Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th November)

Tyranexx

Outside of my twice a year "test older game systems and see if they still work" session today - which usually involves firing up a game or two from each system library if the machine functions - I'm still working on Pokemon Scarlet with an occasional side order of Hades on Switch. I've reached Area Zero in the former and LOVE the group dynamic, character development, and increasing unease in this area. And the music....The area theme is hands down my favorite track in the game. I'm still doing the occasional run through the Underworld in the latter, but I'll admit the game is starting to feel more repetitive. I've at least cleared the final boss once but would like to finish the main story. Which means more escape attempts.

There's a last hurrah of sunny mid 70 degrees F/~25 degrees C weather both yesterday and today in my corner of the US, so I might get outside for a bit too. It was glorious on my lunch trail speed walk yesterday.

Happy gaming!

Re: Trails In The Sky 2nd Chapter Scheduled For 2026 Release

Tyranexx

@OwenGamer22 That's a fair take. I was gifted Trails In The Sky FC a couple years ago on Steam but haven't got around to it yet. I love lore and world building in games - there's a reason I've fallen in love with series like Xenoblade and Ys - but not everything clicks with everyone. Time is also a factor. As much as I love RPGs, I have to be picky about which ones I do play since some can be very long. If doesn't help that I like exploring and talking to almost everyone I find.

I think you've convinced me to jump in with my Steam copy for now. I appreciate the feedback!

Re: Preview: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Is Great, But I Want To Kill One Of Its Characters

Tyranexx

Definitely looking forward to this one. I'm less bothered by the fact there's a chatty tagalong (as long as he isn't TOO chatty) and more by the fact that it sounds like one of my least favorite things in gaming - escorting characters who are bad at defending themselves - is in MP4. As long as there aren't a lot of these shenanigans, I think I'll have a great time.

Since the article alludes to it....It should also be said that, despite its flaws, I enjoyed some of the dialogue in Metroid: Other M. I just wish there had been more meaning behind it. Yes, I'm one of those folks that LIKES the game lol. I'll admit it's weak for a Metroid game - I'd played most other series entries at the time before finding it for $7 new online - but there are still some good ideas in it. Even if some of the execution could have been better.

Re: Trails In The Sky 2nd Chapter Scheduled For 2026 Release

Tyranexx

Still not sure if I should start with the Trails In The Sky remakes or play through the originals via Steam first. I'm sure the remakes improve on the originals in nearly every way, but I can't help but consider how jarring it will be to shift back to the Crossbell duo (on Switch) from that. Plus, it hasn't been confirmed whether 3rd Chapter is getting remade as well. If fan demand isn't enough for that one, I could always shift back to Steam I suppose. 🤔

This is also assuming 2nd Chapter releases on Switch 1 since that's the most recent Nintendo platform I own.

Re: Pokémon Pokopia Reveals "Peculiar" New Forms In Extended 10-Minute Trailer

Tyranexx

This looks charming and really hammers home the Dragon Quest Builders vibes. Particularly with the workbench and visuals. It looks a bit more laid-back and life sim-like than DQB, though I wonder with the teased unique Pokemon at the end of the video if the plot will take some interesting turns like in DQB2. I can't speak for this game, but the DQB series has much more to it than "Minecraft, but with a Dragon Quest skin".

I truly want to play this game and likely will unless honest impressions around launch are lackluster. Unfortunately, my choices are (checks) digital and digital, so it appears I'll be waiting for a significant discount first. Which I fully realize will take awhile.

Re: Square Enix Switch 2 Launch Title Scores A Limited-Time Discount

Tyranexx

@MJF Enjoy! Bravely Second is my favorite of the two since it furthered the story and cast from the first game (along with new characters), had a beyond addictive mini-game (Chompcraft), and had a few mechanical improvements from the first game. They're decent JRPGs IMO. Not in my top favorites I'll admit, but I'd definitely revisit them again.

