Arguably the most anticipated upcoming Nintendo Switch release is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
We still don't know much about it and even the name of the title remains a mystery. Around the time of E3 last year, Bill Trinen mentioned how Nintendo was "holding back" on the name to avoid revealing too much.
With this in mind, veteran video game journalist Paul Gale - who runs his own website, appeared in Nintendo Power and worked with many other video game outlets over the years - has shared a new blog post titled: "Rumour: Botw sequel’s name is (was) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Duality".
Gale's "intel" typically comes from friends he's made within the games industry "over the past 12 years". His latest post is slightly different, as it does not come from a "direct source", but is one that he felt was still worth sharing as a rumour. Here's the rundown:
"...the sequel to BotW and its main hook is right in the name, which establishes on the “Breath” familiarity from the 2017 hit and giving a nod to the fact that you can play as more than the aforementioned title’s Link (including various, polar themes), hence “Duality”.
"Duality between character abilities, on land and floating regions, past and present, darkness and light, etc. (The individual did note that this name was seen a considerable amount of time ago, supposedly, and could have been one of many template titles."
"...If real, it does make sense as to why Nintendo and Mr. Eiji Aonuma have been so hush-hush on the title. If fake or not final-yet-close to what the actual name ends up being, this still makes for an interesting topic to discuss."
As noted by Gale, what was seen by the source could have potentially been one of many template titles at an earlier point during Breath of the Wild 2's development.
YouTuber Nintendo Prime also mentioned on his recent live chat show how he's spoken to Gale about the source:
"If you guys are fishing for who his source is, it's not gonna happen...I'm not gonna tell you who his source is, he can confirm in the chat - me and him [Paul Gale] had a private conversation, I'm well aware of how he got this information...me and Paul have a trust, I'm not going to break that trust just to reveal sources...all I can tell you is it's someone who is fairly reliable."
Here's what Bill Trinen had to say during an interview with IGN last year when he was asked about Breath of the Wild 2's name:
“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important... Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”
What do you make of all this? Any idea what Breath of the Wild 2 might be called when it's eventually released? Leave your own thoughts and theories down below.

Personally I’m not feeling that one … 🤷♂️
Doesnt sound like a final title to me, but it makes sense.
I don't buy into the thought that the name could really spoil all that much. I mean, even if it is "Duality", it's such a vague word that it could have myriad different meanings in context of the game.
It certainly sounds weird but let's remember that breath of the wild sounded awful when we first heard it. No matter what the title, we'll get used to it.
Breath of Duality would be the death of true alchemy.
Breast of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: The Zelda of Legend (saw it on Twitter and rotfl)
I’d rather we keep workshopping some titles…
Deep Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild: Too Wild
Breath of the Wild: Back 2 Hyrule
Tom Clancy’s Breath of the Wild 2
New Breath of the Wild
Edge of Duality was already the name of a weapon in BOTW so maybe that’s why Nintendo is calling the sequel that?
Idgaf wtf it’s called.. give it to me asap.. not like ‘CyberPunk’ asap.. but as soon as it’s physically and COMPLETELY possible.. asap..
It could be called ‘Breath of the Butthole’ for all I care
I think Breath of Duality sounds fantastic, personally. It sticks with the “Breath” series, and I think “Duality” is a pretty cool word. It would make sense with the idea of the floating islands, making a dual world in a way. If it’s true, I’m hyped.
I'm not to sure about this one. If this was the title why would Nintendo hide it? It doesn't seem like it would really spoil anything. I Guess we'll just have to wait and see though.
There's no way the game is going to have either "breath" or "wild" in the name.
This sounds like something an edgy seventh grader would come up with.
New title should be
Zelda: Rumours Run Wild
Yeahhh, not feeling that at all. Sounds like one of those fake projects people make on Fanon.
If one of your sources for confirmation is Nintendo Prime then I honestly would just disregard this entire story…
If that ends up being the title, I'll
eat my hateat Link's hat!Removed - unconstructive feedback; user is banned
I'm not sure what I'd want the title to be, or if I'd really care a large amount...but this title sounds very anticlimactic.
I believe they did say that the name hasn't been revealed becayse it's a spoiler, so I could see it being something like this, but this one doesn't sound very "Zelda-y"
Hmmm, I'm saying that it's a no. We've seen so many Botw 2 "Title leaks" I just don't trust anything anymore.
I doubt that's it. Surely they can do better than that.
Too on the nose
You can always tell when a title is fan-made.
