The latest update for the 3DS has arrived, and it’s arguably one of the most exciting updates so far, enabling users to change and save up to 8 layouts of the HOME Menu with different theme and software icon arrangements, and also adding the anticipated amiibo support for older systems.
Below is the official changlog for 3DS system update version 9.6.0-24:
Changes to HOME Menu:
A Home Menu Layout setting has been added to HOME Menu Settings. Users can save and load up to 8 layouts of the HOME Menu with different theme and software icon arrangements
Changes to Theme Shop:
Additional categories have been added under “View More” for easier navigation of the Theme Shop
Improvements to system stability and usability:
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS Systems Only:
Changes to HOME Menu Settings
amiibo Settings has been added to HOME Menu Settings. amiibo Settings allows users to register an amiibo owner and nickname, delete data written to an amiibo by supported software, or reset an amiibo*
*This feature will require a peripheral device scheduled to launch in 2015
As noted, added amiibo support for older 3DS units will require a NFC Reader / Writer peripheral device scheduled to launch sometime in 2015.

The NFC Reader's release must be soon if the Amiibo settings have been added to the old models.
the hockey puck attachment should be fun.
Please, Nintendo, give me that NFC reader! My Pit and Samus Amiibos need to be trained! Well, mostly I just want to nickname them already. Pitato and Slamus. Heh.
Maybe there will be a Nintendo Direct soon to announce the NFC device, among other things?
The 3d is not super stable on my old 3ds xl, false advertising.
@Nintendian : Erm… they've "advertised" no such thing.
@Nintendian They're referring to system stability, which is often Nintendo speak for patching out software hacks.
I don't WANT you to sell me an external NFC device for my old 3DS, Nintendo of America.
I want you to sell me a standard-size New 3DS so, among a host of other reasons, I can use my amiibo without extra accessories.
@Crimzonlogic I think so.
@Kaboom I hear ya, pal. But don't hold your breath; I doubt Iwata's listening. I prefer the bigger New XLs (just like the former XLs) but portability could be nice... Who knows, they might do a surprise release of the New 3DS in North America like they all-of-a-sudden announced the 2DS last year. You never know with Nintendo.
You can never have a system that is too stable. LONG LIVE STABILITY UPDATES!
@pyrotek85 Yeah, I'd expect this update would remove the region free exploit mentioned a few days ago on this site.
This update also allows you to turn off wireless from the settings icon where you can visit the theme shop.
Well, that dispells the myth that the NFC reader was abandoned by Nintendo. My "New" 3DS is currently in limbo as my mom is holding it as an Easter Basket stuffer. I imagine the NFC reader might become a rare accessory in the future since Amiibo support was only implemented after the arrival of the new 3DS.
Another thing about the NFC reader... Maybe people could hack it to interface with a PC and use it to read/write/backup and otherwise tamper with Amiibo data.
@StarDust4Ever fairly sure i can do it with my Nexus 7 already
@abe_hikura most computers don't have built-in NFC readers.
3DS NFC reader news... one more thing to add to the inevitably close Nintendo Direct
No system is so stable:)
amiibo settings are now available for the non-New 3DS systems... It requires the external NFC reader, though. I wish the Wii U GamePad could also feature as a 3DS NFC reader.
Based on the update, I think it's safe to say the final design of the NFC reader is finalized. Therefore, the real device should be revealed soon in a Nintendo Direct. Bottom line, I think this is more evidence that a Nintendo Direct is closer than we think. But I'm not assuming anything...
Now please give us a Wii U update, Nintendo. Please. Thank you.
@SanderEvers Yeah I know, I just want to justify my wish of an incoming Direct. I'd be pretty disappointed if Mewtwo was released without a trailer for one.
I really hope they don't scrap the Amiibo puck for the old 3DS hand helds. This would be pretty stupid for all the people, who can't afford a New 3DS.
Won't be making use of the home menu layout as my home menu stays the same so I no where everything is. Plus I love the theme shuffle.
@sillygostly He's referring to the article title: "Super Stable 3DS Update"
Love me some good stability! Hopefully when the new Amiibo reading device releases it helps boost figurine sales even further. I want to see Nintendo succeed.
