As most of you know, Pokémon GO received a substantial update last week that finally rolled out the Pokémon from the Johto Pokédex, along with many other tweaks and additions. It could be argued as being the biggest update the game has yet received since launch, and certainly got many fans back into the game to catch all the newest additions.
It seems that the surge in interest has also kick-started a rise in profits as well, as the game has now once again topped the iOS charts and become the number one highest grossing game in the U.S.. On Android, it's managed to re-enter the top three, though Game of War and Mobile Strike are still ahead. Before the update, the game was slipping down the top ten on both storefronts, and hadn't seen the top spot in the U.S. since 4th January, when the New Year's Event was still in swing. It seems likely that the game won't hold the top spot for long, then, but it shows that significant updates can and will coax lapsed fans back into playing for a while.
What do you think? Has the new update gotten you playing again? How long do you think it'll be until Gen III shows up? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Unpopular Opinion: Niantic deserves the boost in revenue
wait, people have been telling me that this game is dead since fall of last year
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy What's up with in app purchases on Netflix?
@MitchVogel
A lot of things apparently.
@MitchVogel I believe it's because Netflix can now charge your subscription through iTunes. I guess just an easier way to unify some of your purchases.
Meanwhile...
$$$ all the people buying them lures haha
@tankNZ what's with the flags? If you don't mind me asking.
So many Pokemon so few balls. 😕
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy Interesting, I didn't know you could do subscriptions right through the app store
The update was nice I've been playing again as well , l've dropped around fifteen bucks on the app since it started can't imagine I will spend anymore ten to twenty is my limit on apps gotta draw a line somewhere .lol
I was really hyped for Gen 2 (it's my, along with 1 and 5, favourite generation after all!), and honestly now I'm kinda disappointed with the update. Nothing really changed - now instead of Rattatas and Weedles, there's an abundance of Sentrets and Swinubs (with a chance of finding Natus, Spinaraks, Hoothoots and Ledybas). The only less common Mons I've encountered, are Wobbuffet, Misdreavus and Sneasel. And of course no sign of starters/Totodile. Keep in mind I live in one of the larger cities of Poland (Cracov), and I pass through the city centre while going to/from work everyday, having PokeGo turned on. I imagine more rural areas have it even worse. Oh and the evolution items, dear God. I only got one King's Rock, after visiting more than 100 PokeStops.
However gotta give'em credit for a somewhat better stability - I didn't have nearly as much connection problems and crashes.
With more frequent crashes, gyms being ruined by Blissey, and rare Pokemon now being even harder to find, I'm wondering how long it will last this time before people get bored again.
The increased number of Pokemon has messed up spawns so much I seem to have already hit the limit of the number of new Pokemon I can get in my area without some serious luck, and I imagine a lot of others will stop playing once they reach that point as well.
Shocking! In other news, fire is hot and water is wet...
I admittedly have been playing again, too. Though I do still have to finish up Moon (training my over 60 'mons to lvl.55 at Poni Wilds atm) and BotW lands next week. Oh, my time! Thankfully I will be done with my 30 page seminar paper by then.
I never stopped!
Shouldn't they have added the rest of the gen 1 Pokémon that aren't Pidgey and Rattata before adding all the gen 2 ones?
I needed more bag space so spent my first £2 on the ge. I figured I played enough of the game to warrant it. Kind of amazed they didn't give us more bag and Pokemon space anyway after adding everything for Gen 2. No new starter either : /
It's getting boring now, every Pokémon Go article on any website you get people saying "people still play this?" or "the game is/was dead" ....wow, guess what? People still play Super Mario Bros 30 years later and that had a similar cultural impact. Just because it's a smartphone game and people generally move on quicker when the initial hype dies down doesn't mean there aren't a great deal more people who still enjoy it LESS than a year later. I still play it when I'm out of the house, just checking what's near if there's anything I need, or leaving the app running to rack up some walking distance on my eggs and try to get something new. So what if it's not as popular as it was? Makes walking anywhere a little more interesting.
Anyway, no surprises gen2 boosted the revenue. Of course it did.
It's super effective!
My interest was just waning, too. Good timing. And more features are coming. I think most people saw this coming, didn't they? Besides the usual whiny-types anyway. Niantic had such leverage that it could just keep adding small features and small improvements for a long time. Clash of Clans and games like it have done the same for ages, but this is matched up with a super strong brand. Just like the original Pokémon releases there are always a few who can't get their head around how others view things; I remember a toy store manager telling me it was just a fad and would die out soon back in the 90s.
Anyway, it's fun enough. I haven't paid a dime myself but I'm not against it someday. Although I have to admit Pokémon GO influenced our decision to get an Apple Watch. Yep.
Last update has killed it for me as it seems to have quadrupled the data use.
