Nintendo Switch Online's brand new Expansion Pack subscription has finally launched, giving members who sign up to the service access to a line-up of classic Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive titles.
However, according to some folks online the new service is having some teething problems at this early stage, with reports of input lag and framerate issues among the noise. In addition to these more general problems, it seems some games also have more specific issues.
As reported by our pals over at Eurogamer, Mario Kart 64 is having an issue related to saving Ghost Data, something which required players to have an N64 Memory Pak back in the day and hasn't, it seems, had a workaround implemented in this emulated version.
Super Mario 64 is also missing a rumble feature that appears in the Japanese Expansion Pack version of the game. Rather than being a specific technical issue, however, the Japanese version of Super Mario 64 is the Shindou one which was updated with Rumble Pak support, so if you want that feature it appears you'll just need to grab the Japanese Expansion Pack app - so check out our handy guide on how to do just that!
Sin and Punishment has been reported to have some control issues involving how it's mapped its strafing. In the original N64 release, the strafe left and right actions were mapped to the yellow controller buttons, and in this emulated version these are replicated on the Switch's face buttons. However, the Switch version has you pressing the right trigger to shoot, which then remaps the face buttons at the same time. This leads to the right strafe no longer working on the face buttons, however, you can also use the D-Pad to strafe so besides being a little awkward this isn’t really a huge issue.
Further to these specific issues, there are apparently some framerate and sound problems with Mario Kart 64. We've played the game briefly ourselves and have experienced the soundtrack stopping and starting at random, so that's definitely an issue, but we've yet to notice any framerate problems so far.
Framerate issues are also being reported in relation to Star Fox 64 and Yoshi's Story, and Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are apparently suffering from some controller lag, although we have to say from our - admittedly short - time spent on the games in question, we haven't had a single noticeable framerate issue so far and the input lag... well, we haven't felt that as a notable problem.
In relation to the input lag reports, GameXplain has put out a video addressing the input lag issues which seems to confirm that it's minimal at worst. Our video team are also looking into it and the results suggest input lag in Mario 64, for example, is near identical to that of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
There's also a very obvious issue with reduced fog levels in some N64 games on Switch. Not so much a problem that's going to stop you enjoying the games, this is more of an aesthetic issue and, as you can see from our images below - with Wii U on the left and Switch on the right - the lack of fog is making for some rather fugly vistas in places. Wii U emulation had its own issues in this regard, so neither seems optimal.
We've also seen a few tweets regarding online performance, but these tweets have then been shot down by other players.
We'll leave you with a few tweets flagging up various issues as being reported by folk online and, as ever, make sure to let us know in the comments of any problems you've been encountering with the new line-up of games as you get stuck into them in the coming days.

and this for that price? absurd🤬
Now this is absolutely ridiculous. You pay that much money for dysfunctional games AND the lack of button remapping on to emulate a console that used one of the weirdest controllers ever made.
This is a dissapointing start, ngl. I hope Nintendo can quickly hammer out these issues
It’s funny.. back then we were like: too much fog!!!
Now we’re like: bring back the fog!!!
Shame about the control issues. Sin & Punishment was the draw here for me.
@Gwynbleidd
Frame rate problems on games that had BLAST PROCESSING? Now that just shows that Genesis does what Nintendon't.
This always looked like a high price low effort money grab and this proves it. Not good enough. A disgrace really.
Wow.
This service sounds super duper worth the extra $30 🥴
@Spiders
It's funny considering Ocarina of Time had a planned re-release on the N64 that would remove the fog thanks to the Expansion Pak, much like what was already done in Majora's Mask.
How does this compare with VC versions? (i.e. how likely is it to be fixed quickly?)
(edit: it is the same)
What's not to like about this brilliant service
I love not saving ghost data.
Haven’t noticed any input lag. Played Mario 64 17 stars speed run was great. Much better than Wii u.
I also have the og 64 plugged in with component cables for similar result.
Photo shows lines which are not there when you look in person
Dang, the Shadow Link room looks terrible without fog...
The controls are awful. I was trying to avoid buying the N64 controller but it looks like I'm being forced to.
Oh wow. Definitely not springing for that extra $30 now. Laughable.
So once again, Nintendo disappointing Switch owners.
A wise fat man said that piracy is a service problem, not a pricing problem.
$30 for N64 games is absurd, but maybe I would pay this if they did a better service than what pirates offer, emulating the games properly, without issues like missing textures and fog, had low input lag, had a good library with at least 75% of all official N64 games and all Nintendo games, had games based on a license of other media, and had more advantages not only over the original console, but non-official emulators, like trophies/achievements.
Legally, Nintendo has all the right to take down ROM websites and sue them, but morally, Nintendo is not in a position to complain about pirates when they offer a better service, another reason why copyright should go back to last for 50 years or even less.
I'm not necessarily in the hate camp, but this is kinda lame. I mean, most ports have QoL improvements, some can even be played online and whatnot, this should not be.
Okay I just want to say that the sin and punishment controls are not an issue at all. You can use d-pad to strafe, and you can use ZL to shoot (which doesn't remap the face buttons). If you suspend the game and check the controls you won't have an issue.
So 100% confirm my ass. I was having a blast with it last night
You conditioned Nintendo to expect high price for low effort, what did you expect?
And it not being the shindou version of mario 64 is not even a complaint. No one in the west had this version until all stars. And then everyone complained about it because they couldn't do certain glitches.
What a disaster
I’ve genuinely had no issues like that. This is the best N64 games have played since the original console and the upscaling is really really great.
And Mario Kart 64 has never made use of the controller pak in ANY virtual console release... seriously. This list makes me want to stop looking at this site. Never seen so much misinformation in my life
Nintendo has billions, not millions, in the bank. This really isn’t good enough.
@Scapetti VGC’s article on it is so much more balanced. This is just plainly shoddy journalism.
The reason people emulate is because you can control your experience much better. It's not jut about the price. If these games were perfect and immaculate on Switch, it would tempt me much more than what is currently on offer.
Not off to great start here.
Can you not remap the buttons at all? You could do it for Sin and Punishment on the Wii U VC at least, which makes the game so much more user-friendly to play.
Even if the emulation was good, pirates offer all 387 official N64 games, meanwhile this service only has 9, it will rise to 18, but then, they will release more games with a dropper, and many games based on a license like GoldenEye and WWF, will probably never come back.
That alone makes pirates offer a better service, even if it's also on a cheap emulator.
@nessisonett Agreed. While it’s goofy there’s no button mapping, the games are emulated about as well as I’ve ever seen. I continue to think NintendoLife is trying to cater to the people that feel the service is too expensive with their continued articles about the detriments of the expansion pass. It’s a shame, really. The service really isn’t THAT expensive when you consider how much Game Pass, Stadia, PSNow, etc costs. It’s still a value service in comparison, and it offers a marginally more consistent level of quality games with more excellent games on the way.
Also, just have to say, the games that I tried briefly last night held up so much better than I anticipated. Yoshi’s Story, in particular, has aged very gracefully.
As ever, piracy is a service problem.
Unofficial emulators let you fine-tune the experience, iron out issues yourself, remap controllers best you can, etc.
There are legitimate ways to emulate your games without illegally downloading ROMs too, though I'll admit that's uncommon.
Wait, they've mapped the N64's B and A buttons to the Switch's B and A buttons??? 🤮🤮🤮 And I thought trying to use an analogue stick for the c-buttons was as bad as it could get.
