Update #2: Nintendo has now released the official translation of the Q&A portion of its financial results briefing, and we can now see Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa's comments in full:
The metaverse has captured the attention of many companies around the world, and it has great potential. When the concept of the metaverse is introduced in the media, games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons are sometimes brought up as examples. In that sense, the metaverse is of interest to us.
But at this point in time, there is no easy way to define specifically what kinds of surprises and enjoyment the metaverse can deliver to our consumers. As a company that provides entertainment, our main emphasis is on ways to deliver fresh surprises and fun to our consumers. We might consider something if we can find a way to convey a ‘Nintendo approach’ to the metaverse that many people can readily understand, but we do not think that is the situation at the present time.
Update #1 [Thu 3rd Feb, 2022 11:00 GMT]: Nintendo has now released the Japanese version of the Q&A session during which it was reported that the company "has interested" in concepts such as NFTs and the Metaverse.
Twitter user Nibellion has used machine translation to get a more accurate picture of what was said:
We've updated the title of this piece to better reflect Nintendo's response, and apologise for any confusion caused.
Original Story [Thu 3rd Feb, 2022 11:00 GMT]: NFTs have been a hot topic lately, with the most recent drama being Team17's announcement (and then cancellation) of its own line of non-fungible tokens.
During a Q&A session that followed Nintendo’s latest financial results, one of the questions related to the topic of NFTs and the 'metaverse'.
Analyst David Gibson, who was in attendance, reports that Nintendo's response wasn't one of instant dismissal and that its main point of interest would be the metaverse (thanks, VGC):
It's not a particularly surprising reply – after all, Nintendo is in the business of making money and will legitimately be interested in any new technology which enables this – but it's clear that the company is taking a cautious approach to both concepts.
The 'metaverse' is best described as a network of 3D virtual worlds that are focused on social connection, and the term – which was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash – has become something of a buzzword in recent times thanks to companies such as Facebook. While the notion of the 'metaverse' is something that's seen as a social tool, many firms are clearly looking at ways they can generate revenue using the concept, and it would seem that Nintendo is no different.
With regards to NFTs, the public response has been quite vitriolic. Alongside Team17, which has arguably done harm to its brand with its aborted NFT plans, voice actor Troy Baker withdrew from a deal that would have seen voice samples minted as NFTs, following an overwhelmingly negative reaction online.
Companies such as Konami, Square Enix, Sega and EA have all expressed interest in NFTs recently, although Sega has stated that it won't pursue the idea if its fans are against them. However, Ubisoft has said that fans currently don't understand the benefits of NFTs.
If you're still confused about NFTs, feel free to check out our feature which attempts to explain them.
An official transcript and translation of the Q&A call will likely be released in the coming days. Elsewhere on the call, Furukawa reiterated that Switch was "in the middle of its lifecycle" as the console overtook both the Wii and the PlayStation to become the fifth best-selling video game console ever.
This story has been updated to reflect David Gibson's clarification.

What joy? I think that nothing will make a gamer happier than a 5000$ Super Mario sprite right?
I mean it is a dream come true!!! Make it happen!
I hope NFTs die a quick and painful death. I absolutely loath the entire idea. Nothing about it works, except for certain people making an idiotic amount of money off of something intangible. I personally like the call them No Fun Tokens.
Oh my sweet video games what are you becoming xxx
starts to laugh
I do hope they don't go that route.
But if they do, it is common knowledge Nintendo does tend to take over the worst parts of bad ideas (if they go the bad idea route to begin with) and use them.
But again let's hope they don't go that route, ever.
(kinda funny that few days ago I had a discussion about this and for some reason I expected Nintendo to do this earlier than Sony, no idea why but I could call it a "based on nothing" feeling of some sort)
The only "Joy" Nintendo should focus on is improving their Joycons
@Pillowpants South Park ripped on it and it still feels understated even if accurate. NFT: never f***ing try.
Please no. Fans and developers do not want this.
