Thinking of the types of games that would benefit from VR the market doesn't seem all that large. There is a market for VR, but with the number of competitors jumping in, all of them can't survive. I'm interested in watching the market, but there is nothing yet that is very compelling.
Clearly they want to keep the NX features under-wraps even longer - but I don't see how that can actually change anything. This seems to suggest Dragon Quest XI will launch on NX, which would win over the Japanese market. I hope Nintendo engages their other market equally.
Given the market share of the West, this seems like a bad idea to have them structured so lowly. It probably doesn't change much from the present, but perhaps they should change some things going forward.
Japan as a culture still has lots of racism and misinterpretations of other cultures. I don't understand why people are so angry at keeping a poor representation of a historically belittled culture in a video game. Japan needs to grow up, faster than it is. I'm not saying they are all one in the same (because that's racist). But the culture in Japan has much improving to do when representing many other cultures. This is a light case, but still one nonetheless.
@mjc0961 If the game told you where to go it would be worse. You are supposed to get lost, how else do they teach you to explore so thoroughly on your own? And when you do find what you need, the reward is all yours because there were not hints. They give you a map to help see places you haven't been, or at least areas that could be checked because they are blank. Much improved on from Metroid but still rewarding discovery.
If the wall jumps were the same as Mega Man X that would also be bad because the player would discover them sooner on their own. You should have no idea that you can wall jump until you meet the Etecoons. Wall Jumping breaks the game, so a player shouldn't know they can until late in the game and then they can use it on replays. My problem with the wall jump mechanics is that they are slightly different in Zero Mission and Fusion, so I always need to practice when I switch games. Super Metroid's does require some practice, but can easily become something you nail 99% of the time.
The game is not perfect, but it is a masterpiece. Music and visuals still do well today. The controls are very tight. The game is nearly glitchless. The game really rewards you for replaying because you can start to master your own path through the game - another reason they don't tell you where to go, you later learn you can go multiple places with different sequences. I wish I could forget Super Metroid and play it afresh like it was my first time. That's when it was most magical. Learning you could wall jump and looking for ways to break the sequence of the game. Axiom Verge did satisfy that feeling though
I love the Wii U and I'm sad that Star Fox Zero pushed, but I can handle it. Xenoblade X is going to take up so much of my time anyway. My backlog is crazy huge, so I don't mind getting some extra time to clear it. Now if I could just stop playing Splatoon ... yeah, no, that won't happen.
What? I love that Japanese culture is majorly infused throughout this game. It's such a good way of giving a real pulse to the universe. I haven't watched the video yet, but I love Shachihoko and I think the play or words in the Japanese mode is excellent: Gachi-hoko.
Yeah, Gachi is kind of like Super. Here it more or less mean, "the real deal". So more serious battles. The opposite of casual. It will also lead to a great pun for the upcoming Rainmaker mode. In Japanese it will be called Gachi-hoko, which is a play on the word Sachihoko. Sachihoko are mystical fish that are said to cause rain and can save important buildings from burning down. The rain maker it's self is a Sachihoko fish.
It's always odd to me when people just flat out say Nintendo is struggling. They have some financial issues and aren't as successfully as they had been quite recently. But as far as their ability to make fun experiences, they are still on their A game. They make some of the most fun games I've ever played, even still.
"75th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders" - just let that sink in for a bit. Trolls will troll. Fortunately they don't (and probably can't) run a company in the kind of market as video game hardware manufacturing and software development (not that Nintendo has been doing that the last 75 years). Nintendo constantly takes risks and will always continue to do so. I think they are a thrilling company to follow and support. There is very low risk is releasing the PS4 when comparing it to the PS3. Even Fumito Uedo said that the PS4 resolved no technical limitations when compared to the PS3. It's literally just up scaled hardware, which is good an all, but very safe when it comes to hardware iterations. Sony is basically 'gimmick' free, which nearly guarantees the next Call of Duty will play like that last. And sell well. That market clearly exists and Sony handles it well. I just find it a bit boring, especially after gaming for over 25 years.
The Kraken is really easy to avoid if they use it any distance away from you. I just use it as a "get me the heck out of here" tactic mostly. A-,A, and A+ players can almost always avoid the Kraken and they will melt you once it's over. I find it only useful to attack other rollers, especially the Dynamo Rollers. It can make snipers run and sometimes get them if they are too focused.
It doesn't matter how much other consoles sell, they still 'steal' Nintendo's ideas. I don't really believe that they are stealing, though. If you release a product to the world anyone can take from it what they want in their own design. Nintendo made the d-pad, brought good analog control to consoles, rumble, 4 controllers to a system, touch screen gaming, wireless controllers, camera control on the controller, and countless other hardware/software features. Yeah they have all been 'stolen' but it really has made the gaming world better. Sony uses almost all of those design aspects in their hardware and people like Sony, so thank you Nintendo. Sony had the right to modify their design as they saw fit. What Nintendo wants is just to have that edge on a new design as long as possible so that they can drive sales, so that all makes sense.
I still plan on getting this one. It's too interesting and unique for me to pass up. Controls I can get around because I've been gaming since before they got good as a standard.
It seems to please people Nintendo will need to do the whole Metroid: Fusion & Metroid Prime bit. Dually releasing old and new at the same time - or at least having them announced in the same window. That way, everyone can go, "Yay, Nintendo still loves my favorite franchise!" and "Nintendo is innovating with their powerful IP!". There is no other way than that.
I 100% agree with no voicechat in Splatoon. It would make recon very overpowered and I know many would abuse it to give away the location of all opponent to their team. Perhaps Nintendo will have to remove it anyway once friends are teaming up and using Skype on the side. I like the option for voicechat in games, but Splatoon was designed without it and adding it will break the design.
I really enjoyed Splatzones. It was much more intense than Turf War. The high of getting a knockout was thrilling, but the low of being knocked out was rough. I really enjoyed it but it was nice to go back to Turn War and have a more relaxed experience, too. I surprisingly did best with the Krak On Roller, so I think I will keep trying to perform that "roll".
I bought it day one on Steam, but I will still buy it day one if it comes to either Nintendo System. I own multiple versions of almost every other Metroid game, so why not?
