Splatoon has a decent splattering (sorry) of modes nowadays, with frequent updates over the course about three months adding plenty of content. A recent addition was the Rainmaker mode in Ranked Battles, in which you try to take possession of the powerful relic and progress into the opposition's territory.
For those that like a little cultural education with their gaming, there may be interest in the origins of the relic's design and the mode's name. In a series called 'Culture Shock' on the YouTube channel The Game Theorists, this very topic is explored. This isn't the first video in this rather neat series, but is certainly interesting in terms of shedding light on the history and cultural relevance of the mode.
Check it out below and let us know what you think.

First and no one cares.
So Rainmaker it's a name that actually respect the cultural origins of the weapon and make a ton of sense?
The italian name just turned in a terrible choice then, "Bazookarp" is just a terrible pun with no history in it, it's kinda sad that some localization teams decided to ignore the cultural references in favor of fish jokes (as if the game doesn't already have enough of them >.>; ).
What? I love that Japanese culture is majorly infused throughout this game. It's such a good way of giving a real pulse to the universe. I haven't watched the video yet, but I love Shachihoko and I think the play or words in the Japanese mode is excellent: Gachi-hoko.
I recently heard about this not too long ago went on exchange to Nagoya a while ago so I knew a bit. Since I didn't know a whole lot about the shachihoko at first though, I thought they were all gold haha.
Cool vid. Thanks for spotlighting it.
Interesting! It's amazing how many jokes and references are in Splatoon; a very well done job by the developers.
@BakaKnight Bazookarp sounds awesome, though!
Really interesting article and video. Thank you! it reminds me of playing the original Animal Crossing back on the game cube. That gave me such culture shock to just about everything from the Japanese statues to the Raffle at the store. Which is almost identical. Went to the osaka pokemon center last month and did the same raffle as Tom Nook did with the balls and rolling it was really cool! That never happens where I'm from.
Interesting but I wish it was a person and not a cartoon
Interesting stuff!
Interesting vid, I learned something new today.
Great video, I'm a big fan of Gaijin Goombah.
Very nice. I heard the gold Cheep Cheeps in the Japanese stage of 3D World are supposed to be one of these Sachis.
I love how the Rainmaker name sounds, it gives me a Led Zeppelin vibe (Rain song+D'yer Mak'er) and the mode itself is amazing. Stay Fresh!
I really dislike a lot of "Gaijin Goomba's" far reaches and I think he taints MatPat's channel along with the other jokers, but this video was good because it was true. Having this knowledge makes the rainmaker mode a little bit more enjoyable
Is there anything more satisfying than inking narrow path right through the opposing teams web and single handedly dunking the rainmaker with 2-4 enemies firing from all sides?
No, there isn't. One of my favorite multiplayer modes in years. Brings me back to the glory days of Push and Murderball in Half Life and Team Fortress Classic.
@Aurumonado Guess I'm the opposite. I find MatPat obnoxious and irritating (You wanna talk far-reaching? That's all Game Theory is), but Gaijin Goombah's speculative rants don't bother me in the slightest. I mainly like Aki's Pixel Pets, but he's cool, too.
