Re: Review: STAR WARS: Knights Of The Old Republic - Still Strong With The Force Despite Dated Design

@MajorasLapdog I think it's a good enough story that it's enjoyable standalone, but there is a lot you'd be missing out on without broader knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Remember, this one is set thousands of years before most of the rest of the canon Star Wars content, so it's distinct in that way, but being set in the same world means there's still a lot of carryover.

@Zeldafan79 Not always. Like, I remember getting 100% in Kingdom Hearts as a kid and that game was my favorite for years, but I can barely make it ten hours in now without bouncing off due to how stiff and antiquated it feels. On the other hand, another favorite of mine as a kid was Yoshi's Island, and that game still holds up incredibly well both with gameplay and graphics.

Re: Super Rare Reveals Its First Ever Physical-Only Switch Game, Heaven's Machine

SwitchVogel

This has to be one of the dumbest business decisions I've seen from a game company in a while. Not only are they kneecapping sales by never doing a digital launch and only producing physical copies during a certain window, but they're also promising to never update or improve upon these games post-launch. Reviews have already indicated Heaven's Machine is a mess, but no, they can't fix it with patches because that would offend physical cartridge purists or something.

I think companies like Super Rare offer a valuable service through their focus on physical media, but initiatives like this are just baffling to me.

Re: Review: Shin Megami Tensei V - The Best Entry Yet In This Dark, Engrossing RPG Series

@Lilmonix3 There are a couple easier modes, I think one of them is even basically a 'story' difficulty that just lets you breeze through. Plus, there are lots of QoL changes here to make the difficulty much more palatable and fair.

I think you'd be fine playing on the lower difficulties, it seems evident to me that Atlus really wanted this one to appeal to more than the few hardcore fans of this series. If you do go for it, however, I'd encourage you to challenge yourself and try for a difficulty level that's just at the edge of your comfort zone. These games are great for how nail-bitingly intense some of the combat encounters can get, and while I'm sure it's still enjoyable if you take the easy way, I think you'd be missing out on a key part of the experience. It'd be like playing Resident Evil with the infinite ammo rocket launcher; it's fun, but that's not how it's intended.

@Warioware Man, I'm right there with you! Atlus put out something like 15-20 games on 3DS. Tons of SMT and Etrian Odyssey content, plus unique stuff like Stella Glow and Radiant Historia. I'd be willing to bet the only publisher that made more games than them was Nintendo itself.

My only guess is that all those 3DS games were very cheap to make and offered a very consistent return on investment for Atlus. HD games require more resources and effort, and the sales probably are mostly the same or only slightly better than before, so the margins are probably much thinner.

Re: Nintendo Has Now Shut Down Its Dr. Mario World Mobile Game

SwitchVogel

What I don't get is why they didn't convert this to a paid release now with all the content included. Square has done that with a few RPGs they've discontinued on mobile, and it seems like a good way of still getting some revenue from a game while allowing fans to continue enjoying it. Think about how much time and money they sunk into developing this game over the past two years, and rather than getting a little extra out of that effort, they decided it's better to just burn it all down. Baffling, if you ask me.

Re: First Look: 'Pikmin Bloom', Niantic's Walktastic Follow Up To Pokémon GO, Soft-Launches Today

SwitchVogel

To all of y'all worried that this is Pikmin 4, here's a separate statement Nintendo made shortly after that Miyamoto comment: "We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present."

They specifically said "Pikmin 4" there, and this is when they were either planning or already developing Hey! Pikmin. The exact same statement was given two years later after the release of Hey! Pikmin. That doesn't necessarily mean Bloom isn't the game he was referring to, but I'd only believe this was the game when they officially and directly refer to this app as Pikmin 4.

Re: Random: Uh-Oh, Nintendo's Switch Online 'Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' Is Generating A Lot Of Dislikes

SwitchVogel

I'm just going to approach this by checking in once a year when my base membership is almost up so I can play the games for a month for only a couple more bucks under the pro-rated rules.

I wonder if Nintendo will actually backpedal after all this backlash, though. I could easily see it being a PR tactic where they'll 'lower' the price in a couple weeks to what they originally planned internally and everyone will praise them for their pro-consumer move.

Re: Wish Kingdom Hearts Was Native On Switch? A True Port Is Still "Undecided"

SwitchVogel

Storage is such a weak excuse for this. I know some people would get up in arms over it, but if cartridge space is such an issue, just put 1.5 on the cart and make people download 2.5. It'd still be better than this cloud nonsense.

Also, it doesn't make sense if his point would be that it wouldn't fit in the base onboard storage. You can buy a 128GB SD card for about twenty bucks these days, and if that additional cost is too much of a financial stretch, I would seriously question whether you should be buying a Switch or any games for it.

Re: Review: Astria Ascending - A Solid JRPG Salvaged With The Help Of Final Fantasy Veterans

SwitchVogel

@StephenYap3 I always advocate for considering not just money as a finite resource, but time, so I definitely feel your first point there. The way I see it, the industry has progressed to a point that at any given time, there will always be more good content out there than you'll ever have time to play. If you're already saying "maybe" about this one, I'd say you might as well just focus your attention to other games that really grab you.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting The "Cloud Versions" Of Kingdom Hearts On Switch?

SwitchVogel

I would've actually gotten all of these if they were native ports, even though I already own them all on PS4, just so I could have the novelty of them on the go.

In my mind, these cloud versions are a complete nonstarter. It's like paying for Stadia, only it's one game at a time and there's sometimes a line before you can even play your single player game. Sure, cloud gaming appeals to a certain market, but I bought a Switch to own games, not stream them.