Re: Square Enix Switch 2 Launch Title Scores A Limited-Time Discount

Tyranexx

I'll stick with my 3DS copy. I love how the 3D effect is handled in both it and Bravely Second. I am glad more people get the opportunity to try this game however. It isn't perfect, but I love the battle system, am not particularly bothered by the second half of the game (IYKYK), and enjoy the occasional 4th wall break in this series.

I DO still need to play the related in name only Bravely Default II on Switch though....

Re: Nintendo Teases A New Lego 'Legend Of Zelda' Set, Possibly Including Ganon

Tyranexx

Welp, so much for not buying anymore LEGO sets anytime soon. I really enjoyed The Great Deku Tree set and do plan to build the OoT side of it soon. Putting together the BotW Deku Tree was fun and contained many nods to the game during the build process too, not just in the final result.

...Though I couldn't help but think Link's Tree House from OoT would have worked better as a separate, cheaper set. Hopefully these sell well enough for LEGO/Nintendo to consider smaller, cheaper sets in the future.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th November)

Tyranexx

Why yes, I'll take a lax weekend, thank you.

  • Pokemon Scarlet - I've earned all gym badges but still need to take on the Elite Four. I wrapped up the Path of Legends plot and am almost done with Starfall Street as well. They definitely stepped up the writing from Sword/Shield. Not a high bar to meet, but I've been impressed at times how this game handles some of its dialogue. Starfall Street especially resonates with me. I HAVE run into more performance issues and even an endless black loading screen after fighting my last Titan (found a solution online that involved undocking my Switch for this part), so those are a mark against the game. But the game is still FAR from unplayable. I've definitely encountered worse.
  • Hades (Switch) - I'm still doing the occasional run when I'm in the mood. I made it past my previous wall (Theseus is such an arrogant, egotistical soul. Asterius is too good for him.) and all the way to the final boss, even thought I had won until the game not too surprisingly pulled a "Phase 2". But hey, I almost made it! I think I'm at 35 runs or so. It's a pretty fun game, but not one I want to play for more than an hour or two a session. Edit: Made it past the final boss! But - unsurprisingly - I'm not finished escaping the Underworld.

Seriously, while Sc/Vi's performance issues are worth giving TPC constructive feedback over, you'd think the game was nigh unplayable from how some go on about it online. I'm finding that's FAR from the case. There's a decent game buried underneath some of the visual jank. Scarlet is one of the better Pokemon games I've played in recent years, though Pokemon Legends: Arceus still takes the Switch crown in my book.

Happy gaming!

Re: Site News: Nintendo Life Turns 20 Today!

Tyranexx

Happy birthday, NL! Hopefully this site will celebrate 30, 40, even 50 years! I appreciate all the work that goes into this network.

I found this site WAAAAAY back around 2011 or so when I was itching for more Nintendo news, specifically regarding Skyward Sword and some obscure DSiWare titles I was eyeing; the site used to review almost everything on a Nintendo system. Finally made an account in 2015. I used to use IGN as my primary news source for everything gaming except Pokemon (that honor still goes to Serebii), but their Nintendo coverage got worse over time. I jumped off the IGN train ages ago when they started covering a LOT more than just games and also lost a lot of great writers. I mostly use NL and VGC for game news. Destructoid used to be part of my rotation, but unfortunately a change in ownership sunk that ship.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC Scores December Release Date

Tyranexx

I'm waiting until I pick up a Switch Deux to get this, which should hopefully allow plenty of time for them to release a cart that includes DLC like previous Pokemon releases (or at least most of it - see Scarlet/Violet). I'm just now playing through my Scarlet + DLC copy, so I can happily wait.

If an all-in-one cart never materializes, I think I'm okay with letting this DLC go. I'm not a DLC person unless it's free content or it is extremely compelling for me to buy. Which is rare.

Re: Switch 2 Has The Largest Third-Party Software Lineup Ever For New Nintendo Hardware

Tyranexx

On paper, the Switch 2 third-party support has been decent. It could always be better, but this can be said for practically any console. I only dreamed of seeing a few released or announced games on Nintendo consoles. Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the biggest pleasant surprises for me.

