To me, Warframe has such an intricate customization/progression system hampered by simplistic and redundant gameplay. I also don’t prefer looter shooters. I might give this new game a shot because I prefer melee over shooting, but I would hope the hub world is more streamlined than Warframe.
I will always love the spectacle, even if it disappoints from time to time. I grew up looking forward to Nintendo at E3, back when I could learn about it only from Nintendo Power. These directs still give me that giddy excitement, so I’d be bummed if they ever retired them.
I’m glad to see this statement from Nintendo. I was not aware of Japan’s stance on same-sex marriages, and I hope we see change there and in other countries where this is an issue.
Little do we know the soundtrack is entirely comprised of New Age hits from the last fifty years, from Enya to Yanni. Being a massage game, no other music makes sense.
In psychology, a prototype is “the best or average exemplar of a category, used for concept formation.” What this means is we have a mental image of something that can be generalized to understand similar objects/things/ideas. When you think of a bug, your first image may be a spider, ant, butterfly, etc., and this is your prototype. You don’t think all bugs look like your prototype; however, you assume all bugs are similar to it. This process helps you categorize new things without having to reinvent a mental image.
I bring this up because I have no problem with comparisons to other games. Sure, a game needs to be judged on its own merit, but games don’t exist in a vacuum. By comparing a new game to Zelda, Mario, or Minecraft (often our genre prototypes), I have readily developed a core understanding of what this game is. With this understanding out of the way, the review or description can now focus on what makes the us game different. We think in prototypes, so I think the comparisons can be helpful.
This is not to say that journalists/reviewers/writers don’t overuse comparisons. I’d argue too many comparisons reflect negatively on the writer rather than on the concept of comparisons.
Personally, I also want to know how a game compares in quality to other games in the genre. I’m very particular with my Metroidvanias, so if a Metroidvania isn’t better than Iconoclasts, I’m not particularly interested.
Man, can you imagine how many more hours of content this adds to the base game? I could see myself playing this 24 hours a day if I had nothing else to do, like eating, sleeping, or breathing.
Sonic Mega Collection was the second game I owned on the Gamecube. My friend had a Genesis which formed my love for Sonic, so having all the games on one disk was amazing. I’m glad Gipp mentioned the awful unlock system. I spent hours trying to beat each game (stupid Mean Bean Machine) because I thought that’s how you unlocked the new stuff.
I like their comments on distraction and avoidance, noting how video games can be helpful and harmful. I hope the discussion on video games can progress to the point that more articles clarify when you should and should not evaluate how you play or how your children play. As Kate mentioned, video games provide a wonderful medium for self- exploration and expression. However, parents need to be more mindful of age ratings and online engagement, especially with the prevalence of shooter games. As with everything, balance and moderation with video games are key to a healthy and happy life!
Time and time again, I’ve tried to get into Lightning Bolt because of how much I love Thumper. It’s intense music, and it’s just beyond my threshold of what’s enjoyable. Can’t imagine what a live show is like.
Glad to see Thumper getting more recognition. The last level is absolutely bonkers.
Instructions were unclear. Chose to just be a goose. Stayed in the pond. Honked only once. Police were called almost immediately. This feather costume is really hard to run in.
I'm surprised Lydia wasn't mentioned, given how much Nintendo Life enjoyed it.
Soul Searching has some very interesting themes, even if its gameplay struggles.
All the other games mentioned are solid. I agree with @Mario_maniac that What Remains of Edith Finch is an exceptional game about grief, loss, and mental illness. It has so many layers to it that's it worth an extra playthrough. Gone Home and Firewatch also offer good stories but not quite to the level of Edith Finch.
O is by far my favorite character, largely because all of his dialogue speaks to me. Did you ever purchase the alternate voice track for him? It essentially makes him angry O who aggressively shouts every pi. It’s glorious, and I’ve never gone back.
I don’t think the game operates as a metaphor for abortion at all. It contains themes that reference abortion (sometimes in a darkly comedic way), but the initial premise very closely reflects the biblical story of the binding of Isaac. Like @Ooyah commented, the video game Isaac is struggling to understand why his mother would abuse him. Because he has been raised with religion (specifically Christianity), he applies what he understands from the Bible to explain his circumstances. As a result, he imagines God has instructed his mother to kill him. He sees himself as evil, which contributes to his belief he should be dead/punished.
McMillen’s games frequently flirt with imagery and themes which would be considered offensive. Whether he is doing this to outright offend people, make a joke, or challenge us to think differently (or all of the above), his artistic decisions will certainly turn off some potential players. To respond to @SwitchVogel, I don’t think he is trying to create an ongoing conversation. He is showing how religion can be twisted to cause harm. To create a conversation assumes that all parties involved want to listen to one another and learn from each other. Based on what I know of McMillen, I don’t think he particularly cares or needs to learn from those who wish to discuss the virtues of religion. Those looking to have a conversation may need to look elsewhere.
As a final side note for @Not_Soos, the majority of Islamic and Jewish people are actually pro-choice, at least in the United States (don’t know for the rest of the world). Christianity is predominantly pro-life.
As for the update, itself, I’ve been enjoying it over this last weekend. The changes to Greed mode are especially welcome.
