Re: HD Remaster Of Grandia And Dreamcast Sequel Revealed For Nintendo Switch

Waninoko

@PALversusNTSC Sega doesn't hold any rights to the Grandia titles, it was already ported to PC and PS2 in 2001/2002. Sooo if you want to thank someone, thank Square Enix (the current holders of the franchise).

Also I'm cautiously optimistic (or should I say "rather worried"), as this port is going to be handled by the same company that did the Anniversary Edition, which was arguably better than the 2002 PC port, but was still very lacking in some areas (badly looped music and a lot, I mean a lot, of sound playback issues). Grandia II on the Dreamcast is still one of my all time favourite titles, so I'd hate to see it receiving the same lousy treatment on the Switch. Curious about the HD release of Grandia 1 as well (as you might've guessed, it's also one of my all time fav Saturn games).

And while we're at it... Skies of Arcadia 2/HD when?

Re: Hulu Video Streaming App Out Today For Switch In North America

Waninoko

Gee, I wonder where all NL users, who back in March were shouting "we don't need apps/browser/[insert a very basic functionality right here] on Switch!!!!! This is a video game console!!!!! I have other devices for that!!!", are now. Throw that bs out of the window, I want everything conveniently on my precious little Switch.

A dedicated app is really some great news for me. Hoping that more apps (Netflix? Spotify? Facebook client?) will pop up soon.

Re: Review: Sonic Forces (Switch)

Waninoko

That's actually a very fair grade right here - I played a bit of the PS4 version, and it exactly feels like a not bad, 6/10 experience - it's not stellar or anything, but enjoyable. It's a tad worse than Generations or Colors in my opinion, but it was still fun enough to play.

I really wish they'd return to the Homing Attack mechanic from Adventure era, though.

Re: System Shock Reboot On Switch "Not Off The Table"

Waninoko

System Shock 1 and 2 are one of my all time favourite games. Since the remake is looking pretty good so far, having SHODAN mock you whenever you go would surely be amazing.

M-m-make yourself com-f-f-fortable, hacker. St-t-tay a while.

Re: There's a Sonic Forces Demo on the Japanese eShop, But It Has a Strange Limitation

Waninoko

That's funny, as I don't find it that strange to be honest. Being mostly a DOS/Windows gamer back then, I played a whole lot of timed demos. The most memorable might be the demo of Fur Fighters for the PC - it featured one complete location, although you only had 6 minutes to play it. Even though I played it to death, it wasn't nearly enough to complete even the half of the level. Ended up exploring different parts of the level within each playthrough.

Re: Review: Pokémon Gold And Silver (3DS eShop / GBC)

Waninoko

Pokemon G/S/C is one of those special games I will never be tired of (along titles like Sonic Adventure, Grandia II, Crash Bandicoot 3, Ultima VII, Little Big Adventure 2 and such).

I finished it numerous times, yet I have absolutely no problems starting my adventure again. Truly an amazing addition to my 3DS library.

Re: Review: PAN-PAN (Switch eShop)

Waninoko

WHY MUST YOU BREAK MY HEART NINTENDO LIFE

I read the tagline first and was all like "oh my god, Little Big Adventure for Switch confirmed?!?!" And now I'm all disappointed.

(LBA and LBA2 are among my all time favourite games...)

Re: Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works Looks Like A Dream Come True

Waninoko

Still love my Dreamcast to this day. The amount of attention my beloved console is getting recently is just crazy. Several days ago yet another game (Monaco Grand Prix 2) had its online mode restored, and can be played with other people online, several new indie games were announced (or released), and now this... way beyond awesome. <3 Long live the king!

Re: Review: Sonic Mania (Switch eShop)

Waninoko

Seeing how much retro love Sonic has received, I can't help, but want to see the same treatment with other forgotten Sega franchises... Streets of Rage, Shining Force, NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia... pretty please?

Re: Video: Check Out the Opening Cinematic for Sonic Mania

Waninoko

In a parallel universe this was released for the Saturn in 1996, and the fans rejoiced...

Nevertheless - I want it, and I want it now. 15th can't come soon enough! Good thing it's a national holiday in Poland, so I'll be having a free day off (well, several hours off to be honest, because I'm also running a small business in my free time haha) - definitely a Sonic Mania day for me!