……… Should I really be surprised at this point, I mean come on I’m talking about the same company that sold there crappy nso service for a whopping sixty dollars, not to mention basically acting like Mario’s anniversary didn’t happen.
Still I don’t like this at all. ):
Please do not go to NFT bandwagon, Nintendo ! 😨
Seems like a fairly normal thing to say, it would be stupid for a tech company to not keep an eye on stuff like that but it doesn't mean they have an actual interest in it
Money is money in the end of the day, no personal interest in this latest fad myself.
Of course they are interested, scamming people out of money?
What company wouldn't be interested?
Just focus on your games that is the only thing that would bring "joy".
Though I suppose there are people out there who are interested in them, so I don't mind NFT's as long as they don't affect the enjoyment of those who's aren't interested in them.
For example if the next mario kart game has optional NFT's then how does that effect the enjoyment of the actual game for people who aren't interested in them
It's possible to examine a technology objectively and consider the potential, but I feel like Nintendo ultimately wouldn't go anywhere with this, it doesn't feel like a Nintendo move.
I believe historically, Nintendo have only given statements that appease investors because they don't want to embrace such industry trends, but that was under the leadership of Iwata.
They make some questionable decisions at times, but I’m willing to believe that they are better than this…
Microsoft seems to be the only one of the big 3 making the right move on this front by completely avoiding it. Sony has already delved into it with the Spider-Man movie and now Nintendo is interested in it.
I really hope the backlash is so huge that Nintendo backs away from it completely.
NFT
No
Fun
Today
or should it be
Nintendo
Funded
Technology
I hope not.
Don’t do it Nintendo
I wonder how the fanboys will try to justify this
The company that makes Amibo's? Not surprising.
So if they can't find a way through which NFTs can actually improve games, they won't use them. Sounds good, since it's literally impossible to find any joy in NFTs.
I hope they stay away from NFTs just like they stayed away from lootboxes and microtransaction with their console games.
@Krysus There is a massive difference between Amiibos and NFTs. Amiibos you actually own, NFTs are just a receipt that says that you own something that you don't actually own.
@Pillowpants Lol, I named a Troll rogue Pillowpants on the Kargath server back in the day. Love Kevin Smith and Clerks 2! Wish they brought Elias back somehow! Listerfiend...🤣🤣
Let me guess, more Fearmongering from anti-NFT peeps? What a shock , shock i say.
I just want games to be games.
@BTB20 Just wait for the NFT Amibo line. Complete with design and pose website and unique in-game functionality!
@Bunkerneath those that follow business ethics and how Nintendo has a Corporate Social Responsibility department (like many businesses do). Business doesn’t necessarily mean greedy and selfish evil people, dude.
Ooooooof course they do.
Don't freak out. This is Nintendo's standard noncommittal "we are always interested in exploring new whatever" answer that they give whenever people ask them about what they're doing next.
Nintendo tend to be very cautious about jumping on new and recent trends. NFTs will have gone the way of smoking on planes long before they decide to get involved.
If Nintendo go down that path I'm down with them, simple as.
Sounds like they are not interested in NFTs, this is just a PR response for "we're looking into it but not really" so that investors don't think they are entirely ignoring the trend when in fact they are doing nothing with NFTs.
nfts more like nfdeez nuts
clickbait once again
I wonder if Nintendo saw Axie Infinity already. Its like Pokemon / hearthstone/MTG
The answer sounds to me like that:
we want to please our share holders (thats why they said "we are interested") but essentially we cannot see how NFT or Metaverse would make our games better ... So far I wouldn't waste too much thought about Nintendo doing NFTs
They said the same about VR. And yeah..
NFTs are the future, and they can make Nintendo a lot of profit. Would love to see NFTs as part of the MyNintendo Rewards program lol
Seems like they're just keeping an eye on it and putting a placeholder statement instead of actually really thinking about doing anything with it. Hopefully.
this is just humoring investors chasing buzzwords.
NFTs are a scam and a 'metaverse' means absolutely nothing, unless we're talking about Persona 5
Nintendo barely understands the internet as it is. I could only imagine the nonsense Nintendo NFTs would bring about. Just focus on making great games!