@Grumblevolcano Except that exploit only works on old versions anyway. It didn't even work on the latest update before this one.
I wish we would get the stamp shop. So I can waste even more money on useless Nintendo stuff
Does anybody know if this update fixes the spotpass glitch? Cause I was wanting to get those pink pieces.
You can register an amiibo, name it, delete the data and reset the data. So there's still no option to back up the data? Maybe Nintendo is planning on charging us $5 per year for an amiibo bank. Deleting hours worth of SSBU data to play anything else is a non-starter.
Kind of a pointless update if you ask me. Themes should be free anyway.
@Zach777 Themes should be free?? -_- If people have to put effort into designing and creating something then they have the right to charge for it!
Aren't Amiibo just collector figurines? Seriously... the barely anything that makes them even worth while.
@Thecoolmana777 I highly, highly doubt that a whole lot of effort goes into making those garbage theme backgrounds and sound clip copies ripped straight out of other games. Nintendo probably sticks one guy on that project.
I think the Home Menu update is kinda pointless without the Badge Center. Or maybe I'm just not creative enough to make a fun Home menu without the badges. Hrm.
@Captain_Gonru - I was only kidding about the cloud saves, but I am serious that there needs to be a data back up on the Wii U or 3DS if there is a delete data option. And my wife already told me a few days ago I was wrong, Nintendo would rather people buy new characters to play new games than save data for old ones. When I told her Nitneodo promoted amiibo as being better than the other toys to life toys b/c they would be usable in multiple games she just gave me a look like I'm an idiot for believing anything Ntinedo says.
I wish there was a "mix and match" home theme set up. Like you can have the background be Mario, the buttons be Zelda and the music be from Sonic.
YES!!! Oh my Arceus I need that pheripheral so bad! I already have 6 amiibo + one pre-ordered. I want to use them! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RELEASE IT SOON!!!
Where the hell are themes for the Wii U? The wara wars plaza is just begging for it. I mean just look at the Animal Crossing app, it was literally an AC themed wara wara plaza.
Can't I just have my hyrule field plaza already?
Ooh, glad for the layouts. It's hard to see some of the pictures on the themes sometimes.
Shameless how Nintendo has the gall to charge for those Home Themes, and to make things worse, they cost as much as quite a few actual eshop games!
Have they no shame???
Am I the only one bothered by this? I feel like I'm the only one bothered by this.
@MyBodyIsReggie Completely agree with you there!
Nice i love the new update but.... why nt make this kind of things on Wii U?!
I don't see why Nintendo need to add the NFC support the the 3DS line as they should be getting there sopporting the N3DS line.
I getting confused with what Nintendos doing in regards to there portable line.
They never gave there previes systems as much sopport as there current systems like they doing in regards to the 3DS & new 3DS now.
They quickly dropped major support with the ds DS line when they released 3DS, sis the same with the Wii when the Wii U released yet now that they got the New 3DS out, the only thing they treat both 3DS & New 3DS like if it's the same.
If I hadn;t known any better I would have thought that the New 3DS is just another 3DS akin to the DSi the the DS.
Another update? I don't always have my 3DS on when connected to WiFi and I have had it several occasions where my system firmware was older than my friends so we couldn't play together. I wish they would release these a little less often, maybe make a good update that will last a good while instead of constantly forcing us to connect online and watch a progress bar slowly crawl across the screen instead of playing.
@Kawaiipikachu New 3DS is a 3DS model... It's a hardware revision, not a new line.
@elric257 How come unlike the DSI As for example that it has faster proccessing power.
I hope Nintendo announces the amiibo puck and Badge Center in the next Nintendo Direct. What's the point of either of these updates if there's no fun use for them?
i really hope this means they're going to announce the badge center soon. i would buy way more themes if we also had badges.
@rjejr or you can get a new triple a title for a ps4 or Xbox one and pay 100$ for dlc to make it a decent sized game
@MyBodyIsReggie themes are aesthetics though atleast they aren't "flooding" their software with dlc bs
