Astral Chain is now a year old. In this soapbox piece, Mitch Vogel explains why he thinks it's one of the most significant Switch titles yet.
This past weekend marked the first anniversary of the release of Astral Chain, the latest product of the long-standing collaboration between PlatinumGames and Nintendo. Featuring hectic cyberpunk battles, stylish anime action, and oodles of cats, it didn’t take long for this release to become a fan favourite and one of the best-selling games for the platform. However, Astral Chain was an even more significant title than it might appear at first glance, so much so that we’d argue it was the most important release that Nintendo put out last year.
For a quick recap, let’s take a look at what else Nintendo put out last year up until Astral Chain. It opened up the year with the January release of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and a month later, we got the surprise release of Tetris 99. A month after that, we got Yoshi’s Crafted World, and then there was a bit of a dry spell until we got Super Mario Maker 2 in June. Then in July, we got the double feature of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Notice anything? All of these games were sequels or re-releases. Yes, it’s true that sequels comprise most of a AAA developer’s lineup, but part of the joy of a fresh platform is the chance to play brand new games and franchises that you’ve never seen before. And, to be fair, Nintendo was (and still is…) a little light on those new experiences. Labo? Sushi Striker? ARMS? With perhaps the exception of that last one, Nintendo still hadn’t really taken a shot at putting out an original big-budget game that ‘belonged’ to the Switch. It needed a game that makes a statement, the kind of thing that speaks for itself.
It finally got that game in August with Astral Chain, an original game in every way. The PlatinumGames billing all but guaranteed that the third-person action mechanics would be well-executed and satisfying, while the original IP allowed the developers to run wild with some cool ideas. Controlling two (well, one and a half) characters at once presented some interesting concepts, such as how the titular chain that connects the two is just as important to a fight as the fighters themselves. Then there were the open-ended detective sections, which worked as a nice palette cleanser in between battles and showed that Platinum can do more than just bombastic bosses and set-piece arena brawls.
Who could forget that thrilling intro sequence on the motorcycle, racing through a neon-infused tunnel while being hotly pursued by demonic entities?
The overall aesthetic was something new, too. Neither Nintendo nor Platinum had any cyberpunk-inspired games in their catalogues and the unique blend of tech and occultic themes led to a rather unique final product. Who could forget that thrilling intro sequence on the motorcycle, racing through a neon-infused tunnel while being hotly pursued by demonic entities? Or the moment you capture your first Chimera and get to see the combat system in full for the first time?
And then to think such a cool aesthetic was so seamlessly blended with Platinum's goofy sense of humour. Whose idea was it to give every single vending machine its own personality? Or to have a toilet fairy that you have to 'free’ by giving it toilet paper you find in levels? Or to have an entire game-spanning sidequest about collecting cats? Astral Chain very quickly proved itself to be an action game in a league of its own, one that wasn’t afraid to take chances and try things that would set it apart from the pack.
It’s important to remember, too, that PlatinumGames was still trying to pick up the pieces from the rough few years it had endured up to that point. After the release of Bayonetta 2, which didn’t sell all too well on the ill-fated Wii U, Platinum released The Legend of Korra, Transformers: Devastation, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, all of which were met with decent to poor reviews and low sales.
It’s important to remember, too, that PlatinumGames was still trying to pick up the pieces from the rough few years it had endured up to that point
These licensed projects were all mostly just done for the paycheck, however, as the company’s next main project was the ambitious Xbox-exclusive Scalebound. That one looked to be shaping up to be one of the best games ever made by Platinum, until development issues led to Microsoft cancelling the project in 2017. After that point, Platinum had nothing to show for four years of focused development on an IP it didn’t own, and it was running dangerously low on cash.
It wasn’t until Nier:Automata’s runaway success in 2017 that Platinum began to make a comeback, and Hideki Kamiya even went so far as to say that Nier was solely responsible for saving the company from bankruptcy. Still, one title could very well represent a fluke rather than a trend, and though mobile games Lost Order and World of Demons helped to bolster the bottom line, those two releases were hardly headline-grabbing examples that screamed ‘Platinum is back!’ Astral Chain, then, was the title that solidified the positive trend. Its focused mechanics and hard to put down gameplay showed that the company was still capable of recapturing the manic magic of its earlier releases while also boldly going in new directions. It showed that Platinum hadn’t lost its touch after all, that the company had been knocked down, but not out.