It should be using the Y and B buttons to match the N64's button orientation. I was thinking of maybe upgrading my subscription but this sounds so shoddy and half-arsed that I've lost all interest. While being able to play N64 games away from home would be nice, I'll just stick with using a real N64 at home.
@Scapetti As I said, it's not an actual problem, it's just a different version of the game.
@nessisonett I've reported issues being raised and where applicable I've even noted that we didn't experience them or that they weren't as bad as were being made out!
Nintendo wants to raise the price for a few 25 year old games and not fix online play or lag. Predictable and foreseeable.
All this can be temporarily yours for just an extra $30!
Boy, oh, boy...
Would swapping the analog sticks in the switch menu help with sin and punishment? Then you’d be aiming with the right stick and strafing with the left.
Darn, I was actually looking forward to this. Oh well, I can wait. These problems will probably be fixed soon.
EDIT: Actually considering this again, seems like a couple people here actually aren't having problems.
Nintendo probably thought that whoever would pay so much for so little would accept anything.
The only issue that I have seen that is legitimately awful is the Ocarina of Time Dark Link fight with the muddy water. Lack of fog is something I can live with, but completely messing up a ground texture in a boss fight room is atrocious.
Other than that, nothing looks particularly egregious. Of course, YMMV - for me, I'm not a speedrunner or pro gamer who is extremely sensitive to small amounts of input lag, and my WiFi works well enough where my online experiences on Switch are decent at worst.
Yeah, I was disappointed in the N64 software I tried last night but I refuse to purchase a N64 controller for it. I don't understand why they won't allow button remapping.
Got a free N64 from my girlfriend and picked up an ED64+ with the entire N64 library including romhacks. All for the $60 and it's all mine! No going online or worrying about frame rates or badly mapped controllers.
And you're paying how much to rent them? 😄
Only issue I see/have is the fog issue. Otherwise so far I have had very good experiences with what I have played (mario tennis, mario kart, mario 64, OoT and winback). They should fix the ghost data thing though.
And the fog is a very mild issue to me.
The games look crisp. Noticed the difference between the originals immediately.
@AG_Awesome you don't need to do that, because they've already mapped the right control stick for this game. So you can use the d-pad to strafe, the right stick to aim and ZR to shoot.
OR, you use the left stick to aim, ZL to shoot and X and Y to strafe.
These aren't lazy ports. They did actually care to make sure the control schemes work. But this is lazy journalism where they didn't bother to check this despite "100% confirming".
Feel kind of sad that there was no effort put into this. They could have at least tested it. Hope they at least fix it soon
Overpriced and underdeveloped? That's good old Nintendo!
@PJOReilly look into sin and punishment because your 100% confirmation is complete BS. The N64 didn't even have a ZR. ZR is intended to be used when you use the right control stick which is to simulate holding the n64 control stick with your right hand and the d-pad to strafe. If you use the left stick to aim you are meant to use ZL, as that's where the trigger would be on an N64 controller.
@Scapetti Nothing you said about the controls makes sense to me. I think you’re confused about what I’m saying. 🤷♂️
@Papichulo I mean yeah the service doesn't compete with stealing games. So far I'm happy with the service. I think everyone agrees Nintendo could do more. That's never really debated, but I think most of the hate is just people who like to be angry. I think a quiet majority of people are fine with this stuff. Also I feel like the ghost data stuff in Mario Kart has never worked on the Wii/Wii U versions either. But I could be wrong on that.
@AG_Awesome I'm saying that with sin and punishment the right control stick is mapped to the n64 control stick rather than the c-buttons. So you can use the right stick to aim and the d-pad to strafe. Just like the original release
Only played Mario Kart 64 and Mario Tennis so far and using the NSO wireless N64 controller and I've seen framerate drops in Mario Tennis a few times.
The music disappears in Mario Kart 64, but only when I accidentally pressed L, pressed it again and the music resumed... So is that a feature you can turn it off and on? (I don't ever remember it in the original!)
@Perryg92 yup, its normal
@Perryg92 Mario Tennis always had framerate drops and you could always turn off the music on Mario Kart 64 using the L button, yep!
@Scapetti But on the switch the right control stick is the c buttons and the left stick is the analog isn’t it? So going into the switch menu and just swapping the sticks means left stick now does movement (strafing) and right does aiming. Which is the control style most players are used to now thanks to TPS and FPS games.
Input lag is the killer for me. I purchased Mario Golf (N64 game) on the VC on my Wii, and no matter what controllers i used, the input lag was bad, and it made the game unplayable, as it's a 3-click control for the swing. Utterly ruined it.
FFS for this much money, can't they sort these issues out!!
This stinks and I think the price for admission is too high. With that said, people are complaining about a lack of fog? That’s silly. Fog was used due to a lack of draw distance. This was likely intentionally removed because who wants mysterious fog blocking the screen?
Oh yeah, button-mapping should definitely be added. That's a big miss as well.
@AG_Awesome well this is what I'm saying. The right control stick is NOT the c buttons for this game. Because Nintendo actually bothered to have different control schemes per game. But for some reason journalists are too lazy to check this so sin and punishment is actually fine and not broken. I was having a blast with it last night
So not only is this expansion overpriced for the little content we get, it also hasn't even been tested properly? They have a QA department right?
I will now definitely wait until Nintendo adds enough valuable content so that it is actually worth the price.
@Spiders Back then we thought the 3D models were amazing and we were annoyed the fog covered them up. Now the 3D models have aged like milk and the fog has become more of a beauty filter on them. Kind of like the CRT scanlines in NES games. Or when old comic books get reprinted on good quality paper and the coloring looks garish (as it was made for cheap grayish paper).
@AlmightyDerek Piracy is not stealing, if you make something, and I take it away without your consent, I stole it, you don't have it anymore, but if you make something, and I make an exact copy of it, nothing was stolen from you, you still have the original.
@Clyde_Radcliffe @Bustacap Cheers for clarifying!
Would have checked Mario Tennis on my actual N64, but couldn't find the RF cable.
And Nintendo wants us to pay $50 a year for this? Are they actually insane?
Are you kidding me? The fog was annoying, and now it's gone hahaha. Why is that a bad thing? Games look great by the way.
@Scapetti OK, mate, with a tone like that you can go have a nice day, I'm done talking to you.
They should've just made an N64 Classic mini with a wired controller.
@OstianOwl : Yes, but the customers arguably more so.
@PJOReilly I don't understand the Sin & Punishment complaint, which is one of the games you do say you have played. Holding down shoot remaps the c-buttons to the Switch's face buttons, so you absolutely can strafe right and shoot at the same time - in fact, it might even make the strafing easier because it more closely replicates the original's controls. What you can't do is shoot and change cursor at the same time, which is a far more minor issue.
@Edu23XWiiU Because even though the fog was annoying, we want to play the games like they used to be.
And removing the fog, without making the draw distance longer, won't solve anything, short draw distance is the reason these games had so much fog.
Plus, there are games where fog was actually an important part of how the games worked, that scene in Zelda requires fog, it is part of the atmosphere of the game, Silent Hill is not on this service, but it's a great example of a game making good use of fog, using it to make the game scarier.
Sad to read all this hate and bashing. I won’t add to any of it. Instead I’m posting that I’m waiting for my N64 controller to arrive to start these and give them a fair first chance and then I’ll maybe come back and update my post here.
