Nintendo Apologizes for Switch Shortages, Promises an Increase in Production

maybe now i can find a switch.

It's okay, Nintendo.
But don't forget to release some Limited Edition Color for Switch such as Pearl White or Golden Zelda theme or Turquoise or Metallic Blue, etc.
Black color is not the best color for Switch in my opinion. Kinda boring.

Every time I was at an Electronics store in Austria, they've had a handful of Switchs. So yeah, if you need a Switch, go there. It may be PAL but still.

The switch is Nintendos goldmine, but now they have to work extremely hard to keep it rolling.
When they have enough production they should reveal the big guns (games) just show the people pokemon rpg, loll and they will try to catch all those switches. 😂

I have been more lucky than others. I got a Switch at launch and I just got another one this week

I keep seeing comments about how in X country you just need to open a closet to find a Switch.
I wonder about the economics of this: Are those countries where the Switch price is a higher percentage of median income ? Or countries where Nintendo has a smaller base ? Or maybe just a difference in buyers habits, with more consoles on shelves in countries where pre-orders aren't the norm.
I can't believe they would keep sending too many Switches in countries where they can't sell them when it's out of stock in others.

Yeah, yeah, Nintendo and Apple draining the whole chip-supply and all that...its just a trick. The console is constantly sold out, thus it looks as if the device is super popular. But is it really that popular? On the other hand, some Switch games already did sell pretty well...

@neufel It wouldnt suprise me if they are shipping to countries with lower sales, at least initially as the micro management required to adjust stock variances to a different region is a ball ache and also takes time to assess the numbers.
If the consoles are shipping from supplier to retailer, then in the beginning thats kind of all Nintendo would care about.

@OorWullie he's talking about the color of the Switch itself (which is black), not the joycons.

I don't really find it necessary to change that color though, because it might not fit as well with the colored joycons. Maybe a white Switch, that could look good.

@neufel I live in a big city in Thailand with 3 game stores and both colours of Switch's are available in each one and have been for a few weeks now.The price is just a little bit above the UK price at £290 which works out at $367.

1 shop is offering a bundle of Switch,BOTW,Pro controller,screen protector and 2 amiibo for 16,690 baht,which converts to $491/ £387.Basically i'd be getting the protector and amiibo for free and saving another $20 on top.

A few weeks ago,a similar bundle was about $50 more expensive so there's obviously not a lot of demand for them here.Either that or they're receiving plenty of stock.

I purchased a copy of BotW like 2 months ago, yet I haven't been able to find a Switch to play it on since launch...

An explosive combo of "Nintendo is for kiddies" mentality + smaller base + Nintendo of Poland doesn't exist + expensive. Who would spend a 1399 PLN (which is more than a half of the average salary in Poland, mind you) for just a gaming console (without any accessories/games), when you can get a powerful tablet/better-than-lower-end notebook/PS4 with three games? Not to mention when any Nintendo system breaks, it's tough luck, you need to do some crazy crap, like sending the system to Germany/Czech Republic for repairs, because, as I said, Nintendo continues to actively ignore our country (and several other Slavic countries).

There are at least 3 Switch units in our local game store - they've been sitting like this, collecting dust, for more than a month. Not to mention large electronic stores (Media Markt, Saturn) are shoving Nintendo products to the distant corners, because nobody gives an eff about them. If I want to buy some Nintendo-related things, I have to scout through eBay/online shops for tolerable prices, because it's so bad around here.

I live in China, and there's no problem getting them here. Independent sellers are getting them somehow out here!

Yeah I totally believe you on that. The price of high tech stuff in Europe stays pretty much the same even when the base salary can be doubled, tripled or even more between countries.

@neufel it's countries like Italy or UK, where videogame culture is really poor and the majority of "gamers" see Nintendo as "the ones who make childish games". You can find tons of Switches everywhere since few people want and buy them

I don't think the shortages have been crippling Switch sales. Maybe by a few thousand a week but nothing major. Are people quick to forget DS and 3DS sales regularly selling 100,000+ units a week in Japan? Switch wouldn't be anywhere near those numbers even without supply constraint. Nintendo also like playing the "it's impossible to find so I want it" card with potential consumers too. That only lasts so long as does the novelty of being a new product.

