Re: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Is Already On Sale (US)

SwitchVogel

@Poodlestargenerica I know everyone loves to rag on Nintendo for never discounting their games often or deeply, but I have to say that it does make people value their games more. The only few times in the last few years that I've actually bought a game for full price were all for Nintendo games, because I wanted to play them and knew that I'd be looking at a months or years long wait before I could even start seeing 30% off regularly.

@link12684 I honestly think this is beginning to affect their launch sales. Feels like the last few games of theirs I read about have had disappointing sales at launch, and that's likely due in no small part to people knowing this exact situation is going to happen. I personally am very interested in buying this game, but I'm going to wait because I'm also confident it's going to drop to $20 by summer.

Re: Mini Review: A Void Hope (Switch) - A Dark, Immersive, Creepy Little Game

@somnambulance Funny you say that, reviews like this were what brought me to the site all those years ago! I always try to keep my eyes out for great little projects like this; especially these days, so much amazing content just flies under the radar. As much as I'm a major Nintendo fan, it's games like this that really keep me so engaged in the gaming hobby--so many interesting ideas being explored out in the indie space!

Re: Review: Eastward: Octopia (Switch) - A Great Farm Sim Expansion That Edges Out The Base Game

SwitchVogel

@ChHa No combat. There's a bit of exploration, but it's 90% just chill farm stuff.

@Folkloner I completely agree, it feels a little weird that something this substantial is kept exclusive to the base game. Like, I get that it's a DLC, but given how different it is from the original and how it targets a mostly different demographic, I'd think this would reach a wider audience if they released it as its own thing. Especially given that farm sims are really in vogue right now. Though frankly, I'd say Octopia is still well worth the price even factoring in the cost of the base game.

Re: Scarlet & Violet Are Now The Third Best-Selling Pokémon Games Of All Time

SwitchVogel

@Thief I think that's exactly why it won't sell as many; the lockdown really brought it a big second wind! Beyond that, though, Nintendo's 'second pass' at a hardware concept usually doesn't sell as well as the first, and I feel reasonably confident that the successor supposedly coming this year will be basically a more powerful Switch in the same way the 3DS and Wii U iterated on their predecessors.

Re: Exclusive: "This Game Is Not Going Away" - My Time At Sandrock Devs Talk Making Good, And 'Switch 2' Hopes

SwitchVogel

@JohnnyMind I honestly really appreciated that this interview started off like that; I think it's important for us staff as writers to hear about how our work is being received. At least for me, I always try to mindful of the fact that I am likely critiquing a project that virtually ruled several people's lives for a few years. The fact that a team collectively worked on this for however many thousands of hours isn't lost on me. Of course, if I think a game sucks, then I'm still gonna say that I think it sucks, but I also think it's very important for reviewers that we take every game seriously and at least attempt to treat it with the same level of respect that its creators did.

I can definitely say that from this interview specifically, I got a very strong sense of how much this team genuinely cares about making an enjoyable life sim. I know earnestness doesn't always translate to a quality product in the end, but for whatever it's worth, I think the people behind this are the real deal. Very interested to see how this game develops over time, and I'm curious what their plans are for whatever the Switch 2 turns out to be.

Re: Feature: Bandle Tale - Exploring The "Least Developed Parts" Of The League Of Legends IP

SwitchVogel

@JackieCMarlow In defense of Riot Forge, I've played all games they've released so far and the only connections you can really draw between them and the MOBA are the characters and lore; skipping these games because you don't like League would be like refusing to play Super Smash Bros. because it features Link and you don't like Zelda games.

You do make a good point though that the League branding could be hurting them, I know I was initially pretty dismissive of these releases before I decided to give them a fair shot. It's just a shame, because the world of Runeterra is super cool and the developers have consistently shown how well they can capitalize on its potential by exploring projects that are totally disconnected from the MOBA.

Re: Review: Persona 5 Tactica - Thrillingly Varied Turn-Based Strategy With Joker And Co.

SwitchVogel

@thiob I don't think this really spoils anything from P5, but I'd recommend you play that first anyway just to have the context of these characters and world--it's lauded as one of the greatest JRPGs ever for a reason. I'd suggest you play Royal instead of the original version, too; Royal fixed most of the few flaws with the original and is overall a much better experience.

Re: Review: My Time At Sandrock - A Farm Sim Sequel That Plays It Too Safe

SwitchVogel

@Astral-Grain You make a good point here, but I’d encourage you to bear in mind that no publication or individual will be without bias. Every review is subjective, no matter how much someone tries to claim otherwise. So comparing one person’s review to another, even if they’re published by the same organization, is ultimately a fruitless exercise because so many factors go into each person arriving at the conclusion that they did. I personally would’ve been harsher on Pokemon for its issues because they stick out more to me, but I didn’t write our review for that one.

And regarding Harvestella, I think that game did bring unique ideas to the farm sim genre, so calling it overly derivative would misrepresent it. You’re free to disagree with that assessment—my opinion is no more valuable than yours—but I stand by my view of that game being a stronger recommendation than this one for someone looking for a new farm sim.

Re: Review: My Time At Sandrock - A Farm Sim Sequel That Plays It Too Safe

SwitchVogel

@Astral-Grain Thanks for sharing, I appreciate the perspective! I know it can be frustrating to read reviews that don’t align with your opinion and seem unfair—I honestly wish we could agree on this game’s quality, but I can’t in good conscience give this Switch version a very high recommendation to anyone right now. So, how many hours have you put into this game on Switch so far? What specific things have you experienced in it that makes you think it deserves a better score than it got?

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon X & Y - The Series' Greatest Paradoxes

SwitchVogel

@KidSparta We may never know. Basically, Game Freak uses a numbering system for all mainline games and remakes, and it was later discovered that there is a two game gap in the numbering between X and Y and Sun and Moon. I personally think they were planning sequels like Black 2 and White 2, just way too many loose ends they never closed.

Re: Soapbox: Catching Legendary Pokémon The Old-Fashioned Way Was So Much Better

SwitchVogel

I remember doing something similar when I was a kid when they distributed Arceus at Toys R Us for Pokemon Platinum. Not only was it an amazing experience on its own, but I was blown away when I learned a couple years later that, if I traded him to my copy of SoulSilver, I could trigger an event to get a low level version of one of the creation trio members! I sometimes miss those days.

Re: Nintendo Aims To Reduce Scalping Of "New Hardware"

SwitchVogel

@blindsquarel The way I see it, they could just do a simple queue. Go on Nintendo's site and order a console, maybe put some money down, and they give you an estimated ship date that could be months or years away. Then they simply go down the list as soon as supply is available.

Re: Review: Sonic Origins Plus - Not Bad, But Sonic Still Deserves Better

SwitchVogel

@samuelvictor If you notice, we link to the original review towards the start of the text, for those who want my opinion on the base game; we trust readers to understand the difference. This review is squarely focused on the Plus update contents, which is firmly a 6/10, though I'd say the overall package is still an 8/10. Personally, I only really care for the original 4 games, and those are all in a pretty good state here.

Re: Review: Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine - A Bit Of A Grind

SwitchVogel

@Serpenterror As I understand it, the issue is that the original Team Meat doesn't exist anymore because they split up. If you're looking for a follow up to Super Meat Boy, I'd recommend The End is Nigh--that was the next platformer Edmund McMillan made and it feels to me like what Super Meat Boy 2 would've been if Team Meat never broke up.
