless of their source. Why would anyone rely on a single company to preserve a game? If you want to preserve a game you don't just hope that one company keeps the server alive where the game was sold from, you buy the game and make backups.

Re: Poll: Will Mario Kart 8's Deluxe Booster Course Pass Make You Buy The NSO Expansion Pack?

lacaras4

It's a step in the right direction. But being that the expansion pass is $30 more per year and the dlc is $24 once the numbers still don't add up for me. I don't really care about the Animal Crossing dlc, and while the N64 games would be nice to have, I have other (legitimate) means to play all the games on there, also don't care about Genesis games. This combined with some more new incentives might make me bite, but as of now I'd be content just buying the Mario kart dlc outright

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2022 Nintendo Direct?

lacaras4

Loved the direct, really excited for Kirby and Splatoon 3 most of all. Honestly I didn't even really notice the music in the Splatoon 3 trailer the first time I watched it (was watching on mobile, so my sound was probably kinda low), I had to watch it again to figure out what people were talking about. I love how it starts normal and just devolves into chaos, fits Salmon Run pretty well I think. Not sure what to think about Switch Sports yet, I don't think I'll get it, but I'll keep an eye on it. Happy to see the return of the Mario Strikers games, but I probably won't have the time to play it this year. Happy to see Earthbound + Earthbound Beginnings on NSO, but I'm still wanting Mother 3... I guess it's something. Triangle Strategy looks interesting, I'll try the demo. Front Mission also looks interesting, but I'm thinking it may come to PC, so I'll get it there. Live A Live doesn't look like a game I'd enjoy, so going to pass on it. Advance Wars looks great, not sure if I'm going to get it yet or not though, I have the originals. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I'm interested in, but I've had a hard time getting into the series in the past, I think I'm going to give 2 another shot before considering picking up 3. Metroid Dread updates are welcome, I'm interested to see how Dread Mode might influence speedrunning. I never got to play any of the Klonoa games and they look right up my alley, so I'm definitely keeping an eye on those. Fire Emblem Warriors I will see what people say about it, getting tired of Dynasty Warriors type games, so probably going to be a pass. I don't really care about Chrono Cross, MLB, No Man's Sky or any of the others.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Sticks With Mario Kart 8 Through 2023, But What About Switch?

lacaras4

I feel like I'm the only person in the world that doesn't want a Switch 2 anytime soon. Games for the Switch are awesome, why would I want to buy a new piece of hardware to continue buying new games? We're to the point graphically where hardware improvements are delivering heavily diminished returns, sure new hardware will look better (better framerates would be nice more than anything), but if I want amazing looking games I'll just play them on my PC....

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Is Finally Getting DLC

lacaras4

Might actually consider the expansion pass. But only $24 is an amazing deal for 48 tracks, don't need MK9 at this point. I can't believe their making DLC for MK8D, a game that is a rerelease of an older game with its DLC, that has been out for a few years with no DLC yet, crazy times.

Re: YouTube Confirms Copyright Claims On GilvaSunner's Channel Were From Nintendo

lacaras4

Of course Nintendo is within their right, but it just sucks that they don't make their music available via any official means. I can hope that this takedown is a signal that they are about to add their music to streaming services or something, I don't think that hope is too far out there either, Nintendo kinda did this before, they sent a C&D to the project team behind AM2R shortly before announcing their own Metroid 2 remake, so maybe...

Re: Sword & Shield Becomes Second Best-Selling Pokémon Game Of All Time

lacaras4

People hate on sword and shield way too much. I didn't buy them when they released, partly because of the hate, but mostly because sun/moon burned me out with its long cut scenes and its aggressive hand holding. I just bought sword a couple weeks ago because I was feeling an itch to get back into VGC. Playing through the story I'm honestly surprised how much I like the game. The graphics are actually really appealing and some areas are really pretty. The variety of Pokemon available to you from the very beginning is really nice, you can build a full diverse team early in the game. The XP system doesn't feel nearly as broken as the 3DS games, with wild Pokemon and trainers keeping up with the level of your team very well. The story elements while still numerous don't feel as drawn out as sun/moon, or maybe it's because I like the characters more. The game still holds the players hand a lot, but it doesn't feel as in your face, sun/moon felt like a tour instead of an adventure, sword/shield feels a little more like an adventure.

Even though my primary goal is playing competitive I gotta say I'm enjoying the single player experience.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Mastery Of Physical Game Sales Hides Limited Digital Growth

lacaras4

@BloodNinja afaik you can still download games from the wii shop channel (and maybe dsiware on DSi?) as long as they were games you purchased before the shutdown, you just can't buy anything anymore.
Also I recall Nintendo giving a pretty considerable discount on Wii U Virtual Console games that you owned on the Wii Virtual Console, which I thought was fair because they added features to the Wii U versions. Also Nintendo allowed users to carry forward DSiWare games onto their 3DS.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Mastery Of Physical Game Sales Hides Limited Digital Growth

lacaras4

A few thoughts I have on the whole Physical vs Digital conundrum. I have purchased both physical and digital games on the Switch, my reasons for one vs the other generally boils down to this: Most of the time I concentrate on playing one game at a time, it makes it difficult for me to complete games if I get sidetracked playing other games constantly because I forget how to play, what I was doing, and whatever, so for most games, I buy physical because I'm not going to be swapping cartridges all the time. The exception to this is games that I know I will play consistently over time, games that I do play while playing other games, usually because of a multiplayer component or similar features that encourage continued play. This is why I buy some games digitally like Pokemon Sword, Animal Crossing NH, Splatoon 2, etc, because I go back to them frequently this helps me avoid having to switch cartridges all time. Concerns regarding longevity of digital games, I'm not sure how much better physical games today fare overtime either, most games have day 1 patches, downloaded components, or dlc that aren't likely to be available either if the digital games aren't available. N64 games are fine today because digital downloads weren't a thing in the 90s (at least not like today). Concerns regarding being unable to resell digital games (something theoretically possible with NFTs, but that's a different discussion if that will ever happen), I don't really care because I have literally never sold one of my Nintendo games, and don't anticipate ever doing so.

Re: Talking Point: Are You A 'Complete-In-Box' Or 'Loose Cart' Retro Gamer?

lacaras4

Depends on the system, anything that came with a plastic case ie genesis, ds, any disc based system, etc CIB is a must (maybe I'll forgive a missing manual if everything else is in good shape or the price is right). For aftermarket boxes I actually like them quite a bit for N64 and GBA, they look nice, they work, and I would just rather have a plastic case than a cardboard box for these systems (as they are a couple of my favorites to collect), always look for official manuals on these though. Anything else, like SNES, NES, Famicom I don't care if it's CIB or not, they aren't systems I collect much for anyway.

Re: Talking Point: The Problem With The X Button

lacaras4

I'm used to Nintendo's layout the most, but it only takes me a few seconds to get used to a PlayStation controller. I seldom play Xbox (and I have never owned one), so when I do the button prompts tend to trip me up since they're all the same names as Nintendo controllers, but backwards. I play on PC quite a bit, and the standard configuration for most games on PC is based on an Xbox controller, but I just change the button mappings (or use Xpad (8bitduo app) if the game doesn't support remapping) and I'm g2g
