Re: Metal Gear Solid Parody Never Stop Sneakin' Is, Erm, Sneakin' To Switch Soon

happylittlepigs

@Nincompoop Wii U better than PS3? and switch 3x better than wii U?

zelda BOTW ran exactly the same on switch and wii u. I'm not saying the switch isn't better, but it certainly isn't better by a factor of 3. and I'm just gonna have to call BS on wii u being more powerful than the last gen home consoles. it may have been equally powerful as far as resolution capabilities, but considering what's under the hood, it is my knowledge that the wii u was even at best. MGSV realistically shouldn't have even been on PS3/360 in the first place because of how choppy and unclean it was. being on the switch wouldn't be a ton better.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Parody Never Stop Sneakin' Is, Erm, Sneakin' To Switch Soon

happylittlepigs

@Nincompoop doubt it can run on the switch. I played the xbox 360 edition quite extensively and it's graphics are shi- (whoops forgot this is nintendo life) even on the 360- low resolution, very pixely, textures are garbage, and it only runs 30fps. on the switch it would just be a mess.

plus you really don't want mgsv on the switch anyways. that game was a stain upon the great metal gear franchise.

Re: Smash Melee Champ Resigns from All-Male Rules Committee To Encourage Broader Representation

happylittlepigs

Getting back to the core issue here, I'm not sure all you people arguing even know the extent of women in the melee community at all. Basically, there are none. You look at the top 50, top 100 players of melee and are there ANY women? At all? When Nintendo held that invitational and invited almost half women and half men, that was hugely disproportionate. The smash wiki has 37 pages for female smashers, total. Keep in mind that's across all games. I checked out every single one of their pages, and of them only Milktea stood out. She once ranked 4th on the connecticut pr, no longer plays melee. Their best possible choice for a female smasher to be on the committee is an inactive player who, at her peak, did well at a small regional scene.

It's unfortunate that more women don't want to engage themselves with the fighting game community, but that's just how it is. It's unnecessary to force more women into being in a position that they frankly aren't qualified for.

Not saying women can't be good at smash, or that they don't exist in the community at all (saw a lot of girls at evo both years), it's just that there aren't any community-relevant girls in melee.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Breaks Down Splatoon 2's Tech Improvements Over Its Predecessor

happylittlepigs

@Bengals76 I get where you're coming from but you're asking for a lot from a tablet running modern console games on a TV. In several years, of course a $200 tablet will be able to solidly run 1080p 60FPS for every game, but right now they couldn't get that without rising the price or encountering technical difficulties like overheating and battery life. Hell, if you play zelda in TV mode for a while and then switch to handheld, the thing is already pretty toasty, bump up the graphics of zelda and you'd be able to "switch" to an improptu cooking pan.

Re: Feature: Is Tokyo's Arcade Scene Really Dying?

happylittlepigs

Man, I wish the states had those kinds of arcades still. I remember going to an arcade back when I lived in California that was HUGE and filled with only Japanese machines. My current self would be absolutely enthralled, but at the time I was maybe 6 or 7 and I was just complaining that "everything's in Japanese!!"

As it turns out, if it's all in Japanese, it's where you want to be. All we have now are Dave and Busters which, I kid you not, did not have a Pac-Man or Galaga machine, except at the very front which only took quarters for charity, but you don't bring quarters with you when you're going to an all-digital arcade, now do you? The place where I go to for local smash tournaments does have a small arcade and a TON of rhythm games though, so that's cool. The only problem is that I live so far away, whenever I go I only play smash to get practice in :/

Re: Pokémon Company Press Site Lists Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon For Switch As Well As 3DS

happylittlepigs

Let me provide my logic for why this will be announced for switch at E3:

Sun and Moon is less than a year old. The difference in time between the U.S. release dates of Pokemon games:

Ruby/Sapphire- March of '03
Emerald- May of '05
2 years, 2 months

Diamond/Pearl- April of '07
Platinum- March of '09
almost 2 years

Black/White- March of '11
B/W2- October of '12
year and a half

Sun/Moon- November '16
Ultra Sun/Moon- November '17?
only a year

This just doesn't seem like something they would do only for the 3DS. Nintendo doesn't have any real E3 showstoppers this year like last year with BotW, so they need to beef up their presentation as much as possible. I expect an Ultra Sun/Moon announcement for the switch.

