There's been a lot of debate in the past few days around multiple topics that are important in the world of Nintendo. The corporate 'alliance' with DeNA will bring Nintendo brands to smartphone apps, services and - notably - games, while the former will also handle a lot of the dull-but-important infrastructure work on a 'Membership' programme to replace Club Nintendo. In a move likely planned to ease fears of Nintendo bailing from the hardware market, Nintendo President also announced that a new dedicated gaming platform - code named 'NX' - will be shown in 2016.
There have been plenty of discussions around all of this, while Nintendo and DeNA have also made a series of carefully calculated statements. The smart device reveal was ultimately the game changer, taking Nintendo from a position of vague goals and non-committal statements to a deliberated policy of tackling the sector 'aggressively'. Mario, Samus, Link and more will likely soon appear - legally and not in dodgy ROMs - on smartphones and tablets; the form of these experiences and which IP will initially be used is unknown, but the message is clear. No IP or franchise is ruled out.
With this in mind we've decided to run one of our customary series of Polls. We've all had time to digest and consider the three key announcements from this week, some more detailed than others, and we're keen to know what you think. Are you coming around to the idea of Nintendo games on smartphones? What do you make of DeNA's role in the new membership programme? Did the announcement of the 'NX' project assuage any fears you may hold?
We want to know what you think, so by all means share your votes and comments below.
Do you think Nintendo bringing its IP to smart devices is a good idea? (1,010 votes)
- Yes, it will allow Nintendo to generate revenue while focusing on its core business
- Yes, but I'm worried that it will distract Nintendo from its core business
- No, Nintendo should stick with its core business - gaming on smart devices isn't what the company is about
- I'm not sure at the moment

How do you feel about DeNA's involvement in Nintendo's new membership programme? (989 votes)
- I think it's a good thing - DeNA has experience of cross-platform development and can help Nintendo create something amazing
- I think it's a bad move - Nintendo will be allowing an external company to influence one of the main channels of communication with its customers
- I'm really not sure either way, we need to see what form this programme takes
Please login to vote in this poll.
What are your feelings about the Nintendo NX? (999 votes)
- I'm incredibly excited about Nintendo's new hardware, and can't wait to find out more
- I'm keen to know more, but feel that Nintendo might have damaged the Wii U's chances by confirming it now
- After the Wii U, I'm not sure I'll be supporting Nintendo's domestic systems from this point forward
- Until we hear more than just a codename, there's nothing to get excited about

I have a hard time being excited about the NX. We simply don't know anything, we don't know what the market will look like, and we don't know what games are yet to come, properties are yet to be hits, or the situation with console and portable gaming in general.
If you want me excited, tell me the regular N3DS is coming to North America.
At first I was a little worried about the DeNA thing but after I've heard more about it I don't think It's that bad of an idea. I'm excited to hear more. Maybe if Nintendo makes a smartphone game I'll have something decent to play in short doses between classes if I forget my 3DS or the battery is dead.
The less we know, the more we speculate. So I will patiently wait for more information and I will keep getting Wii U and 3DS games.
I wish Nintendo the best, because I want the best from Nintendo. I also hope DeNA is the right company for this alliance.
I want to be excited, but we still don't know much about it. I have read a bit about the subject, but I would like someone to confirm if this is actually going to be a physical phone/portable device, or that Nintendo will start making their classic games for iOS and Android, etc..
I'm excited about what's NeXt. Will it be the Nintendo 3DX? Or the Nintendo Wii X? I just hope it'll be graphically capable and be 3rd-party friendly. Regarding DeNA, let's see what they can bring to complement Nintendo.

Also, as long as Iwata is in charge I don't think Nintendo will ever try appealing to hardcore gamers, and the NX will reflect that. Iwata's entire business strategy seems to be "let's try everything except appealing to mainstream/hardcore gamers".
I am not sure that I am happy that there is the possibility of the Wii U being replaced after only four years, and it doesn't make sense to already be talking about replacing the N3DS. More information is needed either way.
Its hard to comment since we currently know nothing concert. I think we might be setting ourselves up for q fall with this hybrid talk. There was 1 rumour but seeing as that claimed it used HVD's which are for achieving. There has been action suggesting a hybrid (merging hanheld and home teams) but that could also just to make a vita/ps3crods buy style set up
@Vineleaf I agree. I can't really get excited for the NX because it could be a successor to the Wii U meaning the Wii U would be dead after 4 years. If it's a new portable that something to get excited about but I highly doubt that will happen as the New 3DS was just released. RIGHT NOW I'm not really that excited for NX but that could possibly change when more information is revealed.
As for mobile Nintendo games, I don't believe it'll effect the Wii U market, however, it could have a small effect the 3DS market. I don't think it'll be that big of an effect though as Nintendo will probably release free-to-play games or maybe some classic games which work better on phones/tablets anyway. I don't find myself turning on my 3DS everyday but I do find myself playing games on my iPhone such as Clash of Clans or PvZ2 everyday.
As for the DeNA partnership, I think overall it's pretty good and will help Nintendo to start into the mobile space. Anything they do with a membership program should be good since Club Nintendo was pretty lame near the end of its life.
@DarkKirby The Wii seemed to do pretty well for not targeting the hardcore gamers.
I'm ALWAYS excited about new Nintendo hardware. I'm nervous about it, sure, but I'm way more excited than nervous.
@Darknyht its going to unvailed next year and if Nintendo's history is anything to go by, it'll release 2017. Making the WiiU 5 years old. Same age both the Wii and GameCube was
I don't know what to think about at this point.....should I be excited about the fact that Nintendo is making with the times or should I be negative about this sudden change?
I'm cautiously optimistic about the deal. Hopefully the DeNA partnership will improve Nintendo's archaic online/digital presence and will add, rather than, distract from the business as a whole (ie move away from club nintendo, maybe implement a Nintendo ID system where I can DOWNLOAD GAMES I ALREADY PAID FOR WHENEVER I WANT ON ANY CONSOLE I LEGALLY PURCHASED).
Also I think the Wii U and 3DS deserve longer life spans. I mean look at 360 and PS3, they're still kicking and, just like their successors, those systems are practically the same (give or take the few exclusives for each).
I think what we are going to see is basically a tablet with a controller dock, pretty much like the forthcoming Gamevice for the Ipad Air & Mini as it is widly known that the home and portable divisions have been merged.
I think now project NX is out in the open, Star Fox, Zelda, Xenoblade & Yoshi will be the Wii U's last hurrah.
It could also have an impact on the N3DS, as who will buy one of these if we are going to see new hardware in 2016/ 17?
But with this new approach a new account system will be needed and I wonder if digital titles from the 3DS and Wii U will crossover.
Can't remember the last time I was filled with this much NOPE!, but I think it was when E.T. was released.
I only recently got a Wii U so even if we did know more about NX I don't think I could bring myself to be excited about it.
As for this whole mobile issue, I'm a little wary about it but I don't think it'll be as bad or dramatic as some people are making it out to be.
@DarkKirby That market is likely gone for good. Multiplats won't get them back - they can get those games on the Xbox/PlayStation already, so there's no need to switch to Nintendo. They'll look to see what's not available on their platform. Nintendo's games obviously aren't doing anything, and 3rd party exclusives will likely just piss these people off.
Also, when the NX releases, those people are likely to say "I'll just wait a year or two for the PS5 and XB2 that'll blow this system out of the water".
Nintendo will forever be stuck in that cycle until they decide to actually drag out a system's lifespan to around the release of Sony and Microsoft's systems and matches them.
I can't stand touch controls for phones and tablets. Unless the console and phone/tablet games are 100% identical and have a cross buy feature, I will not be partaking in it. Also, when Nintendo (Sony and MS as well) go all digital, I'm done with gaming. There are VERY few digital games I have ever purchased and have no interest in it in the future. Physical copies or no copies for me.
