@Milton_Burle There are a few options for text, I just went with the retro look because the default font sticks out a bit. I think the default is fine for visibility, even on portable.
To all who asked, there are full touch screen controls in handheld. Personally I preferred docked because it doesn't smudge the screen, but the drag and drop functionality is there if you want it.
@The_Pixel_King Haha, I noticed the white line, too! First thing I see now when I look at the tile.
@CharlieGirl Hard agree with you here. I review games not just considering money as a factor, but time. I think it's important to temper expectations for older games, but just because it's a product of its time doesn't mean you're best served spending your limited hours on an old game instead of a much better designed newer one.
I'd be fine with them just localizing Brilliant Lights, that looks like a surprisingly solid mobile game that avoids a lot of pitfalls common to that platform.
@Einherjar I used to have this stance, but I'd really encourage you to give it a shot. The MOBA will always be a cesspool, but the world and lore itself is really interesting and shouldn't be judged according to that playerbase.
@MajorasLapdog I think it's a good enough story that it's enjoyable standalone, but there is a lot you'd be missing out on without broader knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Remember, this one is set thousands of years before most of the rest of the canon Star Wars content, so it's distinct in that way, but being set in the same world means there's still a lot of carryover.
@Zeldafan79 Not always. Like, I remember getting 100% in Kingdom Hearts as a kid and that game was my favorite for years, but I can barely make it ten hours in now without bouncing off due to how stiff and antiquated it feels. On the other hand, another favorite of mine as a kid was Yoshi's Island, and that game still holds up incredibly well both with gameplay and graphics.
This has to be one of the dumbest business decisions I've seen from a game company in a while. Not only are they kneecapping sales by never doing a digital launch and only producing physical copies during a certain window, but they're also promising to never update or improve upon these games post-launch. Reviews have already indicated Heaven's Machine is a mess, but no, they can't fix it with patches because that would offend physical cartridge purists or something.
I think companies like Super Rare offer a valuable service through their focus on physical media, but initiatives like this are just baffling to me.
@Nanaki Same for me. I have a chronic issue with never finishing most modern RPGs because most of them are too damn long. Anything over the 50 hour mark for me is where I really start losing interest.
@Lilmonix3 There are a couple easier modes, I think one of them is even basically a 'story' difficulty that just lets you breeze through. Plus, there are lots of QoL changes here to make the difficulty much more palatable and fair.
I think you'd be fine playing on the lower difficulties, it seems evident to me that Atlus really wanted this one to appeal to more than the few hardcore fans of this series. If you do go for it, however, I'd encourage you to challenge yourself and try for a difficulty level that's just at the edge of your comfort zone. These games are great for how nail-bitingly intense some of the combat encounters can get, and while I'm sure it's still enjoyable if you take the easy way, I think you'd be missing out on a key part of the experience. It'd be like playing Resident Evil with the infinite ammo rocket launcher; it's fun, but that's not how it's intended.
@Gohanjin That's a good question. I don't remember this ever getting a patch, so I'd be inclined to say this was the base version. I know there will be at least one patch around launch for the easiest game mode and to open up DLC.
@Warioware Man, I'm right there with you! Atlus put out something like 15-20 games on 3DS. Tons of SMT and Etrian Odyssey content, plus unique stuff like Stella Glow and Radiant Historia. I'd be willing to bet the only publisher that made more games than them was Nintendo itself.
My only guess is that all those 3DS games were very cheap to make and offered a very consistent return on investment for Atlus. HD games require more resources and effort, and the sales probably are mostly the same or only slightly better than before, so the margins are probably much thinner.
I feel like the two almost can't be compared. Switch may be a home console, but it's a handheld, too, and people tend to buy more than one of those. At any rate, these are still seriously impressive numbers; now I'm curious if it'll catch the DS someday.
What I don't get is why they didn't convert this to a paid release now with all the content included. Square has done that with a few RPGs they've discontinued on mobile, and it seems like a good way of still getting some revenue from a game while allowing fans to continue enjoying it. Think about how much time and money they sunk into developing this game over the past two years, and rather than getting a little extra out of that effort, they decided it's better to just burn it all down. Baffling, if you ask me.
Nice to not have shareholders or really anything above you to force you to put out a subpar product just to hit an arbitrary deadline. Imagine how much greater the game industry would be if more companies followed that example.
To all of y'all worried that this is Pikmin 4, here's a separate statement Nintendo made shortly after that Miyamoto comment: "We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present."
They specifically said "Pikmin 4" there, and this is when they were either planning or already developing Hey! Pikmin. The exact same statement was given two years later after the release of Hey! Pikmin. That doesn't necessarily mean Bloom isn't the game he was referring to, but I'd only believe this was the game when they officially and directly refer to this app as Pikmin 4.
Good lord, it's like Blizzard is trying to keep looking bad. At this rate, I'm half expecting OW2 to get its console ports cancelled so it can launch as a mobile game.
Lol what a mess. The worst part is knowing that Nintendo knew these problems would show up and they put it live anyway, despite the already heavy criticism over the pricing. It's like they want to push people away from the service.
I like to think this is just so they can get fodder for Sakurai to beat up in Smash when he's balancing characters. You just sit down with the man for twelve hours a day, six days a week and try not to get three-stocked every time. If you manage to actually beat him, you legally own Nintendo.
I'm just going to approach this by checking in once a year when my base membership is almost up so I can play the games for a month for only a couple more bucks under the pro-rated rules.
I wonder if Nintendo will actually backpedal after all this backlash, though. I could easily see it being a PR tactic where they'll 'lower' the price in a couple weeks to what they originally planned internally and everyone will praise them for their pro-consumer move.
Storage is such a weak excuse for this. I know some people would get up in arms over it, but if cartridge space is such an issue, just put 1.5 on the cart and make people download 2.5. It'd still be better than this cloud nonsense.
Also, it doesn't make sense if his point would be that it wouldn't fit in the base onboard storage. You can buy a 128GB SD card for about twenty bucks these days, and if that additional cost is too much of a financial stretch, I would seriously question whether you should be buying a Switch or any games for it.
@StephenYap3 I always advocate for considering not just money as a finite resource, but time, so I definitely feel your first point there. The way I see it, the industry has progressed to a point that at any given time, there will always be more good content out there than you'll ever have time to play. If you're already saying "maybe" about this one, I'd say you might as well just focus your attention to other games that really grab you.
@Zyph There is dual audio, I played Japanese voices with English subtitles. The devs actually recommended that, so I'd say it's the intended experience. English dub isn't bad, but it's nothing special.
I would've actually gotten all of these if they were native ports, even though I already own them all on PS4, just so I could have the novelty of them on the go.
In my mind, these cloud versions are a complete nonstarter. It's like paying for Stadia, only it's one game at a time and there's sometimes a line before you can even play your single player game. Sure, cloud gaming appeals to a certain market, but I bought a Switch to own games, not stream them.
