Update (24th January):
Nintendo has now published a localised version of this trailer, with updated narration and equivalent footage of the English language build, above. Enjoy!
Original Article (7th January):
Easily the most anticipated Switch game of January 2022 is Pokémon Legends: Arceus - it's an entirely new take on the long-running monster taming series that sends players back to the past. It's out on 28th January, and in the lead-up, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have been sharing more and more footage of the game.
The latest clip to be published is an introduction trailer. Although it's in Japanese, it still gives trainers a good look at how the game will play - showcasing six minutes of the landscape, Pokémon, people and customisation on offer. There's also plenty of footage of the battle mechanics and modes of transportation.
Once again, this is a Japanese trailer - but Nintendo should share an English video of the same footage in the near future. Click below to see the latest video:
New key art has also been shared. Here's a look courtesy of Serebii.net:
Pokémon Legends: Arceus will arrive exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on 28th January. Are you excited for it? Tell us down in the comments.

Very heavy BOTW vibes, of course I'm sure that is completely intentional, would not shock me at all if the BOTW team assisted in some ways with this game.
Anyway it looks much better than earlier footage, and I'm leaning on being cautiously optimistic for this game. Obviously with Game Freak you have to tempter expectations, but I have hope that perhaps Nintendo took a more hands on approach and assisted with development.
Either way that trailer actually made me kinda excited for the game, can't wait to try it out.
looks interesting but I will wait for reviews. I won't get it day 1 though
Looks way better than when first revealed. Looking forward to it.
If it reviews well, I'll pick it up digital Day 1. I'm willing to support innovation in this franchise. All other Pokemon games I've picked up on switch were second hand physical, so no $$$ went to Nintendo.
I usually don't care too much about graphics, but man there's something about this art style that just doesn't sit right with me. It looks so bland and unnatural. It's like they took the assets from BOTW and removed all the lighting and effects.
I be pre-ordering next week physical copy to be able share it with my youngest brother when I'm not playing, I planned pre-order it way sooner like I did with BDSP (pre-ordered in September 5th), but my money was tightly counted till this month since October, so.
Even for the Switch, those graphics are utter trash.
Idk, looks great to me. I think this game will be a lot of fun. Definitely get it digitally on release day.
Looks good for a Switch game.
@QueenKittenWrite Doubt the Zelda team helped at all with this. Monolith probably did, but the game isn’t even open world. It’s a bunch of segmented areas that you need to select from the hub world, like monster hunter.
@StarPoint The majority of the environment, namely trees, aren't casting shadows when viewed from above. Defiantly gives an unnatural field.
I think the game will probably be fun, but there are aspects with the graphics where I really think they could have done much better.
You know, I'm excited! Probably not a day one buy but totally worth checking out at some point or borrowing from a friend
@thechetearly Eh, I disagree. They aren't the greatest in the world, but I wouldn't say they're "utter trash".
Give us a Direct you cowards!
@Seacliff yeah, the pop-in for this game is pretty bad, and they haven’t used a technique to stop it from being as apparent, like Botw’s fog.
With a bit of luck, we may see actual gameplay before it releases.
Will check out the trailer tomorrow morning after my surgery. I’m looking forward to this game despite the “pretty good” at best nature of the previous main series games on Switch.
Really looking forward to this and will pre order off the store so my partner can play aswell on her switch.
But I will say one thing, I can't wait for a Nintendo console to reach the specs of the PlayStation 5.
Pokémon games are going to look so good and the world is going to be more populated and more beautiful as that is my only gripe with this game, the world looks plain and low textures and no where near the level of breath of the wild
@UltimateOtaku91 By the time that happens you'll be wishing it looked like the PS7.
@SpaceboyScreams nah the current gen consoles won't be improved much more than what they are now, I mean the matrix tech demo was pretty much life like in terms of the people. I'd be happy if next gen console graphics stayed the way they are currently. I don't care much for photo realism
I, for one, am all in for this level of graphical fidelity if it means the game runs smoothly, the framerate during that first trailer looked positively awful. Based on this trailer it does look like they've fixed that part pretty well, at least when there isn't a huge number of models on screen at the same time.