Gaming is ruined. I'm losing the passion for it everyday because of this crap. As much as I criticize Nintendo I also admire them so much as a company for many reasons. If they jump on board with this stuff then I'll probably just give up on them too. Like, they'll ignore making a good functioning online service but they're willing to jump into NFTs? Get out of here.
Its almost not even worth sticking around anymore.
Imagine that copy of the old zelda game that sold for a bunch of money in an Earth auction. Now imagine the original coding script for that same old zelda game recoded to play on Mars (where the Earth version can't play on Mars, but the Martian version can also play on Earth) being put up for auction 30 years from now.
Looking forward to buying NFTs of my favourite Amiibo cards. Hope they release some digitial albums for us to put them in and that they don't sell out.
@Qphlat27 your logic is similar to an NES loyalist against the SNES.
Digital amiibo when?
please stop giving this scam money laundering scheme any publicity
@a1904 yeah, this was the best respone the could give
@CactusMan One Blockchain transaction spends as much energy as 1.6 million visa transactions, more than you'll ever do in your entire life.
Nintendo tends to say a lot of stuff during shareholder meetings that doesn't actually stick ("The 3DS and Switch are going to be getting games at the same time!"). This very much feels like noncommittal corporate speak to please the investors.
It's also worth noting that Gibson just corrected himself to say Nintendo was talking more about the Metaverse than NFTs which does fall in line with Nintendo repeatedly stating they were interested in VR (only for us to get Labo): https://twitter.com/gibbogame/status/1489219423487422469
Introducing...Super Mario NFTs for only 40,000 Nintendo Coins (equivalent to $4 million)
@Vegeta937 Yeah, I stuck with this name for a long time. Clerks 2 was kinda magical after waiting all those years for a sequel. I still watch it regularly
This sounds like they're specifically trying to please investors with this statement. I guarantee the only people that matter to these companies that are expressing interest in NFTs are their investors, because Nintendo has never been one to jump on bandwagons, and I don't think they're the type to start with something that the gaming community actively hates.
So when Nintendo says it's interested in new technology people get mad. But when they fall behind on new technology (terrible online multiplayer for example) people also get mad. Can't seem to satisfy these fanboys one way or another.
I have no problems if they only look into it, but if they implement it that's when I stop gaming altogether.
NFTs and amiibos are not even comparable, with amiibos you do get something physical, doesn't depend on a blockchain, there are ways to make amiibo data backups and if the data device/NFT chip dies you can replace it.
I'm sure most people buying amiibos do it to have a nice figure of their favorite characters.
About the metaverse, it might not be "meta", but they already had a "verse" and killed it (Miiverse)
@MrHonest
Did they not see the backlash Ubisoft has and even EA's main man backing off of NFTs?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g also this video should be plugged in to every article about NFTs.
@Korgon
I was thinking the exact same thing. Ninty never gets the interwebz thing right. How the hell are they going to deal with NFTs.
People are missing the comparison between NFT and Amiibo here.
Amiibo was a successful attempt at creating scarcity for what is essentially DLC, by tying that DLC to a physical object.
NFTs are designed to do the same thing - take a digital thing and pretend like it's limited and special.
From that perspective it makes total sense they'd be interested in a scam like NFTs.
Time to start buying used games again...
This is definitely just a generic "We're paying attention and we knew you'd ask about this so we'll say something non-committal to shut up the investors" answer, not any sort of statement they'll be getting into NFTs. I feel like this article headline is really misleading and it's going to lead to a ton of misinformation going around...
Everyone is flipping out and saying "I quit gaming/Nintendo" and this is the most stock non-answer ever.
@HotGoomba NFTs "Killing the Earth" is such a disingenuous statement. I really don't care for them, but people really don't understand how they work and this hyperbole only makes them look even more clueless.
@CactusMan I think there's a difference between the energy consumed by the entire banking system, who is used by the entire planet, and a useless scam used by, in the end, gamblers and speculators
No Fun Times to be had with this announcement.