It is extremely difficult to get one until one day I decided to wake up early in the morning to check if it was in stock. To my surprise I was able to reserve one in the store. I had to wait for a few hours for a confirmation email. Got it after waiting a while and I went to the store for pick-up. Surprisingly they did have it in stock and I picked up Mario Kart. Love the Switch but it shouldn't be so hard to get.

@GoldenGamer88 no such thing as a pal nintendo anymore. Tvs in australia have accepted ntsc or pal inputs for decades now too. The switch has no region locking to hardware or software. You will need a local power adapter though.

Oh and they are also sold out routinely throughout australia! My local retail stores sold out of some games too!

Im from Poland. You can get a switch here - probably because nintendo isnt really popular here. People buy PS4 or xbox in Poland.

Here in Sweden, there are plenty of Switches in every store that sells it.

Well, after E3's showings, it made me finally want to purchase one, and I'd like to by the holidays or 2018's tax return...hopefully I find one by then, but until then, I watch as more games come out and the 'purchase' price goes up and up!!!! Right now, the system, pro controller, screen protector, Zelda, Mario Kart 8, Mario Odyssey, Mario and Rabbids, Kirby (if it's this year or early next), Yoshi (again, this year or early next) and who knows what else will be announced for this year. To me, the Switch is just like the Wii (in the terms of finding one in the US). When the Wii launched over here, you couldn't find it on store shelves for almost a year...pretty much over a year before it stayed on a shelf longer than 5 minutes. The Switch is the same way in that sense, but eventually, maybe I'll walk into a store the right time, they get one in, I'll be the only one in the store at the time, and I can get one...that's the same way I stumbled with a Wii...walked in a week after it's launch, UPS driver dropped a shipment off, one was left, clerk asked if I wanted one, I said yes, bought it!!!! Hopefully more arrive by the holiday, but I'm still thinking that it will sell out during those times, and be another shortage after.

@Anti-Matter Apologies,I read that as if you were talking about the Joy-con for some reason.If you're really bothered about having a different coloured dock,you could just buy a skin for it.Good quality ones pretty cheap and you'd be able to choose your perfect colour.

First of all, Nintendo isn't undersupplying on purpose. Nintendo has every reason to make sure to sell as many Switches as possible in order to grow the userbase and sell more software. We already know Nintendo is competing with mobile manufacturers for parts, so there really is no reason to believe that.

Secondly, people are lining up in Japan to be in a lottery in order to buy the Switch. They can't even just buy it, they have to participate in a lottery! The Switch has been selling out in minutes and that wouldn't happen if "they would just sell a few thousands more".

You have been wrong every time about the Switch, so maybe you should stop making up stuff to suit your agenda.

I can't help but think things will be worse once Splatoon 2 launches.

Amazon UK currently say they'll have stock on the 10th July, the Nintendo store has no stock (mid July) and the physical shops around here have none.

I just hope they deliver stock to Ireland very soon!

It's weird, at launch they were everywhere in the U.K, I never saw them out of stock on Shopto, Amazon, game etc... For more than 2-3 days. But since E3, booooooooooom, everywhere is struggling to stock them.

I just ordered mine from Game. The solo consoles are out of stock but it seems like the ones in bundles are not.

I was out lucky enough to get one at a Best Buy on the day ARMS launched. There was no display anywhere in the store indicating that they had any in stock. I simply asked at the cash and had one brought to me.

It's been difficult to get one in the UK for at least 6 weeks now, as that's how long I've been looking. I have been checking stock tracker websites every few days for a neon one. I think I'll just have to pre-order from somewhere or see if game really have stock for the bundles.

Of the three people I know with them; one is a Nintendo fan who got it on launch, one is a PC gamer who got it a few weeks after launch and one has never owned a console before and got it a few days after launch.

