Re: Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Could Be Inducted Into The Video Game Hall Of Fame

echoplex

People should stop looking at Candy Crush with their patronising goggles on.

The impact this game (emphasis on game if the bold letters weren't enough) has had on the general public is unfathomable. The amount of people I see playing on their phones (Candy Crush, Candy Crush likes or what you would call shovel ware, looking down at them from your elite gamer's pedestal) today while commuting has skyrocketed over the past few years along with smartphone penetration (please pardon my French). I see businessmen playing Pokemon Go miss their stop. I hear elderly ladies playing Candy Crush Soda curse at their phone. I see couples playing hidden object games insult each other before making out.

The magic of it all.

If this can help change the general opinion that adults playing video games are not only 30 year-old single white males with BO living in their mother's basement, then I'm all for it. Candy Crush's business model might be based on buying extra items in game, I can't see how it doesn't qualify as a game in the first place. I can't see how different this is from Nintendo or others just... selling games (or online subscriptions).

This is a Hall Of Fame. Not the Hall Of C'mon This One's Better In My Opinion. I understand putting Candy Crush on the same level as Zelda, Civ or RE might feel unnerving but I think Candy Crush deserves its spot in there as well, solely based on its popularity (which is a synonym of fame), so maybe not for the same reasons as the others (because frankly on which criteria would you choose between RE or Zelda?) but it still does.

Re: Talking Point: How Long Does Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Take To Beat, Really?

echoplex

I'm 99.1% or something. I don't know what I'm missing. Anyway I feel I beat a game when the main story is over. Call me old but these days everything consisting in collecting [insert number] [items] in a game is just an artificial way to enhance the game's life. Sometimes it's way too obvious and spoils the fun for me (I did get all those Koroks anyway because I thought the map in BotW was worth visiting to the last square centimetre).

Re: Where To Pre-Order Triangle Strategy On Switch

Have they reduced the amount of text screens since the earlier demo? It felt a bit tiresome to read all the back stories for the secondary, tertiary and whatevary characters before making a move.

If I want to learn about the lore, scatter some signs or letters or memos around the world map a la Resident Evil and I might go and tap A to read them.

Since we're in the tactical department, how does Advance Wars compare to this? I'm much more interested in the latter.

Re: Nightdive Studios Wants To Remaster Titles Like Eternal Darkness, But Hasn't Had Any Luck With Nintendo

echoplex

@Scapetti Nightdive's additions to their remasters are never cosmetic. They do add a 2020s touch to them but you can always reverse back to the original look and feel in the options menu.

And Nintendo did charge full price for their HD remaster of Skyward Sword and got away with it — even if that game is much more recent than ShadowMan for instance. But Nintendo is a business, not a charity, and I understand what you mean: some people still expect some gesture towards the fans (I'm among them and I know it's stupid).

Re: Nightdive Studios Wants To Remaster Titles Like Eternal Darkness, But Hasn't Had Any Luck With Nintendo

echoplex

It makes it look like Nintendo won’t do sensible things just because Nintendo didn’t think about it first

Nightivestudios have proved more than once they are very trustworthy. All of their remasters I’ve played were very polished, and if you want the full trip to Nostalville you can actually play the games the way they looked before by turning off the enhanced graphics in the menu.

Re: Nintendo Minute's Kit And Krysta Are Starting Their Own Podcast

Cool! Always liked their awkward, let's-not-talk-about-sex chemistry. That new logo is ugly as hell though. Are they only going to talk about Nintendo games?

And as @Clyde_Radcliffe said, I hope they get to be a little less politically correct and say things they weren't allowed when working at Nintendo.

Re: Nintendo Blocks Another 2,200 Videos On YouTube Featuring Its Music

echoplex

“STOP LISTENING! JUST REMEMBER IT!” as someone else commented in the other article.
Really Nintendo is ridiculous and completely out of touch with their community. Unless these recent moves anticipate a special announcement or something.

I would actually pay an extra fee if they added an OST streaming service to NSO. I know I’m not the only one.

Re: Metroid Dread Producer Hopes It Showcased "Potential" And Inspires Metroidvania Devs

echoplex

I loved Metroid Dread and beat it in a reasonable time, but had absolutely no desire to play it again. Whereas starting a new game of Super Metroid is always exciting. I don't know. It just felt like "Metroidvania by numbers", with challenging fights and great visuals, but that's it. I can't see anything inspirational about it for other devs. That's quite a pretentious thing to say, actually...