@DragonEleven I'm not having these issues you're talking about, for me the game has been running a lot better since the update (less laggy, more responsive etc).. this goes for the vast majority of people in the Facebook groups I'm a member of. Maybe something on your end is causing your crashes?
Edit: Ah, you maybe mean the server crashes that happened the first couple of days! People were excited and rushed out to catch as many as possible... both a sign gamer isn't "dead" and no where near as bad as the crashes the game had in the first 2/3 months. Think I crashed out once in the first couple of days? Game has been smooth since.
As for finding pokémon, I've seen large groups of people walking around hunting Kanto pokémon and having a lot of fun & people are still posting Aerodacyl & Snorlax finds... while we have out first "70 Johto Pokémon" award posted up. The balance is pretty decent. What is the limit you've hit? The limit in my town was about 10 pokémon so I did what you're supposed to do and took a bus to somewhere else... now up to 60ish Johto pokémon.
@cmk8 I'm lucky to have 3GB a month so it's not too bad for me... I think the data use is down to EVERYTHING having been moved server-side. Even the pokémon icons load from the server (though to be fair that was last update).
I have started playing again, sporadically, and it's nice to actually have the spirit of discovery again. That feeling of seeing a new Pokémon is exciting. The new berries add some strategy. Do I want to make a Pokémon easier to catch or get more candy? It's a nice touch.
It's not all rosy though. The evolution items... they don't appear. At all . I think that getting them via pokestops is the worst way to get them. They just don't appear. I go through 15-20 stops a day and have not seen one yet. Of the 4 friends I have asked, only one has gotten an evolution item. Plus I feel like they cut the items you used to get at a stop. When I used to play, I routinely got 5-7 items. Now I get 3 flat, and I'm lucky if more than one is a pokeball.
All in all it's a decent update. Solid B. I figure after a coullle weeks the same problems people had will appear with this, with the same gen 2 Pokémon being the only ones that appear over and over.
@DanteSolablood While the app is working, it is working better, but it will now either freeze or crash altogether around 2-3 times a day.. which was only happening around once a week (at most) before.
Rare Pokemon have always been hard to find in my town, but would still get reports of people finding them at least a few times a week... but there haven't been any since gen 2 went live... only people finding them in eggs, which is the only way most people around here can get rare Pokemon.
And travelling to nearby towns would be pointless as they don't have anything different... some things are more or less common, but would be unlikely to find anything that can't be found in my town.
The limit for my town does seem to be higher than yours... I'm basically at the limit with 30-40 gen 2 Pokemon (excluding the pre-existing babies)... probably 40-50 if you include uncommon evolutions I'm slowly collecting the candy/items for.
@Baker1000 I totally agree. It was bound to happen.
Any game that comes out and was such a phenom like it was at launch was bound to lose popularity as time goes on. But considering how bananas it was upon release, any kind of drop would seem massive when in reality, it remains a well used mobile game that many others would kill to be as popular as today.
Can you trade Pokemon yet?
I never stopped playing. I like the update though
@Franklin I think Niantic said that was coming soon. Next update maybe?
I do like that Gen II is out. But I wish they made it a little easier to either find Snorlax in the wild or get him from 10km eggs. So far, still nothing. Yet it seems like everyone in my city has one because they still dominate the gyms. I'm doing everything I can but there's never Snorlax anywhere in the city...and there doesn't seem to be any trick to getting one to hatch from 10km eggs. How did everyone end up getting one?
Not going back to play If I can't even fight in a gym without a 2000+ CP Pokémon. Even then, the battle system is not really Pokémon right? At least, Fire emblem heroes is a thing
@Haywired Only legendaries are left, and I can't see how that would do anything other than weaken the game
I quit playing this game since you can't play Pokémon Go In the car anymore.
@DragonEleven Sorry for the late reply (internet issues). Basically as I see it, is that the "crashes" are caused by the sheer amount of people playing... much like the lag/ crashes when the game was at it's most popular. Maybe the reason I've experienced less is playing in UK hours?
Your pokmon diversity seems odd to me, I know different places definitely holds different pokémon. If you're not travelling around you will always find your pokémon pool limited. Maybe that's what's been colouring your opinion of balance? Either way, good luck catching out there!
It's not there anymore..it's now replaced with Mobile Strike, the most marketed app ever
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy It's sad that wanting a beloved company that works to make our dreams come true do well is an "unpopular opinion".
@Kamiyouni Can people not just learn to let a thread die?
I don't like getting pointless posts in my inbox 2-3 weeks later.
I won't go back to play it unless they get us a proper battle system, and other ways to battle( not only overleved gymns)
@ThePoochyKid lol
@ninty-love Please stop. I just want to be left in peace, not bothered by a month-old post.