I was tempted to get it on launch day, but still have a big game backlog, so talked myself out of it!

I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere U.S. I was one of maybe 10 people that went to a local Target when they opened on launch day. They sold out that day & never got anymore in.

I wonder how much their competition with Apple for parts plays a roll in the shortage. As long as Nintendo can make Switches they will sell out. So it comes down to how much they can make. Hope they can make their 16 million goal for year 1. If so they will sell 16 million & there still won't be any on store shelves.

Nintendo have no presence in the country, deny us entry into competitions that should be for UK & Ireland. Won't post their products from their UK Online Store to Ireland and will actively cancel orders made through 3rd party vendors that deliver to UK addresses and then forward the goods on to Ireland. This, despite the claim that they represent UK & Ireland.

What are you even talking about? The Nintendo Switch can be found everywhere; large electronic retailers, record stores, even supermarkets!!! And it's been like that since the beginning of May!

The Switch was not in stock for the first two months. That's it. If you've wanted a Switch, you can easily find one here in Norway. Controllers and accessories, on the other hand, are more difficult to come by.

@Anti-Matter I really like my black Switch. Quite understated and smart. As a bloke in my late twenties I wouldn't fancy sitting on a bus with the neon variant. Each to their own I guess.

Sadly yeah... when my old 3DS bit the dust (mobo failure) I had to literally beg in three different places, before finally getting a DIRECT telephone number to one of the Conquest Entertainment execs, to perform a Nintendo ID unlink, otherwise I would lose EVERYTHING I bought on my account/old 3DS. At least all ended well - I don't have my old saves or Streetpass data, but 'least I have access to my past purchases on a new 3DS.

Japan and US hold majority marketshare for Nintendo. As long as those two countries are selling out, Nintendo is in good standing.

In Reykjavik, Iceland you can find them everywhere. People in Iceland don't care about Nintendo. I've never seen a nation more obsessed with Sony!

I went into a store yesterday and there must have been at least 20 Switch consoles sitting (in both colours), Special Edition Zelda, accessories, cases etc.

They even have the NES Mini in stock here - and the accessories!

Well... as a 33 years old male gamer, I prefer Colorful video game device rather than just plain Black color. For most people Black is okay but for me White / Aquamarine / Indigo / Silver are okay as my signature color.

Well splatoon is around the corner, Mario Odyssey in the next 2 months and Xenoblade 2, Pokken DX, Skyrim,ect .

@Joytendo22 I already own a Switch and accessories. Got basically all the games as well atm. The issue in Iceland is the cost - the Switch retails here for 50.000kr (£385) minimum. Games start at 5.500kr (£42). Accessories are ridiculously expensive. Even a 3DSXL costs 40.000kr (£307)!

On the other hand, you can get a PS4 with 2 games for about 35.000kr (£270)...

I agree on weird treatment in Ireland, I have no idea why Nintendo UK won't ship anything to the Republic. Seems like something that shouldn't be an issue nowadays.

It was pretty rough in stores during the Wii u era, Gamestop shoved everything Nintendo into the furthest corner of the store. It has improved a bit with the Switch, but even in Dublin they still don't get a huge amount of stock in each store - I didn't trust my chances of getting a Switch day one without preordering.

They have too much good software out right and it's unfortunate they cannot capitalize on all this demand. The Japanese are having lotteries. It's nuts. I would hate for Splatoon 2 launch to be botched due to few units and there's MHXX right after that. I don't know what Nintendo can do. It's out of their control right now but sounds like they think things will be better in coming months. Here's hoping.

As in many other countries Greece is full of Switches.
Regardless of the economic problems Greece is a PS land, plus the price doesn't help: PS4 €200-250, Switch €330.

it's a shame really. wanting so much to throw money I them and unable to actually do it. My brother wants a switch badly. I'm trying to get a hand on one but with family and my job, i'm always minutes/hours too late either online or in stores. I hate those situations.

