Sonic Mania is only a couple of weeks away, which is very exciting indeed for fans of the blue blur that are of a certain age, or are perhaps younger but with an appreciation for the 16-bit days.
The latest video for the game adds more cause for excitement, as it unveils the special and bonus stages to be found - they are remixes of what we saw in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic CD. In addition the latest trailer and press release confirms Time Attack, which lets you speedrun stages and upload your times to online leaderboards.

Are you excited about this one?

Perfection. Couldn't ask for more out of this game from what I've seen thus far. I really can't see how this WON'T live up to the hype.
Need this now, tired of being teased!
This is beautiful. Not gonna lie, when I saw blue sphere I teared up a little!
Less than two weeks to go! Hype!
It has been a long time since a trailer has had me legit grinning. This is amazing.
also knuckles look funnie when he do the turn in 3d
What date can we expect a review?
Man did you see those 3d graphics? I hope my Switch can handle 1080p docked and native 720p undocked at 60 FPS. Still day one buy for me.
Nooo! Not the Sonic 3 bonus stages! I always did well on the bonus stages from 1 & 2, but for some reason the ones on 3 posed more of a challenge for me. I still managed to tackle them though, so I'm willing to tackle these as well.
That said, what's the difference between the gold ring bonus stages and the checkpoint bonus stages? Gold rings used to be where you'd get the chaos emeralds, and checkpoints power-ups, if I remember right. Been so long since I played any of them, so maybe someone else can help me remember.
It looks amazing! It's funny that a bunch of superfans know what people want more than SEGA themselves..
Oh my gosh! Its beautiful! Glad I preordered the collectors edition.
This just might be the first Sonic game in decades that I won't be disappointed by.
@audiobrainiac Heya mate. Does the limited edition come with a physical copy? :/
Blue Spheres AND a Sonic R-inspired special stage with lowpoly classic Sonic models?
10/10 best game, my hype level is over the roof.
@OfNullAndVoid special stage is a place where you collect Chaos Emeralds. Bonus stage is for getting more points, rings and 1 ups (assuming they work just like in S3&K). I wonder if there is going to be more bonus stages, than just the blue spheres (gumball machine, slots and that weird rotation sphere thing from S3&K, anyone?)
@OfNullAndVoid The big Special Rings take you to the Special Stages, which were what was shown first.
The checkpoints, when hit with enough rings, take you to the Bonus Stages, which appear to be Blue Sphere stages.
I just wish there were a physical copy
HOLY CRAP I WANT
PERFECTION!
Aw but the original Sonic had my favorite style bonus game.
This game just keeps getting better and better!
wow, christian whitehead and co. really know how to make a sonic game, unlike sonic team and their abysmal sonic forces title.
oops, will my comment get taken down because people disagree with me?
This isn't another half-pipe bonus stage. (Not to say half-pipe staqes are bad, until you play sonic 4 episode 2 and you feel their overstayed welcome.) This looks awesome.
@GrailUK unfortunately, no. I would prefer it did. Instead u get a metallic collectible download card, a 12" statue of Sonic with Mega Drive stand, a faux mega drive cartridge, and a Sonic ring, all in a good looking box.
I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED IITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!
@GrailUK It comes with a code card for a digital copy. Don't think there's a physical version as of yet. SEGA's product manager has mentioned that they are interested in making a physical copy however.
Oh man, they really nailed the Sega CD look with this game!
@OfNullAndVoid We are opposites then. I always did well on Sonic 3's orb stages, yet failed most of the time in Sonic 2's half pipe stages (never played 1). I always felt the stages in 3 were more "fair", as for me the half pipe relied too much on memorizing the spikes and twitch reaction. To each their own I guess
@Captain_Toad The half pipe version in Sonic Rush was good though IMO.
@SwitchGlitch you think your funny?
Pretty cool. The first few stages totally make me think they could make an F-Zero-type game set in that Sonic universe.
My god, YESSSSS!!! Sonic 3 Special Stage!!!!!!
All that is missing, by now, is a 3DS port, because come on, it would be a perfect fit. But still, Nintendo support and portability, with the Switch, are kind of already confirmed, so I can't complain at all.
Everything in this is perfect, there's no other way to say it.
@SnowFox Thanks Snow ^^
That's bang on, I think it's time Sonic Team is sacked and replaced with Christian Whitehead, that guy just knows what Sonic is all about.
This looks amazing!!! I can hardly wait until the 15th!
Blue spheres are back! Still can't beat them even today. This looks brilliant, I hope they haven't ruined it
this looks much better than what I have experienced with Sonic Mania.
I love how all the polygons have that Sega Saturn look to them. It's just... wow... they thought of everything, then turned it up to 11.
August 15 is almost here. Can't wait.
Forgot to mention the nice chemical plant zone remix.
@Captain_Toad My favourite stage by far was actually the Sonic 2 Half pipe - even the graphics were great! Was (and still) hoping it's included.
I'm actually excited for this game, and I've only just gotten into the franchise in the last few days. I've had 3D Sonic 1 for a while, and I just got the DS collection so I could play 3&Knuckles. I'm also glad to have another game for my Switch because titles for it have been somewhat sparse lately (was gonna get Splatoon 2, but it has such a heavy emphasis on online multiplayer, and my interest in Sonic kind of took priority). I might also try Generations and Lost World at some point. Maybe Colors as well.
I've also been watching Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Boom. They aren't perfect, but they're pretty charming in their own ways!
Staying far, far away from Sonic '06 and Shadow the Hedgehog though...
Edit: Although I do wonder why they aren't calling it Sonic the Hedgehog 5. Would have sounded better than Sonic Mania to me.
I'm excited for Sonic Mania but don't you think it's a little unfair to say Sonic Team should be replaced by Christian Whitehead as he "gets Sonic"? I mean, Sonic Mania is a re-imagining of classic levels, similar to Sonic Generations, all Sonic Mania is doing is adding a few unique twists to levels we've already played. It's like saying Vicarious Visions are the best Crash developers because of the N. Sane Trilogy when the very foundation for the levels and mechanics were already laid out previously by the original games and team.
Like I said, I am looking forward to Sonic Mania as much as the next guy but I think once a Sonic Mania 2 comes out with completely original levels then maybe that statement will hold more weight?
THIS LOOKS AMAZING!!! HURRY UP THE 15TH!
It has all the best influences form the 90's classic Sonic (and since the CD is one of my favorite, I really love the homage it pays in art and music) plus some new design and visual choices that makes it something never seen before.
In the end, for those like me who lived the 32bit days, it feels much like a never released - that should be released back in the day - Sega Saturn Sonic masterpiece!
Nostalgia here is getting higher than the hype!
The first one they showed: This will be soooo painful when you go super fast!
The difference maker for the UFO special stage will be tight controls. Honestly it looks pretty difficult compared with blue spheres. Sure blue spheres gets pretty fast, but it's pretty linear and straight forward which makes the fast speed manageable. Those tight turns look a bit worrying, and the use precise controlling will make all the difference.
Nice to see the blue spheres special stage returning also. Felt the most balanced IMO. As for the last part of the video, I wonder if it automatically sends you back when too slow or if there is a retry button the player manually presses.