Re: Popular Video Game Music YouTube Channel Receives 1,300 Copyright Claims From Nintendo

echoplex

@Daniel36 I agree with you, anybody at the source of any material should be retributed at some point. But unless there's any other way to access this material, people will keep uploading it, most of the time in good faith. It's just that Nintendo keeps blocking this kind of content without offering any other alternative. Just like @Rhaoulos said above, Nintendo is always 2 ou 3 trends late. It's just like they don't want ANY money if they don't come up with the business model that's attached to it. While designing a dated, backwards online service providing access to 25+ year-old games for ±$50 a year is absolutely no problem to them.

Re: Mini Review: Shadow Man Remastered - A Rich, Inscrutable World To Get Lost In

echoplex

@twztid13 The character was very slow and some actions like strafing or walking backwards were a nightmare. Some jumps were also difficult, because of the animations that took forever before your character actually started to jump, so you had to time everything down to the frame. Think playing Mario 64 with Link's steel boots in Ocarina of Time.

In the remaster the character responds instantly. The controls for the camera are also much easier and faster.

Re: Mini Review: Shadow Man Remastered - A Rich, Inscrutable World To Get Lost In

echoplex

@StuartGipp I'm sorry if I gave you the impression to be a little rough in my comment but it was mostly directed at all the other reviews that tend to have the same criticism towards this game. I'm actually glad you took the time to review it and I agree with all the rest. If someone thought this game was worth spending some time and money on a remaster then there's a reason (or more). Thanks for the review!

Downloaded it earlier and already spent 2 hours on it and to be fair I DID get a bit lost but that's because they tweaked a few things here and there right ? Other than that I'm having a blast (from the past).

Re: Mini Review: Shadow Man Remastered - A Rich, Inscrutable World To Get Lost In

echoplex

So it's finally out?
Great! I know it's not the best remaster (or game) but it's always been in my top 3 N64 games so I will gladly double/triple/quadruple dip.

Edit - I don't get the criticism about the maze-like structure of the game when everyone is asking for open-world level design these days. OK, you don't have a mini-map in the corner of the screen with your objectives flashing on it, or an arrow at the top showing you the direction to follow (ok, there's no map at all). Everywhere I read the reviews are focused on how easily you can be lost and I think it's unfair. Why don't we read this about Metroid / Why is this praised in Metroid? Well, Shadowman would be an awful game if exploration was not extremely rewarding. There is no dead-end that doesn't reward you with something. What's more, there's no actual dead-end. Every part of the map is structured to get you to the next (in circumvoluted ways maybe). And you can fast-travel — to more destinations than in Zelda OoT (using this game as an example since it's referenced in this review). So yes, there's some backtracking but things get much easier and handier after a while just like any other well designed game.

Re: Nintendo Minute's Kit And Krysta Say Goodbye In Their "Final Episode"

echoplex

I loved watching them but I wasn't a regular. I would not watch them for months then catch up for the games I cared for. I loved how fake everything sounded, how they tried really hard not to curse or say the slightest negative thing about... anything and avoiding any innuendoes. It was (barely) disguised advertisement, not entertainment, but I still enjoyed watching them.

Re: Random: These Incredible Animal Crossing Animated Shorts Are Essential Viewing

echoplex

Sorry to be Debbie Downer here but where does this stand in a legal point of view? Those videos are great, technically and narratively. But they do re use licensed characters and audio and all sorts of things?

And as @Jemil1992 pointed out, how does Nintendo always miss almost every opportunity to milk their franchises in a creative way? Now that they are pulling a Disney with Super Nintendo World and all that. You know, instead of coming up with crazy pricing for below average online service expansions.

Re: Retro Studios Scrapped An "Open-World" Idea For Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

echoplex

Basically any Metroid is open world once you get all the power ups. Except for elevator scenes/loading screens, everything is interconnected. Something I actually didn't like in MP3 was the disconnection between different levels (just like Skyward Sword), even though it was cool to fly Samus's ship. I blame it on the Wii's power

edit : sorry, other users said it better before me