All of this is to say, Astral Chain was the most important title put out by Nintendo in 2019. For the Big N, it represented a much-needed yet risky foray into trying something fresh for its relatively young platform. For PlatinumGames, it represented a means of restoration after the litany of mistakes and bad luck that nearly spelt the end for the studio itself. Moreover, it showed that the Switch itself is a viable platform for some impressive games that aren’t simply ports or sequels. The cyberpunk art style, fast-paced action, and gripping gameplay offered up by Astral Chain cannot be found anywhere else, and the glimpse that this release offers into what the Switch is capable of bodes well for the future of the platform – if developers can be as brave as Platinum in testing that potential.
For the Big N, it represented a much-needed yet risky foray into trying something fresh for its relatively young platform
There seems to be a growing sentiment around the Switch which holds that the platform’s worth should only be measured by how well it can run old games. That the quality of its library is defined by how many high profile ports it gets. Can it run Witcher 3? Can it run Dragon Quest XI? Can it run DOOM? Of course it can, but Astral Chain stands as a firm reminder that it can do so much more if studios are willing to put in the elbow grease to make something memorable. Hopefully, Nintendo has understood this and has some big unannounced projects on the way, as it’s the platform holder's responsibility to lead the way and show that it has enough faith in the Switch to swing for the fences by doubling down on some brand-new ideas.
Only time will tell if Astral Chain will remain a one-off, though the developers have mentioned that it sold above expectations and that they have plenty of ideas they’d like to further explore. Even if it does remain a standalone release, Astral Chain surely stands as one of the best games yet made for the Switch and is a shining example of what new experiences the platform is capable of.
What do you think of Astral Chain? Did it leave much of an impression on you? What other sorts of new ideas would you like to see Nintendo or Platinum explore? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

One of my favourite games last year for Switch in what was a pretty mediocre year saved by this and Luigis Mansion 3. This is still one of my top Switch titles and the best game I've played by Platinum
Astral Chain was and is fantastic. I was sad when it was all over!
I liked Astral Chain more than Bayonetta, but not as much as Nier.
Astral Chain is in the top 5 of best Switch games.
I honestly think this was such an average game. It pained me to have to keep going back to play it just to get it finished because I can’t leave things half done.
The music was good though.
Waifu Uncovered is better
2019 was the year of Fire Emblem and Mario Maker for the switch.
This game was so under the radar but so good.
Looking forward to the sequel
Astral chain deserves a spot in smashbros.
What a gem!
Platinum knows how to bring the goods.
Platinum Games has done some of their best work with Nintendo: Madworld, The Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2. Even Star Fox Zero was pretty good, it's a game where motion controls was the wrong way to go. Astral Chain is Platinum Games at their best!
I really liked it early on, although I get didn't get the same depth of enjoyment I did with trying to improve my score with the Bayonettas and W101.
Astral Chain is one of the best action games I’ve played. It was a refreshing gameplay experience. There a lot of other amazing AAA games on the Switch but this definitely stands out in the crowd for all the right reasons.
Still holding out for a Transformers: Devastation port.
this game was dope as hell
best game of 2019 for me including feth and sekiro
Maybe I need to play this more, it’s crazy dull so far.
Not like the immediacy of Bayonetta
Definitely my favorite Switch exclusive of last year (and probably the first since 2017 that can stand alongside BotW, Odyssey, & XC2), and that's saying a lot because it was a pretty good year for exclusives considering Luigi's Mansion 3, Link's Awakening remake, Daemon X Machina, & Yoshi's Crafted World also released as well (heck, even LABO VR was pretty neat for awhile).
Now that I think about it... without Astral Chain, the switch would have gathered a lot more dust, for me personally.
Last year was pretty strong for the Switch but my personal highlight was definitely Astral Chain.
