Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th March)

Thanks again for the reminder to play Tetris 99! It had two surprises in store for me. First, my initial game was actually Tetris 76!!! The game filled the remaining 23 slots with bots, complete with a different sound cue than when an actual player joins. I’m sure this has happened to me before, but perhaps the XCX music is distinct enough to make it obvious. Second, if you had asked me what the XCX soundtrack would sound like…. um, knock-off Linkin Park would not have been my pick. Not to say it was terrible, just rather unexpected.

My latest dive into Animal Crossing: New Horizons is starting to wear thin. I’ve been plugging away at it daily for the last three months. Still have eight or nine plots to fill on the DLC and have two months left to close out 2021 on my island, but the remaining goals are becoming a chore. I might be taking a break shortly.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble is still proving to be a delight as I work towards getting all the season rewards and slowly chip away at the EX missions. It helps that I can pop in and out for five minutes if I am not feeling it that day, whereas ACNH takes a solid hour to complete my daily routine. Plus I fully understand that I won’t be 100% the game, already pleased getting over 80% on the missions.

Mario Picross on the NSO has been my main focus at the moment. Working on the Star group of puzzles currently. I set Fever or Chill from Dr. Mario to 1 hour on Nintendo Music and try to complete as many puzzles as possible in that time. By the end of the hour, my eyes are ready for something else.

Appreciate the reminder to play Tetris 99 this weekend. I finished Danganronpa earlier this week, but I am reluctant to immediately jump into Danganronpa V2 after playing the first one and Ace Attorney Investigations Collection back-to-back. Just a tad burned out on murder mysteries.

Re: Opinion: Against All Odds - Why Does RPG RNG Hate Me?

Wisestfool

@Anachronism I am a Charge Blade main (actually it is the only weapon I use), but I love the grind and hold off on playing quests until I’ve collected the gear I am missing. Still haven’t moved off MR1, partly because I have uncompleted HR quests and am still deciding if I want to complete them before MR gear takes the challenge away or just forget about them.

Re: Opinion: Against All Odds - Why Does RPG RNG Hate Me?

Wisestfool

I just finished Danganronpa and I liked how the Monokuma gacha machine told you your % of getting a repeat. I wanted to claim everything after the first trial, so my save scumming system was to reload my save if I didn’t get a new item within X number of 1 coin pulls:
Repeat % >50 = 2 pulls
>67 = 3 pulls
>75 = 4 pulls
>80 = 5 pulls
>90 = 10 pulls
>95 = 20 pulls

Once I got a new item, I would immediately save and repeat. I barely ever had to reload my save and a lot of times, the new item would pop on my first pull. I assume there was likely a hidden bonus on your first pull since your character is the Ultimate Lucky Student after all.

Re: Switch 2 Predicted To Cost "$400 Or More"

Wisestfool

@Bizzyb If you believe North American warehouses currently hold Switch 2 consoles before Nintendo has even properly debuted the system to the world… well there’s a hold line of refrigerators in Antarctica that you might be interested in!

Re: Switch 2 Predicted To Cost "$400 Or More"

Wisestfool

I was the oddball waiting in line at the Switch midnight release so I could buy a WiiU copy of BotW. I instead waited a year and a half to buy a Switch, and only bought it then after using an eBay promo to knock the price down to ~$250.

I plan to wait on Switch 2. I doubt I will be as lucky this go around on finding a deal, but I also won’t have to worry about FOMO on a nice special edition console because I already purchased the base model. I will however buy games for the system ahead of time.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Visual Novels

Wisestfool

I made 2025 the year of visual novels. And sought out this guide to figure which ones I already own and which ones I don’t. But first and foremost, I am shocked that nearly every VN I have played this year are not listed!

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Ace Attorney Investigations Collection are well deserving to be placed on this list! Did Nlife’s VN contributor leave? This guide is in severe need of a refresh. Kinda baffled at VA-11 HALL-A’s regulation to an honorable mention as well, but now I see it only garnered a 7/10 review score.