@Tuulenpoika With the first trailer, the frame rate was fine. It was just that the pokemon were all 2D images, except for the ones really really really close to the trainer. It's apart of a technique that lets pokemon load in without really popping up randomly like in Let's Go and Sword and Shield. The only thing is that it's supposed to be the pokmeon being low frame 2D images further away, but since they probably just implemented the technique before the first trailer, that's why it gives the illusion of the game running at low frames.
I’m not ready to be brutally (and repeatedly) murdered by wild Pokémon...
I don't know... The graphics just in that video seemed so random? Like sometimes you could see textures in a tree moving with the wind, while other times it just looked like a Bob Ross painting, and others it was clearly missing some shadows.
Just give me some consistency, and bump the main focal points, for me anyways.
By that I mean I could live with some less than polished trees if the people and such were looking better. Or I guess as a Pokemon game, maybe some more attention to the surroundings with cartoony people and Pokemon, as that would somewhat make sense in the world.
I just don't know. It all seems random and awkward to me. As much as I want to want it, I'll be waiting for reviews and more gameplay detail. It's not an auto-buy for me.
Looks good. They were obviously inspired by BotW, but I'll more than gladly take it.
I made a comment earlier today that this game doesn't look like it has an actual plot and this trailer just adds more to that speculation. I can't seem to figure out what GameFreak's intention is with this game. Are they just trying to keep the same mediocre quality of the more recent Pokemon games in tact while applying those concepts to a BOTW rip off? That's odd.
Uhh didnt see anything new or refreshing in this video.. i get mixed feelings after this.
Battles look better than any pokemon game, but the world looks kinda empty.
I really hope there is more to do than trowing balls at pokemon.
Basically just six minutes of what they've already showed us with VERY brief snippets of new footage spliced in between. NOT a good sign for a game that comes out in three weeks and it we still have almost zero ideas of what the game will provide outside of the core gameplay loop which looks like it'll get old after about an hour.
Like is this seriously just going to be "Throw Pokeballs: The Game"? Like at least SW/SH and BDSP had side content to try (and fail) and give the game variety...
Well I’m excited. Not expecting a masterpiece but I’ve always enjoyed this series even when it’s just doing the same old. It’s just a easy to enjoy formula.
At the same time I’m not against it trying a few new things like this one. Love the focus on filling out the Pokédex, that was always my favourite part.
But will we be able to ride a bear in this game?
Looks really great
It looks ok for a Pokemon game that is trying something different.
Just like most people I will wait for reviews and footage from real playthroughs.
Please be good, please be good!
Tempting but Kirby is still my first game of interest in 2022 that I am eager for more info.
It's different that's for sure But why not? All Pokemon games sell pretty good. Go ahead and try something new why not? If it fails it fails but it will sell either way.
it looks like a videogame that's for sure
I'm very excited for this no matter what. I like the idea of filling in the Pokedex and not having too much story. Some of the games **cough sun and moon cough** were so cut-sceney and hand-holdy when I just wanted to play so this looks like a good get-on-with-it game. Never know, it might have a great in-depth storyline. Also I like the graphics. Amazing realistic graphics would be cool, but it's Pokemon that looks like Pokemon so I don't care. I'm looking forward to a different style of game than the traditional ones - bring on Gen 9 for that. If there's one little thing I wish could be included that doesn't look to be, it's having one of your team out of their pokeball to follow you I want my Cyndaquil following me! Three weeks to go
I like how people are being cautious about this and not pre-ordering. It’s basically saying “we like the looks of this, but we don’t entirely trust you, Nintendo”
So is this just an outdoors game? So far they haven't shown any dungeons.
I definitely want to play this, but it's not going to be a day one - mainly due to playing Diamond/Pearl still. I fear that with the insane release schedule Nintendo have planned for 2022, Arceus may end up passing me by.
I wish they hadn't released Diamond/Pearl just 2 months ago.
"See that Pokemon? You can walk to it and catch it."
I stopped caring about Pokemon a while ago, but I'm curious what kind of gameplay loop Arceus will offer, because at this point I just don't see what's supposed to keep you playing.
It looks like a very early tech demo that they thought, fxck it, just release it as a game. it has potential but what I have seen looks completely lifeless and void of any atmosphere or fun.
At least it looks a lot better than in the previous trailer. I think the graphic is ok, not that good, but also not that bad. I am looking forward to playing it in two weeks! I am certain that I will have a lot of fun with it.