Alternatively, it's much more than that. Notice how the time between Black and White and Black and White 2 was the shortest of the series before Ultra Sun and Moon? That short gap was probably because it was a side project while the main team developed an engine for the 3DS, which was a year and a half old when BW2 came out. Exactly a year after Black and White 2? X and Y for the 3DS. I even remember exactly when I learned of the trailer for X and Y. My friend told me about it and I genuinely thought it was just another pokemon rainbow at first because of how soon BW2 had released. My guess is that this is to keep their wallets lined while they create an engine for the next generation of Pokemon on the next generation of handheld.

Re: Poll: Nintendo is Keen on 'Social Competitive Gaming' on Switch - Are You Game?

happylittlepigs

@shaneoh Actually, there is a game people play for fun (on streams and such) called an "Iron Man" that is similar to a triathlon. Basically, each player uses a squad of characters- sometimes their choice, sometimes the whole roster in order, sometimes random, to play their opponent who does the same thing in a very long series of matches. They're fun to watch, definitely, but there isn't a single pro smasher or even competitive smasher such as myself that would support iron mans being standard for tournaments. You, as a casual, might think that would be fun, but the competitive side wants to leave nothing up to a mere roll of the dice. Stages are picked deliberately to prevent the opponent from gaining a slight advantage, and characters are counterpicked against other characters. This is where you get the ability to use multiple characters to come in. Aside from arguably Bayonetta, every character has at least one losing matchup in the game. This means that a player often has to pick up a secondary main to cover their bad matchups. Out of all the top 10 smash 4 players, only one of them never uses a secondary character.

The other thing to consider is that you're trying to solve a "problem" that isn't even really a problem. Nobody is complaining about people only using a single character. Bayonetta, who is often accepted as the best character, isn't even all that common and has yet to win a major tournament. Smash 4 isn't like Brawl where a single character absolutely dominates the meta game. By taking away the power of choice from people who play Bayonetta for easy wins, you also take away the power of choice from people like Serynder and Master Puffy, who voluntarily and happily solo-main Jigglypuff. When you take choice away from everyone who mains Mario because he is easy to play and really good, you also take away the power of choice from people like 2ManyCooks, who chooses to main the much worse Dr. Mario instead.

As a competitive smasher, I can say for certain that making all matches random selection would decimate the competitive scene within a month at the latest. All character pride would be gone, all character tech would be gone, all semblance of reason in the competitive scene would be gone. Pro smash would turn into pro mario party.

Re: Poll: Nintendo is Keen on 'Social Competitive Gaming' on Switch - Are You Game?

happylittlepigs

@shaneoh Well if it ejected down it wouldn't be the dumbest thing ever

If you're going with the sports analogy, then forcing everyone to switch characters all the time is like forcing a defensive lineman to play wide receiver. Even though the defensive lineman may be the best, most talented defensive lineman in the history of the sport, he doesn't hold a candle to an average high school wide receiver. This is because his skill set is not specialized to play wide receiver.

Random characters or items would be a fun side event at a large tournament, in the same way it would be funny to see a 350-pound defensive lineman running downfield to catch balls. The mark of a good player isn't being able to use every character well, it's knowing your one or two characters so well that you push the meta game with them. When people are randomly forced to switch, then the meta can't develop beyond fundamentals. Instead of football being a sport where a specialized offensive squad goes up against a specialized defensive squad, it would just be a bunch of wholly average people, because nobody can play every position well. If you're big and strong, then you'd make a great offensive or defensive lineman, but you cannot be fast at the same time. If you can be agile and run the ball well, then you probably aren't big enough to stop a 300 pound guy in his tracks.

