It's rather fascinating to think how far The Binding of Isaac has come on Nintendo platforms. After being initially denied from the Nintendo ecosystem a few years back due to controversial content in the game, it later went on to make an appearance on both 3DS and Wii U, with the most recent and complete edition making an appearance on the Nintendo Switch. Now, it seems that it may be going even a bit farther, as Nicalis has started teasing an Isaac amiibo.
Nicalis recently tweeted out a picture of what appears to be a mostly completed amiibo of the titular Isaac, referencing The Binding of Issac: Afterbirth+ in the description. It's just shy of an official announcement of course, but we'd be willing to bet that this is going to become a real thing sometime in the near-ish future. Here's the tweet:
What do you think? Would you buy an Issac amiibo? What kind of functionality do you think it could have? Drop us a comment in the section below.

It should give you a follower in the game which looks exactly like the amiibo.
This is great and all but... Nicalis... If I get down on my knees and beg, will you make Cave Story amiibos? Because I'll do that if it will help.
YES! Instant pre-order!
I've bought Isaac many times now. This news makes me so happy, can't wait.
I'd buy that in a heartbeat!
I'd rather have a Meat Boy Amiibo. And SMB on the Switch.
All of my yes!
Watched a friend play it on Switch in docked mode and he literally brought the game down to 1/4 speed with all the slowdown and lag from all the effects on screen. It was pretty terrible. Also allowed him to beat a tough boss fight even though it took him 5 minutes. Maybe it needs patches before amiibo....
YES PLEASE I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE
This is maybe the first amiibo I have absolutely no interest in but good for more third party amiibo! I just really do not like BoI.
Cool idea but what will the amiibo do in the game? If it doesn't do anything special, they should just make a standard figure and skip the whole amiibo aspect seeing as their interaction with the game is a main draw to an "amiibo". If it does work with the game, does that mean the Switch, 3DS and Wii U versions will all be patched to support it? If it's only for Switch, it seems like a bum deal for fans on the other systems. To be clear, I'm excited for the possibility of the figure but this aspect seems to be curiously absent from the discussion.
No interest in this (blasphemous) game, but I'll probably grab the amiibo.
The only amiibo I've had no interest in whatsoever are the Skylanders amiibo (not paying through the teeth to buy four versions of the game for them), and I'm still a little bitter about the Gold Megaman amiibo, which has not been released in Australia or Europe.
I love Binding of Isaac and I love amiibos so that'd be a match made in heaven imo. As long as it does look as odd as the Shovel Knight amiibo when compared to other Amiibos.
I wish they'd come out with amiibos without those round bases. The wolf Link amiibo is a great example of how ridiculous this can be. It made sense for Smash, but I think they should be aiming to be more like action figures than statues.
If amiibo suddenly became action figures, then where do you suppose that they should insert the NFC chip? Take Smash Link for instance, or any character in a dress. It's not only impractical, it's virtually impossible, and will severely limit the design possibilities of future amiibo, and will increase the cost of each amiibo as part of the design of each amiibo will need to incorporate exactly where the NFC chip will need to be located.
The base is a neat and standardised method of storing the NFC chip (while making all amiibo displayable on a flat surface) while also preventing damage to the Wii U Gamepad, New 3DS Touch Screen and the analogue stick of the right Joy-Con.
Well... Good idea, obviously, but I hope they'd choose something a bit less... boring and basic. The whole thing seems a bit bland and boring like this, I'm sure they could come up with a much better pose.
@TheLobster I agree completely. I have almost all the available Amiibo but this one I will be skipping for sure. I can't stand BOI. Bleck.
I love Isaac as a character, but the amiibo would have to look better than that for me to buy it.
Yes, it could function much like the Shovel Knight amiibo . I would buy it .
The feet would be a good choice. As close to the bottom as would be practical. I guess it depends on how small you could make the chip.
@RedMageLanakyn , WHAT? I have a copy of the game on my Switch and I have never noticed any lag or slowdowns of any sort in any way . In my experience the game is far from terrible on Nintendo Switch, there is an update available for it maybe your friend needs to update it.
Tears of joy.
This would make me buy the game.
The idea of an amiibo is cool but at the moment I'd much prefer an update on the European physical release - confirmed date, price, box art, instruction book info would be much appreciated
@Sir_funkington maybe they are waiting to do an amiibo bundle
Grrr! mumble grumble, of course i would buy this but i want the actual game first..... R.A.P Engaged (rant avoidance protocols)
Comment ended...shutting down...
honestly this looks pretty cool i kinda can't wait to buy the game.
Erm.....hmm. The black lips are not how I invisioned the character based on how he looks in-game.
Looks off.
I was an enormous fan of The Binding of Isaac when I had a Wii U! It was the perfect game to play after work to unwind with. I will definitely be considering buying the Nintendo Switch version too, at some point.
Why has no one commented on the eyes on that thing?
I've put almost 200 hours into Rebirth on 3DS alone. Absolutely getting this.
Now just to wait until the European release of Afterbirth+ ...
@RedMageLanakyn I've put over 20hrs into Isaac on Switch and have yet to see even a hint of slowdown! Weird.
@Gorlokk couldn't agree more and ya beat me to it. Cave story, being my favorite game, would be perfect for an amiibo. So many things can be used for that game(exclusive weapon(s), a boss to go with it, a mode, etc.
Never played Binding of Isacc, but I would
@Romeo-75 @xxAcesHighxx Well, i did see it with my own eyes, it was like the game was in slow motion. It happened over the weekend, so unless it got a patch this week, he was on the current build. He had over 50 hours in and said it had only happened one other time, and only on one specific boss. He did have a lot of power ups, like 5 pets, poison shot, etc. I've personally never seen BOI do that, and the fact that it lasted an entire endgame boss fight was crazy.
I would definitely buy it!
Isn't Reggie the one who pushed for the game to come to Nintendo systems? There's one decision he had a part in that was actually a good one.
I'd totally buy that Amiibo.
I'll pass on this; however, if they make a Cave Story amiibo I'll bite.
They probably will only do that if this one succeeds.
Without a second thought, yes. I'd like to see them add a cool pattern to the base, though. I mean, I don't know if Nintendo or most retailers would sign off on it, but I imagine a red pentagram would be a perfect design to go under Isaac. And I think having a random buddy character/power-up get added to your character would be a good way to use it in game. Or heck, even something small like a random Card or pill (that can either help or hurt). Limit it to one (or a few) uses per day, and I think it'd be a lot of fun in-game, and an awesome Amiibo. I bought Shovel Knight right away, and I'd happily add Isaac to the mix!
The amiibo does look kinda ugly, but that's not really unusual for something Binding of Isaac related. I'll most definitely get it though as I'm a big fan of the game.
Day one.
I would happily buy an Isaac amiibo... From Golden Sun.
The Isaac amiibo. Functionality: Pain and suffering. Isaac never gets anything good without that
Not really.
I'd rather have Nintendo start making amiibo cards. I don't want more amiibo that takes up space, its seriously frustrating. I only own like 6 amiibo. I want some of the new Legend of Zelda amiibo's as cards. Let me by amiibo cards that takes no space at all! Or let me buy them digitally!
The slowdown in Issac occurs when there is the right combination off abilities and certain enemies. Also for some reason the full size room that is almost all camp fires.
You could literary play hundreds of hours without seeing it, a lot have actually.
I think more 3rd Party Amiibos would be cool, but i would rather like to see Shantae then Isaac.
Gross
I do not want an amiibo, but I sure would like Nicalis to finally release Cave Story 3D version in 3DS eShop. The wait has only been six years so far, go Tyrone!