What I’m reading has me setting low expectations though which could work in my favor. I’m not happy to read about the fog and weird upscaling stuff because I like the pure N64 experience but I am happy to read some saying these are some of the best ports and N64 emulation ever. We’ll see!
This was the easiest job in the world and they still messed it up.
I thought I was taking crazy pills. The button mapping for Star Fox 64 makes no sense and isn’t explained at all. They haven’t even bothered to include scans of the manuals :
@PJOReilly forget the tone, I only said "BS". It's not that bad. Just make sure your journalism is "100%" accurate dude
I played Ocarina of Time for a few hours last night and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary while playing. The game itself actually looked better than I remember. The only thing I struggled with was getting used to the controls. Didn't take long though!
@riccyjay yeah you can, because shoot is mapped to ZL
more proff NSO expansion pack is a scam
I love how one of the viral "NSO N64 emulation sucks" Tweets is of someone blaming Nintendo for a terrible PowerPoint-esque Mario Kart 64 online multiplayer experience...even though he had 0 out of 4 bars of WiFi.
I don't know what's worse, Nintendo thinking they can offer sub par services for the money or the fans that defend them as if they're an indie company that will go out if business if people don't buy this.
100% Unexpectable! I honestly hope this fails.
@Scapetti and you can just use the a-button to strafe right. There's about three reasons why it's not an issue.
Removed - trolling
After seeing the ***** storm on social media over how terrible the emulation is, I'm feeling better about refusing to upgrade immediately.
I can't say I didn't expect problems, although I was surprised by just how many. Maybe I shouldn't have been because anyone familiar with the emulation scene knows N64 emulation is still inconsistent after all these years. I guess I just expected more from one of the biggest media companies on the planet. Silly me!
@Scapetti Oh yeah, good point. So you can do everything!
I will admit, it's a bit awkward if you're switching between the schemes, but definitely the claim that you can't strafe right and shoot is demostrably untrue.
@Moistnado and they were certainly right with their assumption.
I'm glad i have subscribed Normal NSO by $20 just for online play.
Not interested with N64 & Genesis games.
So glad I didn't pay for this
@victordamazio If you want to play the games the way they used to be, you can still plug in a N64, but it'll look ugly as hell on an HD TV. I see the lack of fog as an improvement, and games look great.
Well, I'm glad I didn't go through with this purchase. How does Nintendo even release this stuff in this condition? It's pretty unacceptable.
@AlmightyDerek it's not actually stealing though.
And then to think people want GC games on NSO..
At least these games don't have the muddy, dark colors of the Wii U Virtual Console. Looks a lot more vibrant, I think.
Hope they patch these issues. I played some Mario Kart and Yoshi without an issue, but these are still issues that should be fixed.
I'll admit that the button mapping looks awkward as hell, but do the other "problems" really mean so much?
That's strange, I played some of the games last night and haven't noticed any of these issues. In fact they played pretty much flawlessly.
Aside from one issue which is the weird button mapping.
Other than that to me it's working fine.
@victordamazio It's possible stealing isn't the most accurate word, but I feel like my point still stands. Nintendo's service, no matter how good, isn't going to compete with piracy of their intellectual property.
Come on, button mapping issues, really?? It's literally the one simple thing you would expect to be right. the rest I can live without. As it's emulated you're going to get input lag that's fact.
Nintendo once again giving the fans their money's worth....
Glad I didn’t pay for this, then. The selection of NES games and SNES games can be laughable sometimes, but at least the function really, really well (in my experience). This is just embarrassing, especially at this price point.
No issues here at all. Games look great and run fine. The S&P comments are ridiculous btw. I played the entire game multiple times on Wii without issue.
@Scapetti Understood. I didn’t pick it up yet to see that, however I’m glad to hear they did right by it rather than having us need to go into system settings. Love that game!
I did notice the lack of music on Mario Kart 64.
But I restarted it and it came back. Sure it can be improved without having these issues.
And I wish they add remaping in the future. Playing DR Mario with the buttons and not be able to play with the stick its weird.
I think Ocarina of Time looks great. I just bought my shield so I am not far in but I am liking how it looks so far.
I'm waiting for more content to be added before i even think about paying for this extra service.
@riccyjay I love how PJ just said he's done with me rather than acknowledging the mistake. Like, he will comment on the other stuff and defend himself but if it comes to acknowledging a mistake nope. Gets angry because I said "BS". Like... was what I said really that bad? Does it really matter the manner in which it is delivered? Gee whizz... why is everyone so afraid of saying "sorry, I was wrong, I will correct that"
@AG_Awesome yeah they did a really good job with the controls for this game I think! Glad they didn't just do a one size fits all with the controls
Sounds to me like the Wii VC is the best of both worlds, least input lag of them all, only has the dark colors on a few of the games (4 out of 21), minus the pause screen crackle in oot it sounds all-around correct.
Not having the suspend point for Majora's Mask sucks, though you could argue it's better this way anyway.
@AlienX it has suspend points
@Scapetti I'm talking about Wii VC.
I've dabbed on a little N64 emulation using Retropie on a RPi 3B and though its not really comparable to the Switch in specs, I remember reading somewhere that emulating the untouched ROMs would really present a challenge to modern day hardware specifically SoCs. I think it has something to do with the differences in terms of the devices design architecture.
@luxoricious You just have to press L to toggle the music on/off/quiet. Mario Kart 64 has always had that feature.
Maybe Nintendo should hire the pirates to properly emulate their games instead of suing them all the time
This is embarrassing....
@AlienX oh I see, my bad. So much misinformation about this new NSO service. I assume everyone's spreading it D:
This is why I did not upgrade to the service from the beginning. Even modern day emulators still had issue with N64 emulation, Nintendo is no different. Though graphical errors and stuff are fix, now we got sound and input lags. Should had just rehire M2 to do a Virtual Console lineup instead, this emulation offerings are garbage and isn't worth the sub. Instead of giving us Game Boy, GBC, and GBA games which are easy to emulate, they choose N64 which is difficult to emulate, hopefully they find a solution soon or else their subscribers will have second thoughts.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-01-22-mario-kart-64-doesnt-have-ghost-data-on-wii-u
So this has been a known issue, FOREVER.
Sounds like some hiccups to be hopefully addressed down the road indeed (when you filter the stuff immediately jossed by the experience of commenters like @Scapetti in this very section), but it's kinda hilarious that LESS fog in a Gen 5 game would become a problem for modern gamers.😄
@Scapetti It's not a good look.
I could understand if you'd said: "BS! It's mapped to blahblahblah". But calling something factually false 'BS' is not, as far as I'm aware, offensive or insulting.
The article really does need changed though, because currently it contains information that is categorically not true.
@Nookingtons If there was input lag on my original N64, it's so unnoticeable that it simply doesn't matter to the average player. The Switch N64 games have a lot of noticeable input lag.
And also, this is when playing with the Switch Lite or handheld mode - nothing to do with the tiny amount of input lag you get when you use a controller.
Play OoT in handheld mode and I can guarantee you'll notice it.
How many N64 games are they adding each month? Will they iron out the issues or just dump them out there?
Vote with your wallet folks
@riccyjay Yes! You're right. I had a very brief go to try to understand the problem as pointed out in Eurogamer article but have gone back and the strafe works fine on d-pad when shooting. Article is being updated as we speak. My humblest apologies.