I'm hoping the mobile revenue gets put back into developing amazing console games and really think it can benefit them.As for the NX im hoping for 2 things
1:nintendo increase their 2nd party studios or increase the workload of those they have. They need to work on the assumption they'll get little 3rd party support so that if they don't they'll be prepared and have games ready between the first party offerings.
2:they continue to promote indie games on the eshop. It only seems fair to me there's a few teams that have been more than happy to bring their games to the wii u even if NX does get 3rd party support nintendo shoul stick by the indies that have stuck by them during the wii u.
@DarkKirby That was some good satire there.
Going into the mobile market is bad, it's already flooded. Plus it's a different type of people that primarily play on those compared to pc/consoles/handhelds, so think it's bad that Nintendo distracts themselves trying to please them.
Should focus more on their core instead of trying to win back the casual crowd from the Wii era.
On the other hand, a common platform for the home/handheld devices is something I have high hopes for. They should have had it in place for WiiU/3DS but failed on that. Expanding their Internet part is also a must, their decision to remove the friends messaging system on 3ds was several steps back...
I will say that I'm cautiously optimistic. New things always bring about fears of the unknown, and lack of information doesn't help those feelings. But realizing that Nintendo is getting beaten by themselves time and time again for not moving into the modern/future technological age on all it's fronts is a bit discerning. That's why I have optimism that this will only help Nintendo, and unless Nintendo completely loses its mind, I don't see this move as a move that will dilute the company and completely tank it... Nintendo is not THAT stupid. Poor choices, sure, but stupid, no, they haven't been around this long for nothing.
I'm still not sure what to think.
I'm interested in the NX platform, but there are just so many red flags being thrown up about it.
First, what the hell is it?
Second, Nintendo clearly cannot support two systems by themselves, so how is adding a third going to fix things?
Third, it'll most likely be launching when the XBO and PS4 are at their absolute strongest, which means no one will care about it.
Fourth, besides MS and Sony being at their strongest, history has not looked kindly on mid-gen console releases or stop-gaps, and that is exactly how the NX will be perceived.
Fifth, Nintendo is clearly uninterested in repairing the Wii U, and now we know that over the next two years, new games for the 3DS and Wii U will become even fewer and farther between as Nintendo recoups resources for NX development.
Sixth, Nintendo needs to be repairing relationships with 3rd parties now, with the Wii U and 3DS--instead, it looks like they're running away.
Seventh, this feels quite like the reveal of the DS--initially a "third pillar" that was actually intended to be a replacement for the Game Boy line. What is NX supposed to replace?
Eighth, merely having this new console announced will stall the already lackluster Wii U sales.
Those are a few of my concerns. What are the odds any of them will be addressed?
I'm definitely not saying this WILL happen, but there's a chance Nintendo could see how much money those mobile games make and be like... we need to focus even MORE on these. You don't get to be as big as Nintendo by being nice. They don't make games because they love us, they make games because it earns them money. I think it's highly unlikely they'll see these mobile games pulling in crazy profits and then go... now let's just throw all that away on making games for the Wii U and 3DS that will probably not even turn a profit. And they ARE going to make a lot of money. Just look at Sega. The money they make off a handful of mobile games dwarfs anything else, and now they're ramping that up and scaling back on consoles and handhelds.
Until we know more it is not worth getting exited or upset about it and I think nintendo will support the wii u with games next year as well after that I'm not so sure
@Peach64
If Nintendo finds profits on mobile, I fully expect them to spend more time developing there.
I feel that the NX will be to here to earlier when I think that the WiiU just begin to have little success. It seems that the console didn't bring the anticipation we had especially on the slowwwww virtual console again.
@Gelantious
Going with the mobile market with hundreds of millions, if not billion, of users will help Nintendo brand awareness. Parents will just hand their kids tablets or phones to play with right now and won't bother buying them dedicated gsme consoles. Now if Nintendo could pull these parents or kids into buying NX then it's awin win.
I'm pretty neutral about this at the moment, though if we get more info about the NX in the future then my opinion might change.
I'm still not entirely sure how all of this will pan out. However, just as Iwata said (using corporate doublespeak to reduce negative impact), confirmation of the NX is centered around the flagging sales of the Wii U. It might not have been portrayed as painfully obviously as Bernie Stolar's infamous proclamation that "the Saturn is not in Sega's future", but I wouldn't be surprised if this has a "chilling effect" of sorts on future prospects for third parties on the Wii U, all the same.
I've already described elsewhere my thoughts on how I think there is inevitably going to be a conflict between Nintendo's traditional methodologies and DeNA's more "modern" methodologies. It's tempting to believe the two companies will be symbiotic, resulting in only gains for both companies. However, anyone who is familiar with these sorts of partnerships knows that critical differences of philosophy on direction will occur between two differently operating companies, sooner or later.
Not to mention, DeNA foretold in their own documents that they will be taking a leadership role on future mobile titles, and on the future online infrastructure; which will reportedly be implemented for the Wii U and 3DS this Autumn, and for the NX when it is released. Nintendo will not hold full responsibility or control over these aspects, since they are handing part of the reigns over, as implied by the words of DeNA's own documents.
@outburst
What about Nintendo xtreme
I think the "NX" could do for Nintendo what the iPhone did for Apple. I think this could push traditional business in a Big and good way. I imagine free to play games will likely have some Nintendo advertising. I'm excited and I think the Big N is about to take off in a way we've never seen. They have the entire gaming worlds attention because everyone is afraid of how it will be, but deep down we all know it will be a Giant. It's all speculation, but we know it's true.
So far 45% of people on this site are TOO STUPID to see what a fantastic opportunity this is for Nintendo. 45% of gamers would rather see the company fail - Nintendo have always been risk takers - moving into home console in the crash was the biggest risk they will ever take. It seems Nintendo's young fans are less enthused and more cautious.
I have a feeling Nintendo have set themselves up to be the biggest gaming company in the world bar none. Nintendo platforms have always been a cost barrier and Nintendo are excellent at tailoring towards a platforms specific requirements.
Looking forward to Nintendo smartphone games - Nintendo and Mario are recognized by everyone in the world - how can a Mario game on Android/iPhone NOT sell? Nintendo's brand recognition is instantaneous - people associate Nintendo with the best games, their games will floor the sales of Angry Birds and the lazily made ilk on smart phones.
It is impossible for Nintendo games not to become multi billion pound sellers on smart devices overnight.
Nintendo has finally regained it's footing. Congrats Iwata and co for securing Nintendo for the next 125 years.
I would also love to see Nintendo and Sony join forces. They are my two favourite brands.
@liveswired All of that assuming Nintendo and DeNA can overcome any possible conflicts of interest between the two of them, as will inevitably occur sooner or later. (Unless a compromise is reached, which will result in products nothing akin to what we're familiar with.)
There is no guarantee DeNA won't suddenly try to bite off more than they can chew, given that they will hold direction over the mobile products of, as you call them, "the biggest gaming company in the world." Every opportunity of this size has a similarly appropriate cost... It remains to be seen whether that cost will be too great to bear.
It all seems like Iwata's way to have his cake and eat it too. In the press conference, he makes a point of saying that the deal with DeNA doesn't contradict any comments he'd made publicly regarding Nintendo's strategic direction. Iwata keeps assuring that Nintendo is a hardware company but I think Nintendo's reaction to the market failure of the Wii U, that is produce a tonne of first party content, just obscures that message. The announcement of the NX of itself just isn't that interesting (to me). Nintendo are a 'hardware' company, of course they have a next console they're kicking ideas around for - it's what they do! With the announcement of the NX, Iwata can solidify his claim that Nintendo are in fact a hardware company and with the DeNA deal, finally give a decent response to all those investors who keep asking why Nintendo hasn't entered the smart device market yet.
