I don’t understand the angry mobs against Nintendo and the Pokémon Company. I’m all for bringing our pitchforks and torches out, but too many people in this comment section decided to bring their law degrees instead. Where did you all get your degrees, and why didn’t I get the memo I needed one to read Nintendo Life articles?
The fact that 100% clean areas get mucked up again is devastating to me. I have the real world to remind me that chores are never done. I need my games to let me fantasize about cleaning the bathroom once and it being spotless forever.
That’s the one I remember playing as a kid. I liked it at the time, although Sonic 3D - of all games - was the one that held my interest then.
The only other Power Ranger game I played was on the PC sometime in the late 90s. I remember the first level being in the city and ended with you on the rooftops. The second level was in some factory or something and was extremely dark. I never was able to get past the first part of that level.
I appreciate the thoughtful response explaining the changes to the Nintendo Download articles. These articles were also the highlight of my week back in the VC Reviews days, but that was a time when getting three releases in a week was a big thing! I do think NL does a fantastic job highlighting unreviewed games in other articles, like Stonham’s top RPG Maker horror games on the Switch and yet to come.
I also appreciate the many reviews that come out each week, although I always want more. Maybe someone can answer this: has NL answered a letter explaining how they choose the games they review?
As others have said, I see Enter the Gungeon as a roguelike based on the definition I used. I also think the definition you used (roguelikes being turn-based like Rogue) is equally acceptable, hence my coin-flipping analogy. It seems people use the definition I explained more frequently these days, but the whole definition thing really should be cleared up.
Roguelite Roguelike Roguelove Roguelife Roguelime, now with that citrus taste for an extra roguebite
Darn Berlin always ruining everything. I have no desire to play the original Rogue, so to purists, my definitions of roguelike/lite will always be inaccurate.
I flip a coin each day to determine how I want to define the difference between roguelike/lite. How I’ve come to understand the difference is that roguelites allow for permanent upgrades outside of runs that make later runs easier to beat (Hades, Heroes of Hammerwatch, Elsie). Although you can unlock new content in roguelikes, each individual run doesn’t get easier because there is no progression outside of the runs. Your skill is the only thing that can make a run easier (Spelunky 2, Binding of Isaac, Slay the Spire).
I love my roguelikes/lites but never really enjoyed the gameplay of Mega Man X and its ilk. Elsie is likely not for me!
Love to see this interview, and I’ve been stoked for this game since I played the demo on PC. I rarely buy games day one, but I’ll gladly grab Slay the Princess on its release date.
As a purely casual Pokémon fan, I can tell this article is about Pokémon, but it almost reads like it’s in another language.
I select my Pokémon team based on which look the coolest. Are they losing in battle? Better shove a bunch of rare candy in them. Did I just make an entirely Ghost-based team that’s lousy against certain other teams? Better shove a bunch of rare candy in them.
It’s cool that the series has such depth when looking at the competitive scene, and I hope future games continue to make changes that improve the meta for the competitive audience. I just happen to enjoy playing in the shallows, looking at the cool new Pokémon.
Fantastic article! I like when Nintendo Life showcases games they haven’t reviewed, putting more games on my radar. I have three to add to my wishlist and three that I hope make the jump to the Switch.
I heard Nintendo pushes back the date of the Switch 2 reveal for every article speculating about when the Switch 2 will be revealed. We could’ve been playing the Switch 2 back in 2022.
I’d agree with the other reviewers that it’s more of an interactive experience. The puzzles aren’t difficult at all because there are relatively few possible moves to complete a puzzle. As such, even if you don’t see the solution immediately, you can brute force your way through every possible combination in a minute or two and get the solution.
I enjoyed it more for how the melodies grew as you complete the puzzles. It’s pleasant in terms of visuals and sound, but I’d definitely recommend other puzzle games before Rhytmos.
I was intrigued when I saw this on the eShop, so I’m glad Nintendo Life reviewed it and found it good! I love music-based puzzles like Rhytmos, so I’ll be adding this one to my wishlist.
I don’t think anybody (including @Vyacheslav333) is questioning if a company wants to make money. I’m also wondering why Live Wire aren’t going with a steeper discount. So many games are on sale for 60% off or more that 50% doesn’t wow me.
I’ve been interested in this game, but I’m not a shmup fan. Even at $10, the game is not cheap enough for me to make an impulse purchase. So the question is now whether the company could have sold more than double the number of copies at 75% off that they’re going to sell at 50% off
I didn’t know of the controversy. Thanks for the context! If I’m reading it right (the game contained a reference to a certain world leader), I’m disappointed that such small “joke” drew such a petty response.
I enjoyed Detention and probably would’ve checked out Devotion if it came to the Switch. It’s awesome Red Candle Games is getting some more recognition, but I may pass on Nine Sols. I’ve served enough time playing brutally tough games, and I’m fine settling into the easier side of gaming.
What’s the appeal of the game for you, even if it ends up on your backlog? The review was pretty disparaging to me, and I personally don’t go for games in the 4-6 range of quality. Just interested in your thought process.
I admittedly don’t have many! Little Goody Two Shoe, Ib, Signalis, Corpse Party, and World of Horror are on my wishlist. Although I think Amnesia is a good game, stealth horror creeps me out.
On Switch, I’ve enjoyed:
both Little Nightmares (I prefer the second)
Doki Doki Literature Club (which is more psychological horror)
Paranormasight
Return of the Obra Dinn (which has more horror elements than actual scares)
Oxenfree
Detention
the Exit 8 (minor horror but started a recent trend of knock-offs)
Iron Lung
Paratopic
I’m much better with movies and books! If you have any recommendations, I’ll take them!
This looks pretty slick. I love horror games, but I’m timid, so many modern horror games - particularly those with jump-scares or first-person perspectives - are tough for me to play. There has been a slew of non-traditional horror games on the Switch recently that have been perfect for me, and I hope this is another one!
We’ve been able to date dilfs, pigeons, monsters, literature club girls, and now household appliances. We’re one step closer to the ultimate dating simulator in which you flirt with quarks and strings. It’ll be called, “the Building Blocks of Love.”
Where’s my score, Nintendo Life? How can I dismiss a game entirely without knowing the score?
I wonder how much can be accomplished in a single day in the Garden Path. Even with all the things to do in Animal Crossing, I felt you could run out of meaningful content in a day, especially when you’re just starting out. The glacial pace of the Garden Path may help pad things out, but it all seems so dull to me. Hagues made it very clear this game is not for me, so I’m interested in if other readers are planning to grab this.
I don’t have enough information to be convinced yet. The screenshots have little action, so I’m wondering what will make the levels “dynamic.” Splatoon works well because you can take out opponents and have a slew of weapons to vary the gameplay. If you can only cover ground in Splatterbot, I can see the game getting old fast. Stamp Out from Mario Party has a similar premise, and it works for a minigame. Stretched into an entire multiplayer experience (even for a two-minute match), I’m not so sure.
I’m hopeful my wife plays this one. She typically steers away from difficult games but conquered Darkest Dungeon with aplomb (and several online guides). The gameplay is definitely not for me, but I enjoy seeing the mechanics and learning about the game from afar.
I’d like to think a stand-alone Ganon game will end the trilogy (after LA and EoW). Rather than an adventure game, it’ll be a life simulator a lá Animal Crossing. You make friends with monsters to guard your lair, personalize the traps in your dungeons, and take out a small loan to buy chests and unique items to inexplicably keep in said dungeons. True power is a healthy self-care routine and forward-thinking.
I’m all for reassessing how we credit people for the work they do. Game Developer’s article (and by extension, Nintendo Life’s) doesn’t seem to be the way to do it. The original article is largely just the quotes from the translators, and these translators are obviously going to present the issue from their perspective. What we don’t get is the context about contract work and developer/translator relationships (which several others in the comments have noted), leading to a skewed and rather inflammatory article.