Like always, the comments are all over the place 😂
I don't know how prevalent or problematic some of these issues are. For some, it seems to be a real problem. For others, it isn't or haven't encountered any. But the most important thing is that these people actually are playing these games (or at least the NSO versions of these games) and giving us informed thoughts about it.
I also wish some commenters, who seem to be enraged about the service, would just be honest about how they were never gonna upgrade to this, no matter how good or how much value its perceived to have.
Wow! Overpriced and broken! This just keeps getting better and better. Thanks Nintendo
And they’ll still take down emulators and rom sites then try to push their crummy alternatives. I’m so done with this company. Lest we get a new wario land, Kirby and the forgotten lands will be the last first party product I’ll likely ever buy from Nintendo, and even then it’s HAL doing it
@PJOReilly all I could ask for! Apologies for the tone. It was the "100%" thing that irked me most of all. I guess "categorically untrue" is a little nicer than saying it's BS but that's all I meant by it haha. I wasn't trying to be mean or offensive. I was just miffed myself
@Scapetti It's fine. Sometimes we're in a right rush getting stuff out. I had a very, very quick go with S&P to confirm that the issue I'd read about was real. It was. However, I didn't take the time to try out the D-Pad for strafing. All good now and article is being amended.
Sin and Punishment sounds like my first marriage, she sinned and I was punished.
I was in the "Eh, maybe on payday" camp. Now I'm in the "Should probably wait for them to fix some of these issues. I don't even play Animal Crossing anymore" camp.
So far I’ve played OOT -1hr no problems
Sin & Punishment - 30 minutes no problems
Golden Axe - 22 minutes no problem
Castlevania Bloodlines 30 minutes no problem
Musha - about 15 minutes no problems
Yoshis story. 10 minutes. No problems
Winback 8 minutes The C button mapping is going to be a real problem for this one until you get a n64 controller official or from a different company
There will still be Nintendo fan boys supporting this and defending them and thats why Nintendo will never learn and stay decades behind other companies. Even the fans need to call them out on their BS and they wont.
@PJOReilly Not at all. One thing to add, by the way, is it's not just the d-pad, holding ZR remaps strafe L/R from Y and X respectively to Y and A on the face buttons.
It is, for sure, awkward to switch between them, but to be fair, you're barely ever not holding down fire in Sin & Punishment anyway.
@PJOReilly just seen the update. I still think it's incorrect honestly. It still forgets to mention that ZL can be used to shoot.
The idea behind it is that if you use the left stick to aim you use the ZL button and if you use the right stick to aim you use the ZR button. This is how it would be on the n64 controller as you could never otherwise use the trigger. ZR is simply not meant to be used when you use the left stick to aim. The N64 controller doesn't even have ZR. It's an extra mapping for convenience so should be seen as a benefit rather than a hinderance.
C button mapping from the depths of hell.
@earthinheritor Do you want everyone to write them a letter?
@GamingBread There are objectively some issues here - it's just about how much they'll bother you. Input lag is the biggest one. It's noticeable to most people (i.e. not just speed runners). Hitting jump and not having your character jump immediately is a problem, but you can get used to it. It feels like it does when your TV isn't set to 'game' mode, or like playing a game on most retro emulation handheld consoles (they generally just have this issue).
The problem here is that Nintendo published these games, and are charging a considerable amount of money for them. You'd expect them to be the definitive way to play, but in reality, Banjo Kazooie's going to end up working better on all the other ways of playing it (Xbox, emulator, N64).
The childish sense of entitlement gamers have is enough to make me pay 30$ bones for this even though I’d use it for about 15 minutes.
@BlueMonk I'd say you're entitled to a quality service when you've just paid good money for it. Nothing childish about it.
I upgraded last night and had immediate buyer’s remorse. I didn’t notice any performance issues, but I basically upgraded mostly to be able to play Mario Kart 64 online. It was probably stated to the contrary somewhere, and I’m assuming I just didn’t do enough research, but I was expecting some kind of matchmaking service for the game where you could jump on and play with random people online. Unless I’m missing it, that doesn’t appear to be the case as it seems to be a friend invite system only. I guess Im stuck with it for a year now, but I’ll probably just go back to the regular package next year.
Oh my...
Anyhoot, back to preparing my island for that Animal Crossing update.
@BlueMonk How dare people expect the service they have to pay extra for to be good! What a baffling and foreign concept. It's not like we as the consumer have the right to voice our concerns over a product.
good grief, nintendo gamers are really the most naive and loyal to their own detriment group of consumers on earth
Also, the primary member has to be the one to upgrade and the other family members cannot...clearly this was rushed
Nintendo's laziness combined with their greed is always astounding.
They charge an absurd amount and can't even be bothered to test games before launch or offer the ability to remap buttons? What?
@Nookingtons I'm not a speedrunner and I noticed Ocarina of Time on Switch has no fog in most cases where it should be such as the Dark Link room. The water texture is also weird as well in there. The input lag is noticable in handheld mode too. It's also easy to have that low of hearts in the game like that screenshot because you can just leave after beating a boss without grabbing the heart. It actually makes Dark Link easier when you have less health. I have played the game with only three hearts before, not speedrunning it since I'm not that good so it was hard. Just saying. Nintendo does need to fix their emulation settings for games. Frame drops are common too.
@oconnoclast There's different mapping in different games, c buttons aren't mapped to the right stick in sin and punishment.
I've been having a blast with the N64 games all day, mostly games I've not played since the 90s or not played at all (Sin and Punishment, Dr Mario 64) Glad I'm able to just enjoy playing games instead of spending my time on ridiculous nit-picking... if doing the latter makes you a "hardcore gamer" then count me out.
As the OLED screen is prone to burn in, why is there a permanent border and HUD on these games, found this with the older Final Fantasy titles - why not an option to turn this off
Just map the c buttons to the right stick like a normal person. I'm not surprised though.
@riccyjay It is a little awkward, but for people that are that bothered, they can buy the controller. It's not too expensive.
Nintendo needs a wakeup call, and fast. This is not acceptable, especially for the money they're asking for
@earthinheritor How is Nintendo way behind other companies? The gaming industry is not about how powerful your hardware is or how much you kiss your customer's behind, it's about making bucks and Nintendo is way up there when it comes to profits. Remember that what you said and what everybody want makes too much sense and the videogame industry is not about making sense, it's about making money.
@faint So... In summary...
Charging like $20-$30 extra for this kind of quality is very disappointing, Nintendo.
Tested more games. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones with no issues
@Specter_of-the_OLED I think he mean from the consumer's perspective, which, unless you work for Nintendo or are a shareholder in the company or something, is the position you should be coming from too.
@1UP_MARIO If you start each game with the konami code, you'll be issue-free. IYKYK.
I haven't played N64 NSO and unless they give me a free trial I won't, but these are the sorts of thing I probably wouldn't notice. And sometimes I wonder if the average player would notice if others didn't make a big deal about it.
That two frames of input lag that amounts to less than a tenth of a second? I honestly find it hard to believe anyone noticed without someone actively seeking it out. But maybe that's me. I can barely tell the difference between higher frame rates.
The only thing that would bother me is the graphical changes in Ocarina.