@Hordak I'm this way still for consoles, just cause memory is limited and expanding it can be a pain. But I've gone all digital on my 3ds and I love it. Expanding was cheap and now I have tons of space and I can take all my games with me wherever I go.
@liveswired I too think they have an advantage because theyr're so good at tailoring games to hardware. That being said I have a hard time thinking I'd ever game significantly on my phone if only cause games suck the battery to a point where I risk not making it though the day.
"I'm keen to know more, but feel that Nintendo might have damaged the Wii U's chances by confirming it now" Lol, what? The Wii U was already damaged as soon as release, lack of support means lack of sales. The Wii U was bust from day one. Even to this day some people still think it's a Wii peripheral. They've released most of their trump cards and they've not helped.
It's being lowered into its grave as we speak, Nintendo need a new console... and soon.
Pretty sure Nintendo is the only company that bothers to say they're announcing a new console, and then announces nothing.
"We're working on a new piece of hardware" - Well of course you are, why the hell wouldn't you be? Honestly, saying the opposite would have been the real news.
"It's currently code named NX, and that's all we have to say" - Why even bother making the announcement? We know nothing about it. People know literally nothing new.
Also, why even bother having a poll when every answer is loaded with one specific opinion?
I still think there's nothing to be excited or disappointed about yet. This will obviously change once more details are released, but right now that's what it is to me.
I'm glad we finally had the poll, now we need a new Nitneod Direct early next week so we can move on to talking about games on Nintendo hardware again.
I'm fine w/ app games, when we actually have games to talk about, I'll be ready to read about them, comment on them, and play them, but until we have some actual games Nitneod needs to get Mario Maker, Yohi's Wooly World, Splatoon and Starfox out to market. And then announce some new games at E3.
I am excited about it all the mobile games and the NX. Nintendo isn't in need of money, that is they are in the black and have a stock pile that according to Forbes would keep them churning for atleast a decade even if they were losing 200 million a year. I think it's a realization by the company that times are in deed changing and they need to do something to secure a long-term future for Nintendo. I love my 3DS and Wii U, in fact I have two Wii U's that is how much I love the system but it bothers me little that potentially at the end of next year a new system could replace either one or both of the ones I love. Like cell phones that consumers on average buy every 18 months we might have to get use to a new console every 3-4 years. But hey there are plenty of titles on the Wii U to keep it alive in kicking after the NX comes out, that is if it replaces the Wii U. I love Nintendo games so as long as they keep being put out at the quality they currently are I find nothing wrong with Nintendo's recent decisions. By the way Code Name STEAM is awesome!
Give me a regular controller and I will be excited about the NX. I'm sick of gimmicks (motion, touchscreen, 3D).
I hate mobile games, so not very supportive of that particular move. On the NX end, yeah it's exciting, but I really hope we don't get it until 2017. I'd like to get another 2 years out of my Wii U, and with games like Splatoon, Mario Maker, Xenoblade X, and Zelda U on the way, I've got too much to focus on before I even think about buying a new console.
@abe_hikura Still not good for them to be replacing at this point. When your competitors' systems are lasting double the lifespan as yours it makes you look bad. Doesn't matter that if Nintendo sells cheaper, a home console is still a major investment and the now standard expectation is 8-10 years.
Good job on stocking the gold Mario amiibo nintendo! I saw some damn scalpers on eBay selling 6 for $50 each! Definitely switching to xbox where im sure Mario games will be on once nintendo consoles stop being made due to idiots that run it!
...Yeah, maybe we should wait for more info on everything.
@Priceless_Spork
Digital or physical, your activity is being tracked anyway so as long as you have an account (be it PSN, XBL or NN) the bigger issue with an all digital future is ownership, really...
Why be incredibly excited for something I know nothing about? After thinking about it, mobile gaming for Nintendo could be good.
I don't think the move into smartphones is smart for Nintendo's hardware sector, tbh. The deal with DeNa might be good for an account-based system, so I'm good there. NX, we just don't know enough about to get too excited, I'm hopeful, but I still can't say either way if I'm excited or not.
Must admit I voted that Im excited about the NX. More than likely I'll buy it, Ive owned everything Nintendo including the Virtualboy. But I am nervous it will just be another gimmicky unpowered system. Cant wait for e3 this year. Want to see if there will be any games coming for the wiiu or if Zelda is it.
@Priceless_Spork
If all you buy are physical games, you're missing out on tons of great titles and experiences. More games are released digitally than physically these days--especially on Nintendo systems, which have almost no new retail games lately.
You can choose to stop gaming because of this if you want, but it comes off as kind of petty. I also prefer physical but more than that, I just prefer having video games.
Your comment basically equates to "I'm not watching any movies unless they're in a theater. No theater, no see." That's a deliberate choice--yours to make--but deliberate none-the-less to simply not have as much to play or enjoy.
If you think your action is going to prevent the industry from moving more digital, you'd be sadly mistaken. They make more money on digital already. Change is already underway.
I think this is going to be a very interesting next few years to watch unfold for Nintendo. A very telling few years as well. Never before have I had so many unanswered questions with the future of of Nintendo. Its both exciting and a bit scary.
How will Nintendo treat the Wii U / N3DS from here on out?
What's in store with the new Membership Program?
The future of Nintendo entering the smartphone market?
Countless questions on NX?
Will Nintendo finally get in touch and connect with core fans?
Will the E-shop finally step up its classic gaming (n64,gc,etc)?
The future of Amiibos/cards?
Will Nintendo overcome its marketing woos?
Will Nintendo attempt to avoid previous failures with reaching supply demand in the West? Or is this going to become a broken record on Nintendo failing to deliver?
The list can go on and on. On one hand I'm very concerned. As much as I've loved the products released on both the Wii U and 3ds, I keep seeing a growing disconnect through Nintendo and their fans. I feel like I keep getting let down over and over.. But I'll hold faith since I've been with them since their console beginnings and look at this as an opportunity for Nintendo to really turn things around and make a glorious leap in the right direction!
I remain cautiously neutral. Getting my hopes up will just get me shot down like it always does, but complaining will likely make me look back at myself and say "wow, what an idiot" like it always does.
@PlywoodStick
It may also have a chilling effect for third parties on the NX. This pretty much confirms my long-held analysis that the Wii U is Nintendo's Saturn. The sad part is that if Nintendo does indeed launch in 2016 or 2017, they will be seen as nothing more than a mid-generation stop-gap, especially if they fail to make a platform powerful enough to be truly competitive.
They're either going to be late to the party to compete with MS and Sony, or they're going to be seen as a stop-gap. Without third parties to draw the attention of the wider non-Nintendo gamer demographics, the system is starting from a losing position. And the NX will truly be Nintendo's Dreamcast.
I'm cautiously optimistic. This could be the turning point for Nintendo if they get everything right. As long as Nintendo keeps making hardware, I'll be happy with them exploring the mobile space, maybe they'll actually develop mobile games I can get behind when it's inconvenient to whip out my dedicated handheld.
The thing that worries me, and I said this in an article the other day and that @Quorthon has touched on, is the timing of the NX. It's going fall halfway into Gen 8, which to be fair, will be the lifetime of of a typical Nintendo console, but the XB1 and PS4 will be hitting it's mid-season form. I'm excited nonetheless, but I'd just rather concentrate on getting what I can out of my Wii U and 3DS with so little info on pretty much everything concerning DeNA and the NX.
It's far to soon to say, next to nothing is known about what "it" is or what it's replacing.
The NX should be a smartphone 3ds & Wii U controller.
@Captain_Gonru - "baseless speculation"
More like bottomless, I feel like I'm drowning in it
Do you write that fan fiction? (You couldn't have picked those 2 shows by accident.) My wife's a big fan of both, I'm ok w/ Arrow, but Flash isn't working for me.
@Acein210 lol for once, I didn't have a problem getting a store exclusive amiibo. The Walmart I went to had six, sufficed to say I was pretty amped!