Got mine preordered at gamestop at launch. Had wife buy one for a friend when target opened on Arms launch day. I've only seen Switches in stock for launch day, mario kart launch, and arms launch. Not bad for north dakota, usa.

@Anti-Matter Nice. You know what you want. Have you thought about custom transfers? You can find some really great ones online. Do your research though as some have been known to damage the Switch case when removed.

As discussed elsewhere, the issue with the switch stock is the lack of NAND chips. Nintendo has been working on getting more of them, but Apple has been ordering a lot of chips.

My younger brother owns a Switch that he purchased in his rural town in Virginia. Further North, I have not seen a Switch besides his.

.....I guess there's a legit problem this time but I swear this happens every time they release a new system or product lately; and they always have an excuse. They say all the right stuff, but they don't always follow through the way they say they're going to.

Still annoyed that this is still a problem even though I have my Switch. This shouldn't be a problem, Nintendo is hurting themselves due to not making enough units to profit off of them and they need to act before people get annoyed and give up.

I have yet to see a Switch in store. Check occasionally at Best Buy, Target & Gamestop. I've seen a few sales online after a twitter post but I'm usually late to the party & they are already gone. I refuse to pay the $100+ premium I see them selling gir on Amazon. If I could find them readily available I would have purchased two already. Both my kids really want one.

I would actually accept this apology if Nintendo hadn't been poor poor at handling stock over the last 3 years. From amiibos, to limited edition games, to 3ds systems, to the nes classic edition. Nintendo has CONSISTENTLY had a problem with stock. I know this time is down to parts but still. I get tired of Nintendo constantly apologizing while continuing to make the same mistakes 3 years in a row.

Also I really don't like how Gamestop is handling the Switch. I overheard one of the store employees talk about how at another store all brand new Switch units shipped to that store were being sold as bundles and how they lied to customers saying that they didn't have any individual Switches to sell even though they were supposed to sell those units by themselves. It's super scummy

@DrkBndr He rarely is fair, but given his intent on taking it personally that Nintendo is run by morons when it comes to Ireland support/releases I can see why he goes there ripping on them. It's not fair really both to him or people having to read his slanting whining against Nintendo products, but I get it. But to say he's wrong all the time is garbage as well. I was standing in a Target store in Missouri last week when the Nintendo guy came in. He stood near the counter and showed his Switch to two employees. I was carefully studying coin cell batteries so I could evesdrop. After 8 minutes of fun and chittering, he left. The case below the Switch display was STILL empty and restocking never came up in their conversation.

I think Nintendo need to apologise for the price of the accessories also. £80 for a second dock is frankly taking the p*ss...

@Anti-Matter Black bezels around a screen are actually a good thing, they help your eyes focus and get immersed in the images on the screen. It's why movie theaters have a black wall section around the screen. It helps you get absorbed in the screen content.

I think the ability to change Joycon colors really solves the console color problem. I'm sure DOCKS will start coming in colors at some point, but I imagine the tablet portion will always come in only black since you can decorate it with joycons for most of its front surface, and the rear surface doesn't matter that much (and the joycons color that too.) It just simplifies production but still lets you personalize the colors.

Besides, have you actually SEEN the neon joycon colors in person? I don't think my retinas could take much more color overload across the whole machine! Those yellow ones are BRIGHT (And I love them...)

Hard for me to say if NA have the same level of storage that JP have. I normally get twitter alerts when they are in stock online every other week.

They need to also worry about restocking joy-con controllers, mainly the Red/Blue ones. Wish I brought them back when people were in a frenzy over the left joy-con issue. harder to find at msrp then the Switch itself.

@dkxcalibur IIRC, the Wii and the Switch both suffer component shortages, in part because Nintendo produces bespoke hardware that requires generally a handful of bleeding-edge components (the accelerometers were scarce in the Wii era, the mfr of them couldn't keep up with the boom) PS4 and X1 don't suffer the same because they are mostly using off the shelf PC parts that are easy to source. They're more powerful machines, but they're less bleeding-edge emerging tech toy-ish. Though Sony IS having supply problems with PS4 Pro and PSVR, so their problems aren't too different than Nintendo's. Nintendo's is just actually in more demand than those two more niche products.