Re: Feature: Is It Really Cheaper To Order Retro Games Direct From Japan?

Waninoko

Of course it is.

I collected a whole lot of N64, Saturn and GB/GBC games from Japanese shops with oversea shipping, and for real cheap too. Stuff like CIB Pokemon Red (10$), Mario Kart 64 (2$) or Tamagotchi Park with backup memory cart (3$). And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

The only thing that sucks is the shipping cost (EMS and nothing else, the post office lost my SAL package once, never gonna go economic/standard ever again) and the shipping time (especially if the custom office holds your package). Other than that 10/10, would buy again. I personally recommend Japan Game Stock shop (SEGA games) and Japan 4 U (Nintendo).

By the way - some games, which are crazy rare, will be expensive even in Japanese shops, naturally. Stuff like Super Tempo for Saturn still sells for around 14 000JPY (~400 USD)

Re: Bask in Nostalgia With Sonic Mania Special and Bonus Stage Footage

Waninoko

Blue Spheres AND a Sonic R-inspired special stage with lowpoly classic Sonic models?

10/10 best game, my hype level is over the roof.

@OfNullAndVoid special stage is a place where you collect Chaos Emeralds. Bonus stage is for getting more points, rings and 1 ups (assuming they work just like in S3&K). I wonder if there is going to be more bonus stages, than just the blue spheres (gumball machine, slots and that weird rotation sphere thing from S3&K, anyone?)

Re: Video: Did You Know Gaming Delves Into The History Of The Game Boy Advance

Waninoko

I remember reading about the upcoming Game Boy Advanced (yeah, they kept misspelling the thing for the whole article) in one gaming mag, probably around Christmas holidays of 2000. Apart from showing some weird mockups of the console, it was very exciting just to see the screenshots from the upcoming games. I also remember some of the trivia from the video was in the article as well.

We still have our GeimBois, both Advance and Advance SP (and even a link cable on top of that), wonderful little machines.

Re: 3DS OS Version 11.5.0-38 Is Now Available for Download

Waninoko

Okay, typical forced jokes aside, some exciting things in this update. As I suspected, New 3DS got the most of it - while ye olde 3DSe got system settings, 3DS camera, eShop, zone hotspot list, config system module, extrapad applet and ACT system module updates, the New one also received camera, GSP, MCU, QTM and placeholder menu updates.

I'm surprised they didn't bump up the native firm, which means all of the hacks and sweet homebrew is still working.

Re: Guide: Everything We Know About the Super NES Classic Edition

Waninoko

Yes, there's that one simple thing I'd like to know.

WHERE DO I PREORDER THIS BLOODY THING

Either only 20 copies will be shipped to Poland, or everybody has supersonic reflexes. I tried three different shops (frantic refreshing included), but nope, they've been sold in, I dunno, 7 seconds?

Re: Congratulations Nintendo 64, You're A Proper Grown-Up Now

Waninoko

"(...)the N64 itself wasn't quite the success Nintendo had hoped it would be"

Heh, fun fact: Sega Saturn actually outsold Nintendo 64 in Japan (barely, but still: 6+ million Saturns vs. 5.44 million N64s), mostly due to lack of jRPGs and anime-based games on N64, in comparison to the SS.

Nevertheless - happy birthday, N64! Man, I sure do love this console, it's among my top ten systems ever. Guess I'm gonna celebrate the occasion by breezing through my N64 collection and playing some of the classics later.

Re: Nintendo Apologizes for Switch Shortages, Promises an Increase in Production

Waninoko

@electrolite77

Sadly yeah... when my old 3DS bit the dust (mobo failure) I had to literally beg in three different places, before finally getting a DIRECT telephone number to one of the Conquest Entertainment execs, to perform a Nintendo ID unlink, otherwise I would lose EVERYTHING I bought on my account/old 3DS. At least all ended well - I don't have my old saves or Streetpass data, but 'least I have access to my past purchases on a new 3DS.