@rjejr woah, woah, woah. Stop right there. What's wrong with The Flash?
Please @Captain_Gonru, tell me more about this fan-fiction...
I am sick and tired of people making more about an new advertising campaign that will earn a little money on the side.Remember mobile equals more console fans.So far this is a good move.The NX is probably Nintendo's next handheld based on the time.People need to stop spouting that hybrid console/handheld gibberish though.
@Wearecreation Ha,ha! Nice joke.What alternate dimension do you life in for that to happen?
@NandN3ds it's all speculation. And folks like to speculate. The hybrid thought is no more gibberish than saying the next hardware will be a handheld, being none of us know anything right now (though a handheld is more likely to be correct)...
@DarkKirby
You can't really say that. I consider myself a hardcore gamer but I revel in Nintendo. I'd say at least 80% of all decent games released today is by Nintendo. I like Nintendo because of the quality. The fact that a game is 'mature', does not make it a 'hardcore gamers' game. Additionally, 3rd party support is dry on nintendo products because they run a different code and programming script to Sony and Msoft. Theirs are very similar and very simple, making games cheap and easy to produce for both consoles simultaneously. I feel Nintendo appeals to hardcore gamers much more than other companies do who seem to appeal more to mature gamers. I'm not saying there aren't other decent companies out there (I'm a big fan of Konami and SquareEnix).
I think the real question is how do we define what a hardcore gamer is. And surely that's a matter of opinion?
@Quorthon Which platforms do they make it competitive with? See, making it competitive with the PS4/XB1 is a horrible idea. Needs to be competitive with those systems' successors. Problem is, if they're releasing any earlier than 2018/2019, then Nintendo won't know what the competitors are doing and it will ultimately be underpowered yet again. On the other hand, there's no way they can keep Wii U on the market that long.
I think the question is, will people care about the system even if it did have the PS5's guts? Even if Nintendo makes every right move, will people care?
@LavaTwilight I agree. "Hardcore gamers" is mostly a meaningless term.
I envy those who say they trust nintendo to get things right and take whatever Iwata says as gospel. I grew up under Nixon, ergo I don't trust anyone. Politicians and corporate spokespersons will say whatever they feel the audience wants/needs to hear.
How many pillars can ninty sustain? Will stockholders be willing to continue support for those pillars that are raking in less $? All these years later and they cannot get online right!
I have supported Nintendo since the NES. I will wait and see what they do, but I've been less than encouraged since their talk about QoL and now this latest. How diluted can they make their gaming divisions, both hardware and software?
I feel they are coming across as desperate and throwing darts at a dartboard.
Nintento needs to do this if they want to stay in the game. I love my Nintendo consoles and handhelds, and do not want to play Zelda on ps4...as long as Nintendo can do a apple kind of thing with iPad/phones/pods being prettying the same, but for Nintendo with a console and handheld great. If all we get us mario bros3 on iPhone i will be dissapointed. Looks at all the mini games on the ds n64 mario cart. Games like that would be great for iPhone. Even tipping stars screams iPad... No matter what, I'd rather just have a 3ds that I can make calls/texts on that also gets games like the new Zelda.

I think they had to release info on NX to adress fears that they were going Sega with the announcement about dena. The thing that sucks is it hurts enthusiasm for the WiiU. If Nintendo burns WiiU owners prematurely killiing off WiiU with it's current small library of games before it's time I think it will hurt nintendo for a long time with it's fanbase. There are some heavy hitters coming(Zelda, Starfox, X)....but there needs to be a more rounded library before the next system comes, and they don't need to be half-hearted efforts. They better do a direct soon touting some good stuff for WiiU or they will will further squash interest in WiiU and hurt sales of future titles already lined up for the WiiU. We supported them and were patient only to have the rug pulled out from under us. Fix it Ninty.
Nintendo going mobile is a smart business move, and bound to print money for them.
The idea for an IOS/Android software platform that makes it easier to port their games across multiple hardware devices is also smart and logical. This is not 'NX', though; 'NX' is the codename of the next console hardware, at least that's what it sounds like.
Regarding NX, if it is a new home console, it had better be as or more powerful than PS4, and encourage developers and 3rd party publishers to develop and bring games to it, day 1 with the rival systems. It needs to be designed by westerners as well, similar to how PS4 was designed by Mark Cerny. It has to have PC-like architecture and be super easy to develop for and port to.
@Vineleaf Really? I thought that was pretty poor, after all 'Hardcore gamers' are proportional to 'Mainstream gaming' like Captain Ahab is to Greenpeace.
Overall, I'm pretty enthusiastic as to what the future will hold for Nintendo. Their partnership with DeNA makes me all the less nervous.
@andrea987 Conceptually good satire. The writing could have been a lot tighter. Word choice did give it away.
Edited those two fragments into one.
I think I might be the only person who answered: "After the Wii U, I'm not sure I'll be supporting Nintendo's domestic systems from this point forward." XD
@Vineleaf Right, I'm with you now.
Mobile games suck and after the Wii U, im cautious about Nintendo's next system.
I like that the NX hasn't been referred to as a handheld or home console. Makes me think they could actually be doing the 2 in 1 system. Nintendo can hardly support more than one system at a time as is, so I think it's the right choice.
Why is Nintendo life so quick to call NX a successor to Wii U. I think NX will be new dedicated handheld and the follow up to the 3DS.
@IceClimbers You make a darn good point. Out of all my friends I'm the only one that still own's current Nintendo hardware. When the wii released most everyone I know jumped ship.Their explanations always went back to third party support and lack of party chat. If they couldn't get games like final fantasy, elder scrolls,cod or Mortal kombat&street fighter they just didn't care.
@Vineleaf Who cares about NA? Live with the XL, or if you want so much a standard N3DS import it and the games from Europe. Case solved.
@Sir_JBizzle You're so lucky! My pre-order is still in the mail. Good luck to all the amiibo hunters out there!
@sarkwalvein Thank you so easily managing my preferences.
@Vineleaf My pleasure, actually the standard N3DS feels pretty neat. We have lot of them here in shops in Europe. You are welcome to import
I think there's uncertainty in everything: Mobile gaming may become too crowded and good games could be lost in the sea of cruddy clones.
But Nintendo is known for quality.
The AAA $60 model could become unprofitable with rising production costs.
But Nintendo is very budget conscious.
The middle ground could be eroded between value and flash graphics.
And that's why Nintendo had to do something, and at least if they fail on Mobile they won't bankrupt the company. It's scary, but probably necessary.
Yo, in all honesty, I'm not a Nintendo fan because of Nintendo. I'm a Nintendo fan because of the franchises they own and publish i.e. Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong...etc.. So I couldn't care much about what they do next or what they do in the near future, what they're planning and in which direction they're going, as long as I get my beloved games
If a certain business move means more Mario and Zelda games for me (albeit without a quality drop), then power to them.
@KyleJ39 you managed to get a pre-order. You my friend, are the the lucky one. Funny thing, it was 830am when I got mine, and apparently they had been sitting out since midnight. Makes me wonder if people cared about them in the first place, at least in my area.
Now I await my Toad in the mail!
Best case scenario: Just some simple apps and games on the mobile devices to attract people to the Wii u and 3DS (and their succesors). NX being a proper new handheld/home-console.
Worst case scenario: Nintendo dumping all their games on mobile-devices, going all out on the micro-transactions. NX being a mobile/tablet-like device. Everything download only.
That's how I feel at the moment...
"Why is Nintendo life so quick to call NX a successor to Wii U. I think NX will be new dedicated handheld and the follow up to the 3DS"
Thats certainly possible. Or its a handheld and home-console in one. Either way, I fear there is some DeNa/mobile malarky involved (though its hard to imagine they go for a tablet after the Wii u failure). Could be mobile-like though. I fear everything will be download only. I did predict that before, and now with the DeNa announcement it has become even more likely. But we'll see.