This is basically the title I made up in a random fan theory, it could be true but it also probably isn’t.
Duality? Sounds like a new finisher in Mortal Kombat.
@nitrolink But A Link Between Worlds does sound a lot like A Link to the Past despite taking place in the same world so it's likely. Same for Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures.
Sounds like a dumb, clunky title, but honestly I always thought that about the name Breath of the Wild too.
Removed - unconstructive
Breath of the Wild as a name was chosen to invoke the open, living world and its natural, post-apocalyptic appearance. It fits the game, it's memorable, and it's just a good subtitle.
Breath of Duality is practically meaningless by comparison. If you put a gun to my head and asked me to explain what it meant, the best I could come up with is that it takes 2 lungs to breathe. It sounds fake, even for a potential working title.
@JH1022 Which is the only thing that makes it sound like a possibility
@QueenKittenWrite
At least they aren’t reporting on switch force.
This new open world game has nothing to do with Elden Ring, though.
Duality doesn't give anything away. This title is more subtle,
The Legend of Zelda: Sword Breaker 2 with a Paraglider
BotW 2 has connection with A Link between Worlds. I think it has that same mechanic: ability to travel between Hyrule and Lorule. It's like the 'upside-down' in Stranger Things.
They basically created an open world Lorule and reused the same Hyrule in the first game. The Towers will served as a portal between these 2 worlds.
The same concept as adding Majora's Mask to complement Ocarina of Time.
Not a bad name if true. But honestly at this point, name or no name, I just want the game already!
How about breath of the child?
100% a fake name.
Duality seems to difficult word for the younger crowd to know, definitely isn't brand friendly.
This is certainly a rumor as it did not come to me directly from a source nor could I verify it in any way further. I chose to share it because it was surprising to receive and certainly interesting.
I’m skeptical myself and receive things often…usually holding onto them. This time I made a post because of the nature behind the how it was given to me, my interest in the game, etc.
It is true that in the 20+ years of being involved in the video game industry, going to E3’s, other events, and so forth, you develop friendships, but this is a different case which brings with it a lot less certainty.
We’ll see in another 78 days or so.
@QueenKittenWrite
There's nothing wrong with simply reporting what other communities are saying. I find it to be a bigger problem if a report lacks necessary research, much like ScreenRant/GameRant trying to do stuff about Zelda.
I've always been a believer in the 'play as someone other than Link' bit. I'm still thinking Zelda will be playable. But Breath of Duality definitely not the final title. Its just not clever or good in any way.
If the name itself is a spoiler are we not going to find out until the game loads the title screen?
I would be disappointed if the title had the words Breath or Wild in it.
Not a bad title if true, but I shouldn't be reading these posts because I don't need to get hyped for this game again when we aren't getting another trailer until at least june
Sounds like an air ball to me
There is no way he knows what the name of the game is or was.
It's just a rubbish name for so many reasons; Repeating "Breath of" makes no sense unless there's a shared breath mechanism in both games, otherwise it doesn't establish continuity it just creates ambiguity and dilutes BotW's trademark.
If Nintendo wanted to create continuity between the games, they should choose a name that's similar, without repeating elements. Before the second trailer, i thought "The Depths of Malice" would have been perfect: it keeps the X of Y structure, includes a slightly punny connection (breath/breadth and depth), and highlights the role hinted at in the first trailer for Malice in ganondorf's resurrection. Distinct name, but thematically linked.
"Breath of Duality" is just gibberish.
@invictus4000 "This one has time reversal mechanics in it, and i think clocks are cool, so it's totally going to be named 'Breath of Skcolc' because i totally understand how words work."
If this were a Square Enix game then "Breath of Duality X-II Double-Triple Undoing of Ages Redux" wouldn't be unbelievable, but it's not going to happen here. I know there were the "Oracle of" games, but those were planned as contemporaries, not sequels.
That's a breath of dissatisfaction from me
That's a terrible name...when have nintendo ever used the same thematic words in their zelda titles more than once.
maybe 'Air of Duality' would be better.
He obviously heard it from his Uncle who works for Nintendo….
sounds dumb XD and fake.
I thought “The Legend of Zelda: Call of the Sky (CotS)” sounded much more likely. It kind of ties in with Skyward Sword, which will probably be of some importance to the story with the floating islands and all.
“Breath of Duality” sounds off. It’s kind of cumbersome when you try to say it. These words don’t feel good in my mouth.
