That’s the problem right now, a lot of new Switch releases seem to be launching with performance issues. I know a lot of it is down to optimisation, and I really do love my Switch, but isn’t it finally time we get some new hardware?
My two daughters (aged 27 and 19) and I play MK8D together every Saturday when they visit, so I’ve been sworn not to play the new tracks until the weekend when they come home. I’m so tempted, but I’ll just have to wait.
If only there was an option to flip the games utterly mediocre home screen icon – literally the ONLY thing I didn’t like about the entire game. Well, apart from omitting certain staff from the credits, I guess.
@LikelySatan Thanks my friend. Though I tried, unsuccessfully, to pick up the Wii version of Metroid Prime Trilogy to play via backwards compatibility when I had a Wii U, I’m kinda glad I didn’t. So happy to be experiencing this for the first time via such a fabulous remaster instead, and I’m super enjoying every last moment.
Slightly later than everybody else, I finally picked up the fabulous Metroid Prime Remastered this week, and I’ve been utterly engrossed ever since. I regularly have anywhere up to three or four games on the boil at any given time, but since starting Prime Remastered, I’ve been enjoying it so much that I’ve dropped every other game like a sack of spuds! This is the first time I’m playing a Prime game, too.
I’ll probably get roasted for this, but I’m really not feeling TOTK at all. I hope to be proven wrong, but nothing stands out as 'better' than BOTW, which I’m burnt out on. Metroid Prime Remastered updated visuals look very dated and the Switch clearly needs a power bump more than ever. Maybe it’s just late and I’m getting grumpy, but for me, the best thing from that entire Direct was Ghost Trick HD. Only went downhill from that point on. Glad for everyone who loved it though.
The most beautiful Metroidvania you’ve ever played?
Maybe it looks way better in person, but for me, these visuals aren’t a patch on either of the Ori games, Hollow Knight, SteamWorld Dig 2, Dead Cells, Guacamelee! 2, Owlboy, Yoku’s Island Express or a certain Metroid Dread to name a few.
Everyone has their own particular tastes though, and the headline did make me open the page, so there’s that.
This take is probably unpopular, but personally, I’m gutted. I was really hoping for a Dig 3 or Heist 2, so this announcement is a major disappointment for me.
Like so many gamers, I absolutely adored the aforementioned Dig and Heist games, and after the relative disappointment of Quest, which I thought was pretty mediocre, I was really hoping Thunderful would take the SteamWorld franchise back to one of their most popular genres.
Having said all that, the game certainly does look gorgeous from a visual standpoint and, come release, I’d love Build’s gameplay to prove my initial misgivings unfounded.
I adore Dead Cells, which is pretty much the only Switch game that isn’t made by Nintendo that I’d give a 10/10 to. I love it so much, in fact, I also have it on PS4 and Xbox as well as Switch. Needless to say I’m really looking forward to this Castlevania DLC, which may well take it up to an 11 for me!
There’s some great picks on this list. Particularly Vampire Survivors (which would suit Switch down to the ground), The Witness, the Monkey Island games and the utterly fabulous Papers, Please, which I still play pretty regularly on iPhone.
Most definitely Sports Story for me on Switch this weekend. Other than that, it’s more God of War Ragnarok on PS5, while over on Xbox, I’ll no doubt be trying – and failing – to tear myself away from the fabulous Vampire Survivors. Though it’s a game that absolutely belongs on handheld, so I’m really looking forward to that supposed Switch port next year.
Whatever you’re playing this weekend, have a wonderful Christmas!
Despite those controls Kid Icarus: Uprising was one of my top three 3DS games, and I’d love the chance to play it again on Switch with actual twin-stick controls. Make it happen, Nintendo!
My favourite Zelda dungeon is the Thieves Hideout in what is still my favourite Zelda game; A Link Between Worlds. Man, I wish they’d bring that game to Switch!
I think it's interesting that that they said they preferred playing P5R on the Switch OLED over Valve’s Steamdeck. Personally, that’s all the praise I needed to hear.
Funnily enough, I only just restarted Super Mario Odyssey a couple weeks back. I’d genuinely forgotten how good it is to play and how gorgeous it is to behold. I’d love to see what Nintendo can do with a direct sequel. Can the bar be raised even further?
Ps. Currently at Bowser’s Kingdom and I don’t want it to end.
