I wish they'd put this much effort into actually making a good Pokémon game instead. Then they wouldn't have to worry so much about what everyone else is doing...
The dialogue in the original was very much a product of its time. No modern SoS will be that extreme in terms of repeated lines, thankfully. From what I've heard from other reviewers, they've added some voiced lines, new cutscenes, and more dialogue. One reviewer felt that the characters were a highlight this time around.
As for map size, I'm not really sure. It's not a one-for-one of the original, so it will be at least somewhat larger. But it's hard to judge from videos alone how big the world feels without playing it yourself.
If you haven't already, I'd go check out some more reviews or playthrough videos; some already had early review copies, so you can watch the first few hours of gameplay. That might help you get a better feel for how the remake compares to the original.
@gcunit Nope, and as a PC gamer, I play a number of them. Story is always nice, of course, but it does seem a little odd to fault it too much on that front.
This is ridiculous. I'm no fan of Palworld, but when you get away with copywriting even the most basic of concepts for gameplay, it's a very slippery slope.
It would be one thing if they went after the obviously copied pal designs, but this kind of thinking could seriously damage the industry if it takes hold. Are we going to copyright jumping in a game next, since Mario did it on the NES?
Honestly, I'd rather take my chances trying to find it in the wild than have a preorder tied up way after launch. I live in a small town, so if I were after one, I'd try my luck locally instead.
It's as simple as this: if you want Nintendo IP, go for Switch 2, if you want anything else, I'd go for Steam Deck. The PC ecosystem is worlds better (and cheaper on games) IMO.
I'm tired of the constant comparison. Both can be great, but I have told certain people to just get a Steam Deck, since I knew they in particular, had no love for Nintendo IP.
I get times are tough with inflation, etc, but you can't tell me that Nintendo couldn't have made money at $70 for Mario Kart World. We were ready to take that hit, but $80 was IMO a greedy move to see how much they could get away with.
Yes, lots of hardcore fans will buy it, but I'm not so sure about the families and casuals.
@Gatorclops Maybe, but Nintendo has a history of taking one step forward and two steps back with a lot of things IMO. What would it have hurt to have even basic themes or proper folders during the Switch's life?
Not great, honestly, I already have a PC for third party games with better performance. Mario Kart looks nice, but I really don't care for DK (no offense) so I'm not that hyped.
I'm not all that surprised that Animal Crossing got snubbed as usual, but it still stings how poorly it seems the fans get treated even after how much money it made Nintendo...
The price is what I expected, and Mario Kart's free roam looks interesting, but there just isn't enough here yet for me to take the plunge.
Personally, I think they could have gone bigger with the games after how long they made us wait for this reveal. As someone who already has a PC for third party games at high FPSs, I've got to be honest, I'm very underwhelmed...
I think the larger question is whether Switch 2 will touch the numbers Switch 1 has. It will be very successful, I'm sure, but with the economy the way it is now, I do wonder how many causal families are going to rush to buy a new console.
Especially given that it's likely Nintendo will try to keep the original Switch around for awhile. It's easy to get lost in a hardcore echo chamber, but I think they might have a point.
Even though I grew up with them, I had no love for the timed gameplay of 1-3, but I played 4 and Underground to death. I'll still probably get this just to skate around in free-play mode, but this stinks, frankly.
This is a good example of why I don't like NSO over VC.
But worst is that there are older games I've wanted to play on my Switch, that still aren't available after about 7 years of NSO, yet they were available to buy on the Wii U...
The slow drip is a joke, and now we've dripped backward....
It's interesting, but I doubt either the Switch 2 or the Steam Deck 2 to come are any danger to one another. It's really meant for a very different audience.
As someone who owns a PC, Steam Deck, and Switch Lite, it really comes down to the games. I personally don't care for any Nintendo first-party titles apart from AC and Pikmin, so for me, the Lite is more than enough. Everything else I get from PC, so the Steam Deck is a natural complement.