Input lag is likely a side effect of the emulator having to process and translate the modern controller inputs. Most average players probably wont even notice the difference
Its been fairly common for Nintendo to disable controller pak functionality in their N64 re releases
Graphical issues were to be expected considering how much of a pain in the ass Nintendo 64 games can be to emulate especially on a system like Switch although there is the chance they could be fixed in an update
Remember a lot of games back then were often designed in such a way so that any imperfections would be masked by the CRT display
All the people touting rom emulation (and I've got no massive problem with emulation of decades old games), can you honestly describe a system cheaper than a Switch that emulates N64 well? Even a homebrew switch wasn't emulating N64 well.
Not good……and can’t these be full screen? I understand it’s n64 online but why not use the wii u versions where games have been updated like ocarina. It’s still an n64 game. We have to wait until the wii U online for ocarina hd? The 3ds looks better than this. Ridiculous.
@riccyjay Cool. In summation, it's not really an issue then. Good news!
Lol what a mess. The worst part is knowing that Nintendo knew these problems would show up and they put it live anyway, despite the already heavy criticism over the pricing. It's like they want to push people away from the service.
How can this even happen in 2021 for N64 emulation, which is on point since at least 15 years? lame
My phone can play all those with none of the problems...yikes.
Thought it was a disgusting price to begin with and that was assuming 20+ year old games would run well...
I came here to be outraged about that OoT water temple comparison... but then I realized the 3rd screenshot is from the Japanese version of the game, which was an earlier release that had different textures in that room. It always looked like that. Comparing non-Japanese screenshots to it is outright misleading.
This is infuriating because wanting these games to be well-preserved is such a natural instinct for us. Games are a visual medium so if the visuals are even slightly off, they're compromised. And there's no excuse for missing content like the Mario Kart ghost data. BUT so much of this outrage comes from people not even understanding the games they're talking about. Like turning music on/off in Mario Kart.
NintendoLife or Stop Skeletons From FIghting need day 1 content about these emulators, so they compile screenshots from speedrunners who are the only ones playing that deep into games on day 1, and then present those screenshots in misleading ways because they don't understand speedrunning or version differences and it fuels a whole outrage cycle. This is so stupid.
SEGA Genesis Classics for Nintendo Switch had loads of input lag that you didn't seem to mind when giving it a positive review. Didn't even get a mention
@Nookingtons exactly. These games are playing as intended and no different than they did on the N64. They seriously need people that know what their talking about and have played the originals to be the ones giving reviews not some hacks that know nothing about older systems.
@UglyCasanova except they all have those problems in the n64 so your not playing the actual game on your phone and phones are literally crap for gaming.
@SwitchVogel that’s because they didn’t change the games from their original forms, they just improved the graphics and colors some. Keeping it original is what the whole point of their online services are for.
@Nookingtons N64 had framerate issues but none of the input lag that is experienced via emulation.
It's shocking how far Nintendo's online service has collapsed since Switch. Wii U had so many awesome online experiences, from Miiverse, posting to YouTube and social media to online chat. Switch is a disgrace.
I've watched the emulation and its horrific, online lag and everything. The only bonus being they haven't implemented the dark filter they had on Wii U VC. However even it could be removed and games installed properly via homebrew.
High time Nintendo went 3rd party. Metroid, Zelda, Mario et all would be far better on Xbox.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Silly_G Hm, touché.
@liveswired the emulation is better on the switch. There was more lag on the Wii u emulator. And yes when talking about homebrew on the Wii u, same can be said about the switch.
@sleepinglion according to @Dirty0814 @Nookingtons these are how the games looked and played on their original systems. Pretty clear these fanboys are willing to defend Nintendos disgusting emulation and service to the death and have no experience of retro games on their original systems.
@1UP_MARIO it's far worse on Switch. Nintendo online is a total shambles.
With Sin and Punishment, just use the left trigger
I've played 4 games so far.
Every single one has been fantastic. There is no "lag". I have no idea what ppl are talking about. I specifically fired up Mario 64 this morning to test, and no, there's no lag.
The only legitimate complaints I've seen is one particular area in one particular game doesn't have fog (and tbh I couldn't care less one way or the other about that) and ghost data in Mario Kart. Which ok, fair enough on that. Still, thats a minor quibble.
So ya. I'm just here to say I have personally played Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Yoshi's Story and Sin and Punishment, and no, there is no lag. The games are perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Also, Sin and Punishment controls incredibly well. Use the LEFT DPAD to move and dodge, RIGHT ANALOG to aim, and ZR to shoot. Not that hard. It works flawlessly.
@Nookingtons Games didn't use rtx back then. It didn't even become a thing until 2019 when they announced it. Reflections were simple back then and sometimes just had the same character model there to simulate a reflection in the mirror or water. Mario 64 was notorious for this effect in the mirror room. Games using actual "reflections" happened later on than these early n64 titles. The texture in the Dark Link room though? It's just not displaying right, hence the water looking weird.
How is Sin & Punishment's mapping a "control issue"? O.o
It now plays like a modern shooter, just that you move with the D-Pad (since you only move left/right anyways).
I fail to see an issue here...
Heads up! N64 controllers back in stock, I just purchased one.
There's abject misery on this site and then there's @liveswired. One day he'll post something full of wit and humour and positivity. Until then...
I'm starting to think that when everyone said "just port the games and we will give you money" Nintendo took that at face value...
@ModdedInkling No it didn't plan to re-release OOT with exp support. Fog was only used in OOT for effect - distance fogging (as is seen on distant mountains), representing the smoke and haze inside a volcano, in that room in the Water temple, the gloomy dungeons that required it. Why the would Nintendo remove effects that were part of the experience and art direction? Fog actually has a 30% performance hit in N64 games. Developers always had a choice, many liked to use it so they could cut back the level draw distance eg Turok.
All for the low, low price of more than double the base subscription!
The games that need work are the non-NTSC versions, because almost all of them are borderline unplayable. Switched to US versions against my better judgement (grew up with PAL, thought it was superior for some... reason) and found they run smooth as butter. So much so that I decided to pull an all-nighter, and not five minutes ago finished OOT 100% for the first time in about 6 years in 13.5 hours!
@liveswired I can agree NSO online is not priced well although since it’s launch I must have paid around under 30 pounds for what now 4 years. What’s worse the emulation because I have 64 games on my Wii and Wii u and switch and in my experience, emulation on switch is better
@WiltonRoots yes because Nintendo responds to optimism, like heck they do, Nintendo never respond unless there is a sufficient backlash.
If we don't complain now they will never fix their pathetic service and emulation that isn't up to standard.
yiiiiikes. how do they make this service so easy to hate
@liveswired Well they certainly won't respond to you in here, it's like being angry at clouds...you might as well tell the milkman.
@NEStalgia It's £0.01 per game, per day, without the huge string of numbers that carry on ad infinitum. If you have a lot of games in the selection you wanna play and you don't want to emulate for a sub-optimal experience, it's a bargain, but that's only if the library has enough to offer each individual person. For me, I've got roughly... 40 games I wanna play from NES, SNES and Genesis, and the N64 titles are all basically must haves for me, so the price works out. I take it from your comment that there aren't that many games that personally appeal?
I've only played Ocarina of Time so far. It's feels pretty much flawless. I am looking forward to getting my NSO N64 controller, as N64 games are best played with the controller they were designed for.