You think this style of smash would promote "true skill", when it would really just promote average players who know only the basics of every character. Why learn advanced tech for any character when you only have a statistical 1/58 chance of getting them in any given game? Smash isn't like mario kart, where all the characters and karts are fundamentally the same, and it's dumb to treat it like it is.

Re: Poll: Nintendo is Keen on 'Social Competitive Gaming' on Switch - Are You Game?

happylittlepigs

@shaneoh If players had to learn every single character, that would be the dumbest thing ever. A lot of low tiers like Pac-Man, Wii Fit Trainer, and Zelda are crazy technical and difficult, and provide no benefit unlike top tiers such as Sheik and Ryu that are equally technical. How awful would it be as well if you randomly were given Jigglypuff and your opponent was randomly given Cloud, or Marth? Even if you know how to use Puff well and the opponent only knows a little bit about Cloud or Marth, you're still at a massive disadvantage because of how bad those matchups are for puff. Plus, a lot of the fun of smash is picking your main character and the secondaries that work well to compliment your main. This idea of yours sounds neat up front, but it would be detrimental to the community as a whole.

Re: E3 is Coming, Which Means Anonymous Super Smash Bros. Switch 'Screenshots'

happylittlepigs

@DarthNocturnal

Smash attacks can be charged by holding A and the direction you want them to go at the same time. So up+A would be an up smash. Tilts are activated by first pressing the direction and then the attack button. Regardless, he was talking about how the LEFT stick should be d-pad friendly, not the right stick which is commonly used for smash attacks. Most pro smash players turn smash stick off anyways in favor of tilt stick, which generally allows for more tech opportunities.

This is definitely fake, by the way. Not even realistic at all. I'd like smash 4 on the switch, but only if the competitive aspect of the game remained unchanged. Same characters, same legal stages, same game balance.

Unless they finally buff puff.

Re: Poll: Who Would You Like To See In Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo Switch?

happylittlepigs

Unpopular opinion: they shouldn't add any new characters for smash switch. This is my selfish competitive smash logic: if they add new characters, then the community will be split between people who have the switch version and people who, at this point, physically cannot obtain a switch. How awful would this be for the community? I, being a switch owner, move to the Switch version, but most of my friends are still stuck on wii u until they too can make the "switch". It would be great if we got the new characters added as DLC to the Wii U version, but Nintendo would be stupid to do that because of how many wii u owners would buy a switch just for smash. I just see new characters as being a rift in the Smash 4 community that we really don't need right now that the scene is developing so much.

that being said, I would lose my mind if shovel knight were added into smash

Re: Poll: Nintendo is Keen on 'Social Competitive Gaming' on Switch - Are You Game?

happylittlepigs

@shaneoh Character selection is a big part of any game, but it certainly isn't the most important attribute, especially in Smash 4. Previous games had one universally best character, and Brawl Meta Knight was so broken he was actually banned in some scenes. Smash 4's best character is arguably Bayonetta, yet a Bayo player has yet to win any major. At Civil War, we saw top 8 include mid tier Donkey Kong, as well as low tier Link taking 3rd and Falcon (barely top 20) take 2nd. In Smash 4, character isn't really vital, and to say that someone who plays a top tier isn't skilled is simply untrue. It is because they are skilled that they use a top tier character to make use of their skills.

Nintendo hasn't been supporting the competitive smash scene much at all. They had that Smash Bros Invitational "tournament", but matches were played on illegal stages with items and the crowd had a say in who won. That's not a tournament, that's a PR event. It was fun to watch, but that doesn't mean they're supporting the scene. Capcom puts lots of money and effort into running the Capcom Pro Tour, ensuring that Street Fighter V has an organized league, plenty of sponsors, and lots of publicity. What has Nintendo done? They've sponsored a few big smash tournaments. Nintendo's problem is that they don't want to alienate their casual fans by promoting smash as the competitive fighter it is. As a result, the scene suffers. We're forced to get our own sponsors, run our own tournaments, get money for prizes, and 2GG is trying to make a legit "circuit". If Nintendo promoted Smash like Capcom promoted Street Fighter, Smash would be on ESPN2. Instead we're relegated to Twitch. Nintendo does know about pro smash, and they do follow the scene. Aside from a few asinine decisions (namely Jigglypuff not being buffed and King Dedede being nerfed), they seem to buff and nerf characters according to how well they do in competitive play. Community wants a buff for their low tier? They get a buff. Spanish community bans Bayonetta for being cancerous? Bayo gets nerfed. However, they're moreso just playing referee when they should be playing team manager, and it reflects in the size and scope of smash events compared to the Capcom Pro Tour. Nintendo has a potential gold mine of competitive smash, and they're just leaving it be. Such a shame.

