Re: Soapbox: Free Game Updates Are Fantastic For Everyone, Except New Players

@Snatcher Yeah, tbf I haven't seen another company go that far with it. Sure, games like Fortnite switch things up all the time, but the game design is inherently more shallow there and part of the draw is that it's a revolving door of game modes and content drops.

There's simply no excuse for what Bungie is doing tho. It'd be like if Nintendo released Splatoon 3 as a full price expansion for Splatoon 2, deleted all the existing maps and most of the guns, and gave all the original Splatoon 2 players a map or two to play on. If I knew Bungie was gonna do this with D2 back when it came out, I never would've paid for it.

@Yosher They said they did it to reduce file size and improve performance, because it was too hard to maintain the old content or something. I can see their point, but a new player today now gets tossed into the middle of a story that's already several chapters in, and they don't really prime you on what's already happened (that you also can now never play). Personally, it completely killed my interest in returning for Witch Queen when I realized that all the work I did before amounted to nothing and that I couldn't even play the missions or planets I used to enjoy. Somehow, they took out virtually everything that I once paid $60 for and now I have to pay even more money for content that they've already promised they're going to eventually take away, too. It's baffling.

To add insult to injury with the Destiny 2 example, the new literally replaces the old. I am actually incapable of playing the same Destiny 2 I played a couple years ago because Bungie straight up deleted almost all the content I used to play. Never seen a dev do something like that before and it's completely turned me off the game. Who wants to play a game that will effectively erase itself--and all the progress you made in it--after just a few years?

@CANOEberry I doubt it'll ever get updates, but I felt like it was a complete experience. Honestly, it was the prose that really drew me in, each scene is described in such rich and varied detail.

For something like this, I think it's important to just go into it with an open mind and take it for what it is. From a raw hours to dollars ratio, you'll get way more value out of just about any RPG on the system, but this one is so unique and well-written that it'll stick with me for much longer than most stuff I play.

Re: Fans Have Created Their Own Metroid 64, And It Looks Incredible

@Ogbert They do weird stuff like this every now and then, though. Did anyone really ask or expect them to localize the original Fire Emblem, but only for a few months? Did we think they'd do a toy-like version of Link's Awakening? I think a Metroid 64 would be just weird enough that it could have some bigger appeal.

Re: Physical-Only Switch Title 'Demon Throttle' Opens A Second Chance Preorder

I'm curious how this is going to pan out. The game looks fine, but unless it has a ridiculous amount of content, it doesn't look like it justifies thirty bucks. I doubt this'll sell much, but then I think there's no way it would release digitally at that price and maybe they'll end up making way more just because people want the 'prestige' of owning it.

I'm hoping this leads to a new wave of SMT games! For a few years there, it felt like we were just being showered with them on 3DS and then they stopped as soon as that platform fell out of fashion. Soul Hackers 2 gives me hope that they finally have a solid HD workflow in place and can start putting out more spin offs and side games to try interesting ideas.

@somebread I definitely see that element and this is where I find it difficult to have a firm opinion. On one hand, I don't want to invalidate or dismiss his real feelings toward a culture that was indirectly responsible for trauma earlier in his life. On the other hand, is this the right way to criticize that culture? Making something that's so pointedly offensive to its participants may feel good, but does it lead to anything productive happening in the ongoing conversation?

Re: The Binding Of Isaac: Repentance Receives Huge Update, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

@Not_Soos It kinda bothers me, too. I don't think it's right to represent any culture or belief system by caricature that encourages stereotypes and is arguably malicious in its messaging. Luckily, this game sticks out so much because it is largely the exception to the rule; it seems to me that most developers choose to make their art about the things they love, rather than those that they don't. At any rate, it's definitely worth playing if you can get past the culture issues, the gameplay here is among some of the best of the genre.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

SwitchVogel

Honestly, I say just stick to the best stuff. Life's too short to waste on games that are outdated and age poorly. Like, I've been working through the SMT series over the past couple years, but as far as I'm concerned, the first two games don't exist. I can appreciate what they did for establishing the series, but it's now gone so far beyond those that it's not worth the time to go back to such simplistic and antiquated games.

Re: Former Nintendo Employee Admits He's Frustrated With Switch Online, Calls For More Transparency

SwitchVogel

@NinChocolate That's the point, though, it never has extended to their online; Nintendo has been in last place with their online services as long as online has been a mainstay of gaming platforms. That poor reputation didn't mean a thing when it came time for them to start charging for their online, and it won't mean a thing when their service is just as wonky when next gen rolls around. They'll still be selling subs by the millions, regardless of what enthusiast communities like this have to say.