Virtue’s Last Reward and its sequel, Zero Time Dilemma, really should be on Switch. They were great on both 3DS and Vita, but would be even better on the Nintendo hybrid.
This analysis does make me question Nintendo Life labelling NMS as one of the best third-party ports yet. Still, it’s incredible that Hello Games got the full game running on Switch at all.
[EDIT] I’m not saying this isn’t a good port. It clearly is. I’m simply saying, well, asking I guess, is it really one of the very best Switch ports we’ve seen yet? Simply that. No more, no less.
@Jayesbe Thank you my friend. Someone else from the comments already directed me to that video and I took a look. Safe to say that I was really impressed by what I saw. I didn’t notice any discernible dips in performance and the game looked really good in the YouTube video. Having now seen P5R run on Switch, I’ll be picking it up, that’s for sure! Thanks again.
Having recently finished Breath of the Wild for the first time since launch, I’m now replaying Super Mario Odyssey. I’d genuinely forgotten how amazing this game still is. And it looks every bit as good today as it did back in 2017. Currently at the spectacular, New Donk City!
@Bizzyb @Joker1234 Thanks guys! Yep, just finished watching the BoTalks footage and I’m impressed. Will definitely be picking this up from the eShop at release. Thanks again.
This looks absolutely nuts. Despite owning Bayonetta 2 on Switch, I’ve never played either of the first two games (backlog’s innit), but I’m loving what’s been shown of the new game so far. Looks like I’d better catch up. Well, once I’m done with my third playthrough of Mario Odyssey that is.
Can not wait for Persona 4 Golden on Switch. I was considering buying the PlayStation version for my PS5, but no, P4G is a handheld game, and it belongs on Switch. So that’s where I’ll be playing it come January. Only three months to wait.
Oh and here’s hoping the eShop price will match the £19.99 that P4G costs on Steam!
I started Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the very first time back in August and, somehow, I’m already 150 hours in! Why did it take me so long to finally try it? I just thought it wasn’t my kind of game. How wrong I was. More of that this weekend then.
Over on PS5, I’ll continue with my playthrough of something completely different; The Last of Us Part I.
Hades is very special indeed, but for me, Dead Cells is the roguelike gift that just keeps on giving. For me, just pipping Cuphead, Celeste and the aforementioned Hades, it’s my favourite indie on Switch yet. And boy, that’s saying something!
I already have the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal on my PS5, which I still haven’t started, but I’m mightily tempted to grab this Switch version and play it lying back in bed or on the sofa while my wife is watching something on TV.
[NOTE] This trailer has been on the eShop for roughly two weeks now.
Already have this downloaded and ready to play on release. I missed it on PS4, and was thinking about picking up a copy to play on my PS5, but I really like the idea of having the option to play in handheld mode and I’d already heard this was an outstanding port. Can’t wait to start it.
Incredible! I’ve been looking for another reason to get back in to SMM2. Looks like I’ve found it!
[EDIT] Thought I’d take a 'quick look' at this being streamed on GameXplain’s YouTube channel. Nearly two hours later, I had to force myself to stop watching. I’ve got to leave some of it as a surprise for when I play through this creation myself. The quality is exceptional from what I’ve seen.
Man, I do love a good shmup, particularly so if it sports cool pixel art. With the absence of ZeroRanger on Switch, I may well grab this and see how it is. Looks decent for sure.
After all the Switch Pro is coming and Zelda blowout in Direct rumours that turned out to be a load of rubbish, I’m done with putting any stock in any of this until Nintendo outright confirms it.
Always wanted to pick NieR Automata up on PlayStation, but just never got around to it for whatever reason. Will definitely be picking up the Switch version though. Unlike many gamers, I’m not particularly sensitive to 30 vs 60FPS, so Switch will do just fine for me. What with this, Bayonetta 3 and Persona 5 Royal, we’ve got an incredible October ahead of us. Can’t wait.

Shame to see Octopath Traveler II drop out of the top ten. Such an incredible game!

Who on earth has given Octopath Traveler a 1 for Abysmal? Clearly someone who hasn’t played it, that’s who!

It’s a real shame that the home screen icon for Metroid Prime Remastered is so plain and doesn’t reflect the box art whatsoever 😕