This game should always be used as an example on how NOT to tack on multiplayer to your single player game.
For those of you loving the game, I'm happy for you, but go find someone to play with and try to play thru it all as multplayer. Now, I'm not talking just about the 2nd player having nothing to do for half the game while you look for cans in the city segments, I'm talking about the way the game forced each player to use 1 joycon each, and therefore player 1 was unable to enter the menu during game play. The only way to enter the menu was to have the second person drop out.
For those thinking - well it's really a single player game, not 2 player - well it is, and they probably should have left it that way if they were going to do such a horrible job adding it.
For the counter example, I bought Luigi's Masnion 3 for my wife on sale recently. The 2 player in that is so good, that neither of us can imagine playing the game in single player. It supports 2 joycons for each player, but also Pro and faux Pro controllers. And player 2 has almost more to do than player 1 - except open doors, that's about the only limitation.
So yes, you can make a single player game work, and work really well, in 2 player.
After watching my 2 sons play Astral Chain - they bought it to play together - I wont' be playing it myself. After playing LM3 w/ my wife I will go back and play it itself just to see how different it must be, it works so well in 2 player and genuinely curios how it can even work single player, a couple of those boss battles are weird.
Also, the AC story line starts out really compelling, builds up near the middle, then turns into a quagmire even Squaresoft couldnt' have dug themselves out of near the end, it just makes no sense at all.
It was my favorite game of 2019. Everyting about it was sublime for me; the graphics, the art direction, the character design, the gameplay. Just a really awesome experience.
Good piece, I'm currently playing through Astral Chain now it's a great action title. Feels like a Platinum title, but brings some new ideas to the table(such as the investigation parts). Art style and music is awesome too.
I Bayonetta 2 is my favorite platinum game. Astral chain was OK but that fight with that lady was cool.
2019 GOTY IMO
Nintendo needs to do a Sony and buy some 2nd party developers to work exclusively on their platform.
It was an amazing game, but it has managed to stay under the radar for most people. It was announced, released...and everyone that played it really enjoyed the experience.
...I guess all of the drama and publicity really helps people remember games, but I'm glad I was able to play it
Astral Chain was a 9/10 for me, exceptional game and a really unique combat system. Decent post game too.
My one issue was the silent main character, really detracted from the game for me at points. S/he had a voice actor as they were voiced if you didn’t pick them.
Everything made by Platinum (except the Activision meddling games) is pure gold.
However I think that W101 and Bayonetta 1&2 are way better than Astral Chain. It’s a stellar 3rd place though. Have yet to try Nier, it’s in my backlog.
I was never really interested in Platinum and their parade of beat em ups until this game. It's so much more than just another beat em up, its gameplay is so varied and broadly appealing that it definitely stands up there as one of the best Switch games of 2019 and maybe of all time. I'd gladly welcome a sequel.
@bert0503 You lost me at Star Fox Zero but I still play Madworld on a regular basis, so much fun
@carlos82 What? How was 2019 a mediocre year?
Fire Emblem
Mario Maker 2
Zelda Links Awakening Remake
Dragon Quest XI S
Luigi's Mansion
Astral Chain
Pokémon Sword and Shield
Witcher III
Star Wars Pinball - my guilty beer night pleasure
Untitled Goose Game
And tons and tons of amazing indies and ports such as Ori, Cuphead and all FF games? My backlog grew massively last year!
If you'd say meagre 2020, I'd agree. But then again, every aspect of this year is meagre.
On topic: My goodness how I loved Astral Chain. How I envy those that have yet to discover it.
@Bolt_Strike I would go as far as to say Platinum are currently the kings of stylish beat-em up titles.
I love this game, it really feels like a PS4/Xbox game with its focus on a huge world to explore, storyline, grand boss fights, awesome combat, etc. It’s the first game I bought on my Switch that made the Switch feel like it had its own identity in my mind (virtually everything prior maybe save Odyssey was on Wii U in some form).
It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the games on Switch, I highly recommend people to try it out. I liked Bayonetta but didn’t like how it was purely focused on combat, this has a nice mix of exploration, traversal, combat, and story that makes it feel like a much better experience
@Juga I personally think Astral Chain is a lot easier to control than Wonderful 101, and is way more compelling a game. Check out some YouTube videos to see what I mean!
