The news around this game just gets better. I get the feeling Nintendo have been cooking up something very special over the last 10 years since MK8. I can't wait to find out more in the Direct next week.
I think the 120Hz screen isn't being highlighted enough. Its going to encourage developers to offer 40Hz modes as standard, so we can get smoother gameplay at decent resolutions, as CD Project Red are showing.
I think this was pretty obvious from the start, even when Nintendo Life ran the story saying Nintendo had found a way to make something worse than codes in a box. It would obviously be better if the game was on the cart (but with day one patches, that hasn't existed for a while), but at least you can resell these no problem.
I think Nintendo prefer to let developers implement their own spin on achievements that fits the game. I'm okay with that but can see why some are disappointed. eShop music is a non-issue, I think people just mention it for a joke, right? I've been encouraged by what they've been saying about improving the speed of the eShop. That is much-needed so I hope they succeed.
Super excited to see what they reveal in the upcoming Direct. If you have any interest in Mario Kart at all it makes picking up the bundle a no-brainer as it's a great saving.
Now we know the price, why don't we wait a couple of months for a few reviews before rushing to judgement? The recent interview of this site suggests it is quite a "robust" experience and it looks fun so I might pick this up. I'm fairly sure it'll last me a few hours and to me that will be worth it. Astro's Playroom was exceptional and a great move by Sony to pack it in - it lead to Astro Bot being a relative hit and critical darling. But I don't think we should expect pack-ins of that quality for every console launch going forward.
I didn't spot this at the time but heard about it afterwards, a nice Easter egg for sure. I was also happy to see Nintendo to put some fresh faces in the spotlight to mark the start of the switch 2 era
The fact they are putting the whole game on a 64GB cart is great. Also, there shouldn't be too many updates required as it's a pretty old game at this point. Very keen to preorder this when it becomes available as playing it handheld would be very nice.
@Luffymcduck I don't mind criticism either but it all just seems "overly" negative to me since the Switch 2 Direct, like over 50% of articles, whether news items or opinion pieces.
Switch 2 looks amazing and I will be getting one. The console price (at least in the UK) is good, especially if you get the MK World bundle. But the game prices are higher than I hoped. MK World at £75 would have been £60 on the switch, so that's a 25% increase. With the way it works in the UK, you'll probably be able to get it for £66ish at launch, whereas that would have been £48 on Switch. So not great at all. The fact digital games are a bit cheaper does make me consider going all digital this gen. But on the whole, I'll probably be a lot more selective with my purchases and resell to fund the next game if I do go physical.
@Vegeta937 I know I'm probably being way too lenient on them but I watched that Direct and was just blown away for 60 minutes. It was everything I wanted and more. Then I come to the Internet and see so much negativity. But everyone is entitled to voice their opinion so I'm not complaining.
@anubisvel Nice response, I can totally understand your point of view. The price has now been released:
The official Japanese website for Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour lists the game at a price of ¥990 yen, which at the time of writing converts to around $6.12 / £4.65.
@anubisvel I disagree. It cost money to develop it. Some people will find value in it and buy it, other will not. Sure, I'd love it to be free, but I don't expect it.
@beltmenot But it still took development time, right? Why not wait until you know the price and read a few reviews before deciding if it's bad. And hey, on the bright side, guess what, Nintendo are "giving away" BOTW and TOTK upgrade packs to Switch Online subscribers.
This article misses the key point that you'll be able to resell these, making them significantly better than codes in a box but admittedly worse than physical. Some wild takes today.
The article needs to be corrected as the year on year decrease is 10% not 31%. Solid numbers overall.
Update: My bad, the drop for the year so far is in fact 31%. I was just looking at the quarter. It does look like the switch sales for this quarter are fairly normal (slightly lower) and the big difference was Q1 which was massively down on the previous year due to TOTK/Mario Movie
Always surprised when you promote this kind of stuff. If it was legal why not just post the link as well? Don't be upset when Nintendo stop sending you codes for review. Happy to be educated and told why Nintendo will have no issue with this ROM hack.