NFT is like DLC, eventually people will have no choice but to accept it.
Years ago people think DLC is a scam where developers saved some content and sold them later at extra cost. Now it's accepted as a norm. NFT will follow the same path.
Nintendo will use NFT to sell Amiibo as a digital asset, save them lots of money from making physical ones.
While Nintendo makes kids friendly games, they are also very shrewd - in fact Nintendo is like Wario, they are very good at milking money from their fans. There's a reason Mario has been collecting Bitcoins all these decades. This is a very money minded company, they will definitely make good use of NFT for their fans.
@HotGoomba Animal planet incoming.
Removed - inappropriate; user is banned
I don’t expect Nintendo to try NFTs. They are extremely slow to adopt new technology even when people actually want it. With NFTs, not only does nobody want it except for the people financially invested in it, but it serves no function.
@Taya nope, you bet your ass nintendo as soon as they find out that NFTs are just cheaper to make amibos theyll include them in every damn game of theirs.
The Metaverse, huh? Maybe, hopefully, unlikely, this is a secret way to tell us about a Persona 5 port? In a way we'll never see it coming? A man can dream right?
@DiscoDriver44 they dont cave in to online ignorant mobs?
I don't think barely anyone here read the article lol. While I'm just as worried about Nintendo maybe looking at NFT's and trying to get more money out of them, they obviously said in the Twitter post they were mainly talking about the Metaverse. And the Metaverse honestly sounds like something Nintendo could do good, possibly.
Removed - offensive remarks; user is banned
Oh no. Oh no no no no no no. Oh god please no.
@Kazgykes Crypto and NFTs are a market manipulation scam by billionaires. Nobody is buying NFTs, but rich people to sell to rich people. These things have no real benefit to anybody, using ancient inefficient database protocols. They use 100 times the amount of power of a typical VISA transaction, so yes it is destroying the environment needlessly. It is only a tool for making money. If you have the money to trade NFTs go ahead, because that's the only use for it. If I was rich, I'd be doing it, because it works. It is truly the greatest scam of all time.
not surprised Nintendo love to over charge for ports and a garbage online service to squeeze as much money out of us as they possibly can so them going down the NFT route keeps showing how greedy they truly are and how little they care about their audience
Nintendo’s going to be all in on NFTs until they realise they require halfway decent Internet infrastructure to run
Everyone's overreacting. 1. This is no more than a non answer answer 2. NFTs aren't inherently bad, it depends how they are used
Nintendo, please don't. I'm pretty sure fans want games, consoles and DLC, not Non-Fungible Trash.
@lacaras4 Are there any examples to date of good NFTs?
NFTs do not spark joy.
Uh oh... that’s not good! 😰
There will be a lot of nuance in the exact translation but that reads to me as:
"Yes our shareholders want us to look into it so we'll say we are interested, but it's not actually any fun so we're not going to do it unless forced'
Everybody! Read the full Tweet!!! This article is click bait! According to the Tweet, albeit later in the thread, Nintendo's response was mainly towards Metaverse.
@CactusMan Nobody is going to claim the banking industry is flawless and could not make improvements to it's energy consumption, it absolutely could.
But consider this: the global banking industry uses double the energy? As a simple straight up fact that sounds great, except the banking industry supports 70 billion people across the world. Bitcoin is ONE crypto currency out of hundreds that supports a few thousand stock gambling hobbyists.
The comparison is nowhere near a good one. One, limited crypto currency using almost half the amount eh global banking industry uses? That's like saying "my car is eco friendly because it only uses half the amount of petrol every other car combined uses"
[edit] typo, this should obviously say 7 not 70!
Garbage like this is why I’ve given up on big name gaming companies and pretty much only stick to indies now. Between corporate buyouts, ceos jumping on the NFT bandwagon, and constant abuse and overworking behind the scenes, this industry is beyond saving at this point and there’s next to no hope left.
So are you gonna boycott Nintendo now?
