I bought the GameCube version about a year before the remake was announced, never having played it. Then of course I bought the remake. Still haven’t played either one, so I can’t say which is better yet. I’m one of those weirdos who enjoys Sticker Star.
That clinches it. Digital for me! I don't have any faith that LRG will fulfill their target shipping date. The last thing I ordered from them was a blind box for Vita. It took over a year. My daughter was conceived and born in less time. Unless you're padding your backlog, there's no incentive to buy from LRG. Celeste and Golf Story both appeared at my local Best Buy shortly after I received them from LRG... and they were cheaper.
I'm keeping a close watch on this one! The idea is similar to a sliding number puzzle RPG I was working on. The gameplay in my design was one-note, so I gave up. This however seems to have solved the issue by having content scrolling around the edges. Genius.
I sank about 12ish hours into Hollow Knight before reaching the conclusion that it's simply not for me. Since I bought a physical copy, I was able to sell it and recoup my investment. I'm happy it has so many fans and wish the best for Team Cherry's sequel.
The Game Boy SaGa games were my introduction to RPGs. My local grocery store sold electronics, so I used to ogle the boxes for Adventure, Legend, Legend II, and Legend III, reading the descriptions and marveling at the tiny screenshots. I saved up and eventually got them all. Yes, I'm a longtime SaGa and Mana fan.
After reading this, my takeaway is "PJ didn't like it." That's valid, but the review felt more like a rant than a review. Did the game camera give you trouble? How were the loading times? Was text difficult to read in handheld mode? How many hours did you put into it? Is the music memorable? I'll have to find another review.
If this was real, I would buy an Xbox this afternoon and request a week off work. Say what you will about Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter... I own those trilogies for PS3, but the bear and breegull are my favorite combination. Grant Kirkhope's music still pops into my brain whenever I'm humming or absent-mindedly whistling.
This could be really interesting! I'm a fan of the art style because it feels right at home on the DS. I'm one of those weirdos who bought a stylus for the Switch to relive the DS glory days. Here's hoping Switch 2 comes with its own stylus and some games that actually utilize it.
@Con89 I had to think a bit, but here are two instances when a demo isn't outright free. The first is an expo that charges an entrance fee, and the second is a Kickstarter project that provides early access to backers. We are probably old farts, but newer (younger) gamers may not have tried a demo before, so they may not know demos are free. I'm thinking of all the new gamers drawn in by games like Princess Peach: Showtime!.
I hope to give Pepper Grinder a proper go. Only had a few minutes with it so far, but it's excellent. The other night I completed the demo for Princess Peach: Showtime! I'm surprised by how fun it was. One chapter remains in Detective Pikachu, so hopefully I'll wrap that up.
A few years ago, I discovered the OST for this game by Lena Raine. Magnificent music. I think the game debuted on Xbox? Didn't play it myself, but the reviews at the time said it needed a lot of work. Maybe the Switch version will be better? Who am I kidding. Switch ports are usually an afterthought.
I'm a sucker for storybook games like this! Storyteller and RPG Time: The Legend of Wright are both lots of fun. The core mechanic here looks like the reverse of A Link Between Worlds. Instead of going from 3D to 2D, the Plucky Squire goes from 2D to 3D. I like it.
@Samalik Too much of a good thing easily leads to consumer apathy. Sonic Mania got me pumped for what felt like a true continuation of the 2D series. But then Frontier came along, followed by Origins, and then another movie... keeping pace with Sonic suddenly felt exhausting. That's my experience anyway.
Like a few others, I too picked up Superstars from Best Buy for only $20. I held off on launch day knowing it would see discounts eventually. But gosh that was quick! I've been enjoying it except for some sluggish transitions between menus and zones. I suspect the low sales are due to Sonic fatigue. Let's see... two Sonic movies, numerous LEGO sets, countless toys, multiple TV shows, and a stream of games. A little Sonic goes a long way! Maybe give 'em a break.
Microsoft hasn't learned. A development company is made up of people with various talents. When you fire some of those people, the company's DNA changes. Before long, it's a completely different company. So... what did they buy? IPs. That's all. They're buying someone else's ideas because they have none of their own.