Re: Nintendo Apologizes for Switch Shortages, Promises an Increase in Production

Waninoko

@neufel
An explosive combo of "Nintendo is for kiddies" mentality + smaller base + Nintendo of Poland doesn't exist + expensive. Who would spend a 1399 PLN (which is more than a half of the average salary in Poland, mind you) for just a gaming console (without any accessories/games), when you can get a powerful tablet/better-than-lower-end notebook/PS4 with three games? Not to mention when any Nintendo system breaks, it's tough luck, you need to do some crazy crap, like sending the system to Germany/Czech Republic for repairs, because, as I said, Nintendo continues to actively ignore our country (and several other Slavic countries).

There are at least 3 Switch units in our local game store - they've been sitting like this, collecting dust, for more than a month. Not to mention large electronic stores (Media Markt, Saturn) are shoving Nintendo products to the distant corners, because nobody gives an eff about them. If I want to buy some Nintendo-related things, I have to scout through eBay/online shops for tolerable prices, because it's so bad around here.

Re: Random: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Patch Removes Offensive "Bras d'honneur" Gesture

Waninoko

Heh, about that... here's a bit of historic trivia for you guys, as this symbol in Poland is both offensive and iconic.

You see, in Poland the gesture is known as "wał", or "gest Kozakiewicza" ("Kozakiewicz's gesture"), named after Władysław Kozakiewicz, a brilliant Polish athlete, who famously displayed this gesture after winning the gold medal in the pole vault at the 1980 Summer Olympics in front of a hostile crowd in Moscow. This coincided with the rise of the Solidarity Union in Poland in 1980 (keep in mind that Poland was still a communist country in the 80's - the systemic transition didn't occur until 1989). It had such an impact, that the USSR embassy in Poland wanted to disqualify Kozakiewicz, and strip him off his medal.

Re: Harvest Moon: Light of Hope to Brighten Up the Nintendo Switch

Waninoko

SNES style or not, doesn't matter - as long as there are no unnecessary (or downright annoying) additions and/or gameplay changes, grindy foraging and that stupid progression s**t, which rarely was done right in HM ("oh the town is empty you need to play for 3328 years to unlock a basic shop and if you play for 16 centuries you might get married"), I'd say it's a huge yes from me. And if they at least try to stick to the basic formula from BTN/FoMT... that would be even more grand! However, judging from the description, that slow city progression is still going to be present, isn't it?

That reminds me - Switch could surely use a virtual console HM game. How about Magical Melody? That was quite a delightful entry in the franchise.

Re: Nintendo Shows Off 2D Gameplay Footage From Sonic Forces

Waninoko

I'm actually looking forwards to this game. I enjoyed playing Generations (almost 100%-ed it on X360, the only achievement I didn't bother with was the 'don't take damage on the final boss' thing), and if they use the same formula here, I'll most likely enjoy this part as well.

Re: Nintendo Starts Paying Out to Switch and 3DS Hack Tipsters

Waninoko

@Action51
Huh? Haven't you heard of the Dreamcast community? I'm surprised, actually, as the DC scene is (almost) as big as it was back in 2000. Let me give you a brief rundown of the things we managed to achieve:

-reverse engineer some of the Dreamcast online games and the connection protocols - it's possible to play online on your DC right here, right now - party like it's 2000. Gems like Alien Front online, Worms World Party, Chu Chu Rocket or Phantasy Star Online - not only that, but there's also a small app/web page called Dreamcast Now!, which shows who is currently playing what online. All you need to have is a small telephone cable mod and a Raspberry Pi/computer with a modem,

-GD-ROM emulator boards (both for SD cards and USB thumbs) are now available, no more fears about dead lasers (and they're compatible with pretty much every game out there). Hell, you can even hard-soldier an IDE hard drive to the DC board, and it'll work!

-several indie games (including commercial ones) and ports are being announced and released on the Dreamcast every year

-lots and lots of people are actively hunting down Dreamcast development kits and memory cards, in hopes of finding unreleased games or obscure DLCs - one of such unreleased gems (Millenium Racer) was discovered recently in a late beta state, totally playable, and released to the community. As for DLCs, there's a special online archive, where you can download all of the discovered ones.

The Dreamcast may have died back in 2001 (2004 in Japan), but the Dream still lives on.