@ottorocket99 I never got the problem with the Wii U gamepad. Its a controller with a screen on it. It has all the buttons that any other controller has and can play all the games a normal controller can.
Outside of the touch screen, there is really nothing gimmicky about it. I guess my point is this, while I do use a Pro Controller for certain games(mostly fighting games), I can use the Gamepad for pretty much any game on the Wii U and enjoy myself.
In fact, I tend to prefer Wii Multiplats over their counterparts on other platforms for this very reason. I can play my games while someone else is watching TV or playing another system.
I'll admit, the Wii U concept could have been intergrated better. But why does everyone hate the Gamepad so much and act like its a gimmick? It's a controller with the added convenience of having its own screen.
The idea has potental. Why do we need to run back to the same controllers and ideas from years ago?
However it may sound a bit hypocritical, but even if I am against the mobile endevour, I still hope interesting mobile Nintendo games (if they will happen) will also be available on the NX (and I think they will). I don't have a mobile, yet want to experience those games (IF they are good and IF they are no micro-transaction hell).
So far, we know absolutely nothing.
We can just wait and see how the mobile side of things unfold.
Also, why people in here takes the NX as the next console like if they are some sort of clarivoyant? It's more likely to be first the 3DS successsor given the timing (2016 showing, possible 2017 release), not to mention that might be the first of Nintendo systems who share architechture and OS between console and handheld form factors.
@Sir_JBizzle - Flash is too happy for me. That one moment when the funny guy realizes it isn't a game, that just b/c he gives them funny names real people are still dieing, well that moment hasn't happened for me on that show yet, it's still just funny, and I'm not a fan of funny. I just binged watched all 7 seasons of Sons of Anarchy. Game of Thrones is practically a comedy in comparison. Constantine is my favorite new show this year.
@Captain_Gonru - If they make your x-over I'll still watch it though
My last comment deleted. But, what I previously posted was that I don't really trust Nintendo anymore. They've been working on this DeNA relationship for 5 years, yet what have they done for Wii U? I feel as if they hoodwinked me into putting all this money into my Wii U. Loss of 3rd parties, loss of VC, zero advertising and a sparse release schedule makes me totally question what's going on. And I have no incentive to buy anything anymore Because of no rewards program. And that doesn't begin until the fall! That's ridiculous. And with the NX, I honestly don't care. I'll whip out my N64, and gamecube for the time being, and finish up my Steam backlog before I think about purchasing another Nintendo console.
@NandN3ds ...Unless the plan backfires, and ends up helping DeNA more than Nintendo, by keeping many people satisfied with just smartphone/tablet based Nintendo games... Which would bring into question the need for a direct successor to the 3DS, from an economic standpoint. Yes, Nintendo's portable consoles routinely outperform their home consoles, yet DeNA has already convinced Nintendo's executives to provide them with sufficient power to partially control Nintendo's future infrastructure. Who knows how much more ground DeNA could gain into Nintendo's operations?
@Captain_Gonru Nice! I'm with @rjejr, I'd watch it too! I've tried the whole fan-fiction thing, but I kind of suck writing other people's characters, or rather my creative juices doesn't flow as well, so I try to suck with my own (I write/draw comics with my sis) I have written some pretty good Power Rangers stuff however. Haha. BTW, great parallel with Nintendo and DC. (I hate the new Superman look too!)
As for Arrow, I personally didn't care that they took some creative liberties. It kind of makes it a better show for me. I just view this interpretation as an alternate dimension or "Earth" as they call it in DC lore.
@rjejr I actually get what you mean about The Flash. It was purposely written to be lighter than Arrow, but strip that away and the mandatory CW "teen angst" characterization, it's a good show at it's core. Though of you don't do funny, then you'll probably never like it. I've been meaning to check out Constantine, but I heard rumblings of it getting cancelled, so I just wiped out from my DVR.
@NintyMan Beck look at Hyrule Warriors. That was handled beautifully with Nintendo only hovering in the periphery of the project. That was great practice for this.
@Vineleaf Well said, especially the last line.
@sinalefa I very much so agree with you. Hopefully DeNA can pull off with what they set to do and that Nintendo will benefit.
@HawkeyeWii Still physical/portable device
@King_Boo I find it will be a very interesting move to take with two in one and I would be excited for them to pull it off. But with technical/graphical upgrades/increases and console plus handheld, imagine how expensive that will be together.
Half of the questions here assumed things that I don't think will be the case. Or made me answer in a way that I don't agree. I like the move to mobile but because it'll allow them to expand their audience not because of the revenue bit. At least that one's close! I like the new membership program but not because of DeNA, I like it because anything would have been better. And I think the NX is a portable but two of the four options talked about how it'll "damage" the Wii U.
So I'm going to mess up your poll here, sorry
What happened to the Nintendo Panasonic partnership?
@skywake To be fair, the NX announcement does hurt the Wii U because nobody knows what it is. The media keeps jumping to conclusions about it being a Wii U successor. Assumption is hurting it (and the 3DS for that matter).
I hope that Nintendo will market this idea better. The problem with the Wii U is they never really told us why we wanted it other than brand loyalty. Otherwise it was just a rather expensive hunk of plastic. I just want them to tell me why I should care. Otherwise, I think I'm done with Nintendo and I'm moving to PC platforming as it's more reliable in a million ways.
@outburst I have the same hopes, I just got really worried when they say "a new way to play" I am like, no new ways Lol
@Cyberbotv2 I think you're way of thinking is more wide spread than others would like to think. Nintendo is always "we want to innovate", but damn Nintendo, just make an achievement system, I don't need a stamp system?!?
Really irritated with Nintendo right now!!!
Iwata needs to go...
@Sir_JBizzle - Yeah, I liked Constantine, so I don't think ti's coming back either.
I havent seen any of the new Superman movies, though I didn't like the actor in Chuck and I don't like him in Arrow. I don't know what it is, it's like Brandon Routh went to the Keanu Reeves school of acting.
To rule out possible customer confusion, the new system should debut under the name Super Wii U Mii Cube Advance. In all seriousness, I'm hoping for a dedicated home system with a tablet/pad that's actually a portable gaming device as well. Kind of like a Wii U with a 3DS on a charging dock. That'd be sweet.
The reason I'm optimistic is because this essentially gives Nintendo a way to play to a larger market and one of their strengths which is to make smaller, high concept games with tons of charm and personality.
I think of games like Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Wario Ware, Pushmo, Dr Mario etc...These are the sort of games that aren't embraced as openly by the "hardcore" gamers, but are highly accessible to everyone.
Details are too vague on the NX for me to care about it at the moment, but I think that Nintendo can easily manage smart phone games and console games. Pokemon Shuffle was clearly designed for a smart phone and is well received if 1 million downloads are any indication. Toss that on a phone and get ad revenue, even if only 5% buy gems, that would be a nice payday for Nintendo.
@sleepinglion lol! I read that hearing lord helmet's voice.That's quite the name for a console!
With basically little to no information on any of these things, I don't think anything right now but we'll see. While the possibilities are endless, I remain highly skeptical of Iwata... I love Nintendo but can't stand Iwata.
If they need to release a new system so soon I'm okay with that. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth even before factoring in the games I haven't picked up yet from the Wii U.
As for the NX itself, that sure is one awesome placeholder name.
Well I'm very excited to learn more about the NX specifically its name.. They better have a long hard think about that.
Things I want to see:
-Unified account system
-Official Pokedex/Pokebank Phone app
-Backwards compatibility with the 3ds & (maybe) Wii U
-Keep Miiverse
-Better online
I'm very excited to see where Nintendo takes this :3 Seems like they're waking up again!
@sarkwalvein
You have a strange understanding of 'solved'
@outburst but parents won't by Nintendo hardware just because Nintendo games are on mobile. Parents will me more inclined not to buy Nintendo hardware.