@lacaras4 That’s what I tried to say a few weeks ago… it didn’t end well for me 😂
Can we just talk about how horrendously clickbaity the headline is here
@SuperZeldaFun The Earth is just an oversized Torterra
@MrHonest I'd see that working better on the History Channel at 3am.
It seems they throw in both metaverse and NFT in the same question, Nintendo is only interest in the metaverse part, not the NFT part though I think Nintendo is lying here and just want to answer quickly so to not had to deal with that anymore. It's like a kid asking their parent, are you planning to get me a new car soon and they said yeah yeah I'll think about it.
@CactusMan typo (meant to say 7), but the point still stands, billions for one, thousands for the other
People need to realize that Nintendo can do this right. Not the NFT stuff, but the metaverse.
Imagine Japan's Nintendo World, but as a 3D virtual world where you can hang out with friends. There. I just sold a lot of people.
Oof... When they tweet says it's mostly geared towards the metaverse (VR) but the click bait article says it's for NFTs.... Bad bad 😒
nonononononoNONONONONONONO
Nintendo's not doing this stuff right now, and they have the right attitude towards it
I'll not support this sh*t. Then again, I'm old, this is for the "new crowd". Everyone born in the 80's is "on the way out" anyways (at least pop culture wise). Everyone who is now 10 years old will grow up to love this cr*p. If Nintendo goes this route, it's the final console I'll leave behind for good.
@Scollurio No, this isn't the future of gaming, it's a potential dystopian future of monetising everything and anything even the non-tangible by creating artificial scarcity and decentralising systems that are often deliberately not decentralised already because that's a terribly bad thing for them, but allows for a lack of accountability because "blockchain says". It sells itself as fixing problems caused by the banks and finance industry whilst being spearheaded by the exact same people that caused all the issues in those industries and simultaneously not fixing any of the issues but actually introducing many of it's own. It's an inherently zero sum system designed to greatly benefit those who already have the funds and power. It's a 'bigger fool' scheme.
It's stocks. It's the 2008 market crash with confusing digital non-assets.
I forgot to post this in my first comment so here is the video again for people who want to know all about NFTS, crypto and blockchain (it's 2 hours but the first 15 mins give enough info to know exactly who this is all really for)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g
@dBackLash are you trying to argue bandwagoning is any better than being too slow to catch an already established wagon-train of many years?
Still don't understand NFT's tbh
And now suddenly they'll have the Nintendo fanboys in their corner just like that. If Nintendo approves it, it will easily become accepted.
@somebread Imo it's good for Nintendo to explore new technologies, whether they end up using them or not should be up to them.
The only bandwagoning I see are the people that mindlesly talk sh*t about NFTs because they think it makes them cool or something.
@dBackLash Not because they've done the research, learnt what they are, how they 'work', why the things they claim to do and fix are already possible but not done, who is actually spearheading them, the psychology and manipulation of the communities they tout and the impact they are actually going to have?
No...you're right. They must just be trying to be cool.
that disapointing Nintendo, don't follow this scam.
@Giancarlothomaz they are just saying something to please investors, they’re not actually going to do anything.
Notice that they have interest in "Metaverse", Not NFT. The article's author should clarify this to avoid misunderstanding.
Not sure how customers get any joy out of NFTs, at least not right now. Nintendo is smart to avoid this hornet's nest.
Unfortunately blockchain gaming will probably take over.
@Ogbert Nah most people on this site don't bother to properly research what NFTs are.
@AstraeaV Not really, I mean, if I made a game myself as a single developer, or with a small team, would I bother integrating NFTs? Of course not, that's a massive task, only reserved for the upper echelon of greedy corporations, or NFT enthusiast startups. As long as you are not on life support with FIFA and Call of Duty, you will be fine.
@dBackLash There is a big difference between falling behind on something that should be a standard (i.e. decent online multiplayer) and looking into a technology that is proven to be both a scam and environmentally damaging.
@CactusMan you mean that a single cryptocurrency uses almost half the energy of THE ENTIRE GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM. There is absolutely no question here, cryptocurrency and NFTs are a pointless source of emissions. People are literally reactivating gas-fired power plants and leeching off national power grids just to mine crypto.
