After smashing its Kickstarter goal, Digital Sun Games' action RPG title Moonlighter has been steadily getting closer to release. Until now there had been no inclination of a release on Switch but, thanks to a rather epic reveal trailer, we now know that the game is indeed coming to the console.
The game sees you lead a double life of sorts - in the day time, you lead an ordinary life of a shopkeeper, conducting your business in the local village and getting to know the residents; under the moonlight, however, you'll be fighting off enemies and opening gates to different worlds. You can get a quick taste of what the game has to offer, as well as seeing the confirmation for the Switch version, in the trailer below.
The game's Steam page indicates an "Early 2018" release but there is no word yet on when the game will launch on Switch. It does feel like it could be a perfect fit for the hardware, though - you could play through your shopkeeping duties during your daily commute and then get stuck into the rogue-like combat when you get home in the evening.

Lovely pixel art. The Zelda inspiration (both NES and posterior titles) is strong here. I like what I'm seeing.
Looks really nice. Sort of gives me Stardew Valley vibes.
Yeah! I've played this game just a few days ago, it's really good.
And the pixel art is absolutely adorable.
OMG! It's happening, been wanting to play this when I first saw it, and it's gonna be on Switch? What luck, can't wait.
It looks ace! Great graphics and some 2d zelda style adventuring.
Seen it earlier, reminds me a little of LTTP.
I am dancing here! It is everything I wanted since I spent two hours with it at Gamescom this year. My shop is ready!
This looks flipping amazing. Lovely art, sweeping music. I only hope the combat is interesting enough to sustain the gameplay loop. If it's all just hit, run away, hit, run - it might get a bit stale. I like the look of this a lot, though.
Looks pretty good. I wish the number of frame animations was a little higher but I'm nitpicking. Added to watch list
I'd think I would be able to really get into this. Has a Zelda/Secret of Mana look/style to it but with the other shopkeep angle if that plays anything into it other than the introduction.
Price though? I'll check steam.
Love to get that closing bit with the Switch controller as an animated gif.
Another one for the potential list and it looks great, but a few more modern looking games wouldn't hurt?
Pixel art graphics have their place and there are some excellent games on switch already, but something alittle more detailed like octopath wouldn't hurt?
Looks cool, loved the music in the trailer. Hope it's just as good while playing.
Got to love the end of the trailer.
Awesome
Day 1 for sure!
First indie game that looks great!
@Multi I must say, the art style goes very well with this game when you are playing it.
@Dunan I had a lot of fun while playing it for two hours.
Completely misjudged this as shovelware when I saw the thumbnail. I now recall seeing this game revealed some time ago and am very happy to see it again (coming to the Switch, no less)!
The art direction is fantastic. I'm reminded of Hyper Light Drifter in terms of overall presentation but with more Zelda flavor. I'm not much of an indie gamer, but I was reminded just how much I had my sights set on this game from that trailer.
I like how you run a shop at the beginning of each day; that feels really unique and fresh.
Good night, the sprite animation in this game is so good. And it looks like classic top-down Zelda with a bit more RPG. Very interested.
Looks awesome, another game for my Switch.
Looks good. Also, I always appreciate a pure gameplay trailer too.
Woah looks amazing. I can't believe I wasn't aware of this game before. I'm a huge fan of the Anomaly games and This War of Mine by 11 Bit Studios, so I think that is as close to a definite buy as a game can get based around a trailer and the devs reputation. Also, I agree, it looks like a really good fit for the Switch. This is some excellent news!
OH YEAH BABY!
Looks like the logical counterpart to Recettear - a more simplistic shopkeeping aspect, but a more fleshed out dungeon crawling aspect. Can't wait to put my teeth into this!
Looks interesting! I like the bit at the end with the joy cons, cute! 😊
@Orangezap89 I had more fun on the shop than in the dungeon, but both were really enjoyable!
@Drac_Mazoku they are randomly generated, but very well designed for the level and equipment you have. The game is REALLY fun and I hate roguelike as well.
Day 1 for me. This looks awesome!
WOW! This looks and sounds great!
Well, they certainly nailed pixel art billowing cloth. Whole lot of... Billowing cloth in that trailer. Recettear+Zelda is obviously a great combo if done right, I just hope the UI and controls hold up. Definitely one to watch.
It is ridiculous how all over this I will be when it comes out .. looks awesome .. has shot right to the top of an already huge wish list . No idea how I am going to play all these games , but I am sure going to try !
Looking like a purchase, provided the gameplay is there. I'm an unabashed Zelda fan and this might scratch that itch nicely.
I actually played Moonlighter during this year's PGA trade show. It was a beautiful blend of awesome pixel-art aesthetic and Minish Cap-like RPG action. Definitely gonna have my eye on this one.
@Multi
The Devs have heard your outcry against pixel art graphics and are now going to be hard at work revamping the entire game to a AAA graphics powerhouse to fit your personal taste!
@setezerocinco agreed it does look great (the same for cave story+ and golf story).
Looks like another game for me
@Multi and Stardew Valley (but I do not know how much of roguelike stuff it has in it).
There would need to be a black-out for me to play that at home in 2018... lol!
This looks great!
For being a pixel art game this looks real nice! Everything I see so far looks great I'll probably pick this up day 1.
@Drac_Mazoku good point. And thanks for the Adventure Bar tip. I am downloading the demo B]
Awesome news. Hopefully it comes out on the same day as other versions.
Looks impressive and fun.
The graphics look award-winning-level FANTASTIC!
Was hoping that there would be a multiplayer mode when I saw the trailer, but upon cursory research I am disappointed that there won't be such a mode. Would have been fun to play this with friends.
Wow it looks so good! Remind me a bit of Zelda serie and Hyper light drifter. Day one for me.
Dai wun 4 shure
I'm interested. Definitely will buy at some point
@Multi I agree. I don't think they need to go full modern, though (that's beyond the budget of a number of indies). I think The Binding of Isaac does a great job with this (simple graphics and play mechanics, but with a style that's not derivative of the 8 or 16 bit era).
Recettear, Atelier and Binding of Issac? Looks fun and interesting, I may just pick it up if the price is right.
This looks right up my alley
It looks lovely and will surely find a home on my Switch.
Very excited to play this someday.... keep these 2D action RPGs coming!!
Seems like this concept has been done before in lots of other games. I don't think it's as original as the developer may think it is.
too many games, so little time
For some reason, out of all the game reveal trailers for Switch games, this was my favorite by far. I think the music played a huge part. But the game looked awesone. This is the first indie game since the PS3 era to remind me that these style games can have just as big an impact on me as the Mario's and Zelda's of the world.
Y'know what game doesn't need spiritual successors? Zelda 1, because it's a flash game by today's standards.
Just my cup of tea!
Looks very cool. Looks kind of like Bastion with the white hair protagonist. Speaking of which...
Looks nice, but another Rogue?!
What happened to handcrafted level-design?!
OMG.
I WANT IT NOOOOOOW !!!
Loooooks greeeeeeeeat.
Im so excited for this now. I do not and have not enjoyed Stardew Valley so I'm hoping this will grab me the right way.
