Heart Machine's Alex Preston has confirmed that the Wii U version of Hyper Light Drifter has been officially cancelled, along with the PS Vita edition.
The title was previously described as being "in limbo" following development issues and Preston cites problems regarding the porting process as the reason for its ultimate demise. Transferring the game to Nintendo's console would require it being built from the ground up (it's made using Game Maker) in an entirely different engine, a considerable task.
Preston - who has previously documented health issues - says that he is having to prioritise his own well being after pouring his "heart and soul" into the project for the past three years - that includes porting the game to PS4 and Xbox One, a process which took a lot longer than expected.
Those who supported the Kickstarter in the hope that they'd get the game on their Wii U consoles can switch to the PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 or Xbox One editions. The developer is also happy to provide refunds to unhappy backers.

Some things in life are more important than games. It's disappointing as it looked like a great game. He was very honest, sincere and sounds as upset as anybody else. And at least he took the time to explain, apologise and has offered alternatives or refunds. That's more than some Kickstarter projects have done.
Very disappointing news, I was really looking forward to playing this on my Wii U.... all the best to Alex , hope he makes a speedy recovery.
well there is always hope for an NX version. He could have approached another developer to help port the game. I recall the Undertale creator saying a Wii U version was possible there would just need to be someone willing to port the game
Dang it, that's terrible. 😭
Guess it's time to get that gaming PC I committed myself to buying when I backed crowdfunded games that were PC only...
Unfortunate news, but no game is worth literally dying over, so this is the least upset I've been over failed crowdfunding promises.
Well, at least Super Mario Run is coming to mobile. . . .
Also, the situation doesn't seem quite as negative towards Nintendo's flop of a platform when it's made clear that the PS Vita version has also been cancelled. It makes the Wii U seem just a little bit less pathetic and a little bit less of the "only if I can really bothered" option or like the "mentally challenged cousin that no one talks about". Basically, The developer is pretty much just stopping with any further versions after getting it out on the main/obvious platforms of choice, and that seems fair enough to me.
As someone who works with Game Maker, I can totally understand the developer not wanting to spend another X months trying to force a version of the game onto the likes of PS Vita and Wii U, especially when these consoles are pretty dead at this point anyway and the game possibly won't even see enough downloads/sales to make the extra effort worthwhile.
Doesn't GameMaker have the ability to export as HTML5? Which I believe is compatible with the Wii U.
Its like no one thinks Nintendo Killed the Wii U dead enough yet so third parties keep digging the corpse up to kill it more.
3DS already stole severs of the Wii U's "organs"
Please have mercy.
seems like a lot of developers shouldn't have even mentioned a Wii U version if they either weren't technically proficient enought to port it or there never was a feasible reason to do so due to economics.
If Nintendo worked with the one man team who made Axiom Verge get the game on their system why couldn't they have done more Heart Machine? Hopefully the NX will get a version of the game, but it's sad that all the work they had done to try and port the game was basically for nothing at this point.
Having backed the game back then, I'm rather disappointed with this decision. But I'll find time to listen to his full explanation before writing anything unreasonable.
Maybe some other developer out there could offer to carry the can and finish the game off. Seems such a shame to let all that effort go to waste.
Pretty bummed, but totally understand why he made this call. When it was first revealed that the game might not make it to Wii U, I figured I'd get the Vita port instead (which was also just cancelled). Ah well.
At least I can still play as Drifter in Runbow. That's something!
Disappointing, but we saw it coming. I really like the personal explanation. I have the game on Steam so fortunately I do get to enjoy it.
I won't be playing this game, then. Oh well. I wish him well.
Man, seems like the guy faced quite a few difficulties. Now i wanna buy it on PS4 to support his hard work.
disappointed, been waiting for the Wii U release to pick this up. But I understand. Wish more developers would be this open and honest
Pity but sure his health is a million times more important than a game.
I'll switch mine to a PC copy instead.
Aw no Vita version. Oh well, if it's to help preserve his health there is no problem with these cancellations. I'll just get the PC version.
This game is wonderful. Really warrants a play. It's a shame difficulties prevented its Wii U release.
A huge shame that the Wii U version isn't happening, but it's perfectly understandable. I still have my PC, so I'll get the game there. Hopefully, he feels better.
it's a shame, but on the other hand his health is more important. and lucky for me i can get the pc version for this game. (if my pc can run it.)
sucks that he sick though, i wish him luck of getting better
Unsurprising, but it's nice to see how he's making it up to fans. I'd highly suggest everyone pick this up on another platform of their choice, it's fantastic.
@shaneoh I think it's possible to get games made in gamemaker to work in HTML5, but it doesn't seem like an easy or straightforward process, at least not in all cases. (I've never used gamemaker, but I have significant experience with HTML.) However, the Nintendo Web Framework is built on HTML5, but it has some platform-specific features that might further complicate the issue vs porting straight to HTML5.
