@arabiansanchez This is my thought, too. A big pool of testers would probably make it harder to prevent or track a leak if one happened--they're cleaning house so they can limit who sees what Switch 2 games and when.
@Poodlestargenerica I know everyone loves to rag on Nintendo for never discounting their games often or deeply, but I have to say that it does make people value their games more. The only few times in the last few years that I've actually bought a game for full price were all for Nintendo games, because I wanted to play them and knew that I'd be looking at a months or years long wait before I could even start seeing 30% off regularly.
@link12684 I honestly think this is beginning to affect their launch sales. Feels like the last few games of theirs I read about have had disappointing sales at launch, and that's likely due in no small part to people knowing this exact situation is going to happen. I personally am very interested in buying this game, but I'm going to wait because I'm also confident it's going to drop to $20 by summer.
If this is accurate, I'm guessing that they're developing it for the Switch's successor. I don't see this running terribly well on the Switch, and a game like this really needs great performance.
@somnambulance Funny you say that, reviews like this were what brought me to the site all those years ago! I always try to keep my eyes out for great little projects like this; especially these days, so much amazing content just flies under the radar. As much as I'm a major Nintendo fan, it's games like this that really keep me so engaged in the gaming hobby--so many interesting ideas being explored out in the indie space!
Did they ever fix Pinball FX's performance issues? I remember that being a step down from Pinball FX 3 when it launched, but they said that they'd work on it more to bring it up to snuff.
@Axecon Calm before the storm. A Direct of some kind is expected soon, but even that is only the prelude to the announcement they're gearing up for where they show off the new hardware they have coming.
@ChHa No combat. There's a bit of exploration, but it's 90% just chill farm stuff.
@Folkloner I completely agree, it feels a little weird that something this substantial is kept exclusive to the base game. Like, I get that it's a DLC, but given how different it is from the original and how it targets a mostly different demographic, I'd think this would reach a wider audience if they released it as its own thing. Especially given that farm sims are really in vogue right now. Though frankly, I'd say Octopia is still well worth the price even factoring in the cost of the base game.
@Solomon_Rambling I think it being tied to Eastward is part of why they were able to price it so cheaply. If they ever do release it as a standalone game, I'd guess the price would go up a bit, too.
@Thief I think that's exactly why it won't sell as many; the lockdown really brought it a big second wind! Beyond that, though, Nintendo's 'second pass' at a hardware concept usually doesn't sell as well as the first, and I feel reasonably confident that the successor supposedly coming this year will be basically a more powerful Switch in the same way the 3DS and Wii U iterated on their predecessors.
@StephenYap3 As I mentioned in the review, there is a fan patch that's made a lot of progress! I think they translated about the first half of it already. But you'll need a hacked Switch to apply the patch.
@JohnnyMind I honestly really appreciated that this interview started off like that; I think it's important for us staff as writers to hear about how our work is being received. At least for me, I always try to mindful of the fact that I am likely critiquing a project that virtually ruled several people's lives for a few years. The fact that a team collectively worked on this for however many thousands of hours isn't lost on me. Of course, if I think a game sucks, then I'm still gonna say that I think it sucks, but I also think it's very important for reviewers that we take every game seriously and at least attempt to treat it with the same level of respect that its creators did.
I can definitely say that from this interview specifically, I got a very strong sense of how much this team genuinely cares about making an enjoyable life sim. I know earnestness doesn't always translate to a quality product in the end, but for whatever it's worth, I think the people behind this are the real deal. Very interested to see how this game develops over time, and I'm curious what their plans are for whatever the Switch 2 turns out to be.
@JackieCMarlow In defense of Riot Forge, I've played all games they've released so far and the only connections you can really draw between them and the MOBA are the characters and lore; skipping these games because you don't like League would be like refusing to play Super Smash Bros. because it features Link and you don't like Zelda games.
You do make a good point though that the League branding could be hurting them, I know I was initially pretty dismissive of these releases before I decided to give them a fair shot. It's just a shame, because the world of Runeterra is super cool and the developers have consistently shown how well they can capitalize on its potential by exploring projects that are totally disconnected from the MOBA.