It looks amazing and I applaud Gamefreak once again for trying something new, can't wait to play it!
It still looks like it has potential. I hope this'll be the first decent (perhaps even great) Pokémon game in years, even if it's only a sidegame. Of course, it'll sell millions of copies either way.
Looks very similar to BotW visually. Up close things look as good as you would expect from a Switch game. In the distance they should have tried to be more aggressive with trying to hide the ugliness, like BotW. BotW has fog and low brightness on distance objects so you can't make things out clearly, hiding things like what we see here with trees sticking out like sore thumbs.
Perfectly happy tbh with the visuals and performance (assuming it is not carefully picked to look better than it is). Now to wait for reviews to see if the game is actually any good.
I'll hold off until the reviews are out before considering getting this. My main concern is whether the gameplay is any good, or whether it will get boring fast. And also, will it be fun to explore the region? The new trailer doesn't reveal much, so I'm unsure about these things.
The game has a lot of potential, but there's always the possibility that it'll end up being mediocre.
I feel equally excited and terrified about this game. I can't tell if I'll love it or hate it. Gameplay looks like it'll be amazing, but I worry about how it runs and if it will have an actually decent story. I hear that sword/shield's story got very stale, and that kept me from getting it.
At least trees look a lot better than in Sword and Shield
It looks to be in a much better state than previous footage that's been shown, which is something of a relief. I'm happy to sit back and wait for reviews though, I'm not going to pre-order.
its so odd to me that Nintendo has waited until the month-of and has still not heavily shown the game off or fully described its scope. People still haven't played it at all.
Why is Nintendo so guarded with it? Makes me suspicious
The mounted Wyrdeer is shown traversing a mountainy area. That is neat. I notice that in so many open world (or similarly designed landscapes) games, mounts can not traverse such areas and thus are pretty useless for a lot of exploring.
Weird that Pokemon of all things would understand that problem and work to improve upon it.
I feel the series has been in a downward spiral for a while now, replacing its sense of wonder with tedious hand holding and recycling overused formulas. I really hope this can be a Breath Of The Wild moment for the franchise as I still really love Pokémon. I'm cautiously hopeful.
THIS LOOKS AMAZING I WANT IT NOW
ahem
Pokémon Legends: Arceus appears to be a game that will drastically improve the Pokémon series, and hopefully instill some improvements in the mainline games.
ahem
I NEED THIS GAME NOW!!!
Monolith really needed to help GameFreak out (via Nintendo) with the engine on this game to make the textures and so on look better. They helped with the polishing of Breath of the Wild, they could have with this to make it look and perform as well as it has the potential to.
@Mando44646 Usually that's left up to Gamefreak. Pokemon has always done its own thing, including separate directs
cant say they put in too much effort, understandable tho, i mean it will sell anyway, lol
I think it looks good 🤷🏻♂️ could this be the first Pokemon game I buy without returning to the store shortly afterwards since Blue / Red? Waiting on reviews now!
I love the scene in this trailer where Snorlax does a Body Slam on you
I am optimistic since it does look like a new experience for the franchise. As long as it isn’t choppy through most of the game, I think I will survive. Not preordering for sure as Walmart is always cheaper at store and it’s not like they will under produce this.
@UltimateOtaku91 I've been hearing people say that since the N64. There's always room for improvement, you just have to see it to believe it.
I mean, it looks absolutely gorgeous but I still am not sure what the point of it is... You capture Pokemon, yes. You have battles Pokemon on Pokemon in the wild that can also harm you, yes. But no trainer battles? Or gyms? Or.... I struggle to understand the objective. And that alone makes me want to buy it yesterday.
Why an overview trailer so soon?! I don't even know if there will be an equivalent to Megas in this game, because that would be cool. What about climbing mountains, too?
This is definitely a wait for reviews game. The visuals are rather weak but I honestly don't expect much from Gamefreak.
If the gameplay is there I'll check it out.
Looks so good. Pokémon desperately needed this shake up.
I keep trying to get into Pokémon and keep giving up after playing a bit. But this game looks like Pokemon: Monster Hunter Edition and I'm there for it.
The delusion is strong, this game does not look good. I can't wait for the day 1 bitching when people realize this isn't Breath of the Pokemon.