I have already had a friend at work tell me she won't have to buy another Nintendo device ever again for her son as she has read Nintendo games would be on phones and tablets.
@Caryslan because some people like me just want to play games on a normal pad. The GamePad is too big, hurts my hands and Nintendo have not even shown us why it is such a great device.
Developers don't use it, no innovation so what's the point.
@Gelantious then maybe their core should buy incredible games like zombie u and bayonetta 2 because at the moment they don't appear to be doing that
@kobashi100
Except he won't find the "premium" experience he'll find in a dedicated Nintendo console. He'll find out later that his favorite Mario platformer or Pokemon RPG are only on the Nintendo hardware.
Ragarding the gamepad, you can always buy a pro controller if you don't like it. But most of us like it. It's convenient to use for browsing the web, eShop, map, inventory, etc. I like the gyro controls too over the R Stick for FPS aiming. Nintendo would be stupid not to include one on the Wii U. If a developer would utilize the gamepad, he's 100 sure every Wii U console has one so no risk of losing a possible buyer if he wish to utilize the gamepad features. One big mistake of Nintendo is not including a high capacity storage. Common users aren't inclined to buy an external hard disk. Let alone a Y cable to complicate things.
That's why Nintendo would never go full 3rd-party (as long as they have plenty of money/resources). They design their games on their hardware and vice versa. They aren't limited to what their hardware has to offer because they could modify the OS or the hardware as they see fit.
The Wii U isn't doing well not because of the gamepad. I think it's primarily because it isn't graphically superior by a huge margin against the X360 and PS3 when it was released so no point to jump or upgrade. Not to mention the Wii U naming which is confusing. And thirdly the architecture is different making it difficult to port games. The wii u succesor should be graphically superior by a huge margin than the PS4 and XOne, it should be easy to develop games, a sizeable hard drive and a good name if they want to win 3rd parties back.
i been shaking my head every time i hear about this because it could go so wrong and its getting so many hyped when i get the feeling that later everyone will be "this is what nintendo came up with? just why?" then the doom gloom will start again
I just think that nintendo needs to work on so many other things that we still need to see them do rather then making smartphone games which they are ok but eh i feel like the gaming industry is getting worse and the 3 companies are just trying to milk things left and right now on what ever they can
As long as they keep their traditional consoles I don't care what Nintendo do in the mobile area. Games like Dr Luigi should have been on mobile and pc platforms anyway so to me its a natural progression. I can even see games like Fire Emblem being perfect for these platforms as long as Nintendo also makes fully priced versions without the micro transactions for 3DS and WiiU - Let's hope they don't stuff it up!
Obviously we don't really know much but generally I'm pleased. It's obvious Nintendo were heading down a blind alley especially with their Home Console situation. It's heartening to see signs of long awaited change even with the undertone of admitting they can't compete in their core business. Of course we have to hope they play their cards right, and there's no guarantees of that.
@rjejr
Don't make Keanu sad again! Btw: John Wick is really good, even if I did have to watch a couple scenes thru my fingers, lol.
@Hordak
I feel the same! All digital is too much for me, can't beat a disc in a shiny case
@IceClimbers
It needs to be competitive to MS and Sony in general. The NX console needs to be ready to take on the PS5 and XB4.
If Nintendo releases the NX to just compete with the XBO and PS4--or pulls their latter-day usual crap of releasing a console that is only now catching up to them, it will be seen as utterly pointless to the gaming public--a late-gen catch-up. A stop-gap.
If NX releases with equivalent power to the XBO and PS4, then no one will care. It'll be a worse situation than the Wii U--which again, is the worst-selling game hardware since the Saturn from the Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Microsoft grouping (so the worst selling of the "successful" consoles).
The problem outside of hardware power is the public perception that Nintendo is simply irrelevant to modern gaming. When they release hardware that barely matches last or current-gen standards and have almost no third party support to back it up, irrelevant isn't just how they'll look, it's become who they are.
Why do people want Nintendo to be the same as Sony and Microsoft?
@PlywoodStick 1% of a company is pretty much nothing, and that equity doesn't change unless both parties agree. I doubt the partnership will result in DeNa making major decisions, rather it seems sometimes they will provide input on matters in online infrastructure, which is currently small. Once it grows, DeNa cannot get more influence without Nintendo's consent. I doubt that part of the equation undercuts Nintendo's hardware or other major operations. However, I do agree that Nintendo making smartphone games is a major problem for big N's hardware business.
@Ootfan98 Because Sony/MS provide them with experiences they didn't know they wanted, and just happened to be decent at implementing and marketing them. Nintendo's strategies are a bit more product-related rather than service-related, which apparently doesn't resonate since the firm doesn't advertize well enough to them.
@Captain_Gonru - "Brandon Routh was in Superman Returns, and now on Arrow. ... The guy on Chuck wasn't either of them"
He was the MAIN villain for an entire season, practically the entire run of the show even.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Shaw
@k8sMum - Sorry to pick on Keanu, I've always liked him, but I think I see in Brandon Routh what many other people see in Keanu's acting abilities.
@Captain_Gonru "Compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC one is more fragmented than the Zelda timeline"
No truer words have been spoken. Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred that they at least alluded to Batman existing, but the show-runners said as much that Batman doesn't exist in the Arrowverse, so they've written themselves into a corner. Then again, they said the Lazarus Pit didn't exist either, but there it is in some form the last episode. So there's that. Though the main problem is that with Batman rouges, some of them don't exist without the existence of Batman, though I suppose a case could be made for Ras.
The problem is with DC is the licensing of their IP on high. As it stands, Their TV and Movie universes are separate, so some characters fall on to the "no-no, you can't use that on your show" list. Batman and some of his characters are usually on that list unfortunately, Which is why Harley Quinn isn't on the Suicide Squad anymore and more disappointing, we're not getting the rumored Arrowverse show, because DC suddenly wants a movie. (Also I think Gotham has the TV rights to Batman characters, except Batman)
Disney/Marvel is much like Nintendo with their IP - very calculating, deliberate and careful with how how it's used. (see I can stay on topic too! Haha) It helps that they had a plan to connect everything from the start. DC is much like the Nintendo that's late to the party and scrambling to get everything together. Or the Nintendo that ever allowed "The Wand of Gamelon" I'm not knocking DC per se, because I love the characters, I'm just giving a parallel to the handling of their characters.
@Ootfan98 Nintendo's first party games with a decent online structure is a bad thing? Who wants party chat options and monthly deals and discounts. I certainly thought tomb raider remaster was a waste at thirteen bucks. Yeah, copying ms&sony would be the worst idea ever.
@Quorthon Oh I definitely agree with that.
The million dollar question is though, will it even work? Say Nintendo made all the right moves. Will people care?
@Vineleaf yes it's hard to get excited about two letters.
@Ootfan98
They shouldn't be exactly the same but fact of the matter is there are some things Sony and MS do better than Nintendo and Nintendo should match or better them on those things e.g.friends lists, online play, online Account Systems, digital discounts, Cross Buy
While I feel that the 3DS and the Wii U are too young for Nintendo to be talking about a 'possible' successor, I have some fears about what NX could be potentially. I am also worried about it being the 'third pillar' that has been brought up about the device a few times as that is what they called the DS before it was released and it ended up replacing the Game Boy line.
Its time for a big shake up at Nintendo and this is pretty big. Let's hope this is just what they needed. I would have probably just dropped the Wii-U bringing out remainder of announced games and focus'd in on the 3DS money machine. I know that's kind of cold but the Wii-U is really just floundering. I own one myself and hate to see it die so early. But does it really make sense to keep going with it. Zelda will sell some systems along with Xenoblade X. I was really hoping to get Dragon Quest X which I thought would also sell systems
@OdnetninAges
Fair enough And I like that your opinion didn't take a wall of text! Haha. I think it's still WAY to early for me too. Mobile gaming could taint Nintnedo games...or intelligently augment them...who knows at this point. I just don't want to pay to play like PSN and XBLIVE...I HATE THAT.