@Crono1973 Since I've been playing Ace Attorney, I feel obligated to shout, "Objection!" Knowing what the defendant ordered at McDonald's could make all the difference! I'm joking, of course. But if this were an Ace Attorney game, we would inspect the receipt and learn the defendant ordered a filet-o-fish... which makes no sense because the defendant is deathly allergic to fish! So, the true culprit impersonated the defendant after the crime and then celebrated at McDonald's!
Wrongly chose Nayru because of the "Nayru's Love" item that protects you. Thought it might have been related. Wrongly chose 14 songs because I counted a song from Majora's Mask (song of double time). Lastly, got Floormasters and Wallmasters confused. Pretty sneaky, indeed!
Mario has two distinct styles that are both profitable: side scroller and sandbox. Same with Metroid. Zelda has top-down and third-person styles. It’s a buffet for fans, so enjoy what you like! I liked both Zelda styles up until BotW, which is when the third-person style spun off into an open world style. It’s not my thing, but at least the two Zelda styles are more distinct than before.
As someone who owned an Xbox One X, which I received for free along with several free download codes, no thanks. I miss Rare Replay and Tembo the Badass Elephant, but that’s it. Everything that would have kept me in that ecosystem (Tunic, Ori, Super Lucky’s Tale) wound up on Switch.
@KingMike The next best thing is a digital version of the guide from Nintendo itself, available on their regional website here: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/en_us/index.html It’s just one of the many manuals they made available when the SNES Classic Edition launched. I’ve downloaded everything because I love print design (it’s the reason I became a graphic designer). They used original assets where possible. Great stuff. I think they did the same for the NES Classic, but I don’t have a link handy.
Champion’s Road in 3D World (Wii U). I died over 700 times before taking a long break. A few months later, I came back fresh and beat it… but I missed one green star. I haven’t had the guts to go back and grab it.
For the 2DS, walking back the 3D support felt like Nintendo caving to critics. Even this article regards 3D as “admittedly gimmicky,” which I know is a popular opinion. But it has never been a gimmick to me. It’s an element of immersion that I wish had become a standard offering. That said, I picked up a refurbished blue and black 2DS from Nintendo’s website a few years ago. I nicknamed it Azul and grew to appreciate its inelegance. The design fixes the strange spatial gap between the top and bottom screens in certain games. You’ll need some headphones though if you want to enjoy stereo audio.
Yeesh, these are both awful. The NA tells me almost nothing, but its tagline intrigues me (along with the lightning). I’m feeling some Stargate vibes with the pyramids. The Japanese cover suggests a fantasy RPG of the lowest-quality imaginable, so that’s a hard pass. NA for me.
I watched a bit of Kit and Krysta back in the day, and I must confess they fooled me into thinking they were simply show hosts. I never knew that their jobs were so involved. That line about the Wii U was painful but honest.
I'm trying to avoid seeing too much of the game, but man... those pixels are perfection. They're like sugar crystals, and my sweet tooth is getting hangry.
Wait, did they ever finish that Vikings on Trampolines game? Seeing that they've shifted to "remixing" this game instead, perhaps the other one has been put on ice.
@FishyS I fully agree. This particular style for the characters is awful, and Goofy got the worst of it. It's frustrating because the background artwork in the modern cartoons is brilliant stuff. It's just sad that the actual characters went through the blender.
How did that rumor about finding Mew under a truck get started? I had forgotten all about it until reading this! I learned about Pokémon when a friend brought his yellow Game Boy Pocket to school. My brain almost exploded by the sheer awesomeness of being able to catch, trade, and battle critters. It's precisely that blend of in-game stuff with real-world stuff that made Pokémon so compelling in my youth.
@Moistnado I'm sure you're right that they didn't start out this way. I learned about the license thing by reading the legal bits in my game manuals. Must have been around the GBC or GBA era, hard to recall exactly. I should bust out a GameCube or DS manual.
Probably for the best. Most emulators fly under the radar, but putting this on the Steam Deck was bound to raise eyebrows (Nintendo's eyebrows). I'm sure nobody cares, but nobody "owns" any Nintendo game except Nintendo. Despite the hundreds of physical games I "own" on discs and cartridges, they only represent a license between me and Nintendo to play a given game. Sad but true.
