Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a classic double-dip, offering the same core game we played on the Wii U a few years back but with a few welcome embellishments.
If you've been under a rock for the past few months and don't know exactly what's new in this particular re-release, then allow Nintendo to educate you. This handy video highlights all of the new additions - such as a revamped battle mode, classic items and new characters - and should help make that purchasing decision a little more straightforward.
Are you looking forward to getting your grubby hands on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe later this month? Speed to the comments section to tell us.

I think I'm good with the Wii U version for now.
Is Smart Steering = Auto Grip ?
Day one buy.don't know why everyone gets upset and cries there aren't new courses.lol hello not a new Mario kart.that being said, the switch will have 2 mk games. Mk8 and the new one in about 2 years.
"Anytime, anywhere, with anyone"
Should have been the slogan from day one of the Switch reveal but I'm glad Nintendo is getting consistent. With one player games it can just be "anytime, anywhere."
I'm going to buy this. I'm going to buy this for someone's birthday too even if they only half want it because then we get to play together. Pre order at Amazon with Prime though helps with cost for this owner of the Wii U version and it's dlc.
And yet they failed to mention that you can now swap character and karts in the Online Lobby. You know, a feature that is very useful
@Anti-Matter : I think it's more for younger and/or novice players who may struggle with the game. At least I hope so as I would like young children and my sister (who is disabled) to be able to play the game more comfortably and with confidence, even against more seasoned players.
I've spent so many hours playing the Wii U version, and I intend to do the same with the Deluxe version! I can't wait for this game, day one buy for me! The battle mode looks great, and I'm glad that double items boxes are back! Looking forward to April 28th!
Over priced DLC pack in my opinion.
@sillygostly
Hm... interesting.
I will try the hardest track first once I got the game.
Rainbow Road (Space Station) on 200 cc with Smart Steering.
@Slim1999 that's great. I'll wait for the new one in 2 years.
As someone with no interest in Battle Mode, I'll stick with Wii U. And I still have Double Dash for dual weapons!
"Anytime, anywhere, with anyone!"
Remember protection, kids.
I want this, but not for $60 after owning the Wii U version digitally with all the DLC and amiibo costumes unlocked. I triple starred everything aside from 200cc and I dont know if I can put myself through that again. Just give Wii U owners a 3rd DLC pack. Sheesh.
I'm more.curious about the lack of talk about their online system. Including that awful sounding app
@Slim1999 Exactly. All the YouTube videos can't accurately show the upgrade from 720p to 1080p. But then again not everyone is a big fan of the series or can afford it shortly after buying a Switch. Still for me the game looks incredible and I can't wait to get my hands on it release day. Plus the fact that like you said we will be getting another Mario Kart after this for Switch will be great.
I don't know...
Didn't MK8 on Wiiu have some sort of promotion where if you bought the game digital you got a free game? I feel like that's why i don't have a physical copy of this. Too bad they're not doing a similar promotion for Switch. Guess they wouldn't want to give away free copies of BotW....
@RedMageLanakyn It was for both the physical and digital version. If you had a physical version, you just needed to enter the club nintendo code with it to get the free game. Would have been nice if they done this again with the switch version, but even if they did, they don't really have a lot of games to choose from.
@chiefeagle02 Since I own it on Wii U
along with the dlc I see no reason to purchase it on Switch myself.
@UK-Nintendo It would be great if you didn't comment again until then.
@RedMageLanakyn
Yep, they did, though it was acceptable to buy physical too and still get a free digital game. I think it varied by region, but if I recall the list for the U.S. was, Pikmin 3, Windwaker HD, Wii Party U and Super Mario Bros U.
@RedMageLanakyn there was a deal, yeah, but it was just "buy Kart 8 by a certain date to get a free download from this range of games". Kart could be digital or physical. I got Wind Waker HD for free download after buying Kart on disc.
(Sorry, just saw several others make the same point lol)
I wish they had swapped out some of the textures with higher resolution ones. Most of them look pretty good considering they were designed for 720p but there are few here and there that don't look great.
@DrkBndr Right, it would've been a couple indies or something. No way they would give out zelda. I hate to say it, but i miss the old days of club nintendo, and the deals they offered.
@FredBiletnikoff oh sorry if I upset you with my comment. You can always use the ignore feature. Hope that helps
@UK-Nintendo And you can ignore Nintendo Life posts until you stop being miserable. I get it, you're not happy. We all got that with every single thing you post. It's OK to post criticism, but it's boring on every single article.
Own it already, been playing it for years.
@FredBiletnikoff and again it's a Internet forum. People have opinions and people agree or disagree but we all have a right to our opinion. Again you can choose to ignore. And going back to my initial comment, read it again.
The proper battle mode makes me want it I love having friends over and having a few beers while playing that. So much fun.
Don't have a Switch, but I know for a fact that I'll double dip on this and Zelda.