I think I'll just quit buying big games if Nintendo starts selling NFTs. My backlog is long enough to last a lifetime anyway and thankfully a lot of indies will continue to make fun, bs free games.
No joy, just a con.
Nintendo knows compulsive fanboys will buy them (NFT)....
They know their audience pretty well.
Nintendo, in fact, is in rare company, along with the likes of Disney, to be sitting on top of a wealth of IP to leverage with NFT's.
Amiibo's already serve as a physical example of the concept:
a collectible item that potentially can be utilized across a myriad of Nintendo software. Purchase a Zelda NFT and utilize it in the next Xenoblade game, or drop it into your Animal Crossing island.
Ironically, NFT's bring with it all the classic problems of backwards compatibility. For how long will this older item be supported in future products?
Ultimately I think Nintendo will stick with physical merchandise like Amiibo before they switch to digital commodities altogether.
Answer; no joy.
@NotGeno thank goodness.
@pharahmain It's not a proven scam and only a certain procent of NFTs are damaging the environment.
No surprise there 🙃
With a bit of irony: Nintendo, you just need to release a new Super Mario Bros in which every coin collected in game is an NFT, then let us spend those coins to have discount on merchandising and games in the eShop! At that point, everyone would love NFTs
Seriously, NFT is just technology, it's not good or bad, it only depends on what is used for.
So many people jumped the gun on this dialogue exchange when it was intended to be interpreted as the usual vague noncommittal PR response. Nintendo hasn’t said Jack in regards to supporting NFTs
@Mando44646 Haha.
No. Please just no.
Yeah their probably go for it in some form, Hell how many of us Bought Amiibo's to unlock content in games, They watched what the likes of Skylanders, and the others where doing and thought where have some of that NFC stuff.
Now their watch what the likes of Konami, Ubisoft and if Sega go ahead and if there remotly succesfull for them Nintendo will hop on the Wagon with some of the wall version of the NFT..
New Nintendo want our money and Nintendo fans wont be able to resist it, especially the hard core ones. Its all very disturbing that people will pay huge money for digital artwork and think of it as a work of art, at least amiibo was a physical item which was great for display as well as unlocking the content.
@ArcticEcho Any examples of bad? The fact is NFTs haven't been used in video games in any major way yet.
@KITG_GROUP Uh, the main criticism for NFTs is that they are 100% digital assets, so if anything, Amiibos success is an argument against NFTs. People love owning something physical and find spending lots of money on digital goods dumb. And can you blame them?
I'm just here to see who only read the clickbait title of the article and not the actual article.
@Effortless-gamer
90% of people here. I do it all the time.
@Medic_Alert interesting take
I kind of want them to hire Marie Kondo now, just so she can say “NFTs do not spark joy”.
NFTs run on the same voodoo that gave me a D in economics.
Nintendo could bring back Miiverse and probably tie it into NFTs in some useful way. The funny part is Nintendo has more worthwhile NFT-able assets than any other videogame company.
User banned? The heck happened lol.
@Snatcher they made the same completely off the cuff unrelated screed on 2 articles, blaming "Rainbow Queer Totems" and other things for people not liking NFTs
@somebread Thank god there gone, we don't need that.
lol, fully expected it.
@SonOfVon As a long life Nintendo fan I say, NO!
Oh god no. As if them taking down boatloads of music uploads recently wasn't enough...
So its metaverse not NFTs. There you go people. Don't get too worked up about it
They could just create a metaverse version of Super Nintendo World and create hella park expansions based on Zelda,DKC,StarFox,Pokemon,Metroid,Kirby,ETC 🤷♂️
@Qphlat27 gaming was ruined when developers stopped making games focused mainly on single player nowadays games only focus on online modes
The metaverse is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be...unnatural.
What fun? None!
@Ogbert I fully agree mate.
Considering purchases on the eShop are still tied to your system and not an account tells me that Nintendo wouldn't do NFTs because they're afraid of letting people own their digital purchases for longer than a console's lifespan.
