The history of the Fire Emblem franchise in the West is far less substantial that its equivalent track record in Japan, with the strategy series enjoying a number of entries from the days of the original Famicom. Its struggles on a global scale, as has been well recorded, were eased by the success of Fire Emblem: Awakening, with the 3DS title revitalising the IP.
For recent or Western converts, the long history of the series can seem rather distant, so this collection of all the opening cinematics is well worth a watch. Sure, 'cinematic' is a slightly inaccurate term for the 8-bit entries, but it's interesting to see how it all evolved into the sweeping CG sequences we see in the modern day efforts.

Awakening is obviously the best
Sacred Stones remains my favorite FE so far!
@ZurrrrBlattTron Probably in gameplay, but I firmly believe they've yet to beat Path of Radiance's story or music. IF just might do it, though, at least on the story front.
The intro to Radiant Dawn is still so freaking hype to this day...
Awakening may have both it and Path of Radiance beaten when it comes to gameplay, but story-wise I have yet to see a Fire Emblem as enthralling and epic as that duo.
Ah, the nostalgic memories... damn ninjas, cutting onions right in my face. Y_Y
The only one released in the West I've not played is Path of Radiance. Not paying those prices for it unfortunately. If there was one game I wish would get a digital re-release it's that.
@LinkSword
Awakening better gameplay? Please, Radiant Dawn ANNIHILATES Awakening in terms of gameplay. Only thing Awakening has over Radiant Dawn is supports.
Not trying to be antagonistic, but I truly feel that Awakening's gameplay can't come close to touching Radiant Dawn's.
I haven't gone through them yet, but so far, I would say the Jugdral saga piques my interest the most of the continental sagas. Though, the Elibe and Tellius continents are the most well known...
From the FE wiki, this is the gist of the FE: Genealogy of the Holy War opening:
"Hundreds of years before the beginning of the game, the world of Jugdral suffered under the grip of the Loptyr Empire, whose lineage of emperors acted as vessels for their "dark god", the Earth Dragon Loptyr. This changed in the year 643 with the Miracle of Darna, where twelve dragon gods led by Naga descended upon the city of Darna, the last bastion of a battered resistance force, and in a blood bond bestowed their power upon twelve warriors. These twelve became the Twelve Crusaders, and under their leadership the Lopt Empire fell after a decades-long holy war. The Crusaders then parted, with seven of them forming the Kingdom of Grannvale and its six duchies, while the other five founded their own kingdoms: Isaach, Agustria, Silesse and Thracia, which itself later partially splintered off into the Manster District."
Radiant Dawn's opening is best of course, but Binding Blade/Sealed Sword is my favorite FE game (OP SWORDMASTERS, WOO).
Ah, silly mortals arguing over which newer Fire Emblem is better then the other... It's not really a fair fight, since the SNES Fire Emblems never made it into the Western hemisphere, past the Epic Center coverage in Nintendo Power on the eve of the Nintendo 64's release. If it had, I'm willing to bet there would be some individuals going for nostalgia and classic gameplay over all of the more complicated newer titles.
It also doesn't help that almost none of us can read the FE4 intro properly... It's kind of like a grim mythological creation story that doesn't pretend humans are the ones in charge, nor does it assert that human arrogance alone has an all-encompassing effect on the world's events- there's always someone pulling strings. There's no... deus ex machina... glares at Awakening... to bail us out of eventual destruction, not even with intervention, and our getting caught up in a greater struggle is inevitable.
@AVahne I think gameplay choices are very debatable in this particular case. I still believe Radiant Dawn and its prequel are the superior games overall, though. I want to feel as involved in a FE war as I did back then, not just for the story and characters but also for the amazing battles.
If you ask me the aspect where Awakening jumped the shark somewhat were the combo'd units. It's an idea with plenty of potential, but being able to ''rescue'' a unit and make the rescuing one stronger at the same time is too much of an advantage sometimes. I do think it balances out in the higher difficulties and most especially Apotheosis, however.
@DarthNocturnal It doesn't look like SMTxFE is going to have anything like Mara, Astaroth, or the bondage version of the Angel; it looks pretty tame by comparison to Strange Journey and SMT4. Teen rating looks appropriate for it, unless they pull out some more objectionable material. (Bikini summoners don't count, for all those puritans out there!)
Genealogy of the Holy War FTW, but every FE game is awesome. Come on Nintendo, you already have my money. You are making a Persona title but you put the FE logo on it, I will instabuy. You give me a Pokémon money rip off treatment with a dual release game, but with a FE logo on it, I will get three of each, DLC path included.
It seems this is a good era to be a FE fan, how the hell did you even think of leaving the franchise behind before Awakening? Nonsense!
@Peach64 Radiant Dawn is pretty shallow characters and story wise without the background of Path of Radiance. It's worth picking up, if you're interested in the Tellius saga.
Edit: GOOD GOD! It's $90+ Used now!?!? I had no idea... Well, I guess it's a nice nest egg to have...
Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are my favorite games of all time! The story is amazing and I love all the characters especially the green haired brothers.
@ZurrrrBlattTron Hand's down my favorite 3DS game!
@bro2dragons
Yup, Ikes' story was fabulous, the music as well. Radiant dawn was ok too
That Radiant Dawn intro is awesome to this day.
I absolutely loved Awakening, but I absolutely adore the GBA trilogy as well. And the Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn duo are just so in depth unlike any other Fire Emblem I've played (and look SO good on consoles).
I guess I love them all. They're each different in their own way (save perhaps Binding Blade and Fire Emblem 7, those games are nearly identical due to the same characters, art style and gameplay- which is unique in and of itself). There are things I love most about each game in the series.