Most anticipated already came out though.
I like the title, tho Breath of Duality sounds a bit weird. I mean "breath" in connection with "duality", but I have absolutely nothing against the duality word in a Zelda game
Yeah, I don't buy into this rumour at all tbh.
Maybe it's the Wario Land article that NLife just put up, but was just thinking that maybe Nintendo will drop the "Legend of Zelda" part of the name and go forward with "Breath of the Wild" as the series name instead (basically a spin-off). Similar to what they did with the Wario and Yoshi series:
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 > Wario Land 2
Super Mario World > Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island > Yoshi's Island DS
Maybe the sequel therefore will be just Breath of the Wild: <something>
I'll take a punt at Breath of the Wild: Demise's Curse
"Breath pf Duality"? It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?
It's fine by me.
I just wish we could see a new trailer soon...
The Legend of Zelda: Breathe in the Wild
We'll find out in June
Nuff said
Link pushes his fingers into his eyes
I'd prefer Legend of Zelda: Dawn of Duality.
Not revealing the name of the game is neither here nor there really when it's already confirmed the game is in development. Yes, it could be held back due to the title revealing a key aspect of the game, but it's just as likely to be due to the release date being a way off, or the marketing strategy having a key date to reveal it.
Definitely sounds like a plausible title, but I don't buy the "Breath" inclusion. "The Legend Of Zelda" is the bit that tells you what game it is... obviously. Majora's Mask wasn't called Ocarina of Masks or Mask of Time... and for good reason - those names aren't very good, but also not accurate to the game.
Similarly, Breath of Duality isn't very good or indeed accurate. It's not "Breath" that sets the scene for Breath of the Wild - it's "Wild". If anything, "Breath of the" is limiting the sense of scale of the "Wild". Why would "Breath of" be paired with "Duality" if the Duality is a key game hook?
I definitely buy that this title was seen by a credible source and that there will be Duality in the game. I believe this is a placeholder title and the final title will be very different.
LoZ: Breath of the Wild 2: Breathe Wilder
LoZ: 2 Breath 2 Wild
LoZ: Electric Breathaloo
LoZ: Breath of the Wild 2 (Tentative Title) (Final Title)
Super LoZ: Breath of the Wild 2 Turbo X & Knuckles (featuring Dante from Devil May Cry 2)
Or, because the “back to basics” approach worked well when applied to gameplay…
The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda: CHAOS
Link now has a voice and talks like Jack from Final Fantasy Origin
It won't be Breath of Duality. And the idea that it has to have Breath in the title at all because it's a sequel... remember, the prequel didn't have breath in its title.
That name makes no sense. Also, I'd like the game have only Link to control. Makes it more simple.
As for the name Echoes of the Past or Echoes of Time could work better. Or some other word to replace time or past... something about the hand reverse time ability Link has.
@BongoBongo123 There has never been a direct sequel of a Zelda game, that continues the plot neither (Majora's Mask or Phantom Hourglass don't continue the plot, it's just the same Link). So who knows!
@BobLong-RickTangle I was just thinking the other day they might split the series in two. "The Legend of Zelda" for traditional Zelda games and "Breath of the Wild" for open-world games (and "Hyrule Warriors" for musou games).
Fake. They'll never use 'Breath' twice like that and as a whole it doesn't make enough sense. It's not Nintendo-like.
Stormsongs of the Light's Breath.
Altars of Breathless.
Cause of Breath.
Wildmaster(sword)
Wild Downfall.
Bebreath the Remains.
Master(sword) of Pupbreaths.
Link Hand Breath.
The Hyrulian Isthmus.
See..? Easy!😆🤘
Almost April and we still have no title, no big gameplay reveal etc. I really don’t think this is coming this year.
Why the hell would anywhere give credibility to someone who thinks the name will be Duality.
I'll have a bet with the fella, if it's called that then I am not allowed to buy the game, I think I am safe!
Whatever it's called I image they have some last minute changes to make after the bar being raised so much by Elden Ring. I don't think anyone expected BOTW to be surpassed before the sequel came out, but here we are with a game that focused on solving and improving on all the issues BOTW had.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they delay it another year to take on what they've learnt from From Software, as BOTW already had some influence from the other Soulsborne games.
I would personally welcome a delay too. Elden Ring will last a long time and I imagine Nintendo might want to put a bit of distance between the two games... or they'll just smash it again and blow everyone's minds.