But for gamers that are really into Nintendo's first parties, obviously, the Switch 2 is going to be a bigger deal than a Steam Deck. Not to mention Parents buying for kids are much more likely to go for Nintendo.
But at the end of the day, they each have a valid place, and depending on who you are, I can easily see why you'd much rather one over the other.
First off, I appreciate the effort in doing this, and I realize it's still a work in progress. Here are a few suggestions:
The simulator tag is a bit heavy-handed IMO. A few things I noted, were games such as Totally Accurate Battle Sim, Potion Craft, Lawn Mowning Sim, etc. These are well-reviewed on other platforms and not what I'd call cheap sims by any means.
Admittedly, while there are a lot of cheap sims out there, I can't help but feel like this tag is another blow to simulation gamers. We seem to be the butt of most jokes online about genres, so nothing new there...
As for the shovelware filter, I didn't notice as many issues, but there were a few small indie games of quality thrown in the mix.
I get it's sort of subjective and hard to manage, that's why I'm not sure Nintendo themselves can do much about the shovelware issue. If we're not careful, it'll just be a way to bury small indie games further.
Lastly, I recommend adding some sort of genre feature to the "Discover" section. (Unless there is one and I missed it...) As it stands, what's mostly there is just the big games that everyone has already heard of. But I do like the "Reviewed by Nintendo Life" section, it has pretty nice variety to it.
@BenAV No I agree, assuming they also plan on revealing something on the launch lineup too, if it's just news of the console first, I still think the thunder is already a bit stolen. (Not that it will matter sales-wise in the end.)
I never expected them to change the date, I just find it funny how big companies have to be so secretive and official about stuff down to the end, even when it's already out in the open.
Personally, I wish the Switch 2 was just the size of the OLED but with no bezel, so we'd get a slightly larger screen.
I have a Steam Deck, but it's a lot easier to hold the extra weight and size given it has a very contoured shape. If the Switch 2 is as shown and doesn't have any real ergonomics to speak of the extra size is going to hurt a bit.
Add to that the fact I'll likely buy a third-party grip and this thing could be a real beast size-wise. But not when compared to Acer's latest offerings, of course... lol
As a child of the 90s who has some fond memories of the toys you used to get at fast food restaurants, this is just sad.
Cardboard or fabric?
Reducing plastic might be the line we're handed, but reducing cost is likely the real reason behind it. But it's just as well, I guess, I'd never take my kids to eat food of that quality anyway...
@TheSaneInsanity Thank you for the balanced comment showcasing a side of this we don't often think about.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not into blatant AI art either, but I can't help but see this turning into a witch hunt. As of now, they said it's not AI art and gave us a gameplay trailer, so why don't we just let this be?
No one has to buy the game if they don't want to but we don't have to keep riding on this campaign of harassment after it. Let's just see how things turn out.
The internet has a serious problem with getting laser-focused on some aspect of social justice while forgetting the simple decency of being kind to other humans.
@Itachi2099 I'd hardly call it baseless. Yes we all know that Palworld was really asking for it. But Nintendo has a history of constantly tightening their grip when it comes to legal issues.
The simple fact is, they shouldn't have the legal ability to take down other games on these sorts of grounds. Whether or not they ever choose to do so is beside the point. But I certainly wouldn't put it pass them to move on to other monster catching games if they win with this nonsense.
And I say this as someone who isn't even a fan of Palworld.
This is pretty cool, I'd love to have KK tracks all in one place.
As a side note, it's kind of ironic how many off the wall things Nintendo has announced in the last few weeks. It's like they have to keep thinking of things besides Switch 2 to announce. lol
@QueenDisa Yeah, I thought this too. The list of cons is practically a mile long. If this were a non-first party game, as an example, it would have likely been a 4. lol
I haven't played it myself, but it sounds like putting a cap at 30 would have been the way to go.
Nintendo really didn't need to milk the Switch 1 this long. It's fine if you don't want to win the performance race, but you still need to be in it. When their own games have issues running that's a problem, especially given the asking price.