Mmmm had this since was released loved the bike intro but made me sad that I don’t there there are more vehicle sections. So only played about 30 mins. Bayonetta 2 had over 100 hours of fun what a game. Will do ac one day xx
@Friendly To be fair I didn't play Dragon Quest back then and having just picked it up it is great. As for the others, Links Awakening needed more polish and I wish they'd have expanded it, I got bored of Mario Maker 2 pretty quickly and I don't rate those Pokemon games at all. I already had The Witcher 3 and Cuphead elsewhere and quite a few others so maybe that didn't help
My favorite platinum game so far ! Loved it
@carlos82 fair enough
Hope you’ve found some games you liked on switch this year! And I hope for some solid releases next year too. Fingers crossed!
Nintendo needs FRESH content, sequel or not remasters and ports...
Loved it. Almost as much as bayo
@Friendly I have PS4 so the gaps don't bother me and I play a lot of retro stuff. Just got into Dragon Quest XI and Animal Crossing is great. All the upcoming Mario games have got me pretty excited though so I'm happy
2019 had so many games coming out for the switch. Especially in August-September. I had to get really creative with EB Games trades to get everything.
Well, with the high score I hope it sold well, but it passed me by. If its sales were not that good I guess it could be like the two bus scenario, you wait to a long time for a bus and then two arrive together.
.... example, this year is scarce for Nintendo games, but then two are released five weeks apart. Pikmin and Super Mario All Stars. Pikmin sales will suffer. £50 is a lot of money for a lot of gamers and Mario will get their money.
On the other hand, I and others who may have only bought Pikmin out of desperation at not having a Nintendo game to play, but did not really want to pay full price for an old port, can now give it a miss in favour of the three Mario games.
Bought it sold it! Awful game
@zool apparantly sold above expectations already last January.
https://www.destructoid.com/stories/astral-chain-director-pleased-with-sales-that-surpassed-expectations--577318.phtml
I rate Astral Chain, but it's a bit short of greatness.
Mechanically it's decent but Plat's games live and die by their combat, and here it may be too complicated for its own good - there are a ton of moves to learn and so many different skills to equip on your Legion, so much so that I doubt I'll ever achieve true mastery of it.
The dodge move lacks sufficient i-frames imho and also takes you too far away in too long a time, often putting you in the way of another enemy attack. This often meant I got the "sloppy strikes" rating through not much fault of my own.
Compounding these is a camera that felt haphazard at times, and can be downright useless when facing flying enemies.
Overall I didn't feel really incentivized to properly learn the combat and was ok with just button mashing to get through a lot of it. If they ever make a sequel I hope they simplify and tighten the combat.
Could not care less for this game. Sorry but I'm not big on platinum and it's great that Nintendo has more folks making games for them but few of these titles really compare to their own.
@Friendly that then prompts the question, what we're his expectations?
It was not at Nier Automata's level, but still an enjoyable Platinum action game.
Bayo3 and Babylon's Tower are next. Been a great few years for Platinum fans 👍
@carlos82 Mediocre year? Are you kidding? 2019 was one of the best years for the console. If you had to rank the years, you'd probably go 2017, 2019, 2018 and 2020 (though AC NH and Mario 3D All Stars might push 2020 ahead of 2018). Luigi's Mansion 3, Link's Awakening, Astral Chain, Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Super Mario Maker 2, Tetris 99, Super Nintendo Switch Online, Witcher 3, Dragon's Quest XI, Ori, Cuphead... and on and on.
It took me a while to warm up to Astral Chain, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. Very fun, great graphics, awesome music.
Nintendo needs more adult oriented exclusives like this. I love Mario and Zelda like everyone else, but I like new experiences that are more mature as well.
It's not a landmark game like Nier: Automata, but it's really good. I also wish there were more Switch exclusives like it.