@IronMan28 In this beginning, the deal seems benign enough for now... However, the proof of DeNA's future level of involvement is in their own documents on their website for the release notes coverage on Nintendo. Since DeNA will be the ones in charge of actually managing and constructing the online infrastructure, with some requests based on joint design decisions by Nintendo's engineers, that is something that DeNA will indeed have a leadership role in. Nintendo may be commissioning their services, and will have a 10% outstanding stock in them in addition to other trades, but DeNA will ultimately make decisions which prioritize their own business outlook above that of Nintendo's. They will have the freedom to do so, because DeNA won't be an agent, subsidiary, or merged company, but a capital ally.
Once DeNA has gotten a greater foothold through their infrastructual services several years down the line, due to having bigger responsibilities that Nintendo will have only partial, not full control over, DeNA will acquire more influence by default, whether Nintendo's employees like it or not.
You're all such a bunch of zombies, those poll results are ridiculous,
@Souflee I answered not sure/not sure/damaged Wii U myself. I am leaning towards the capital alliance side of the equation perhaps providing a little too much breadth, though. I think Nintendo should have just commissioned DeNA for their infrastructural projects while maintaining full control, without entering into a capital alliance... although DeNA might not have accepted that kind of deal.
I wonder if Nintendo might a Nintendophone similar to this one?
http://www.concept-phones.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Nintendo-phone-concept.png
I don't like most mobile games but as long as Nintendo themselves focuses on console games and just keeps an eye on DeNA to make sure that they don't abuse their franchises it's fine.
Just thinking about the NX (or any new dedicated Nintendo hardware) has me drooling.
Excited for nx. Wii u games look great, can't wait for the future
@IceClimbers You see, it's things like this that make me not care about sales and whatnot.
If Nintendo DID do everything right, there'd still be entirely too many people that wouldn't buy the Nintendo console simply because it WASN'T a PlayStation or an Xbox.
At the end of the day, Nintendo's console is still considered "too kiddy" for the "hardcore" gamers. They'll also argue Nintendo's a rehash company because they constantly recycle Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and their other IPs even though they're likely to go out and buy GTAV, God of War III, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, and DmC AGAIN (the remasters from 7th gen).
I'll enjoy what I get. I'll enjoy my Nintendo games. If the NX seems worth it to me, I'll buy it. If not, I'll either wait until it is or get another console.
Can't wait to hear more information about the NX and the DeNA deal.
Glad the questions had a "wait and see" option to choose.
Nintendo is so obvious, I can not be the only person who understands their future business model.
1.DeNA and Nintendo partnership
i.The user will only need to have one account. With this account the user will access features for both the mobile game and Nintendo console.
ii. DeNA will control how the NX and mobile game interact online
*Instant Messaging from cellphone to NX or vice versa
*Any outcome on the mobile game will have an effect the connected NX game
*Special game modes that will only be accessible if you brought the mobile game
iii. Traditional online experience that is similar to XBox Live/PSN
2. Amiibo
i.Amiibos are NFC powered figurines that are an integral factor for bridging the gap between mobile devices to the NX
*Unlock special features on the mobile game with the Amiibos
*If user plays with an Amiibo in the mobile game, this could unlock special skins, power ups, maps that would transferred to NX game
*Your Amiibo stats could be increased playing specific mobile games
3. NX will utilize cloud gaming/ the cloud
i. Within this interview it was stated that N.E.R.D.s are researching the possibilities, that could be created combining cloud computing and a consoles GPU.
http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Iwata-Asks/Iwata-Asks-NERD/NERD/9-NERD-s-Goals-and-Dreams/9-NERD-s-Goals-and-Dreams-759323.html
ii. The NX will be a mixture of an iPhone/3DS/Wii
*Users could purchase data plans at mobile carriers for the NX
I. Could be possibly be sold in cell phone stores
*Portable gaming machine
*Energy efficient home console that will get its power boost through the cloud
For the most part, I'm confident that I covered the basic outline of Nintendo's new business strategy. Nintendo is not playing this upcoming generation. One more tidbit: I suspect that the Wii U was supposed to be the NX, or it could simply be a trail run for the NX.
@Vineleaf
And it's so far off too. It's hard to get excited for something that's still years away. And, let's be honest. Who here ACTUALLY didn't think Nintendo would have another console in the works, considering they've been releasing new hardware every 5 years for the past 30 years.
@easy2pls
Pretty good predictions, but I think you're way off on the NX resembling a phone or being sold in cell phone stores or having a data plan.
Whatever they do, the NX will be kept separate from any mobile games. there might be cross-functionality and all that jazz, but the NX will very much still be a traditional console (and by traditional, I mean no data plans and no cell phone integration)
I'm still not convinced the "NX" is a new console. Until they show the actual hardware, I'm not going to waste too much time trying to think of all the possibilities. It very well could be a development suite that just works across platforms, including Wii U and a new console. The new console might be something totally different.
But, if "NX" is a new console....KEEP THE "NX" NAME NINTENDO!!!
@RADencker I doubt they'd keep the NX name because "X" usually means "no" and has a negative connotation in Japan. It's used like that elsewhere too, but not to the extent that Japan does.
That's one of the things that cripples the Xbox in Japan. It's pretty much "No Box" there. The system's name tells them not to buy it.
X also often means "cross" there too though, but is usually explicitly stated that it's used that way (like in XCX, which is called Xenoblade X in Japan, pronounced as Xenoblade Cross)
If the thing is a hybrid, NX becoming Nintendo Xover is possible. As long as they ditch the Wii moniker, I honestly don't care too much about the name.
Nintendo Next would be a cool name though. Or maybe Nintendo Xtreme (I can feel the 90's in that name )
Is there anyone who was actually worried about the DeNA deal or is this just media hype to stir the pot? Isn't this what stock holders have been demanding for the last few years now? The rise in stock price certainly doesn't point to a lack of confidence.
OMG enough of this 'Nintendo Next' please, it sounds ****.
NX is at least 3 years off. Wii U will have a semi-normal console life cycle.
Can't wait to see what bat-s*it crazy nintendoid mobile games the big N is gonna dish out to us. Hoping to finally have something good to play on the sh*tter instead of frickin' Angry Birds
@liveswired your mom. Since we were insulting people I wanted in! I just want to be one of the cool kids.... Also, Nintendo and Sony did team up, that's why we have the Sony Playstation...
@rjejr in the states the rumors were that he'd be back on SyFy or something like that! That was a fun show,
@dariusq rise in stock? After quite a few years of stagnation? Sounds like it's time to sell! LOL!
None of these announcements are about actual games, or ideas that will makes games more interesting, so I don't really care.
@Kaze_Memaryu For the 2600 ?
@unrandomsam Bingo (and yes, I know I'm not old enough to make that joke, but the comparison still stands).
@Captain_Gonru - You thought I confused laid back and loose fun loving Chuck w/ boring stiff stick up his butt Superman? Can't see that happening. I thought you meant I confused Routh w/ Matt Bomer's Bryce Larkin. Bomer's still a million times better actor but he had a similar look and roll back then.
@Platypus101 - Constantine? It would figure he'd be on Syfy since I don't get that channel I'm really hoping he's on CW, he'd fight right in w/ everything else on that channel, and Zed has the look. Supernatural has to end some day I would guess.
So, the reason why I am excited about the NX is because even though we don't know almost anything about it, it's Nintendo showing us that it is still progressing with its focus: video game consoles. A lot of people worry that the Wii U has damaged Nintendo to the point of jumping ship, but they say they actually have future projects for the inevitable 6-7 years it takes for a new console to hit the scene. That's what I can feel safe about as I look forward to more Wii U titles.