All six games nominated are great. Well done for Nintendo for having two nominations again. It honestly won't make a huge difference to them whether they win or lose but I'm sure they appreciate the recognition. Personally, ToTK is the best game I've played this year but I won't mind too much if it loses out. Alan Wake 2 is a technical masterpiece even if the gameplay isn't really up my street. I reckon it's between those two - BG3 may get knocked down due to its slightly buggy Act 3.
@shgamer This is pretty standard for big games, most people will buy it on or near to release. The thing is, it will continue to sell 1 million per quarter or thereabouts for the rest of the switch's life, so it will probably end up on around 25 million. BOTW benefitted from an extra 6 years.
@KryptoniteKrunch I agree the numbers for MK8 are incredible. If you include the 8 million sold on Wii U, it will be close to 70 million next quarter, nearly double the next best selling entry on the Wii. TOTK will likely never catch BOTW as the latter benefitted from being an evergreen title for an extra 6 years. Still very impressive numbers. @mariomaster96 I too hope Wonder supercedes U Deluxe at some point. Looks like it'll have the momentum to do it sooner rather than later.
@OldGamer999 I get what you're saying about the Nintendo quality that other games seem to lack. I often struggle to put it into words. A lot of people say it's the polish and I agree. But the thing that stands out to be is the way the characters move. Something about the mechanics and animations they program in games like TOTK, oddysey, Splatoon or even Pikmin, it's so fluid and fun to just run around. What makes me really excited about NL's preview of this game is that they highlight how fun it is to control mario and friends and the new animations all look superb. Shaping up to be the best 2D Mario game ever?
Was so hyped for this game before it came out (helped by the release being delayed in Europe). It definitely delivered as the game is really fun with a nice variety of modes and tracks.
If you are not happy, just don't buy it. I certainly won't be. I may pick up on PS5 when they eventually go on sale. Plenty of amazing Switch ports out there so it makes it easy to avoid the bad ones.
Amazing to be improving year on year at the beginning of 7th year on sale, TOTK playing a big part.
Conservative estimates for rest of fiscal year: Q2 - 4 million, Q3 (holiday) - 7 million, Q4 - 3 million. That would leave Switch on around 144 million sold by end of fiscal year 2023-24. That would leave it 10 million short of DS numbers.
I think they announce Switch 2 in June 2024 and release it in October same year. My guess is the Switch dethrones the DS some time in 2025 as long as Nintendo keeps selling it as a budget console.
@NinjaSyao I'm about 75 hours in and haven't felt the grind at all yet and picking up new items at a steady cadence. Maybe I'll feel it if I ever try to 100% it but for now I'd prefer to take the updates and have the most stable experience.
As others have said, in the UK, BOTW was already £10 extra. But I've already pre ordered TOTK for £45, which is good value for what is likely 100 hour game. Prices will inevitably rise though and this isn't great. Personally, I'll just keep looking out for when games are on offer, and be a bit more picky with what I buy. TOTK will 100% be worth it though.
Really happy to see its done so well. Great game. I played online almost exclusively when it came out, then dropped off for a bit. I'm now playing through the single player and can't believe how good it is. I really love how it is chock full of miniature levels that only take a few minutes to complete but they are all really fun. Makes it really easy to drop in and out for a short play sessions. I'm also really enjoying exploring the over world a lot more than previous campaigns. I really don't think the single player gets enough credit, its excellent.
As a massive Splatoon fan I have to say I was disappointed with the Splatfest. Too many disconnects and I didn't get to play one Tri-color Battle despite playing for hours yesterday.

@axelhander He actually said in this interview that they are not Hall effect but have been rebuilt from the ground up

I think Nate's suggestion of remapping the stick clicks to the back buttons is the best use case, at least for me.