Re: Nintendo Starts Paying Out to Switch and 3DS Hack Tipsters

Waninoko

"As soon as Nintendo shuts one door, another inevitably opens."

As a QA/security engineer (and a pentester, but sssh, as some NL users are gonna chase me around with torches, splurting words like "hacker!!!111"), I'll just say it's totally normal. Nothing is guaranteed to be 100% tested and secured, as there's pretty much no way to achieve that kind of test coverage - sooner or later some vulnerability is going to pop up for sure. The only question here is "when" and "how".

And hey, a bounty bug program is much better than a zero-day, y'know. Especially for a brand new piece of shiny hardware.

Re: Random: Somebody Put Yoshi Into Sonic 2, And The Results Are Amazing

Waninoko

If anybody were wondering - SEGA is totally fine with rom hacks. Moreover - if you have created an amazing hack, and bought a corresponding game on Steam, you can put the hack in Steam Workshop for everyone to legally download and enjoy. Genesis does what Nintendon't - even after all those years, my lovely people.

Re: Downloadable Games for the Switch Will Be Locked to One Console at a Time

Waninoko

@Yorumi
You can do pretty much whatever you want with the games you purchased on GOG, which is awesome. I used to just take the executables and data files from my GOG purchases, and play them classics on my oldschool DOS/Windows 98 machine (just like to good ol' times), and they worked great.

As for Steam I don't know how exactly it works between two PCs, but when I got a new notebook, I just downloaded Steam, logged to my account and that's it - I had all of my cloud saves and library ready to be downloaded again (dunno about the old PC, as the hard drive failed in that one, but I guess it must've somehow unlink it?)

Re: Downloadable Games for the Switch Will Be Locked to One Console at a Time

Waninoko

When my old 3DS completely broke I literally BEGGED NIntendo of Poland to unlink my NNID and transfer it over to the new system, so I won't lose ALL of my purchased digital titles. So if the games are still locked to one console, I just hope at least I'll be able to do it myself this time around.

Basically, when you live in an unsupported country (with only the distribution branch), with no official repair service, you're in some deep triple S when your console stops working. Please, for the love of God, please, don't do this again with the Switch.

Re: Pokémon GO Experiences a Big Boost in Revenue with the Generation II Update

Waninoko

I was really hyped for Gen 2 (it's my, along with 1 and 5, favourite generation after all!), and honestly now I'm kinda disappointed with the update. Nothing really changed - now instead of Rattatas and Weedles, there's an abundance of Sentrets and Swinubs (with a chance of finding Natus, Spinaraks, Hoothoots and Ledybas). The only less common Mons I've encountered, are Wobbuffet, Misdreavus and Sneasel. And of course no sign of starters/Totodile. Keep in mind I live in one of the larger cities of Poland (Cracov), and I pass through the city centre while going to/from work everyday, having PokeGo turned on. I imagine more rural areas have it even worse. Oh and the evolution items, dear God. I only got one King's Rock, after visiting more than 100 PokeStops.

However gotta give'em credit for a somewhat better stability - I didn't have nearly as much connection problems and crashes.

Re: Retro: This Is Why We Should Probably Be Glad Nintendo Stuck With Carts For The N64

Waninoko

To be honest, every medium is exposed to some kind of danger. Discs can rot, cartridges are getting corroded and their RAM has a limited lifespan, and floppies will demagnetize. Of course one thing will happen faster than the other, but nothing lasts forever.

One easy thing you can do, in order to increase your precious collection's life span, is to properly store them. You know, all of those instructions like proper temperature and humidity, avoiding exposure to sunlight, not blowing into cartridges, clean the contacts from time to time, opening your machines/ccartridges and cleaning them inside etc. This sounds very basic and commonsensical , but believe me - I've been dealing with storage media for more than 20 years now, my oldest CD is from 1992 (only a handful of small scratches, nothing fatal), and floppy game from 1984 (Ultima 4 for the good ol' C64 - everything works, including the save!) - and yes, they're showing no sign of weariness.

Of course I had some cases of disc rot, though all of them were some cheap burned CDs, or magazine cover CD-ROMs.
