Re: Rumour: New Nintendo Direct Airing Later Today

@Jeronan 2 or 3 days? Indies still tend to cross the ocean with much larger waits last I knew, and games that don't come out everywhere are still a thing. Just issues I'd rather avoid.

On that topic, NLife has gotten worse and worse about specifying regions for news over the years. Wouldn't have bothered if they just said UK.

@MH4 Oh, was that not even a stream? I heard about it after it hit so I dunno.

As for timing...this has been slightly longer than the gap between a regular Direct and the Labo reveal. I don't think Nintendo is too worried about spacing out presentations on different topics.

Re: Motion Twin Apologises For Frame Rate Drops In Switch Version Of Dead Cells

@boop22 You have a weird textbook. I don't see the reason in propelling your demands so far beyond what is necessary for a fun game when we used to have no problem with far worse. I wouldn't advocate for a damn slideshow of a game, but I don't get how dips into the 40's are a real problem.

Granted, I haven't played Dead Cells yet (physcial copy preordered following rave reviews), so I can't speak from experience on this title. But thus far, this is the ONLY article complaining about it I've seen, and the community is split on the issue. Insisting this is a dealbreaker feels well overblown.

Re: Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé Hits Back At Analysts After Recent Share Price Drop

Don't wanna show too much too fast and build a Square-Enix sized waiting game culture. And I'm calling it now...at least one more as yet unannounced Wii U port will help fill out the year and E3 wasn't really the place to highlight that.

I really wish Reggie wouldn't speak in easily refuted absolutes like that. Obviously Nintendo does sometimes make announcements too soon...then people complain like now. They just can't win.

"Given that both Sony and Microsoft have no problem with teasing their fans with titles that are years away from release, it's about time Nintendo embraced the same approach, if only to give us something to look forward to."

No. Please, no. I am sick to DEATH of games getting announced way too damn early and I am more than happy to have Nintendo making efforts to avoid that. Prime 4 was itself just that last year, but Metroid in particular really needed the one-two support at the time. If anything, I just wish the next Yoshi game was due sooner. Hope it doesn't drag on as long as Woolly World did.

Presentation has never been a strength for Conceptis, but they do make good puzzles and are very much offering something Nintendo ISN'T with the color ones. This review comes off like it's knocking a game for not trying to be more than it is instead of judging it on its own merits. I mean...what innovation did you EXPECT a game like this to offer?

Re: Review: RPG Maker Fes (3DS)

Stuffgamer1

I poured a TON of time into various projects on the PS1 version of RPG Maker, but never actually finished one. My closest was an absurd adventure following four cosplayers to retrieve their GameCube (complete with custom art), creatively titled Game Quest. The maps were all done, the story was pretty much finished...I even learned the engine well enough to put together a pretty nice three-story water level mechanic in one dungeon.

So what killed it? For one thing, it was needlessly difficult to keep track of what your event flags did, requiring meticulous note-taking IRL (I don't know if more modern versions have fixed this at all). My notes were sufficient for a while, but useless after too long a hiatus from working on it.

The other HUGE problem which is even more likely to still be present here was gameplay balancing. I loved mapping and placing Events, but the character/enemy dynamics necessary to make the game decent were impossible to wrap my head around. Good luck making battle in an RPG Maker game riveting, but it should at least be reasonably functional and that was never my bag.

The custom asset options on PS1 were of course extremely limited, but apparently it had a rudimentary pixel editor that they didn't even bother with on 3DS? Oh well, it probably wouldn't matter too much. I mostly used stock assets on PS1, even writing it into the dialog (such as the standard robot being a terrible Clank costume).

Anyway, the RPG Maker series can be a ton of fun even if you never actually finish a game and I would easily recommend giving it a try in some form.