Well that's too bad, but yeah, not surprising. Probably get it on PC instead.
Oh good, now I don't have to feel bad about buying the PS4 version. At least there's still a Vita version in the works- oh dangit!!!
Just get an Xbox controller and play it on Steam!
Oh no, I donated on Kickstarter specifically because of the Wii U... So disappointing.
At least he took the time to explain what happened.
@jrob23
His health is not doing well at all. I think this is a situation where, had things worked out better, he would have been more than willing to make a Wii U port.
but you're right. There are plenty of other developers who fit your description.
btw, Hyper Light Drifter is fantastic. It really has a lot of love put behind it.
Why did he offer Wii U and Vita if he was using some obscure engine?
Damn shame. Played it on PS4, fantastic title.
@Pablo17 Yeah, I'm glad I'll be able to get the refund too.
I think my name's already in the credits for the other versions, though.
@Utena-mobile You have the game? Any chance you'd be able to check if my name's in the credits?
Total bummer. May he rest well.
Oh that's a shame, I was looking forward to playing this on the Wii U.
Guess I'll just have to settle for playing it on the PC.
@Nintendood
Unfortunately, I've played it but I don't have a copy yet. (T_T )
I'm planning on getting it in a couple of weeks though. I can look for you but by then you probably have found out. btw, thank you for backing it. (^_^ )/
I do wish him a speedy recovery, but I'll pass on the game.
@shaneoh
Yes. Theoretically, it would be possible to use that HTML5 export to publish to Wii U. In practice, it's not worth it. You have to do a lot of editing to the exported HTML5 file to make it work. A ridiculous amount. Editing out tons of browser-only garbage, removing some stuff that stops it from working on Wii U, replacing a lot of code with Wii U-specific code. Even if you get it to work, it might lag depending on how you programmed your game. If you want to publish for Wii U, it's a much less daunting and time-consuming task to go ahead and learn HTML5 outright.
Source: I tried it before. It's not fun.
Is it just me or did anyone else hear this as Eric Cartman's voice "Screw you guys, I'm going home, ah ah ah, screw you, home."
@nacho_chicken @-DEMISE-
I suspected there would be technical issues, but thought I'd throw the question out there any way. Cheers for the answers.
"Prease Undastan"
No worries Alex. Thank you for all the effort you put into this game. I picked it up on PC and it is AMAZING! Please take care of your health! Thank you for sharing this WONDERFUL game with us. If you have not played this game, you don't even need a really high power PC to run the game. If you have not played the game yet get it on PC.
Bummer. But I really do hope that Alex's health gets better. That's really top priority in all circumstances.
Son of a gun...saw that a million miles away. Biggest gaming let down for me of the past 3 years.
Darn. I was going to double dip. I love this game so much that I bought the soundtrack(wish it were the actual in game music and not an acoustic cover).
This game has style and atmosphere!
The music was like a dark late 80s, early 90s anime movie soundtrack. Like music from "Vampire Hunter D"
Ashame I would have got the game for the Wii U but now no chance.
booo, well my purchase is canceled too then I guess
What a shame, but understandable.
Worth getting any way you can though. One of my favorite games this year.
I'm gonna play it on PS4 Pro. A great hope for this game.
this has ruined my day. i have no other system top play it on and was really really looking forward to this.
@YANDMAN - no profanity, thanks.
Welp, the only way this game was accessible to me was the vita and Wii U :/ ah well I suppose, I was interested on the game but now I have no way to play currently it seems so I'm gonna do the next best thing watch let's plays of the game , it's like the same of playing the game except it isn't
Well, que sera sera. These things happens. Would've enjoyed it, but I'm sure I'll find a way to play it.
I thought this was cancelled months ago. Well, I wish this game creator good luck in getting healthier. Maybe I'll get the chance to play Hyper Light Drifter on another system, at friends or something.
Yay for GameMaker!
Want to upgrade your game to 60fps? Sorry, you can't unless you started the project at 60fps to begin with.
Want to port your game to other platforms? Get ready to fight our program with tooth and nail! Then, completely recreate your project on a much better, more stable, program!
It's a shame. Still my game of the year.
Atleast he have the balls to tell this on a video, and also refund the money to backers.
Can't complain about this at all. And besides.. Its coming to a bunch of systems anyway.
Man! This one stings but as much as I wanted this game, it's not worth someone dying. If anyone questions or doubts this not coming to Wii U, all they need to know is that he cared and felt guilty enough to make this video. If he was like the many other developers who chose not to do this for the typical reason then he would have not even said anything. You can tell that this is eating him up....that sucks! I wish him better health in the future.
Got it on PC! Great game.
"The developer is also happy to provide refunds to unhappy backers"
That's nice of him, you don't see that happening often!
That's definitely disappointing, but at least he's cancelling it for a legitimate reason, and even offering refunds for backers. I'll just keep an eye out for a sale on the PC version.
More projects will be cancelled for wii u too..
NX perhaps?