Anyway thanks to all the previous commenters who helped me flesh out my VN list!!!

edit- somehow I missed Danganronpa on the list previously

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Library With Two More Titles

Wisestfool

I’ve already dived into Mario Picross and cleared the Easy puzzles. Working through the regular ones now, but I have found the chiseling noise to be extremely ear-piercing. It’s to the point where I muted my TV to avoid it.

But playing in silence wasn’t as fun, until it hit me: combine both services my NSO sub is paying for! Perusing the Nintendo Music app, I quickly settled on its GB puzzler: Dr. Mario. First time I have used its “Extend Music” feature, setting Fever and Chill to 30 minutes.

I was also getting mishits from my procon (need to reapply tape to the D-pad contacts) so I switched to my regular NEScon for the closest GB feel.

I thought I would finish Live A Live last weekend, but the final chapter was like all the other chapters combined and I didn’t finish it until Thursday. Had a good run with Big Run on Splatoon 3 yesterday. Hit the silver target on my first shift, which is likely the best I can achieve with my skill and playing with randos. I continue to plug away at Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Up to 40 vacation homes on the DLC, down to less than 90 DIY/recipes missing, and I have around 30-ish bug/fish models to collect with triples of everything except tuna and stringfish to catch. Danganronpa is the main game I am working on, currently between the 2nd and 3rd trials. Everything about this game (graphics, music, plot, characters, etc.) can be described as “great but something is a little off”. And finally I hopped onto Mario Picross on the NSO last night just before slumber took hold and knocked out half of the easy puzzles. My only gripe is having to decline hints before every puzzle- a QOL update to move that to a options menu would’ve been nice.

Re: Rare's Original N64 Shooter Could Be Inducted Into The 2025 World Video Game Hall Of Fame

Wisestfool

@JJtheTexan

Fortunately for you Nintendo has its own museum in Japan so you can just skip Rochester if you are so bothered.

The VGHoF is an extension of the Strong Museum which is dedicated to understanding how toys and games affect how we play. Sure it may have started from a personal doll collection, but video games also didn’t exist back then either. The Hall didn’t open until 2015, so museums in Japan and California had ample time to create one had they so desired. So to answer your question, it’s in Rochester because Rochester answered the bell. It also helped that they already had the infrastructure dedicated to children’s games already in place.

I feel like Angry Birds is always a finalist when I see an article on this, so I checked- AB was a finalist in the very first class of 2015, then again in 2023 and this year.

Stunned Minecraft wasn’t inducted until the sixth class in 2020 after being a finalist four times. Even though it was only five years old in 2015, it was pretty obvious back then how influential MC was.

As for the other finalists:
—Age of Empires, 2nd time finalist
—CoD4:MW, 2nd time finalist, 4th time for CoD franchise (no wins so far)
—Defender, 1st time
—Frogger, 2nd time
—GoldenEye007, 3rd time
—Golden Tee Golf, 1st time
—Harvest Moon, 1st time
—Mattel Football, 2nd time
—NBA 2K, 3rd time
—Quake, 2nd time
—Tamagotchi, 1st time

This year’s finalists are mostly rehashed from 2023’s losers. AoE, AB, CoD4, GE007, NBA2K, and Quake, half of this year’s list, lost to Barbie Fashion Designer that year. Internet troll job, perhaps? But every other winner has been deserving, even if the game isn’t my cup of tea. So I’ll give Barbie the benefit of the doubt, must have been a great game for her fans.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (1st March)

Last night I stayed up til 3am trying to knockout Ace Attorney Investigations Collection before February ended to keep my one visual novel game a month in 2025 streak alive. Still need to look into why Feb was shorted a couple days. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim kicked off the VN streak in Jan. And now that it’s March, I am finally going to dive into my copy of Danganronpa Decadence to continue the trend.

I have yet to tire of my Animal Crossing: New Horizons revival. My AC quirk is that I don’t like skipping days, so when I picked it back up I had to reset my Switch clock back to July 15, 2021. It’s now October 17th on my isle and I am hoping to closeout 2021 before putting it aside once more.