The Legend of Zelda: Bad Breath
I'm not believing anything about BOTW 2 a rumored name or it remaining a 2022 release until Nintendo confirms everything
The real title: Breath of The Wild Deluxe
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Yes, but those game pairs are not on the same console. BOTW2 would not stand out if its subtitle shared any word with its original.
Breath of Duality barely makes sense. Breath of the Wild worked because it conveyed the sprawling landscape, the wind and elements, the general life within the open world etc. What is Breath of Duality meant to make me think of?
I personally don’t think there’s likely to be any truth to this one.
Yeah, I'm not buying it
@E_Gadds_Garage I'd like to add to that list
Breath of the Wild: Wild Hunt
This really seems like a name that would have been used in early game. Kind of like Zelda gaiden, which became majoras mask. I really dont like the name, I am hoping for something more fresh. Please dont have "breath of the", "wild" or "2" in it.
@Purgatorium no, it is meant to hype you up to its reveal. Because for years I've been anticipating its name. But if I were told it, that would make the reveal trailer less exciting.
Nah, it'll be something else. Though I do think making it rhyme or compliment Breath of the Wild would make sense. We're talking about the sequel to the bestselling game in the series by an order of magnitude, so I wouldn't consider previous naming conventions. BOTW sold more than several prior Zelda games combined.
If, and this is a big if, this is the final title, it could be alluding to a playable Zelda since Link and Zelda are opposite? Maybe?
This isn't really directed at anyone in particular. But the popular sentiment I'm seeing in this discussion is that potential title makes no sense. If, as Nintendo has stated, the title is key to spoiling what the game is about, then of course it makes no sense. We still know very little about the game. If this is the title (and I really don't care one way or the other), then I'm sure it'll make sense once we know more about the game, it's plot, and it's gameplay.
I also don't buy having "Breath of" in the title as having any adverse effects on the reception of the game. Is anyone really going to not buy this game just because it has a similar title structure to the first?
Rolls right off the tongue.
I hope he's wrong. 😆
@Razer-Sword But if they revealed it in a trailer that would make the title screen hype less exciting. I don't think we're maximizing hype possibilities here.
What if they don't reveal the name until you've finished it?
LOZ Breath of the delays
Awful title, and I think its fake.
@UmbreonsPapa i think the usual arguments is sharing a name causes confusion in consumers (see: grandma buying game) and leads to missed sales because people think they need to play the previous title
whether those are accurate, is a different issue
Breath doesn't need to be in the title. "The Legend of Zelda: Duality of the Wild" sounds much better while still tying back to BotW.
I’ve always thought Breath of the Wild really should’ve been more aptly titled “Breadth of the Wild”… y’know cuz of its wide range and breadth. Yea you got it.
In terms of the sequel, I think Duality while it’s ok since it also has a Link to the number 2… might be a little too (2oo?) on the nose if it’s really indicative of the game mechanic. Let’s not be Square Enix of late here with the titling. Btw I love puns. Thanks.
… Wun can only hope.
Breath of Duality is letting one rip during a burp.
Seriously, that's a rubbish name.
@E_Gadds_Garage these all seem VERY Nintendo! 😂
Forgot "breath of U"
@E_Gadds_Garage @koffing I have a really bad chest infection and cough right now so both of your name suggestions nearly killed me when i started laughing. What a way to go xD
@E_Gadds_Garage Lemme just add to this list
Breath of the Wild: Super Star Saga
Tony Hawk's Breath of the Wild 2
Super Breath of the Wild R
Breath of the Wild Advance 3: Korok's Island
Breath of the Wild May Cry (Ft. Dante from the Devil May Cry series)
Hopefully that isn't the final name, cuz I'd say it's not a great name. I always liked 'Death of the Wild' for a sequel name.
Sounds like a placeholder
Stupid name to be fair
I'll stick with Zelda III: A Ganon Again.
@BobLong-RickTangle I highly doubt they would go that way. But if they do, then I've just come up with a perfect name for a game with both Link and Zelda playable:
Breath of the Wild: Two. Or maybe even Breath of the Wild Two. As in, Link and Zelda, the Wild Two.
haha, jk obvs
That sounds almost like an internal title. Like, you know... Project Triangle Strategy.
A working title that just describes the mechanics. And then... they don't change it for some reason.
Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 actual name will be tied to the main mechanic or character of the game.
Guys it doesn’t have to have Breath Of in the name
@1ofUs heck no playable Zelda sound amazing at firs but if you really think about it, it is dumb