@kingbk Agreed. For the first week (which was only about a month ago), I wasn't sure I was going to feel motivated to stick with the game. My first impression was, "The controls are a train wreck!" But I've been warming up to it and can honestly say I'm enjoying it now. I'm still not crazy about some of the controls, but overall, I'm pretty impressed with the game.
Astral Chain was one Switch game I was somewhat curious in after how much amazement that NieR: Automata and even Bayonetta 2 gave me, and it further solidified my fanaticism for Platinum Games as a whole.
Upon playing it, though, I didn't really love it. It's quite flashy and action-packed for the appeals, but it just felt too repetitive and dull for me (even for Platinum Games standards) in that constantly swapping between the player and the legion got tiring through and through (especially since the legions are also your only way to jump across gaps, which is pretty faulty in design, in my opinion; why Platinum Games couldn't give us an actual jump button is baffling in many ways).
The progression also lacked focus as it can't seem to make up its mind on whether it wants to be a "detective game" or a "butt-kicking game", and the game just doesn't excel well in both of those areas. I'm always open to variety in any game I play, but when it comes down to the point where it's constantly changing up the gameplay for very little (if not, NO) reason at all, that's where a problem occurs.
All that said, I found Astral Chain to be an okay game and I did have some fun with it as a rental before beating it and taking it back. I just wish Platinum Games had done so much better with this product...
@TheFox Yeah, the controls are odd. I never got super comfortable with them, but I learned to live with them.
The only negatives I have for the game are the following:
1. The files are way too long. I would have rather made the files smaller and just had more of them.
2. The writing is pretty cliche ridden and predictable. Nintendo has never been known for strong storytelling, and yes I know Platinum made the game, but it is a Nintendo published title.
3. I hate the grading system that Platinum has for boss battle fights. Luckily, Astral Chain allows you to turn it off, which made it much more enjoyable for me.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed the game.
I have wanted this all year. Please put it on sale. $30 would be fantastic!
The Wii seemed to get way more new exclusive IP from Nintendo than the Switech.
@Juga it doesn’t control that much like W101, but the controls are a tad tough.. though not as tough as W101.
For me there is something satisfying about PlatinumGames’s controls. You can button mash on the easier difficulties but to really get good at their games requires effort so that gives them a lot of replayability.
@farmer_humpf loved nier to bits but bayoneta looked great at the time but didnt like it any way near as much a nier.
I’m not a fan of the setting and gameplay style, but I’m happy to see it was well received.
@Juga Whoever told you it controls like W101 was lying to you. I don't know who to explain it, but the controls are so on point that even the most average gamer can make incredible combos.
I think there was even an interview with Platinum about it, they did't try to make easy controls but they did. Rent it or borrow it, at least try it once.
@Juga Trust me, it's way easier then W101. I just finished W101 a week ago and enjoyed it a lot, but it was unfair and frustrating in so many ways. Astral Chain is never like this in no situation!
I bought it last year in December during a sale and never popped it in to play it. It might be the game this fall.
I just love how Ring Fit Adventure is ignored when mentioned New IP when it's much more successful and popular than anything mentioned on this. Nintendo Life, be better.
Ignoring Astral Chain, I don't think any platinum game besides Nier has sold over 1 million units on a single console has it? And I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts the Square Enix name had more to do with Nier's success than platinum's involvement, sadly. The fact AC sold over 1 mill as a switch exclusive is a great accomplishments, and well deserved as I absolutely love this game.
@switchvogel
Just an FYI, the caption for the article reads, "And Platinum, for for that matter".
Fantastic game. Nier aside, this is Platinums best game to date. Bayo is linear on rails arcade niche, w101 is a joy of an experience, but deeply, fundamentally flawed in many many ways and best played in easy as a result. This game isn't perfect but it comes closest to balanced outside nier which is not entirely Platinums game.