WiiU never had shortages, and 3DS's shortages were pretty brief. NES Mini and Amiibos are a whole other thing with both being intended as limited runs .

This is why I was SO determined to get the Switch at launch...just to avoid this VERY SITUATION!!!! I had strong feeling the Switch would be like the original Wii situation with constant shortages and quick sellouts.

I often doubt if I should have gotten the Switch at launch. However! Whenever reading articles like this one, it reconfirms to me that I was right to get the Switch at launch!

I'm sorry for those that want a Switch but cant get one yet. Hopefully September Nintendo can have proper flow of Switches for people to buy. They may even have affordable & reasonable special edition bundle Switches by then too...unlike the $500 plus Switch bundles Gamestop annoying sells. Tch.

I did ever saw Neon Joy Cons with my own eyes, from my student's Switch.
Gosh... the Neon Blue color was so Lovely.
But I still can't stand for Black color of Switch's Dock. Boring color.
I have Black Wii U 32 GB too but I still feel dissatisfied because Black color doesn't impress me.
So, From all my electronic devices that I have, only Wii U that have Black color. The others (NDS Lite, Older 3DS XL, New 3DS XL, VIVO Smartphone Y31, Wii + Wiimote, My LED Sharp TV 32 inch) are White.
I'm obsessed with White color when talking about electronic devices.
When most people adore Black, I adore the opposite (White).

Amazon in germany ships them after maybe 3-4 weeks. I ordered mine and after a wait of a few weeks i got it via mail.
Of course, if you are willing to pay a hundered bucks extra you can get it immediatly. Even one of the big electronics retailers here sold them for 350 instead of 329.

That's possibly the only thing Nintendo did that is commendable apart from Zelda this year. I was lucky enough to find a Switch in the first month, but Nintendo better be working on those stocks. Running out of stock everytime is not a thing to be proud of if you supply such a measly amount of units.

@Anti-Matter You might be in luck with docks, I can imagine them doing colors for that. Just not the tablet section. The MHXX bundle in Japan is getting a watermark MH imaged dock. It's till black on black, but it indicates a future of special edition docks is possible.

Well, the white electronics thing seems like it was more a popular Asia thing, though it sounds like Japan is starting to go the other way and buy mostly black now, so I'm guessing the pendulum is swinging and white will go West now?

Eh... I mean the tablet section.
From I saw fixit.com, I can easily open the backside of Switch tablet, painted the backside with my desire color and done.
But I still want to know how to open the front tablet side carefully.
Kinda risky to do spray painting by myself.
I watched from Youtube, some of Switch owner got custom color of Switch. They are looked so beautiful, but the Front tablet section still looked Black, not the Bezel.

I actually prefer white for my gaming systems too. I managed to get the white Wii U Deluxe when it finally became available (refurbished) on NOA's website back in September 2015 (coinciding with Mario Maker's release, which worked out nicely). I also waited for the standard size, white New 3DS to come here. I'm in no rush to buy a Switch, and Mario Maker still keeps me busy, but if they sell one in white here, I'll definitely jump on that.

@Anti-Matter Haha, yeah, that would be a really tricky thing to do, you'd really have to remove the screen and probably the screen lens as well. And to get the screen out, you'd have to remove the actual console bits! If painting I would think masking tape and a small artists brush would be teh way to go....there's not much surface area there at all anyway. Not that I would risk such modding myself

I'd be a little afraid, with paints, that they wouldn't withstand frequent hand contact and friction though. The plastics Nintendo using are sublimated....the color goes all the way through so it can't wear off at all.