Unfortunately, the execution for many leaves a lot to be desired thanks to GKCs. Not as big a deal for me if extra Switch 2 storage was cheaper and if they at least behaved as install media like PS5 games, but as it currently stands....If I have to rely on a DRM key, I'd rather go the digital route for these gaps in my library. Which will mean PC, where the storage is cheaper and my trust in those established account systems is stronger. It's obvious we're heading towards a digital future, but they really need to improve consumer protections before we get there.

All this is still better than streaming only, however. I'm not against streaming as AN option for those who want it. If it becomes THE option, that's the day I become a retro-only gamer.

Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Major Upcoming Switch 2 Games

Tyranexx

Seems like a pretty solid lineup to me that can scratch an itch for almost everyone. I still struggle to understand how the Switch 2 "has no games". Unless folks choose to also ignore backwards compatibility. To me, BC is a blessing since most of my backlog is on Switch.

There are a few reasons why I'm waiting on grabbing a Switch 2, but the game lineup isn't one of them.

Re: Switch 2 Sells Over 10 Million Units, Nintendo Increases Forecast Even Further

Tyranexx

Seems like a very positive report to me. And yeah, the original Switch family's sales are understandably lower, but hitting just shy of 2 million units sold after over 8 years on the market is nothing to sneeze at.

I doubt the Switch 2 will lose momentum anytime soon. Some like yours truly are biding their time for a special edition console (not just the pack-in bundles so far) or a light hardware revision. In the meantime, I have more than enough games to play on Switch 1 that, thanks to the miracle of backwards compatibility, I'll (mostly) be able to play on Switch 2.

Re: Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii Has Been Awarded One Of Japan's Highest Honours

Tyranexx

Very well deserved. I love how humble Horii's statement is. He has always come across as kind-hearted and respectful in interviews IMO.

Dragon Quest is one of my favorite RPG franchises - and I still need to play a few mainline entries! Doubt I'll ever get to Dragon Quest X unless the offline version ever receives a Western release, but I'll admit I'm not confident at this point.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (1st November)

Tyranexx

Outside of some yardwork, I have a somewhat lax weekend. Which means more Pokemon Scarlet and Hades, both on Switch. I'm about to tackle my 7th gym in Pokemon, have 1 titan left to knock out, and 2 Team Star bases left to dismantle. In Hades, I'm having a great time but have hit a wall in Elysium with an infamous pair of bosses: Theseus and Austerius. Makes me wish they'd let me retry the fight instead of sending me back to the start.

Happy gaming!

Re: Pokémon Legends Z-A Update Planned For November, Will Address "Known Issues"

Tyranexx

@Dr_Lugae That is definitely an issue. I don't recall if I ever ran into that glitch back then. Normally I'd restart the game if it had been a very long time (months usually) since I last played. The closest time-related issue I've experienced with that batch of games is the "The internal battery has run dry" message. Glad they patched it despite through rudimentary means at the time.

My apologies; I think I got the Legends: Z-A DLC mixed up with something else. Can't say I'm pleased about the DLC announcement before the game even released, but TPC is far from the only guilty party in this regard.

Re: Pokémon Legends Z-A Update Planned For November, Will Address "Known Issues"

Tyranexx

@Dr_Lugae Also a fair point. I'm not particularly bothered by bug fixes in particular, especially since I know it's nigh impossible to account for every single issue during development and testing. I'm not in the video game industry but do code for a living, so I definitely find that aspect relatable despite the best of intentions.

It's the incomplete, rushed releases with day one updates (BDSP) and content intentionally held back as day one DLC (this game) that tend to bother me. I'm not against DLC, especially stuff that comes way later after a game releases. But I'd rather have a game spend more time in the oven than rushed out in a half-finished state.

Out of your examples, I played many of those games long after release and didn't know about those bugs. The exception is Ruby/Sapphire since I played Ruby back in the day - I still own the cartridge in fact. I'm curious; what was the berry tree glitch? I assume it's patched in my copy since I'm positive I did a couple of trades between that game and my LeafGreen cart.