@RupeeClock Yeah I ripped Harvest Moon Animal Parade to play for myself. My own copy of the game 🤷♀️
Seems like a mixed bag. If could get my hands on an N64 controller I might have considered getting it on launch day.
@Purgatorium
It just depends on how bad it is.
In the Sega Genesis Collection, I can’t play the sonic titles. There’s too much input lag. I have muscle memory from the 90s for classic sonic. I can adjust to the usual levels of input lag emulation causes, but those were so bad that it was nigh unplayable for me.
I’m not getting the expansion pack right now. I don’t think it’s a good deal. But I would like to see if the Genesis games offered have less input lag than the Collection titles did.
@Shiiva NES and SNES are irrelevant as they're in the base subscription that also includes mandatory fee for online play in current games and cloud saves. This is more than double the same price for mediocre N64 emulation plus Sega Genesis/Megadrive games that are mostly already available in a permanent to own package for less money than one year of the expansion pass.
Comparing the per-game-per-month cost is a self-defeating argument. If we're really going to compare the price per interesting game to justify it, Game Pass, and even more, PS Now blows this out of the water, out of the sky, and out of orbit in terms of price-per-game-per-month value.
That seems like a lot of money for a bunch of broken games. I must be getting stingy in my old age as I just don't see the value. Oh well, crazy me.
@victordamazio Great point and I agree. If these were the best versions of these games — with some added QoL features like save states, great CRT emulation options, etc., $30/yr would be a steal.
... and it’s not like the emulation scene hasn’t done the homework already.
Pizza pockets and Dr. Pepper
@Yorumi
All I know is, Sega Genesis Classics Collection has input lag. When I hit jump, there's a delay, then Sonic jumps. In Mario 64, when I hit jump, there's an immediate response. It feels no different than any other game I've played with normal response times.
So ppl are free to say what they want, all I know is, the games I've played thus far feel identical to every other modern game I own.
Didn't have a problem with the N64 MarioKart sountrack. Maybe they're pressing L to turn it on and off.
@TheRedComet
Can confirm these games are nothing like the Sega Genesis Collection.
I literally tried the collection 3 days ago one last time, and there's massive lag. When I press jump, there's a delay, then Sonic jumps.
In these games, I press jump, and Mario instantly jumps.
So ya, I'll leave the arguing about it to others. All I know is, of the 4 games I've tried thus far, all of them felt perfectly normal and as you'd expect them to feel. Night and day from the Genesis collection.
Haven't experienced any problems with frame rate or input lag. I was impressed by the input being better on the Genesis games than the collection.
@swoose wow really? Okay... so basically there's no merit to any of these faults. That water temple one was the only one that seemed like it had some substance. I mean the controller pak issue is one too but at least it was the same on the virtual console and even on the n64 you couldn't have both rumble and a controller pak
@Clyde_Radcliffe OMG you're absolutely right! Never knew that. Guess I was trying to figure out the controls, pushed L and never realized that was what made the music stop. Thank you so much!
@nessisonett Well compared to you, there seem too be conflicting reports from other people, I hope more people notice how low effort this is even for the price point. We don't deserve this shoddy mess especially for how much they're expecting us to pay. Pathetic.
@Specter_of-the_OLED It isn't about the hardware, its the policies and background tech. Nintendo has proven that hardware isnt the only metric. The Switch is the least powerful system but tis clearly selling insanely well, i love mine.
The issue is their social media presents, operational policies everything in the background people ignore.
Like the insane Youtube policy that punished fans for liking their games that they had to reverse because of massive backlash and bad press.
Price locking 1st party games that literally no other developer has done for more than a decade.
This entire N64 thing where they clearly put little to no effort into it and charge far more than they should have, an thats pretty obvious looking at their social media feed backlash and news sites.
Social media where Xbox and Sony both listen to users and try to solve issues based on feedback but Nintendo just pretends those issues dont exist.
Refusing to admit the massive drift issues despite the fact its a very well published issues. I barely use my switch in hand held, i use a pro controller yet my joycons are drifting.
Shutting down all fan games that dont hurt Nintendo at all. But it was fans that made Sonic Mania and that was the best sonic game in many years. As long as the fan games arent making money it hurts no one and can actually grow to become real games that Nintendo could invest in.
So it isn't hardware, its internal policy that's the issue. They are so scared of working with outside devs on new games but games like Rabbids proved how well that can actually work but they are still stubborn.
@faint No, i want Nintendo to pay attention to the consumer like Sony and Microsoft do. Because thats what a modern company does. Not the small dumb complaints but the legit feedback and concerns like joycon drift.
Removed - unconstructive
@SmaggTheSmug Great point! Emulating games always has that problem of thinking it can divorce the content from the medium.
Music has the same problem, in that because there is sheet music — the “binary” of the content, we think you can replicate it. We’ll never really know what Beethoven or Bach sounded like because the instruments are made completely different than their modern counterparts.
It’s also a category error. To stay in music... people assume the electric guitar is the instrument that you plug into the amp, but the instrument is truly the entire guitar-amp-speaker circuit, and the amp has way more to do with the timbre and voicing of the instrument than the guitar part does (as proven by modern amp modelers).
So what resolution are these games being rendered at? I thought removing the fog and increasing draw distance would be a plus...
@Yorumi
That very well may be.
All I know is the games play fine when I play them.
@earthinheritor Sony and Microsoft pay attention to the consumer? Since when?
@JaxonH same here. No problems yet
@arekdougy Yeah you can turn off the music with the L button. People who played the OG Kart 64 knows this
Honestly it feels like most of these complaints are complaining just for the sake of complaining and adding fuel to the fire.
It's a complete disaster. There is no way I'm touching a single game with the A button (down) mapped to the Switch's A button (right) and the B button (left) mapped to the Switch's B (down). That is utterly ridiculous, a complete non-starter.
The only people interested in playing N64 games are the people with muscle memory of where the N64 buttons are on a control pad.
Even crazier is the fact that Nintendo GOT THIS RIGHT 18 months ago with Mario 64 on the 3D All Stars. Yet they've somehow got it wrong now?
YOU NEED TO MAP THE BUTTON ON THE BOTTOM TO THE BUTTON ON THE BOTTOM NINTENDO.
I'm anxiously awaiting my N64 pad to arrive in the mail, that should fix the problem in docked mode but the entire handheld proposition is out the window now...
@liljmoore that’s the vibe I’m getting
@liljmoore that’s true but internet is gonna internet.
So I bought this Expansion Pass this morning and now I really wish I had waited until they added more games or until they fixed some of the issues described here. Between the price and these issues, Nintendo really dropped the ball on this one.
How’s the Sega games…..especially the ones with 2 player online?
I haven’t subscribed yet, but I may at some point in the future (maybe for Banjo Kazooie). The button mapping sounds like the only issue that would bother me. I like that I can remap buttons on the Wii U virtual console.
It seems like Nintendo optimizes their default mappings for the on screen prompts making sense to newcomers. However they should have at the very least an option to switch to a position based mapping (and really just allow full remapping).
I noticed pretty bad input lag in Super Mario 3D all Stars when it was on the TV. I could only play it portable.
Ahhhh this is why a N64 mini never came out they must have been holding off for the price hike.
Sega mega drive classics game for switch is better than the expansion.
In a way i wish nintendo had just stuck with nintendo and do N64 , gameboy advance and gameboy.
With the huge price they should bring gamegear, saturn and dreamcast as well.