Actually I have a speculation behind Super Mario Odyssey Amiibos.
They are (Mario, Princess Peach & Bowser) wearing White Wedding outfits (White Dappers, White Wedding dress) so I assume it would be a White Nintendo Switch bundle with Super Mario Odyssey with White Wedding theme.
If that really true, I will definetely buy that.

Nintendo is facing shortages because the Switch is the first platform they have made where they have to fight for components that companies like Apple also use. Previous Nintendo platforms like the 3DS and DS never faced these type of production issues because both of those handhelds used ancient and custom technology.

The "Nintendo is limiting stock on purpose" conspiracy has no basis whatsoever and is nothing more than fanboy drivel.

I'm sorry, but absolutely nobody believes Nintendo can sell 100,000+ Switches per week on a regular basis in Japan. Only the DS managed to do that in 2006/2007; no other mega successful system in Japan (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, 3DS, PS, PS2, PSP) was able to achieve such a blistering sales pace.

To suggest that the eventual non-supply constrained Switch will sell badly because it won't reach peak DS-level sales is almost as ludicrous as the "Nintendo is limiting stock on purpose" conspiracy.

I was just in the Netherlands, and the Switch is near impossible to find there, like way worse than the US. In fact, I saw games stores advertising that they would buy used Switches for like 360€, which is over $400. I don't believe in the 'Nintendo purposefully holding back stock' conspiracy nonsense, but I do wonder how they decide to allocate stock, because it seems like some in countries they're not scarce at all, and in others they are all but impossible to find. I got mine at launch, and have seen them for sale off and on (if you live in the NW, check out Fred Meyer, they pretty much always have at least one or two when I go in there), and I'm sure it varies by region, but as scarce as they seem in the US, we have it better than a lot of countries, if you're willing to call around and set up alerts on stock tracking websites, they're not too difficult to find. I don't think it's as bad as the Wii launch, I doubt we'll see people lining up almost two years after launch.

And yeah, I got the deluxe 32gb version in white here in the U.S., straight from Nintendo's online store almost two years ago. Not sure how long they were selling it, but I jumped at the chance to get one.

Plenty of Switches to go around here in Australia. I'm strongly considering buying one if I get a decent tax return.

I have been casually browsing the isles at Target, Walmart, Gamestop, and Frys since the switch released and I have yet to see one for sale anywhere in Las Vegas. The stores typically have a small space set aside for the switch with 2 or 3 games for sale, but no hardware or demo to be seen. This is the first Nintendo system that I haven't been able to see in person at stores. So far for me the Switch only exists in hype and rumors.

Here in Chile there were stock problems in March, but they're normal now. You can walk in any store and buy one, stores are even pushing bundles to get people to buy!

The lack of sales isn't due to lack of interest, though. The system is around US$500 (Stupid Juegos de Video Latam....Grr) and games are between US$70-US$80 each, and the system alone is half the average income.

I think that it may get a bigger push in Christmas, but the Wii U did cede a lot of ground to Sony/MS. Plus, the lack of sales from Nintendo also works against them and not having official support isn't nice either.

Everyday I check online for any stock, but always come empty handed. I'm pretty sure this shortage is causing the sales to go down for each week. The other day I checked my local walmart for any stock, but I only found a poorly managed Wii u section with switch accessories and no games. I asked a store clerk if there were any switch units available but was told that they will be getting new stock in the next few days, pretty sure those sold before they even appeared on shelves. I live in Arizona.

If that's the case then probably there are people who bought the game with the intention to buy the system at a later date, when its cheaper. I could myself seeing doing that with Mario odyssey and Mario+rabbids. However, Mario odyssey will stay in print for a long time.

Waiting for the Switch to get cheaper might take ages though. Only if Nintendo can't get rid of Switches anymore.

It's ok, Nintendo. Core gamers know your "get it while supplies last" is a common practice. In Pennsylvania the Switch is not hard to find. My local Walmart gets around five units on a weekly bases since launch.

@Henmii Did you miss the part where it says the Switch is the fastest selling console of Nintendo's history? Yes, the games are also selling pretty well, but I would say the console is wanted as well.