Re: The Maps Offered In Splatoon 2 Will Rotate More Frequently

happylittlepigs

I don't care as much about stage rotations as much as I do GAME MODE rotations. At any given point, I should be able to pick up Splatoon and play the game mode I want. The old game only offered unranked turf war and one of the other 3 ranked modes at a time. I want unranked versions of all the 4 game modes as well as ranked versions of all 4 game modes playable at any given time. That, to me, just seems basic for a shooter. And I don't even play any shooters!

Re: SwitchCharge Is A Case Which Gives Your Nintendo Switch 12 Hours Of Stamina

happylittlepigs

@JudgeMethos I'm not claiming to be insulted for other people, and I'm not offended myself, I'm saying that you are making a broad generalization about the people who would be buying this product, an attitude I wouldn't expect to see on a website for games enthusiasts. Saying that anyone who wants this product must not be contributing to society is like saying anyone who buys a gun must be planning to commit a murder. You're taking the worst examples of the consumers of the product, and applying that standard to all consumers of the product. I'm not offended by what you said, but I can acknowledge that what you said is an insult to the gaming community as a whole. You're saying that anyone who wants this product isn't a contributing member of society, and I think that's quite a strong generalization for something as simple as wanting more battery life and a better kickstand.

Re: SwitchCharge Is A Case Which Gives Your Nintendo Switch 12 Hours Of Stamina

happylittlepigs

@JudgeMethos Really? "If you play video games for 6 hours a day, you must not be contributing to society!" First of all. not everyone who has a Switch has a job, and a career, and a family. A lot of us are students with a lot of free time. Or people with jobs and free time. Or people with families whose families play the switch until it loses battery. To say that someone mustn't be contributing to society and "making everyone else's lives better" to want extra battery for their console is insulting.

Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks Pack-In Title Because It's $299, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

happylittlepigs

First of all, everyone STOP BLAMING REGGIE! You ever heard the phrase, "Don't shoot the messenger!"? Reggie had likely no role in this decision. This came from Nintendo Headquarters in Japan. Reggie is in Washington. That being said...

Oh lord. I really hope this ends up being like the 3DS and making a big comeback, because they threw out any chance of it being the instant success of the Wii with that price point and lack of bundled games. Where do I even begin with the mistakes??

1. Weak launch lineup, biggest title is coming out on Wii U as well. Next game we get is 2 months later, and is an expansion pack for the game we all have.
2. $300 is fine, but without a game you're effectively making it a $350 console anyways.
3. 1, 2, Switch! could have been the Wii Sports of the Switch- a title that's easy to get into, you can play it out of the box, it's great with friends, and it shows off the capabilities of the console. Hardcore gamers would enjoy it for a little bit at least, and it's good for the casual audience. By making it separate, fewer people buy the game, fewer people play it, fewer people tell their friends how fun it is, and the magic success of the Wii is gone. There is a sweetspot with this stuff, and they hit it with the Wii. They missed a potential gold mine.
4. Too much damn tech. The Joy Cons could have been like a wiimote- simple and cheap. Instead they made it a veritable "Switch" Army Knife of controllers. IR sensor is pointless, HD rumble is a nice feature, but unnecessary. The reason the pro controller is so expensive is because it includes HD rumble, motion control, and probably even another NFC reader/writer. I know why they're expensive, but it's because they overstuff the things.
5. Lack of details about paid online
Perception is reality, and our perception of their online is that it will be $60 a year with poopy benefits. Seems like a ripoff. Nintendo should have clarified the price of the service at the thing to ease concerns. Maybe it will be a reasonable $10 or $20. But if we don't know, all we can do is assume the worst.

