We Pokémon fans have been frankly spoilt by remakes in the past. From Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen way back in 2004 to the recent Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, if there's one thing that we love, it's playing the same game again only slightly different looking.
One fan has taken this mission statement and ran with it. Published on their YouTube channel, Pokebro has spent the past two weeks attempting to remake Pokémon Yellow in 3D and the results are seriously impressive.
The full video (found above) shows that this was no simple task. Much like CodyCantEatThis' project from last year - where he redesigned Pokémon Red and Blue - Pokebro's video sees the designer remake popular locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City and Route 2 in, you guessed it, 3D.
The artist references the Link's Awakening remake as a key inspiration for their finished product, and we can definitely spy hints of the The Touryst in that crisp voxel art. On top of these eye-catching sprites, the rebuild also adds some new mechanics to the game. These include an early-stage take on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's 'Let's Go' system where Pikachu will leave you to perform wild encounter battles, and a Pokémon Legends: Arceus-esque Poké Ball throwing graphic.
Adding these features to the miniature toy feel of the project, Pokebro's build has got us kinda hoping for another remake (typical). The video is, unfortunately, just a video for the time being and doesn't technically work as a playable game. While it seems unlikely that the Pokémon Company would ever turn to this HD-retro style for their games in the future, there's no harm in keeping our fingers crossed.
What do you make of this remake style? Send your Pikachu down to the comments to let us know!

Am I just a moron who can’t understand art or? Does this not look, all that great? Maybe it’s just not my type of art style, but I gotta say, not a fan. It legit makes the diamond and pearl remakes look like masterpieces.
Gross. I hate it.
There was a fan-made video showcasing a hypothetical remake of the Gen I games in the style of Ken Sugimori's faded drawing style which was gorgeous though, and I certainly wouldn't mind a remake in that style (the Mystery Dungeon remake on Switch looks a little like it too). The Link's Awakening remake style could have worked too... had the above resembled anything even remotely like it.
This just looks like a low-budget Minecraft knock-off, but uglier. Butt uglier.
I know it took a lot of effort and this person is probably very talented.
But it doesn't look good at all.
I was going to mention the art style reminded me more of The Touryst but the video itself did it before me
I’ll stick with Let’s Go, thanks.
This looks absolutely nothing like the Link's Awakening remake but ok
I’d like to open by saying that I appreciate people working hard on something they’re passionate about. That’s really awesome and more power to them when they bring it from a thought in their head into reality.
And I’d like to close by quoting a movie. “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
This is pretty rough around the edges, there's a lot of effort involved but there's no cohesive art style.
Using conventional polygon deformation with voxel based models is not a good fit.
Now if only Nintendo/Gamefreak would do something similar! Well, in the proper Link’s Awakening remake style, at least.
That looks gross. But so does Link's Awakening remake...
runs away
Except it doesn't look at all like the cute Link's Awakening remake. I appreciate fans going out of their way to recreate stuff they like, but aesthetically speaking this won't appeal to many people
They never learn.
Nintendo will take this down.
I appreciate the guy taking the time to try and maybe his other ideas are better but this is awful both mechanically and visually.
An example of when you wish a C&D is given.
Yeah, no. I don't mean to be harsh, but this...doesn't look great.
Looks more 3D Dot Game Hero than Pokemon... but, the effort is really nice to see! I like how in the video he went over the problem solving that is required in game development. Neat video, even if the final product is not to my taste.
For those who don't remember 3D Dot Game Hero this is what it looked like: https://youtu.be/JlWsZXGJahg
Looks like a fun little project made by a small content creator. I think the creator did a really good job with the video, he definitely has a lot of potential. The final result lacks a lot of polish yeah, but there's still some fun ideas in there.
not worth a news article in my opinion.
I can see the ideas and the work he's putting in to this and the comments he make through it is funny.
But the hate he is getting here, come on could you do anything like this? Come on guys, stop being so negative.
This looks so cool. Day 1 for me ^_^
Comparing that to Link's Awakening HD is inaccurate. You're setting up viewers for disappointment.
Interesting ideas and mechanics by someone who certainly has some talent. Can't say I particularly like the voxel style of presentation, but that was an opinion I held before watching the video.
This doesn't look at all like Link's Awakening.
Plus "remakes" like this are everywhere on Youtube. There isn't anything special about this one to make it news worthy.
People seem to be missing the part where he did all this in just 2 weeks. For 2 weeks of work it’s very impressive
Link's Awakening style? Jim, did you see how the Link's Awakening looks like?
I found assets online and just use those.
This is the differences between something fan made and actual dev made. Any actual creative dev would make their own games with assets they created themselves, not some unoriginal ones already available online. This is why I was not fond of a lot of fan made games like AM2R, Sonic Mania, Streets of Rage remake, and TMNT Rescue-Palooza cause assets and contents in those were taken from somewhere else.
Now this doesn't mean I dislike fan made games only, actual dev games that re-use assets too much also apply as well such as games like Metal Slug, King of Fighters, Castlevania (the Metroidvania titles), and Mega Man are games I tend to had enough too after the first three or four games that looks and plays too much a like. Metal Slug doesn't evolve much until Metal Slug 6, KOF didn't had a new art direction until KOFXII, Castlevania 2D didn't evolve until Mirror of Fate, and Mega Man finally move away from the NES after the 6th game. The Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors are also guilty of doing this gen after gen and so was games like Call of Duty, Madden, and FIFA.