Day 1 for sure. My wife leaves the country for a good month, leaving me to play this game religiously. New LAN modes means I'm hosting some mean LAN parties for this. I already played this game for the past 3 plus years, and am ready to play until the next Mario Kart.
I got Pikmin 3 for free during the promotion, well worth the money!
@sillygostly A totally fine point. I suspect this will be something that can be enabled and it will limit the points you earn online, the stars you earn in cups, etc. I know most of the folks here won't be using it... but I have a four year old who is DYING to play after watching me play with her sister for years. She just doesn't have the ability to do it quite yet. Having this as an option will be wonderful.
That's something Nintendo doesn't get enough praise for. For many of their games, there's something you can enable to make playing viable for gamers of all ability (without compromising the experience for the hardcore crowd in any way). This is a good thing!
The driving assist is fine. I won't use it, but how could letting people that aren't necessarily skilled at games play a bad thing? My girlfriend would love to play without frustration and so would my niece.
I get the Wii U crowd not feeling like this is an upgrade. I don't have a Wii U, so it's a new game to me. And millions of others. I haven't played Mario Kart since being a child on GameCube, and it's a day one but, more because a lot of family and loved ones will play this game with me. Im hardly a Nintendo fan. As much as I love the Switch, I wouldn't give up my PS4 for it( P5 has kept me from visiting Hyrule since it came out), but kudos to Nintendo for giving a platform for the hardcore and non gamers to have a console and games to enjoy together.
Now let's get that GameCube VC going so I can find out what I missed out on in Mario Sunshine please.
Never owned the Wii U version though I played all the tracks, including DLC with friends and family.
Definitely looking forward to this on day one so I can introduce it to my kids.
So pumped for this. Happy to play my favorite game on the go.
My whole family is waiting for this. Distilled essence of Nintendo!!
It's a pity there's no new courses. Happy with the Wii U version.
This version costs more than the Wii U version did at launch... So, I'm probably gonna sit this one out.
Not enough to warrant a launch day purchase.
@LeRaposa Nintendo didn't design the textures for 720p, Nintendo don't even consider texture resolution, they just throw them in and hope for the best. Nintendo historically have NEVER ever been any good at designing detailed textures - the textures in Mario Kart 8 came no where near close to maximising even the Wii U!
Mario Kart 8 is designed to be simplistic, sharp, bold and colourful and this is exactly what Nintendo set out to achieve.
The textures are high resolution and sharp as it is, putting in even higher resolution textures would be a waste of time for a game in this style.
Switch is also MEMORY LIMITED, the game has to squeeze onto a 13GB card?
@liveswired
MK8 Deluxe is less than 7GB in size, which means it is being stored on a 8GB cartridge.
I have the Wii-U one. I have all the DLC. I also have Mario Kart 7 that I can take anywhere. Still, I will buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the full price on day 1.
@UK-Nintendo lol I could be wrong lol but we always have at least 1 new mk per console.
@Slim1999 lol. Exactly. I doubt we will get Mario kart 9 on switch. It might get complicated if does come on the switch.
You'll have online play on Wii u mk8
Online play on switch mk8dx then online play on switch mk9.
Let's just hope they add more tracks as dlc in the future
There will be a kart 9, or maybe a rebrand with smash kart or nintendo kart. It wont get confusing with numbered editions and no doubt they will have switched off the wii u online servers by then anyway...
This is just a filler for now, mainly for those who never owned a wii u. I am getting it but sold the wii u version to help pay for it.
As for the wii u free game promotion. That was 2 years after launch to try and get more to buy wii u. Got wind waker free that time. They might do it again in future but not 2 months after launch.
The only noticeable thing, which I said on an earlier topic, was a Gold Mario. I wonder how you unlock this one?
It's moments like these I wonder...
...why didn't they give at least an option to play N64 Rainbow Road in 3 laps?
I know a lot of players (and reviewers) felt that the lack of 'this' kind of battle mode in Mario Kart 8 brought it down. However, I'm in the extreme minority who never cared for battle. Personally I was kind of hoping for a few new tracks. Granted there is still the opportunity for DLC for this fresh release (and I hope there is).
I'll still get the game regardless though - I'd already traded my Wii U and the original version.
I have wiiu version, but still very excited for this game. A lot of my friends have skipped wiiu, but they have bought/ will buy a switch this time, we'll have a blast LAN partying.
I'm actually pretty pumped for this, even though I own the Wii U version. It'll be great playing at work during breaks and bringing it to my girlfriend's for some tabletop racing!
Is the fire hopping exploit gone? That's more important than much of the new stuff.
I haven't got a Switch yet (waiting for a gold Zelda edition) but I think they should offer a discount for owners of the Wii U version for being loyal to a failed console!
given that the differences between this and the Wii U version can fit in a minute long video, I think I'll pass. On Wii U I already unlocked everything except the gold glider, triple starred every course up to Mirror, and bought the DLC. Looks awesome for those who never got the chance to play it on Wii U though!