I actually own all 13 games in English, took me forever to do it but as a FE fan I owed to to myself to have access to the complete collection.
Fire Emblem 7 will always be my favourite, got me into the series and been a fan ever since. Also I Really hope that the older Fire Emblem games get an official release outside of Japan one day. The SNES FE games (especially FE4) are gems, and it's a shame those games never made it overseas.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn all the way. PoR might not have had an amazing opening cinematic, while Radiant Dawn lacked a COMPLETE ending (rushed) and support system. But together, the Tellius Saga was the best I have played.
And that Radiant Dawn opening! Nothing gets close to that!
Okay, I know people like to pretend it doesn't exist because there's only about 5 people who liked it, but where's Shadow Dragon? It had possibly the best rendition of the Fire Emblem theme in the series, it really should've been here. Also I fully admit to being one of those 5 people.
My favorite intro is probably Thracia 776, oddly enough. I just really like the story of Leif being told there. It really made me actually want to sit through the intro, whereas a lot of the other ones just made me want to skip them a few seconds in. I haven't actually played much of the game because difficult, but it's still cool.
@ZurrrrBlattTron
Do you mean the intro? I'm not quite sure if it would be the best one, but it's definitely up there. If you mean the actual game, that's veeeery subjective and you can't really call just one the "best".
@AVahne
Huh, that's not the most popular choice, but I can understand why that might be your favorite in the series. I didn't actually finish it myself, in fact I only started playing it fairly recently, but there's a lot to like in it, with the gameplay, the characters, the supports, and even the battle animations.
Wow, look at all those Fire Emblem games Nintendo will never care enough to localize.
Ah, Fire Emblem. Once overshadowed by Advance Wars in the West, and now the sole bearer of the strategy torch of Intelligent Systems. (Code Name: STEAM might change that, but I think it's one-off). It's such a shame that Advance Wars went to ruin...
Yes, that pun was intended.
@DarthNocturnal It's definitely bs, but this problem is solved when you play the game on easy as your units heal after an enemy turn has ended. (Of course I could be mistaken as I applied a few patches to the game)
Man, I want my own copy of Path Of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn so bad!!
@JaxonH
That's awesome! I just got a copy of Binding Blade for Christmas last year, and its really quite fun. I wish I could get PoR and RD somewhere for a reasonable price.
Although I never finished it, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on the DS was my first foray into this incredible series! (I also have Fire Emblem: Awakening but I've been playing other games first like my 50+ hour save file in Fantasy Life )
Path of Radiance is definitely the best FE game imo, everything about that game feels perfect except the fact it's rare and hence to experience it you must spend a huge amount of money. Radiant Dawn has a similar price point too though hopefully Wii U VC helps bring these titles back from expensive eBay sellers.
@AVahne [insert obligatory Roy for Smash 4 comment]
Man these openings, especially the 3D ones, don't they just scream Fire Emblems Warriors collaboration? Or even a Fire Emblem Souls game, I think that'd be a good collaboration, more so than a Zelda Souls game.
When watching these intros together, you kinda had the feeling that Sealed Swords (the one that starred Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector) was the original considering it's the only Fire Emblem game that had no subtitle instead of thinking it was the seventh entry in the series.
@retro_player_22 Well, it was "the original" if you look at it from America's point of view. That was the idea when they took the subtitle off specifically for the Western release, to make it look like the first game in the series.
Fan translated all (or most?) from Japanese to English.
Intelligent Systems and/or Nintendo dont want my money?
Shame.
Where are DS versions? (because they are absent) Am i blind or you should edit name of this topic?
@AVahne
I agree totally and I really enjoyed Awakening. Nothing comes close to the Radiant Saga. I let my brother play Awakening and he loves Radiant Dawn and PoR. He wasn't compelled to finish Awakening and considered it a step back in story, gameplay, and even in-game character model and outfit/costume design. Awakening is a great solid FE but it can't hold a candle to the Radiant Saga.
It's missing Captain Falcon.
@L8T I don't know actually I played Sacred Stones and the story was really great! I liked it a bit better than Awakening and yes I was referring to the intro lol @bro2dragons well I never got to try the Radiant games but I heard they were great! @OmegaPowerDX Awakening was my first as well, then I got to try Sacred Stones!
This makes me want a FE collection on my Wii U....but i doubt that will happen.
PoR and Radiant Dawn are my favorites. Fire Emblem 7 is a close second (technically 3rd i guess) then Sacred Stones. Sadly I still don't get the love for Awakening......it's ok but just didnt grab me like the other 4. I must have played them through to the end 10 times each. Im struggling to go back and play FE:A a 2nd time.
I really hope they consider making a Wii U Fire Emblem but it looks like the Atlus RPG cross over is as close as we are going to get this generation
Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, and indeed Shadow Dragon are prime canditates for a re-release on the eShop. I'd personally be very interested in picking any of those up, since I've yet to play them.
Unfortunately, they are obscenely overpriced in the second hand market.
Path of Radiance - £119 used on Amazon (£299 new)
Radiant Dawn - £56.95 used on Amazon (£109 new)
I can live without playing the SNES ones though. I can accept that they're never going to be localised.
@edhe PoR & Radiant Dawn would be good as a remastered collection too. They could easily add a few battles before, between, and after if they wanted to expand it as an incentive to repurchase to those of us who have played the originals.
I've played all the American releases, just wish they'd localize more of the old ones. Awakening has the best support and gameplay, POR has the best story, but Sacred Stones is my fav overall, though maybe it's just nostalgia
Awakening is my favorite. People can fight over which is the best, but I say, enjoy them all.