@Ooyah Don't listen to the naysayers--your puns aren't corny. They lifted me from a melon-choly mood. Let's be spuds! I'm sure wheat get along great. OK, now I'm just trying to flax my vocabulary. Seems like Turnip Boy has strayed far from the straight and farro. Butter leek this info to the crops. Okra, that's enough.
Talk about a missed opportunity for the whole smart TV market. It's mind-boggling to me that TV remotes didn't evolve to include Wii-style pointer controls built in (and by that logic, smart TVs having sensor bars). Using directional arrows on a standard remote to type in passwords and email addresses feels excruciatingly backward. Looks promising apart from the ill-fitting trailer music, which I suspect is not actually the game's music. A big part of the DNA of PoP is the running, climbing, and jumping while finding a path forward. Combat is popular these days, obviously, but I would enjoy a stronger focus on the athletics. Or maybe I just need to play Mario.
I played DX in monochrome on my Game Boy Pocket until I could afford a Game Boy Color. I even tried getting into the color dungeon, but if course it would't let me. When I eventually got a GBC, I replayed the whole game in color. It was truly the best of both worlds. The remake is gorgeous and I love it, too, but man... DX takes the cake for me.
The business side of Nintendo is still as ruthless as ever. Presumably they have a legal right to be upset about the leak, but the level of retaliation feels disproportionate to the offense. The fact that they can tell GameStop what to do sounds a bit like bullying. Then again, GameStop employees are expected to adhere to company policies. Either way, it's not a good look for Nintendo or GameStop.
I hated Mario Kart for many years until playing it on Wii with motion controls (no wheel though, didn't have one). It was a revelation to me, not a gimmick. These days I use motion controls almost exclusively. I imagine it's extra humiliating for my online opponents when they see the motion control icon beside my name. I don't always win of course, but I win often.
@-wc- Start a club? 🙂 Seriously, this is like solving a cold case. You're probably right about Mario being on skates. I have fond memories of being at the skating rink myself and mostly watching people play arcade games. A seemingly rare game I recall was Hook, based on the Robin Williams movie. The home console games were way different, but the arcade version was a cool side-scrolling beat-em-up for two players. Until recently, I couldn't find any photos on Google to prove it existed. I still haven't met anyone else who remembers it, much less played it.
@-wc- Holy cow, I know what you're talking about! The cabinet I played was a sit-down cabinet (built-in seat, screen beneath the tabletop). I could have sworn he was riding a skateboard, but maybe they were skates. I thought at the time that it was a cheap knockoff, but it must have been some kind of ROM hack loaded onto an arcade board. Wow. I had completely forgotten this until your post.
I've got the first two games on Wii U, so initially I wasn't inclined to double-dip. But man! The clean, bright, crisp art direction in these screenshots has me salivating. Time to scrounge up some disposable income!
This looks like it could be a lot of fun! I can imagine playing it with my daughter when she's a little older. It always amuses me to see Batman throwing punches alongside two demi-gods. I do enjoy the character (especially LEGO Batman), but it seems silly to pretend that he's a mere mortal. Money! Money is Batman's super power. 🙂 Edit: The video thumbnail flipped Superman's emblem. Always a dead giveaway.
Wow, the "Battle at the Big Bridge" video is insanely well done. Thanks for sharing. First time I've heard the music. How do they play it so fast? Much less together? Impressive.
@Sam_TSM I'm in a similar boat even though I bought it twice; I'm hoping we'll get a sequel that takes things in a more concrete direction. The bits that worked were immensely enjoyable (music, humor), but the disappointing bits trampled my spirits (story, theme). Trying to be non-spoiler-y here. I mostly wish that specific threads were not left dangling.

Re: Nintendo Adds One Of The Most Divisive Zelda Entries To 'Nintendo Music'
Nice! I recently downloaded the app and was disappointed by Zelda II’s omission. The game is overdue for a DX edition or maybe even a remake.

I mostly wish that specific threads were not left dangling.