@rjejr lol yeah, i agree about the story. It really hit is stride at arc mall, started getting really interesting at the wall.... And then degenerated into.... That. It tried to make sense, but didn't, and it kind of invalidates all prior characterization of one of the main villains.
had to many mechanics
@Juga as someone that does not enjoy games like bayonetta i have to say I enjoyed this game quite a lot. There is much more to do than fighting and the fighting is not as button mashing as others (although I played it on normal and not on hard as suggested for platinum veterans). I dos not play w101 but i had no troubles with the Gameplay is just that you need to use the right stuck to Control the beast but it is not something that you have to do all the time anyway
@Nemesis666 At the time AC released, Ring Fit didn't exist yet; that came about two months later. I agree that's another big new IP for Nintendo, but it had yet to arrive for the time period this article is focused on.
@NEStalgia Both my wife and I were watching the boys play, and the story was really coming along, reminded me a bit of the very unerappreciated Binary Domain, which I'm still waiting on a sequel in the vain of Vanquish, but then it really stops making sense. It's on par with Matrix 2 and 3 for me not really caring anymore at that point.
The cardboard box head is one of the best skins ever though as they keep it on during some really intense cut scenes, it's hysterical. 🤣
I couldn't get over the art style of Astral Chain. Their giant foreheads just threw me.
I’m confused as to how Platinum were ‘picking up the pieces’ before Astral Chain considering Nier Automata was absolutely their game despite being published by Squeenix. That’s the game that solidified their position as the best in the business at action games.
@frabbit Same here. I was ready for it to be over around the halfway point. I forced myself to see it all the way through, but I wish I’d just played bayonetta or Nier Automata again...
Is that Todoroki!
please fire whoever is writing these soapboxes first a feature on nintendogs and how it can prepare people to own a dog (Which is nonesense)
also saying this game was 2019 most needed game when it was the most underappreciate and fastest thrown under the bus.
Fire Emblem won 2019. Go home.
Despite their clear excellence in game design, in my opinion Platinum actually lacks great art design. When not making games for other franchises (Nier, and Okami's art was directed by Naoki Katakai), their characters and motifs are generally uninteresting.
I haven’t beaten this game yet. I guess I should do something about that eh?
@iLikeUrAttitude I like fire emblem more but I will have to disagree luigis mansion was very popular for good reason. I think it was a combination of the three that was Nintendos big games
I'm surprised by how many people seem mad about this article and then list a bunch of cartoony and casual games. Now, I like cartoony and casual games, but I think that was the point of this article. The Switch has a lot of those sorts of games. What it didn't have a lot of was first party games that cater to a more "hard core" single player crowd.
@Judgedean Maybe Nintendo should start with buying Platinum? Is that too crazy of a thought..? I know they made a big whoop about going independent, but eh, talk is cheap and development is expensive.
Platinum could start with making a Kirby action adventure, combos changing on the fly with each enemy you suck up. Kirby too out of left field? How about a Platinum-developed Kid Icarus, or Custom Robo?
Then buy Shin'en Multimedia and get them on a new F-Zero, followed up with Star Fox Grand Prix.
But the real goal with buying Shin'en would be to get their engineers to optimize and overhaul their in-house game engines across the board. They are such wizards at optimizing for the Switch that they could help build incredible engines for each internal dev team. They could even get Monolithsoft games running at 720 in handheld mode!
Great game, but they left unfinished! No multi channel sound, and they ( I feel anyway) did not polish the graphics as best as they could. I think it was rushed at the end. 😢😢😢
After wasting my money on 101 I’ll never play a Platinum game... aside from Star Fix Zero which made me hate them even more.
@NintendoPok
I'm not joking?!
I have more time in smash bros. than you have
But it's a party game. I can't play it by myself and enjoy it to it's fullest potential.
AC didn't come out in 2019 so I don't know why it's even a part of the conversation.
And I didn't buy pokemon because I wanted to skip some generations before I invest a lot of time in to catching the SAME pokemon I just did.
To cap it off, please don't attack my taste in gaming after one comment. That's a bit childish, innit?
Astral Chain and Fire Emblem made 2019 for me personally. To be honest, I prefer Astral Chain over Nier, though Nier is fun, but ac isn't as pretentious. Never could get into bayonetta. After playing two hours it just got too grating.
Still havent played it, but from what I saw of the gameplay mechanics, its a maybe if I find it in a bargain bin at the only computer game shop on this island.