What a cool concept, and what a bummer it doesn’t have more QoL improvements. As I get older, I find I’m becoming less tolerant of old-school game jank, whether it’s poor camera controls, illogical puzzles, steep difficulty spikes, or unclear game mechanics. I think I would enjoy a fully updated Princess Maker, but based on this review, the mechanics may be too outdated to make this entry a worthwhile purchase for me.
@cyrus_zuo reminded me of the zany fun of Driift Mania when Neo Sprint was first previewed, so I’ve been itching for something similar ever since. I may consider Neo Sprint at a steep discount, but it just isn't wacky enough to appeal to me now. Kirby Air Ride and Driift Mania are really the only top-down racers I’ve played, so it figures that I’m looking for something a little less traditional.
The survey made me realize I don’t care all that much about NSO + Expansion Pack but I’m such a Nintendo stooge I’ll buy just about anything they put out.
They did give me Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls, so that’s something.
I’ve had an almost identical game, “The Battle Cats,” on my phone. A fun, mindless game if you can ignore the incredibly predatory gacha mechanics. The Switch may be a handheld, but it doesn’t have the same portability of a phone that a game like Metal Slug Attack needs. That said, no one is missing out on anything by skipping a game like this.

I’m intrigued how the team will balance the difficulty for Tempopo. I’m not sold on the gameplay yet, but Witch Beam has two solid games under their belt, so I’m willing to keep an eye on this one.
Good to know. I’m a completionist as well when it comes to clearing floors, so perhaps I’ll have to go into Dicefolk with the same mindset as I did with Monster Train, knowing I may not complete a run in a single night. MT runs could be a beast.

The Metroidvania elements - at least just based on what I’ve read and seen - seem shoehorned into this new entry of Yars. Change for the sake of change and little else.
But that’s me judging something I haven’t played and of which I know little. I’ll keep an eye on this one to see if it can change my opinion of the developer!