I agree that the art is not great- I would also argue that this person didn't actually program, they might have just used procedural programming using Unreal Engine's nodes, but I do appreciate that they had the motivation and put in the effort to work on this personal project and put it out there. That in itself is a valuable skill that sometimes more talented artists or programmers lack. Many people have great ideas but hardly anyone actually does something about it.
This is NOT Link's Awakening style.
This is really impressive considering it's just someone who decided to do it in their spare time. Not mad on the artstyle personally but I admire the enthusiasm on display here from this person.
Its an impressive thing that they've accomplished, but I wouldn't say its really Pokemon either. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any reason to actually use the pokeballs to catch pokemon? It looks like its all just Pikachu running around the overworld killing things, with Ash as an anchor to drag him around? Its the aesthetics of Pokemon, true, but the heart and soul just feel like they are...missing, in my opinion. I applaud this person for trying something new, but I certainly would not have said "mission completed!" because this isn't Pokemon Yellow remade. It feels like something else entirely, with a Pokemon coat of paint thrown on it.
Can we please stop calling these "remakes"? If they are not remaking the entire game, they are just fan projects, just for fun, just how you'd draw a Pikachu on your notebook.
@Wexter my thought as well. Waaaaay more 3D dot Game Hero than LA
@Serpenterror Actual devs have used online assets, though. There are entire sound and graphic libraries, some royalty-free, for such use.
@Snatcher Yeah, not trying to be mean, but... This ain't it, fam.
Well now I feel a bit bad for suggesting the dev to submit it via the contact form. Didn’t expect such a negative reaction. Sorry, dev person.
@The_Pixel_King ahem… Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are pretty much that.
@jojobar
At least this one is relevant to a Nintendo ip. Better than acting like a youtuber doing a face reveal is big news.
@Eel to be fair I don’t think it’s really the dev that deserves the criticism here. It’s NL for such a misleading, click-bait title. They promised Link’s Awakening style art so naturally people will be a bit miffed when presented with voxel art models. It looks nothing like Link’s Awakening and it doesn’t look like the dev was even aiming for that. No wonder they didn’t use a picture of the actual game in the thumbnail.
Bad form NL. You wanted the clicks so bad and the dev has suffered as a result. Please just adjust the article and title accordingly
> Link's Awakening-Style 3D
Uh, what? No.
@Wexter 3D Dot Game Hero was great… I remember downloading a character pack to make the protagonist an 8 bit Link and I considered it a new-retro 3D-8-bit Zelda experience no one played.
Awesome underrated Zelda game
There's so much clickbait in the article title lol.
@The_Pixel_King I find them very close
Don't even compare this to Link's Awakening. Link's Awakening had a fully polished 3D look. I remember Arlo getting after that and the Diamond/Pearl remakes for just remaking sprites and nothing else, but this is the literal definition of taking 8-bit sprites and remaking them without any real alterations. Honestly, it's not a terrible look, but it's not what the article describes at all.
Um…this looks a hot mess…and nothing…and I mean -lit-er-ally-…NOTHING like Link’s Awakening: 3D 😬
@Snatcher Well, considering the Diamond and Pearl remakes were amazing, yeah this looks terrible. Also considering this was done on two weeks with only a few of the elements in this very small section represented, it's impressive. The dedication that went into this would be tough for anyone to replicate identically, let alone better, and while it doesn't look appealing it also doesn't take away from the sheer effort this project took. Try to do it yourself, video the process, and show your work.

@RobynAlecksys I’m sure they worked hard on it, I think the fact they knew how to, and did it at all is great, but I still don’t think it looks good. I Don’t have to do it to be able to criticize it.
Also I agree that it’s so odd that his is even compared to link’s awakening, it looks nothing like it.
It's pretty good for doing everything on his own over two weeks. The jarring parts are the assets he used, but coming up with the battle system and pikachu going out to fight pokemon that are near by is pretty cool and would've been difficult to do. All in all I say he did a great job.
Amazing for 2 weeks' work.
Ha lots of commenters giving this guy hate. Its a cool effort but the title shouldn't have compared it to Link's Awakening. Because of the title you go into watching the video expecting it to have really slick and awesome graphics like Link's Awakening remake but it doesn't at all.
I think all the hate from the commenters here is just because the article set up the false expectation of this guy's little prototype pokémon game looking amazing when it in fact looks like a little prototype of a game, which is what it is.
I commend their efforts but this is still a sketch.
No, this is ugly
@Bunkerneath I would blame Nintendo Life for calling this "Link's Awakening Style"
Obviously people are going into this with high expectations just because of the inaccurate title
@mweee True! They did use the same focus effect to make it look like miniatures, though.
One of the main problems is that there’s no distinct style. The environments, characters and effects aren’t following the same rules yet. It could turn out better in the future but it wasn’t ready to have an article written about it 😅
I'm sorry to hear that your Link's Awakening cart was broken
Interesting, but there's no real point to playing it without any real battles. These auto-attack substitutes suck compared to the traditional turn based formula.
All that work in 2 weeks is impressive and well done for that. I know I couldn't do this. The problem is Link's Awakening 3d was plonked randomly in the title for views. Its unfair to compare this to Link's Awakening and criticise this remake because of a misleading title. I do think the graphics aren't very good but that doesn't take away from the fact that this guy obviously put in a lot of time and effort.