Still haven't played, waiting for a whopper sale on this one
Not saying 1m copies isn’t a good result but does it really qualify as ‘one of the best selling’ games on Switch? Top 40, sure.
@Ulysses 100% agree. Nintendo selling Rare to Microsoft was a massive mistake for them. Those developers you mention definitively should be on Nintendo's buy list. Nintendo has more than enough money sitting in the bank.
Currently I am playing with Astral Chain and I love it. Absolutely worths its price but.... Bayonetta 1-2 is better because of much higher replayability:-)
@frabbit Completely agree. I have put it aside for now to play some other games and may go back to it if I run out of other games to play (which is unlikely!).
My take from this article... It seems that Nintendo peaked from launch, going into 2019. What I wonder, is it the world that has made me not realize this? Things moving so fast. Or, has Nintendo created a great setup with the Switch and its third party and indie content, that the lean months aren’t as bad compared to the N64 days? 🤷🏾♂️
I got around to playing it in the spring and I really enjoyed it. I would be interested in a sequel.
I pre ordered on day one (since Bayonetta and Nier automata are my favourite games). I hated it with all my heart, slow boring and goddy two shoes cop setting.
A month ago I return to it. Struggled trough the first chapter. And the it clicked on me. The combat system is amazing and worthy of the platinum games standards, amazing music and graphics. The cop setting is stupid, but the story picks up and its fun enough. A game that grows on you the more you play.
Love Astral Chain. It's my favorite new IP of the generation
I still need to pick this one up. There are a lot of elements that I think I'll enjoy, I'm just a bit apprehensive with the action segments after running into some issues with The Wonderful 101: Remastered; that was my first Platinum game, one I enjoyed overall, but some of the controls felt clunky and some QTEs, insta-deaths, and other segments felt a bit unfair (not to mention the final boss fight, while very cool and cinematic, dragged on for AGES). Still, the two seem to be very different games.
Also, there are cats.
@tameshiyaku nier automata is pretentious, and it's all one of those deep thinking about deep things experience type things, though that's not Platinums fault, it's Taros game and world, and is a sequel to an older cult classic game (which is getting remastered though not by platinum.)
@rjejr lol, that matrix comparison isn't too far off. It really was getting interesting, and then stalled, and then just went "ahh, screw it" and went with that mess. The whole game was setup and then they just went "jk, lol, deus ex macguffin"
I love Platinum but I dont like this one. Too anime/superhero movie for me with cliched characters, convoluted and self important story and a few attempts at humour that fall flat. It feels more like a Kojima game than a Platinum title. The geek character is even named Hal. Really?
Combat is decent but Bayonetta excels on that department. The levels are overlong, for an action game it makes them feel repetitive.
I found the final boss ridiculously overpowered and a huge difficulty spike compared to any other boss before. Beat the game and never went back to it.
@Eddyson great thanks for sharing i have the all the spirits.
@graysoncharles i also have a PS4 I beat P5R and FFVII remake sounds like you dont have much variety in gaming besides nintendo
@carlos82 you thought 2019 was a bad year for Switch?! 2020 is positively a drought in comparison
@graysoncharles yet your responding to me. big talk for a big threat dude. Bye.
@scoobdoo explain how Animal crossing Xenoblade Chronicles mario 3d All Stars is a drought......
@NintendoPok a party game and a redux, not exactly great shakes
@NintendoPok 3 games in the span of 7 months. FANTASTIC.
@LUIGITORNADO 4 games zelda game in november.......
@scoobdoo so the zelda game is trash?
Last year and 2017 have a common rivalry: Which one was the best Switch year? If you vote for the first-party side, then 2017 will likely win. But if you'd rather the third-party one, then you'll likely find 2019 being the victor instead.
And both years had at least one big new IP coming, ARMS in the case of 2017, and as you mentioned: Astral Chain really made the headlines in 2019. I hope we see more of this promising franchise.
I'm also a believer that Nintendo is planning a lot of stuff... wait, they just confirmed days ago that a lot of games are coming in 2021! I'm hoping for even more and bigger ones, too. Maybe thanks in part to new hardware....