@thiob I don't think this really spoils anything from P5, but I'd recommend you play that first anyway just to have the context of these characters and world--it's lauded as one of the greatest JRPGs ever for a reason. I'd suggest you play Royal instead of the original version, too; Royal fixed most of the few flaws with the original and is overall a much better experience.
@Astral-Grain You make a good point here, but I’d encourage you to bear in mind that no publication or individual will be without bias. Every review is subjective, no matter how much someone tries to claim otherwise. So comparing one person’s review to another, even if they’re published by the same organization, is ultimately a fruitless exercise because so many factors go into each person arriving at the conclusion that they did. I personally would’ve been harsher on Pokemon for its issues because they stick out more to me, but I didn’t write our review for that one.
And regarding Harvestella, I think that game did bring unique ideas to the farm sim genre, so calling it overly derivative would misrepresent it. You’re free to disagree with that assessment—my opinion is no more valuable than yours—but I stand by my view of that game being a stronger recommendation than this one for someone looking for a new farm sim.
@Astral-Grain Thanks for sharing, I appreciate the perspective! I know it can be frustrating to read reviews that don’t align with your opinion and seem unfair—I honestly wish we could agree on this game’s quality, but I can’t in good conscience give this Switch version a very high recommendation to anyone right now. So, how many hours have you put into this game on Switch so far? What specific things have you experienced in it that makes you think it deserves a better score than it got?
@TCKuma I'm in the same boat. League is awful, but the world of Runeterra is legitimately interesting to me. I'm really glad Riot Forge keeps churning out interesting projects like this, I think games like this do a great job of showcasing how unique and cool Runeterra is!
@KidSparta We may never know. Basically, Game Freak uses a numbering system for all mainline games and remakes, and it was later discovered that there is a two game gap in the numbering between X and Y and Sun and Moon. I personally think they were planning sequels like Black 2 and White 2, just way too many loose ends they never closed.
@Solomon_Rambling I didn't play the first one, so I can't speak to that, but it didn't feel to me like anything was unreasonably beyond reach. If you want to unlock everything for every character it'll probably take a decent amount of time, but I wouldn't say it feels overly grindy.
@lechugajr @FishyS I can respect y'all being morbidly curious, but Balan is legitimately one of the worst games I've ever played from a major publisher 😂 By all means, get it to see what all the fuss was about, but please don't go into it expecting anything remotely competent. It cratered Yuji Naka's career for a reason!
@Alexface Tap the screenshots tab at the top of the screen if you want to see more! Every time someone opens the page, the review randomly pulls a few screenshots from that pool.
@Nikki_boagreis Sanctuary is a little statue in the hub that's like the Pokemon PC, it's where you swap monsters in and out of your party. You'll see monsters grazing around it, it's placed right by where you spawn in. Leave any cursed monsters in there then leave on a mission and they'll be fully healed when you get back.
I remember doing something similar when I was a kid when they distributed Arceus at Toys R Us for Pokemon Platinum. Not only was it an amazing experience on its own, but I was blown away when I learned a couple years later that, if I traded him to my copy of SoulSilver, I could trigger an event to get a low level version of one of the creation trio members! I sometimes miss those days.
@iNintendo It isn't chesslike at all, I'd say it's only as difficult to learn as a puzzler like Lumines or Tetris; the tutorial explains the mechanics well.
@blindsquarel The way I see it, they could just do a simple queue. Go on Nintendo's site and order a console, maybe put some money down, and they give you an estimated ship date that could be months or years away. Then they simply go down the list as soon as supply is available.
@samuelvictor If you notice, we link to the original review towards the start of the text, for those who want my opinion on the base game; we trust readers to understand the difference. This review is squarely focused on the Plus update contents, which is firmly a 6/10, though I'd say the overall package is still an 8/10. Personally, I only really care for the original 4 games, and those are all in a pretty good state here.
@Serpenterror As I understand it, the issue is that the original Team Meat doesn't exist anymore because they split up. If you're looking for a follow up to Super Meat Boy, I'd recommend The End is Nigh--that was the next platformer Edmund McMillan made and it feels to me like what Super Meat Boy 2 would've been if Team Meat never broke up.
@YZN3RF I actually noticed this, but I toyed around with it a little to test its effects and it seems to me like it's glitched. In my experience, it didn't appear to work, though I'd agree with you that the Pro Controller feels a little better.
