I'd believe it; 3D platformers have come back more these past few years and it's been so long since even Nuts and Bolts came out. Even if they just did a Crash or Spyro style remaster of the originals, they'd probably do pretty well here.
@Ravio18 Another one of my favorites is The Messenger. That one downplays the Metroidvania elements too, but I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that game.
@Snatcher Yeah, tbf I haven't seen another company go that far with it. Sure, games like Fortnite switch things up all the time, but the game design is inherently more shallow there and part of the draw is that it's a revolving door of game modes and content drops.
There's simply no excuse for what Bungie is doing tho. It'd be like if Nintendo released Splatoon 3 as a full price expansion for Splatoon 2, deleted all the existing maps and most of the guns, and gave all the original Splatoon 2 players a map or two to play on. If I knew Bungie was gonna do this with D2 back when it came out, I never would've paid for it.
@Yosher They said they did it to reduce file size and improve performance, because it was too hard to maintain the old content or something. I can see their point, but a new player today now gets tossed into the middle of a story that's already several chapters in, and they don't really prime you on what's already happened (that you also can now never play). Personally, it completely killed my interest in returning for Witch Queen when I realized that all the work I did before amounted to nothing and that I couldn't even play the missions or planets I used to enjoy. Somehow, they took out virtually everything that I once paid $60 for and now I have to pay even more money for content that they've already promised they're going to eventually take away, too. It's baffling.
To add insult to injury with the Destiny 2 example, the new literally replaces the old. I am actually incapable of playing the same Destiny 2 I played a couple years ago because Bungie straight up deleted almost all the content I used to play. Never seen a dev do something like that before and it's completely turned me off the game. Who wants to play a game that will effectively erase itself--and all the progress you made in it--after just a few years?
@CharlieGirl That was my thought here. It definitely has some flaws, but I really appreciated how this one tries to be something distinctive. I think it would've been a better game overall if it was 'just' a twin stick shooter, but then there would be no reason to pay much attention to it.
I feel like this is reaching the point where this game is so hyped that it'll never meet everyone's sky high expectations. It's going to be an absolutely excellent game no doubt, but I already can almost hear the complaints about everything that it isn't.
@SteamEngenius There is an option in the menu to increase the text size. I don't have a Lite so I don't know what it would look like, but it could negate the issue.
@CANOEberry I doubt it'll ever get updates, but I felt like it was a complete experience. Honestly, it was the prose that really drew me in, each scene is described in such rich and varied detail.
For something like this, I think it's important to just go into it with an open mind and take it for what it is. From a raw hours to dollars ratio, you'll get way more value out of just about any RPG on the system, but this one is so unique and well-written that it'll stick with me for much longer than most stuff I play.
Honestly, I remember enjoying this one, but I played it before most other Metroid games. I can see why it didn't do great, but I'd like to see another game in the series in this style someday. After Prime 4, I think they should try a 3rd person 3D game again.
Honestly, not really surprised; from this, it doesn't sound like Earthbound Beginnings did all that great. For all the noise that gets made online about Mother 3, I think there's only a very small group of people that would actually care about it getting localized.
@Ogbert They do weird stuff like this every now and then, though. Did anyone really ask or expect them to localize the original Fire Emblem, but only for a few months? Did we think they'd do a toy-like version of Link's Awakening? I think a Metroid 64 would be just weird enough that it could have some bigger appeal.
How cool would it be if Nintendo actually did a project like this? Imagine if they did a "Metroid 64" developed for the Switch, but designed to adhere as closely as possible to what we imagine a Metroid 64 really would've been like.
@MindfulGamer Normally I'd agree with you, but there are literally no improvements or additions here. Which is fine, but then why would you pay four times as much just to play it on Nintendo's screen instead of your phone's? You can even cast from your phone to most TVs these days.
Fun fact: King of Swing got a sequel on the DS called Jungle Climber. Those games always felt like a weird departure from the platforming of DKC, but I really enjoyed them.
@Highlar At least for me, every game starts at a 9 and then points get taken off as issues crop up. If a game has no notable issues, it gets a 9. If it meets that bar and it brings some remarkably fresh and new ideas to the genre, it gets a 10.
I'm curious how this is going to pan out. The game looks fine, but unless it has a ridiculous amount of content, it doesn't look like it justifies thirty bucks. I doubt this'll sell much, but then I think there's no way it would release digitally at that price and maybe they'll end up making way more just because people want the 'prestige' of owning it.
@Tasuki Both of the 'main' versions do, but this one takes place at night, while the PS3/360 version has it during the day. It's later on where more differences emerge between the two in who gets fought and what planets Starkiller visits.
I'm hoping this leads to a new wave of SMT games! For a few years there, it felt like we were just being showered with them on 3DS and then they stopped as soon as that platform fell out of fashion. Soul Hackers 2 gives me hope that they finally have a solid HD workflow in place and can start putting out more spin offs and side games to try interesting ideas.
@somebread I definitely see that element and this is where I find it difficult to have a firm opinion. On one hand, I don't want to invalidate or dismiss his real feelings toward a culture that was indirectly responsible for trauma earlier in his life. On the other hand, is this the right way to criticize that culture? Making something that's so pointedly offensive to its participants may feel good, but does it lead to anything productive happening in the ongoing conversation?
@Not_Soos It kinda bothers me, too. I don't think it's right to represent any culture or belief system by caricature that encourages stereotypes and is arguably malicious in its messaging. Luckily, this game sticks out so much because it is largely the exception to the rule; it seems to me that most developers choose to make their art about the things they love, rather than those that they don't. At any rate, it's definitely worth playing if you can get past the culture issues, the gameplay here is among some of the best of the genre.
Absolutely love this developer's work, they really have a solid grasp of good platforming design! I hope this does well enough that they can justify more DLCs; I know Slime-San had a few and those were excellent.
@NintendoByNature No items to gain, but you unlock a new form every hour or so for the first ten hours and they all mix it up pretty well. Not every dungeon has a boss fight at the end, but all of them at least have a wave based arena fight at the end.
Honestly, I say just stick to the best stuff. Life's too short to waste on games that are outdated and age poorly. Like, I've been working through the SMT series over the past couple years, but as far as I'm concerned, the first two games don't exist. I can appreciate what they did for establishing the series, but it's now gone so far beyond those that it's not worth the time to go back to such simplistic and antiquated games.
@sleepinglion No, this is just to give all the developers they're hiring for Prime 4 a place to work. Once the building is done, then they can finally start making the game.
@CANOEberry It's definitely distinct from Atlus' other work, but I think it's a solid story all around. Great character development and it has just about every trope you could imagine in sci-fi, but it never feels cheap because of it. I'd contend this is one of the best storylines Atlus has done.
Amazing to me how much this game has expanded over the last few years. I could never make it past 2BC, but I always jump back into this one when there's a new update.
Super cool to see, but this is such a weird revival. Ubisoft isn't interested in turning Child of Light into a bigger IP, yet they're having Aurora crossover into another game? Part of me hopes the response to this will lead to CoL 2, but I don't want to get my hopes up.
@NinChocolate That's the point, though, it never has extended to their online; Nintendo has been in last place with their online services as long as online has been a mainstay of gaming platforms. That poor reputation didn't mean a thing when it came time for them to start charging for their online, and it won't mean a thing when their service is just as wonky when next gen rolls around. They'll still be selling subs by the millions, regardless of what enthusiast communities like this have to say.