I beat the final EX stage in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble earlier this week. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will continue to play until I clear the season rewards in about 5 months. I’ll use that time to chip away at the EX missions, but I am satisfied after 100%-ing the regular stages.

Also gave Splatoon 3 a little extra love to complete my Tableturf Battle card set. Still need to hit Lv 30 in that mode for the special emote, but the Lv 3 CPUs are cheating RNG ***** and I grow tired of waiting all game for the one card I need in my deck to drop on the last turn (or not at all). I will likely only play during special events from now on.

I should finish Live A Live sometime this week. And there’s always a chance I may start working on the Sunbreak DLC for Monster Hunter Rise in earnest. Been holding off on moving past MR1, but I do so love a nice casual 4-5 hour long exploration mission with no fear of failure as I grind.

Re: Switch Owners In Japan Will Have To Pay More For Nintendo Repairs

Wisestfool

It cost me ~$40 to repair the drift in my pro controller. Regular joycons were repaired of drift for free thanks to the class action lawsuit, but for some reason the pro controllers don’t qualify. Now my 2nd pro controller is having drift issues. Going to wait until I learn if I can use them with the Switch 2 before I fork over another $40 to fix the 2nd one. Little peeved that I basically have to pay the price of three pro controllers to get two functional ones.

My joycons haven’t shown any signs of drift, but at least those are easy swap out if they ever do. Likely never will since I barely use them.

Re: Talking Point: Can Nintendo Keep Up The One-Game-A-Month Release Pace On Switch 2?

Wisestfool

I doubt Nintendo will maintain this pace for the Switch 2 since backwards capability will prevent them from rehashing the same old ports on the OG Switch.

I’m more focused on finishing one game a month. I started 2024 strong before falling off by summertime. 2025 likewise has a strong start as I’ve rolled credits on 13 Sentinels and ACNH HHP DLC in Jan, and close to rolling credits on Ace Attorney Investigations and Live A Live in Feb. Oh and this week I beat the final EX stage in Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, which I count as finished since I know the Ultimate DLC stages are beyond my limited skill level.

Re: Talking Point: Can Nintendo Keep Up The One-Game-A-Month Release Pace On Switch 2?

Wisestfool

@somnambulance

I wish this article had backed up that claim with actual numbers so I sought out the answer myself. I found a pic on reddit that claimed it showed every Nintendo published game from the Switch pictured. So after 8 years, there should be (8x12=) 96 games pictured. The photo included 113 games. But as I took a closer look, it had games I personally would not count. Both versions of the same Pokemon game for example. That knocked the total down by 12. Then there were the SquareEnix games Nintendo published Stateside, but those publishing rights have since returned to SE- that was another half dozen games, bringing the true total pictured down to 95 games.

The picture didn’t include any games released in 2025 or any digital only titles (Tetris 99 made the cut as it had a physical version). So it’s safe to say Nintendo did release a game per month during the Switch’s lifespan when you factor those games in.

Re: Netflix Lays Off Staff At 'Oxenfree' Developer

Wisestfool

Back when the Switch was first unveiled, one feature they touted was the joycons “HD” rumble. Oxenfree was the first and perhaps only game to give me that “HD” experience. There was a jump scare (that wasn’t very scary tbh) in the game that used the rumble. I was playing in bed at the time and rumbling started a tingling sensation in my hands that traveled down my arms to my body, down to my toes, and back up to my chest. It was absolutely wild.

Sorry to hear about the layoffs. I haven’t played the sequel, been hoping it would get a physical release since I have a physical copy of the original.

Re: Nintendo Music's Latest Update Adds 3DS 'SteetPass Mii Plaza' Soundtrack

Wisestfool

Streetpass Plaza was my 3DS jam. My most played game, over 500 hrs played according to my Activity Log (why oh why Nintendo did you take this feature away from the Switch?). I traveled for work back then and loved nothing better than getting someone at my gate from a new region. Went so far as to drive 2 hrs from Boston to a Vermont McD’s to secure my last missing state and complete the US.