Looks like a fun new Pokémon game. Looking forward to release.
@Tarolusa It's called not tipping your entire hand. Maybe they want players to discover some stuff for themselves? It's not that farfetched?
Liked the art style when this was first revealed, now it looks even better.... not long to go now.
This is going to be a awesome sauce game. I preordered a digital copy to my switch lite shortly after January begin. can't wait to see it in person.
The movement and characters lots of other things is very Fire Emblem Three Houses
Sorry but why is there an Arc phone? Have I missed this in previous trailers?
Apricorn style pokeballs, new Voltorb version, no vehicles to speak of and yet the god of Pokemon has bestowed upon the main character a phone. Whut?
Already played it.
The game is AWESOME, breaks the old tiring formula and is even challenging in some aspects, while keeping the core Pokemon experience (Pokemon types, friendly story, turn based combat, etc). If you like the franchise you will love this game, hopefully we get more of this Legends setting in the future, because THIS is the way Pokemon games should take. It's not a perfect game and it doesn't reach Breath of the Wild's levels, although the map has more "life" in it than BotW, but it is really a great Pokemon game.
It feels more like an RPG and for what I've seen it seems like it's a really long game, I'm like 8hrs into the game and have only discovered 2 "regions", which are HUGE and with a lot of different Pokemon to catch and battle, seriously recommending this, 9/10, my only complaint is that I'd love the combat system to be more action RPG. I haven't seen any frame drop issues, the game runs super smooth and it's a ton of fun, I don't drop many details because I don't want to spoil anything.
Looking forward to this arriving friday! Chimchar is the 1st mon I want to catch haha
Honestly, this feels like the Pokemon game that should have been first on the Switch. Looks like a proper evolution of the franchise on more powerful hardware.
Really looking forward to playing this on Friday.
Looks more a revolution than evolution of previous games. High hopes.
I'm so hyped, i've been following most of the links though avoiding footage and its pretty much almost the PM game i've always dreamed about going by what i've read.
I think going forward each Gen should have its typical mainline game, a remake game and a Legends game, everything is covered then.
@Dethmunk Here's the person who thinks their opinion is the only one and that graphics are everything.
@Dethmunk I'd love to understand what your basing your comment on. I personally think the game looks great, not sure what you're looking for here. Maybe wait till its released, play it, then judge. Not just slam it for no reason bar a few compressed trailers.
@Dethmunk my girlfriend is objectively ugly as heck, especially when compared to other beautiful women, but I think she’s breathtaking. Might be the reason why I find Legends graphics to be nice.
@Dethmunk your aesthetic sense isn't the end all be all buddy, so kindly sit down and stew yourself.
@Laserbeak1982 to his tiniest bit of credit. I doubt the textures will look more hi-res on the actual hardware.
However, it will probably look better on our s reens while sitting away from the tube or switch screen, so...
Dethmunk goes to McDonald's and slaps burgers out of people's hands and screams at them that Burger King and Wendy's are better and that they're all absolute morons with no taste who should be embarrassed for enjoying McDonald's. It's true, I've seen him do it
Genshin impact looks better on my mobile & it's a ftp game
Not to champion or support folks getting early copies of the game. But I have read some early impressions and most seem to be positive. Not just this is a fun game kind of praise. But that this is the shake up the series needed kind of positive. That has reignited my excitement for this game. Especially after the disappointment that was SwSh and BDSP (which is a treat to rediscover. But wish it could have been more). Luckily, I didn't pay for Brilliant Diamond (got it from eShop gift cards). So I won't feel too put out if PLA is as good as some are saying it is and I decide to splurge
@Kiz3000 your character just finds it on the ground at the beginning of the game
@UmbreonsPapa The game is awesome, you won't be disappointed.
The games looking better everytime
Could’ve used another year in the oven going by visuals alone but I’m not gonna complain about every Pokémon game being lazy only to turn my nose up when they actually do try a lot of new things just because it looks sub par (and to be honest, from what I’ve seen there are parts that look quite lovely, it’s just not consistent). Impressions from people playing the leak have been really positive from what I’ve seen and I love the atmosphere in the bits of footage I’ve at. Really excited for it!
Still waiting for reviews before picking this up.