I’ve played since the N64/Gameboy Color generation and was able to buy most games I wanted to play since the Wii/DS generation. Although the Wii U is still my favorite console in terms of its innovation, it was a rough time with a ton of disappointments. My ranking would be:
I found the first film tiring due to the product placement and stale pop-culture humor. Detective Pikachu was more enjoyable for me, but I know a ton of kids have loved the Sonic movie. It’s strange to see a generation of Sonic fans who have never played a Sonic game.
The article and comments have mentioned some truly great soundtracks (including Gris and Night in the Woods). Other greats that haven’t been mentioned yet include:
-Crypt of the Necrodancer
-Florence
-Haven
-The House in Fata Morgana (when it doesn’t loop endlessly)
-Hotline Miami Collection
-Minit
-Neurovoider
-Nidhogg 2
-Thumper
Like @Browny, I still have my Switch I bought on launch day, and it has no issues. Same goes for my partner’s Switch. We play almost exclusively in docked mode, so while we have had issues with John-Con drift, everything else runs great.
Good to see this addition! I unfortunately disliked the game, so I won’t be returning to it. I’ll be interested in hearing what people think of the new voice actors because I couldn’t quite get a feel for them in the trailer.
Can’t say I’m too choked about this. I get why people are upset, but I think “destructive” is taking it a little far. Everything will disappear with time. There are some things we need to remember; I just don’t think Wii U and 3DS games are those things.
I would prefer having no dungeons at all. I liked the transition to the smaller, more focused shrines. Even then, I preferred challenges like Eventide Island where you still had that sense of adventure and discovery.

So, to answer your question, burning money in a pit of fire is different from spending money on camgirls on Twitch because one involves fire and the other doesn’t necessarily have to. They’re different fetishes, if we want to make broad generalizations.
As for the game, I assume they make it because it generates money, which can later be used on camgirls or fire pits.
From this, we can come to the conclusion that Gal*Gun must appeal to those who neither prefer camgirls nor fire.
When I replayed DK64 on the Wii U, I couldn’t believe how I had liked that steaming pile of garbage when I was younger. I’ve only played the first two worlds in Banjo so far, but it’s been fantastic. The camera is fiddly, but everything else has awakened that hopeful little child trapped within me.
I may have to eat my words if the controversy is related to the game’s themes, but I still highly doubt it. In my brief search on the internet, I didn’t see any negative comments toward the game, apart from it disappearing suddenly. Usually a “cancellation” occurs after some Twitter escapade.
I would also assume Plague Inc. would be caught in the crossfire if pandemic-related games were in danger of cancellation.
I laughed at the thought that this game was being removed due to a name controversy. But then it seems people are taking it seriously or using it to complain about the pandemic. Never a dull moment.
I bet there are some copyright issues. At the very least, this game about curing a pandemic is not being canceled a little over two years since the start of our current pandemic due to its title and themes.
Thanks for the Running Shine mention. I didn’t expect to stick with it for the entire two hours, but it was a great review. As a plus, I don’t need to play the game anymore.
I have to start avoiding the comment sections on these articles.
Good on the developers for what they did. To echo what @somebread said, if removing this cosmetic upsets you that much, you really need to reconsider who is acting more sensitive in this issue.
It’s great to see this review finally come out! It’s my GOTY, and I sorely miss the joys of playing it. Reading through other text-based games hasn’t been as fun since.
I don’t care whether it’s boobs, butts, blood, or gore, I just want a solid tower defense game on the Switch. This doesn’t look like it’s worth its sauce.
Having grown up with the relatively bug-free releases by Nintendo, I now can’t stand the bugs and crashes that plague many games these days. From the reviews I have read and the comments on here, it seems Saints Row will be too unreliable, so I’ll be skipping it despite its generous discount.
I think the number of games played is which games you have opened on your account this year rather than the number of new games you’ve tried. Otherwise, I’ve played 97 new games over this year, which is thankfully inaccurate.
I played a ton of games this year which had been released prior to this year, so I’ve missed out on the big ones like Metroid Dread so far. My Top 5 ending this year would be:
5. Little Nightmares II
4. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
3. Tetris Effect: Connected
2. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance
1. The House in Fata Morgana
Return of the Obra Dinn was the best game I played this year that didn’t come out this year.
I beg to differ. He should totally do it. With PJ O’Reilly helming the review, we’ll have consistency between reviews and an entertaining theater of war in the comments.
I saw your name on one of the Isaac dailies, so I was interested in hearing how much a fan you are. If I combine my Rebirth hours, I think I match your time played, but I certainly did not have the stamina you had for Afterbirth.
@Arawn93
I agree, but it feels accurate. My takeaway from that is that it would have been nice to have a full-blown sequel rather than another expansion. As Gipp mentioned, 20 new characters is great. Playing Greedier with 20 new characters is not, but you will need to if you want to see all of the content.
So far, it feels like a massive improvement over Afterbirth+, which I felt was a step back from Rebirth. I don’t mind most of the nerfs, even if they are startling the first time you encounter them. I restarted a save file when I bought this expansion, so I still have yet to even touch the tainted characters, but I can say at least the base game seems to have improved.
If my voice was as good as the singer’s in the trailer, I consider this because I love music games. If I use what I have, my partner would wonder why there’s a dying walrus in the living room.