@liljmoore I agree. I understand the price complaints, but a lot of this seems like complaining without actually reading the details or experiencing it.
@liveswired You're right. Growing up and playing Sonic on an actual Genesis, if I pressed jump, he instantly jumped. Kind of important for a fast-paced title. But on the Switch compilation, not so much. Push jump, there's a pause, then a jump. It's what you get when none of these reviewers are over 30
What, did the folks who somehow thought the "expansion" was a good deal also think it would come with any sort of measurable improvements over the shoddy features and support that aren't just a hallmark of SO, but Nintendo's entire history with online functionality? Say it ain't so!
But hey, I hear the next Expansion tier will offer all of that 2020s functionality, and it can be yours for the low, low price of $129.99 per year. Nintendo may even throw in a dozen or so GameCube and TurboGrafx games to boot. They were going to ask $149.99 but Redd convinced them to give their loyal consumers a cousin's discount.
And yes, although this is totally a joke, we all know there are plenty of people who would immediately say, "Shut up and take my money".
An issue I've noticed is that any 3rd Party Controller seems to have the rumble constantly active when playing N64.
My brother uses a third party controller which has the issue and when I tried to play using my Retro Bit Wireless Tribute64 controller, it has the same issue. (Plus because the lack of remapping the controller is awkward to use anyway.)
So Yeah... Don't bother using 3rd party controllers with the rumble turned on.
Well definitely not missing on anything nintendo definitely drop the ball in this one making people pay for upgrade and it doesn't work not worth money at all until they fix these bugs.
Thats...odd. I played it for quite a bit online with my bud on some games and didn't notice much difference. Did forget how floaty MK64 is though. I experienced less framerate on starfox 64 as well. usually a smart bomb tanked the framerate and it just didn't happen for me.
still. i have 8 people on my family plan, they're all having fun with it. can't complain too much if they're enjoying themselves but doesn't make issues any less of an issue. some should be fixed.
edit: i do agree on the control mapping though. in starfox 64, ZL to lean left an R to lean right is...well thats annoying.
That's what happens when you put Bowser to be the president
There's a ton of complaints here about the controls, even the article mentions it, but if you just hit the Home button you can change the button settings system-wide so long as you use either joycons or a Pro controller. It would have been nice to have it in the app but it's really not the big deal people are making it out to be.
It looks like two completely different companies....
The one who delayed the release date from December to Spring for Advance Wars to make some small adjustments to the game, and the company responsible for allowing these broken N64 titles onto
gamers.
Hold up let me get out my wallet. Oh geez, I lost it.
Nintendo knew what they were doing when they didn’t offer a monthly option for this.
according's pirates, both (n64 + mega drive) system are running smoothly.
@Nookingtons I don't know of any modern Bluetooth protocol which introduces the kind of latency that would affect anything. Let alone be noticeable in a 30 fps N64 game.
they absolutely whipped this up over a weekend. Needed those subscribers. Maybe they'll fix it in like a year. Complete waste of money, and definitely in the top 3 nintendo rip-offs of the switch era
Money for old rope, is what comes to mind. I really enjoy my Switch Lite, play way more on Switch than my PS4 these days and I'm very much into retro gaming, but this is just not worth the money to me.
I'm all about my ACNH dlc, so gimme my extra
Looks like I'm now waiting. I guess SNES streaming online instead :/
i wonder what fixes or issues that the new N64 controller will bring once i get my hands on it. i wonder if it will be compatible with super smash bros ultimate, Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario Odyssey.
How's the N64 controller working out for people? It's tough emulating N64 games because the controller is so unique and I hesitate to get the new Nintendo one because I just don't trust them with porting hardware or straight-up making controllers at this point.
Yeah and their pricing needs work too.
@Spiders
No one will ever get Genesis music sounding right.
It’s hardware, while made from off the shelf components (the Yamaha synthesizer was basically a stripped down version of the FM synthesizer used in their keyboards in the 80s) had some really weird programming quirks. To this day, emulators struggle to output Genesis sound fonts the way they were intended to sound.
They’ve gotten alot closer, but I can usually spot the differences.
So not only is the pricing very….I’ll be kind and say optimistic, but they haven’t even done a good job getting 25-year-old games to run properly.
Not good Nintendo, not good at all.
Lots of whiners in these comments, trying to justify not plunking down for the expansion pack. I’ve been sampling all the N64 games over the past few hours. They look and play great! And this is coming from someone who grew up with the N64 and bought many many Virtual Console N64 offerings on multiple consoles.
@mereel
That's what I was thinking. Am I missing something? It is $49 for a year (here in the U.S. anyway). That works out to $4 per month. There are a lot of games on there between the now 4 systems represented so far. I have no problem with it. Oh well
I'm not sure I'll be okay without the fog, it really sets the scenery in the lost woods and the village.
I'm still impressed Nintendo were able to get N64 games running on an ARM-based chip. These games even give my Ryzen 5 with GTX1660 graphics a hard time, so I'm not surprised about issues.
@victordamazio That's pretty much how I feel. I'd happily pay Nintendo if they offered at least equal, if not better, service than what you can get going the regular old emulation route.
@Darknyht you answered your own question. Nintendo won't allow button remapping because they want you to buy their overpriced controller.
It's kind of baffling that they release it in this state for this price. Not happy.
I wanna laugh, but instead just feel sorry for anyone who paid for this.
@WiltonRoots lol, it doesn't matter. But we cannot have a legion of fanboys who defend Nintendo at every turn.
Seriously some of the issues are downright outrageous for a paid service.
I hope they scrap the Idea and start selling Cartridges with two nintendo 64 games loaded in 'em.
For now, it'll do, and hopefully they can get the kinks out before doing so. That'll require money so I may as well support them for less then the Scalper's prices.
@liveswired Me personally I'm never an early adopter to these things...much the same as most software updates I sit and watch and see what unfolds. I was going to chip in with some people to get it cheaper - do you have their original online package by the way?
How many ways you wanna play in original hardware
Do it!!! Do it now!!!! Vote with your big wallet you just got after finding however many gold skulltulas you needed to find. Stick it to the happy mask salesman and the horse you rode in on.
And you think Nintendo will listen and act? Don’t be silly. They are making too much money right now to worry about anything as trivial as the consumer.
nintendo : minimum effort, maximum price.
These articles that have a hot take headline and then rely on second-hand twitter experiences for evidence kind of suck. Also some of your personal experience that you report on in the article invalidates what you read on Twitter. That's some sucky journalism right there
@NeonPizza
You're not hearing what I'm saying. Every game has literal latency as electrical inputs travel across circuit boards and are beamed to the system. I'm not saying magic has been incurred.
I'm saying it's not noticeable. Aka "no significant lag" aka "no noticeable lag" aka "the games feel no different to play than the 350 other games I have on Switch"
And at the end of the day, that's what matters. When ppl complain about lag, they're not complaining it's present. Of course it's present. Always. In every game. They're complaining it's noticeable. They're complaining it's statistically and significantly more than the average game.
And I'm saying that is not the case. There is no lag. There is no statistical significance to the delta between the lag of these games and that of 99% of other games.
Nintendo Seal of Quality down the toilet.