NintendoLife: Speculating Together, Today.
What "dust" has settled? Two ambiguous announcements? I get having initial reactions, but we know practically nothing.
WHEN IS THE NEXT DIRECT?? I WAITED TOO LONG ;(
@Artwark Follow your heart!
@gcunit And what exactly would you call it?
So 100 million phoners (?) get to play Pokémon Shuffle and Mario tipping stars. Good for them
@IceClimbers that is interesting, I didn't know that about "X". I also like Nintendo " Next" and "xtreme", but I wonder if they would be hurt by the " x" in those names. One name I really like is the fuzion name that was part of the rumor a couple months ago about their next console.
the DeNA thing is very cool, but a new console codenamed NX, no that's way too soon, they should be focusing on the Wii U!
@ottorocket99 I am sick of the "others approach" idea. Where is the fun in that? I liked the GameCube but one of the reasons It didn't catch on because they decided to take the "follow the competition" path. And it's not a gimmick if you have to use it!! A feature like S voice from Samsung now that is a gimmick because people never use it.
@Kaze_Memaryu I think you just dated yourself.
@Windy what is the matter with you? That is the worst idea I have heard ever. Nintendo would be stupid to drop the Wii U now. Again they are making PROFITS P-R-O-F-I-T-S. The sales may look bad but they are making money and that right now is important. What is wrong with people these days? All they care about is the sales. Seesh
@Nintendobro The "others approach" is why Sony is beating out x-box this gen. The PS3 got off to a slow start but Sony learned from their mistakes and produced a console that matched its rival with a quality online service.The consumer really benefits when services are improved because these companies are competing for your cash.I remember when Xbox deals where pretty lame until sony was giving away way better games on its ps plus service. I'm not saying this method would be sure fire for Nintendo as you mentioned the game cube, but it's not like xbl and psn haven't been great services over the last decade.
I honestly think they should just stick with software and leave the hardware to the big guys.
@RADencker The X wouldn't be a problem in "Next". As for "Xtreme", I'm not really sure. I doubt Xtreme is the name anyways.
"But, what I previously posted was that I don't really trust Nintendo anymore"
Nintendo did many things in a pretty short time we thought they would never do. They did day 1 dlc (Mario golf). They did free to play. They did micro-transactions. They even did 1 or 2 apps!
The thing is I could totally see Nintendo embracing micro-transaction hell, pissing all the old fans of in the process. Nintendo looooooooves easy money!
I am pretty cautious, but its to soon to go into panic-mode.
I think this is a good thing all around. Nintendo getting into the mobile market will have the effect of raising the quality of mobile games. They will set a higher standard for quality, challenging the entire industry to up their game to compete. More competition with better products is always good for the consumer! And I will buy every one of their mobile games... because I just love Nintendo that much!
@IceClimbers
Nintendo would need to not only make all the right moves, but also be able to do something they haven't done since the N64 analog stick--properly anticipate the future.
Could they be successful? Of course they could. But Nintendo has become ridiculously adept at taking one step forward, followed by two bumbling steps back.
The Wii could've been this. Had Nintendo built a modern profile system, Achievement system, online infrastructure, and had the console be on-par technologically as the X360 and PS3, they would've swept that generation. The Wii sold largely on the gimmick, but had they also given customers a (then) modern console in addition to that gimmick, they would've been unstoppable and the Wii would likely still be selling.
This is why "who won the generation" conversations are so complicated for the last generation. In any other generation, there was a clear winner in sales, multiplatform development, incorporating new concepts, leading in design, etc. For instance, the PS2 wasn't just the high seller, but standards created with it became industry standards, it had almost all multiplatform games, and it was the default platform for development with games being made there first and foremost and merely ported elsewhere. It also had by far the largest library. A clear winner of its generation--and it was the same for almost every generation before going back to the second (the first didn't have 3rd parties and lacked a lot of other elements common to us now).
Move to the next (previous, 7th) generation, and things get a little weird. The Wii led in sales, but it didn't maintain that lead or momentum--and sales was the only place it did lead. Almost everything else came from Microsoft, the Xbox 360 camp. The X360 controller is an industry-wide standard copied for PCs, other systems (like the Nvidia Shield), and even phones. The X360 was the default development platform for 3rd party games, with PC and PS3 generally receiving ports of what was made for the X360. The X360 created modern gamer profile standards with Achievements and an online infrastructure to support it and get the most out of it. The X360 also has the most games of the generation, ever so slightly edging out the PS3 and trouncing the Wii (with around 1000 more games than Nintendo's little "winner"). Hell, Microsoft also spearheaded indies on consoles and had their own game development engine--the now-dead XNA. In the end, the lead the Wii had gradually diminished, it died earlier than the X360 and PS3 (both of which were released ahead of the Wii, and both of which are still selling), and Nintendo offered nothing to keep customers playing or get them excited for the next platform. And when the Wii U did roll around, instead of streamlining, Nintendo attempted to reinvent the wheel at a time when they shouldn't have.
Nintendo briefly struck gold and garnered huge sales, but all for the gimmick of the new controls. Had they incorporated everything that made--those features that made the X360 so damn strong--the Wii would have sold closer to, or better than, the PS2 and the Wii U would likely be selling like the PS4.
Nintendo fans like to say "well nobody buys Nintendo for third party." Well, yes, traditionally, they have. I bought a DS, first and foremost, for Contra 4. I think this is just excusing failure--to the point of embracing it. It's like saying, "Nintendo sucks, but that's okay, because nobody buys Nintendo not to suck."
The Wii and Wii U have quite effectively proven that Nintendo's core franchises don't sell consoles. Microsoft and Sony have shown that consumers will always buy hardware for 3rd party games, so long as you A) give consumers a modern, competitive console and B) give developers modern, friendly tools. If the Wii could've handled the Unreal engine, and the online could've handled superior online experiences, then the console would have soared. Bioshock, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Bulletstorm, non-gimped Call of Duty, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Batman, GTA, Saints Row, etc. These would have been on the Wii if it not only had its sales, but also been powerful enough to handle the games without compromise.
Nintendo fans would actually then be fans of more of these games instead of outwardly hostile to so many of them, and regular gamers and consumers would have the confidence that Nintendo consoles are a great place to play everything.
Instead, the message is that Nintendo consoles aren't necessarily a great place to play anything unless you want boatloads of casual crap, or upwards of half a dozen pieces of software themed around just the Super Mario franchise and it's off-shoots.
Can they win with NX? They could, but I don't really see how they will simply because the management making poor decisions is still there. They make too many bafflingly bad, counter-productive decisions and still, still don't have any idea how to actually appeal to 3rd parties. And this is evident with Iwata's lazy "let's inspire them back" nonsense and his confusing "we want the Wii to be the console all developers want to work with." If that was true, it'd be able to handle Unreal 4.
As I said in a previous post, I think it's good. DeNA helping them with a backbone for their system, unified accounts that will no doubt help with the console business as well as tying into mobile and to help understand the mobile market, which is new to Nintendo. Nintendo will have a chance to release smaller games, with both their biggest franchises and potentially smaller, and drum up awareness and fandoms for both larger and smaller projects. That could, theoretically, lead to we console gamers seeing more of the smaller titles appear back on handheld and console as the potential for larger fandoms is increased via mobile marketing.
And you know Nintendo is going to start making use of second screen and additional meta-gaming via the phone for the larger console releases. Again, which should work better since DeNA is helping with the backbone.
Regardless of how much money they make from this, it still cheapens their brand and is ultimately a mistake in the long run.
I think the idea of mobile games is horrible. I couldn't believe the polls when I saw them. This move is just going to I hate to say this word but ruin the whole gaming experience. It will cause console games to cheapen to stay somewhat on par with their mobile games. Nintendo has boatloads of money. They have no need to do this at all.
