Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is an excellent strategy title for the 3DS, but it's really handicapped by the slowness of enemy turns. Waiting for your opponent to move their units is a real drag, and makes the game hard to enjoy to its fullest.
Thankfully, Nintendo is aware of this issue and during yesterday's Nintendo Direct confirmed that a software update was on the way which will allow players to speed up the enemy's turn. If you're on the standard 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS you'll be able to force your opponent to move twice as quickly, but if you're using a New Nintendo 3DS console, they will move at treble the speed.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. also uses amiibo figures to unlock special bonuses, but the lack of Marth amiibo has curtailed this element of the game for many fans. Thankfully, Nintendo confirmed that more Marth figures are coming to the market this year, so finding one shouldn't be as much of an issue.
Also confirmed was a public tournament in honour of Tom Sawyer called "Hijinks", which launches today and runs until April 5th.
Do you think this software update will enrich the game in your eyes? Are you going to be queuing up for your Marth amiibo? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Hope the EU version will be released as fully patched. My SD card is full!
Very good news - that was my biggest issue with the game.
But will we see more stock of Robin and Lucina?
It is nice to see that they are going to fix one of the major complaints about the game.
Everyone is so much better than me at this game. Playing the story mode - you feel good. Go online - and it is just robots kicking my ass. It feels like playing basketball against my dad at the age of 5.
I think Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is one of the best games I have played in a long time, and to be honest, not having the ability to speed up battles is really the only complaint I have with the game. Besides that, everything else is perfection in my eyes. A wonderful game.
How about more Toad and Super Mario line amiibo in Italy? I've never seen one in any stores. GameStop has them available on stores but it isn't displayed and for sale as they say they are 'preorders" to be picked up which is BS since it should be on sale a week after it isn't picked up by the one who preordered it.
Lincoln for Smash!
It was tolerable for me, simply because a lot of other strategy games "think" during enemy turns.
But I'm all for speeding things up. Definitely got no issues with that!
This has been the main negative aspect from this game, I think a lot of reviews should be updated after the patch.
@gsmaciel That could go down a very slippery slope; I can forgive one thing, maybe even more if the title's ambitious enough, but we don't need to be kind towards Battlefield 4 and whatnot.
This could help it with sales a lot. Many people cancelled preorders after the demo because the ai took so long. Nintend should advertise this patch so they get more sales.
While I'm no stranger to writing code, I'm not even going to front like I'm even halfway in the league of a game programmer or even understand the nuances of the discipline. However, I simply have to scratch my head and wonder if the length of enemy turns was really something that couldn't have been addressed before releasing the game... Perhaps they ran out of time? I don't know. Anyway, this should DEFINITELY help as it was the only thing I didn't like about the demo. I'll actually go purchase the retail version now.
Glad they're patching this. I hated staring at a wall for 2 minutes while the game twiddled its thumbs.
Although I'll enjoy this feature I don't agree with the opening paragraph. My enjoyment isn't determined by the enemy movement nor has it ever been. These type of game always do it but I guess it being more of a 3rd person view people aren't as excepting of it.
I cannot stress this enough. We should all be buying this game to support new IPs from Nintendo. Not only that, but the game is simply fantastic. It is a win-win.
I personally didn't mind waiting for the enemy, but since it was apparently all people talked about, I'm glad they listened and gave them what they wanted. Now we'll see if there's something else they want to complain about. Probably the art style, but they can't change that.
I'm sorry if I seem a little negative, but I just don't understand gamers sometimes.
@c1pher_c0mplet
Since the patch is coming so quickly, I have to imagine that it was an intentional choice. I believe the intent was that they wanted you to get sweaty palms while you were barely clinging to life. It's just a theory though.
@MoonKnight7
The game only has been released in the US right now- not in Japan or Europe. I guess NoA needed a game to release in February and decided they could patch it later on.
@scamander
That's fair, though it released just last month, not in February. I find it unlikely that it will be released in Japan, but I could be wrong.
Obviously if you live elsewhere there's nothing you can do. That said, all I've been hearing on other sites is complaints about it. So let me clarify in that this is directed at my fellow NA gamers.
I won't be using the speed up as i use the AI time to view as much of the map as i can so i can plan out my next move. Don't folks play chess?
Loving the game, and glad they're patching the main aspect that people complained about. I found the wait during enemy turns to be more and more tolerable as the game went on, but that's just me. I just cleared chapter 11 and was sent to a new land, so that's an interesting turn for the game. Can't say enough how much I love this game so far. And I haven't even scanned in my Fire Emblem amiibo yet
I kind of got used to the enemy's turn waiting. I just use the free time to space out or multitask. Still welcome the patch though.
Ensign Crusher "treble" speed ahead! =)
As someone who's put over 65hrs into Codename STEAM the length of the enemy turns was never serious enough to detract from my enjoyment of the game. Honestly, the enemies' turn only lasts about 30s-1min in actual time and only seems longer akin to waiting for a stop light to change or water to boil.
Just more Marth? What about more Ike?
Actually, what about more Amiibos!
Honestly, the enemy turn was not an issue for me. It felt like I was getting hints about enemy movement within the game's fog of war. I had bigger issues in this game. I was very excited for it but quit due to it being nothing more than a cheap version of Valkyria Chronicles, designed by someone who didn't understand what made VC great. Huge disappointment for me.
I own the game
I'm excited for the speedup
I'm torn. I'm to the part in the game where I can start using Amiibo. I don't have a Marth yet and I can't find Ike and part of me wants to keep playing while part of me wants to wait till I have Marth or Robyn.
Awesome. Nintendo listens to feedback after all.
I am surprised that 3 IS games appeared in the Direct. Guess they are pushing that studio to the spotlight.
Excellent!
@Ryu_Niiyama
That doesn't have that much to do with anything. You can take all the time you need since you don't use your steam until you make an action.
Will this change the review score?
@sweetiepiejonus Not if you are trying to see if a enemy is in the process of moving behind something. For me at least it keeps me from walking into an ambush.
"Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Update Will Speed Up Enemy Turns"
Good news!
@MoonKnight7 I agree. While I played thru the demo, waiting on the enemy's turn was a minor annoyance and that's all — it didn't deter my enjoyment of the game at all. It was a minor annoyance at worst (and a quirky "feature" at best). As fast as processor speeds are these days (even in non-bleeding edge tech like Nintendo's), waiting for opponents to move should totally be a thing of the long past.
I'm so glad this patch is encouraging more people to buy the game, because I think this game deserves to do well.