https://twitter.com/stopskeletons/status/1452901471553351680?t=9PyKPhyb0HiR6fruKZEfeA&s=19
Even if they did get the Controller Pak working on the emulator, it won't really make Mario Kart 64 any better. I think people forget it uses all the blocks for a Controller Pak, and for what, the ability to save 2 ghosts (yes, only 2), and runs have to be decent for them to even record (so if you hit an object for example, it will stop recording).
The rumble feature isn't really an issue. These are clearly roms being used. Since Japan got an updated version, it would make sense they get that one. Although it's kinda odd to include the original when All-Stars uses the Japan Rumble version with other improvements. So just go and play that one.
Also, USA/EU get the better version of Yoshi Story (https://tcrf.net/Yoshi%27s_Story#Regional_Differences). Poor Japan having to deal with the inferior Japan version (although they could play the USA version where the Japan language can be selected).
Oh, Nintendo. If there was a time to choke this wasn’t it.
Your hard earned money at work....
Input lag might be fixed by putting your TV into Game Mode. I have to do this with the N64 itself as games like F-Zero are almost uncontrollable. I over-steer too much otherwise.
Just want to say that every single N64 game has always had frame rate issues! Except F-zero 64!
Seriously, I haven't noticed major problems playing N64 and Genesis games on Switch. I really wish they could get the frame rate up to native frame rate for the Switch though!
Well, I'm glad I couldn't afford the upgrade, but did I have to waste money on a Tribute 64 Wireless controller? I'll just blow $25 on Happy Home Paradise, which should've been a full game, as well. Could've used Digby, unless he was a patsy in Lyle's scam.
There's a reason why it's the official Nintendo seal not the Seal of Quality.
@AG_Awesome Technically yes. But on Sin & Punishment, the controls were actually made to consider also the Left Handed (which was rare back at the time) so they had 2 control schemes one that focus on the right handed and another for the left handed integrated on the controller which is represented in the Switch with the 2 styles of control schemes: the right handed uses the Right Stick to aim and ZR to shoot (emulating the Right thumb on the N64's Stick and right index on the right trigger (both triggers were Z on the N64) while you use the Switch's left face buttons (or arrow buttons) to Strafe (emulating using the N64 controller's D-pad with your left hand)
The problem is we get our hopes up when as always Nintendo does the bare minimum.
The problem with online play is very familiar to anyone who has ever played Super Mario Maker 2 multiplayer... Nintendo has an atrocious record for online multiplayer for games where multiplayer isn't central to the game.
I want to wake up and realize that this subscription garbage was just a nightmare...
@nessisonett I second the upscaling. It's really good. Mario 64 is very clean and cheese looking.
I think Nintendo may tighten up some of the lag issues and such. But... It should be noted, N64 was a bit laggy on many games to begin with.
I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of negativity in the comments. I had a quick play of a few games last night and thoroughly enjoyed myself. For the extra A$30 I paid it seems like a bargain - it's the cost of two G&Ts
And I'm super-excited to soon get an N64 controller
I also played a couple of the SEGA games, and they were pretty sweet. Enjoy y'all
Like I said since the announcement: N64 controller is a real need for N64 games. The number of buttons are ol, but the mapping is needed to be reworked for each game, something thay they won't do by standards
Just upgraded to the NSO + Expansion Pass family plan and tried out Mario 64. It seemed...fine?
I won't play through much more of it since I have already beaten Mario 64 years ago (and I have Mario 3D All-Stars with a better version of Mario 64), but unless the rest of the game is a laggy mess, I'll probably categorize the input lag issue as "speedrunner syndrome."
I asked my friends who were part of the family plan, and they were all really enjoying the games they played (mostly Mario Kart 64). Granted, they are mostly casual fans who never actually played a N64 back in the day, so they are unlikely to recognize any hard-to-notice issues.
@Spiders
In some they used it as a artistic Method.
Nintendo is doing a great job encouraging people to emulate their legacy content
50 bucks, people!
@2934c37 Polygons haven't been touched. The emulator is simply rendering them at a higher resolution than the original hardware. All the original game code is unchanged.
@BoostPower Oh, to live your nightmares.
@Spiders Yeah, this "fog" issue is ridiculous. The games look much better without the fog, and it makes one tiny moment in Ocarina of Time not as atmospheric. What they don't mention is that Ocarina of Time looks 99.9% better without the fog for the rest of the game. Also the entire game is running at a higher resolution.
And there isn't an "input lag" problem either. Is there some input lag? Yes. Is it minimal to the point of the being non-existent? Also, yes. The point of measuring input lag is to figure out if it's effecting game play and it this case it does not. (Even original consoles with wired controllers had input lag. Only NOW have emulators been able to eliminate it.)
@TheRedComet I never thought of that, that’s interesting!
I love that Z80 sound in the right hands! Lucky for me I haven’t played on real SEGA hardware in decades so I’d have to be real familiar with the OST to notice the difference.
@thinkhector I’d have to play on Switch to see if the fog is really an issue, but I do think there should at least be an option for accuracy.
As far as the input lag, I’d have to see a side-by-side comparison with original hardware, because I’ve seen some twitter videos that look brutal, and I have a very hard time believing it was that laggy back in the day... though of course the zero-latency CRTs we played on is a factor.
The lack of fog makes the graphics look better to me. Wasn't it only used due to technical limitations in the first place?
For the button mapping issue, can't you fix most of that through the button remapping option in the Switch menu? Sure, it's not an ideal solution, but it's there.
As for the input lag issues, it seems to only be due to playing the games on modern TVs in the first place. There's nothing Nintendo can do about that, so either put up with it, upgrade your TV to one that causes minimal input lag for video games in general, or figure out how to hook your Switch up to a CRT set and settle for relatively low resolution no matter which way you play.
@TryToBeHopeful to go buy a Steam Deck
Confirmed: The switch is weaker than the n64.
Sword and shield's trees were stolen from ocarina of time
Mario odyssey's mushroom kingdom is literally just peach's castle from mario 64 with slightly better textures
This means breath of the wild could have easily been a ps1 game
(this is sarcasm just fyi. Putting this out there for anyone who confuses me with one of the people who actually think this)
All of this garbage and I have to pay $30 extra? No thanks Nintendo. If I'm REALLY itching to play Ocarana of Time I'll go back and play it on my 3DS, and everything else? Muppen64 on my Powkiddy X18 functions better than this AND comes with the perk of remappable bindings. If your that desperate for our money Nintendo your gonna have to do better, especially since the package wasn't worth the price to begin with (double the burn when you consider that Nintendo bundled it with a DLC that some people would be paying for yet not utilizing because they either don't own Animal Crossing nor care to own the game or are essentially paying for the DLC TWICE due to already having said DLC yet having to pay the $30 anyway).
That level of fail is simply impressive. But remember, these are not bugs, these are features!

@Yorumi I meant there's videos on twitter of people pressing the button in the same shot as their screen... it's pretty blatant, but again I have no original hardware, or video of the same test to compare.
@Scapetti @swoose you sure? you absolutely positive this was a setup? https://twitter.com/zfg111/status/1453070996676624385
@somebread My comment is based on these tweets, where the poster includes Japanese screenshots they say are from an analogue to digital conversion: https://twitter.com/Kiro_S_Terashii/status/1452963784021135365
So I dunno, normally I'd trust ZFG about anything Zelda related. Regardless it would be nice if these outlets could provide screenshots that are actually from the same regions, instead of just pulling the first speedrunner's content they see.
Doa and we all knew it. Hype responsibly