I really, REALLY, want this system to succeed. I really, REALLY wanted the Wii U to be an example of how not to listen to your fans, overstuff a console with unnecessary tech, and overall do a bad job at marketing. Instead they're repeating themselves with the Switch and it isn't looking pretty. When will Nintendo learn... that their actions... HAVE CONSEQUENCES!!!?!??!?!

Re: Breaking Down the Nintendo Switch Online Service Details

happylittlepigs

Considering we don't know:
-the price of the service
-the connectivity between Switch and app

I think it's stupid to be saying, "OH WOW NINTENDO WAY TO SCAM US!" Maybe the service will be dirt cheap. Sony and Microsoft cater to adults and teenagers- people with money. Nintendo caters more to kids and families- people without money. So it would make sense that Xbox Live Gold and PS+ cost more- they are a premium service for people who probably have a steady stream of income. I'm expecting this to be a dirt cheap service, maybe $10-$20 bucks a year. Nintendo would be shooting themselves in the foot by cutting off children, their primary audience, from playing their games via a paywall. This would also make sense why they make the pathetic offering of 1 rented (S)NES game per month- it's not meant to be the reason you buy it, it's meant to be a perk. Nintendo also cannot offer free full games every month like Xbox and Playstation can because the switch library just isn't that big. When Microsoft and Sony started the free games deal, they had already built up a giant catalog of games. All they had to do was find a good game that wasn't selling anymore because most people already had it and give it up for free. Nintendo doesn't have that luxury because the Switch is just starting out. I'm expecting the service to be very cheap for the first 1-2 years, then Nintendo offers up a secondary alternative to the cheaper service- one which offers the free to keep monthly games.

Re: Shovel Knight Is Coming To Nintendo Switch With Gender Swapping And Co-Op Modes

happylittlepigs

@Spoony_Tech Keep in mind that they're a small indie developer, making three completely new campaigns with different stories, altered level design, different music, and new mechanics. They're doing this on a total of 7 different platforms (3DS, Wii U, Steam, Xbox One, PS4, PSVita, and the Amazon TV thing) in 3 regions and in 5 or 6 different languages. For a big dev firm, that's a good amount of work. For a small indie developer, it's a metric ton. They're doing all this COMPLETELY free, because that was the promise they made in their kickstarter. They could be charging for these updates, as they are well worth the money, but they are sticking to their guns and not charging for them. Yacht Club is taking a while to make this stuff, partially because they are a small firm, but you have to ask yourself- is it even a bad thing that they're spacing it out? Nearly 3 years after Shovel Knight's release, and we're STILL talking about it, and we're STILL hyped for it. That greatly extends the shelf life of a game, in an age where most AAA multiplat games die out in less than a year. Hell, Call of Duty is so bad at staying relevant, they make a new one every year just to keep people vaguely interested. Yacht Club does the same thing, except the content is a hell of a lot better and a hell of a lot more free.

Re: Feature: A Year in Development - Yacht Club Games on Digging In With Shovel Knight

happylittlepigs

@rdrunner1178 They actually have a donation button on their website for all the folks that feel guilty about the massive amount of free content they're getting. I've already bought the 3DS and Wii U versions as well as the amiibo, and may even get the PS4 version as well. SUCH A GREAT GAME!

Even though all the content is coming out slow, it's actually good for Shovel Knight to stay relevant, even 3 whole years after its initial release. Yacht Club is easily my favorite gave dev right now just because of their fan service, customer support, and dedication to making quality content above all else. Honestly, I wouldn't be upset if they charged us for the DLC, but the fact that it is completely free makes them simply unrivaled as far as fan treatment goes. In the age of companies sucking the lives out of their fans with on-disc DLC, day one DLC, and microstransactions in full-length games, it's refreshing to see this developer opting for customer satisfaction over money leeching. I'm really looking forward to Specter of Torment, after Plague of Shadows was such an awesome expansion.
