Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Talk About Games By Comparing Them To Other Games?

Solomon_Rambling

In psychology, a prototype is “the best or average exemplar of a category, used for concept formation.” What this means is we have a mental image of something that can be generalized to understand similar objects/things/ideas. When you think of a bug, your first image may be a spider, ant, butterfly, etc., and this is your prototype. You don’t think all bugs look like your prototype; however, you assume all bugs are similar to it. This process helps you categorize new things without having to reinvent a mental image.

I bring this up because I have no problem with comparisons to other games. Sure, a game needs to be judged on its own merit, but games don’t exist in a vacuum. By comparing a new game to Zelda, Mario, or Minecraft (often our genre prototypes), I have readily developed a core understanding of what this game is. With this understanding out of the way, the review or description can now focus on what makes the us game different. We think in prototypes, so I think the comparisons can be helpful.

This is not to say that journalists/reviewers/writers don’t overuse comparisons. I’d argue too many comparisons reflect negatively on the writer rather than on the concept of comparisons.

Personally, I also want to know how a game compares in quality to other games in the genre. I’m very particular with my Metroidvanias, so if a Metroidvania isn’t better than Iconoclasts, I’m not particularly interested.

Re: Feature: How Video Games Can Be Brilliant For Your Mental Health

Solomon_Rambling

I like their comments on distraction and avoidance, noting how video games can be helpful and harmful. I hope the discussion on video games can progress to the point that more articles clarify when you should and should not evaluate how you play or how your children play. As Kate mentioned, video games provide a wonderful medium for self- exploration and expression. However, parents need to be more mindful of age ratings and online engagement, especially with the prevalence of shooter games. As with everything, balance and moderation with video games are key to a healthy and happy life!

Re: Feature: 11 Switch Games To Play During Mental Health Awareness Month

Solomon_Rambling

I'm surprised Lydia wasn't mentioned, given how much Nintendo Life enjoyed it.

Soul Searching has some very interesting themes, even if its gameplay struggles.

All the other games mentioned are solid. I agree with @Mario_maniac that What Remains of Edith Finch is an exceptional game about grief, loss, and mental illness. It has so many layers to it that's it worth an extra playthrough. Gone Home and Firewatch also offer good stories but not quite to the level of Edith Finch.

Re: The Binding Of Isaac: Repentance Receives Huge Update, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Solomon_Rambling

@Not_Soos

I don’t think the game operates as a metaphor for abortion at all. It contains themes that reference abortion (sometimes in a darkly comedic way), but the initial premise very closely reflects the biblical story of the binding of Isaac. Like @Ooyah commented, the video game Isaac is struggling to understand why his mother would abuse him. Because he has been raised with religion (specifically Christianity), he applies what he understands from the Bible to explain his circumstances. As a result, he imagines God has instructed his mother to kill him. He sees himself as evil, which contributes to his belief he should be dead/punished.

McMillen’s games frequently flirt with imagery and themes which would be considered offensive. Whether he is doing this to outright offend people, make a joke, or challenge us to think differently (or all of the above), his artistic decisions will certainly turn off some potential players. To respond to @SwitchVogel, I don’t think he is trying to create an ongoing conversation. He is showing how religion can be twisted to cause harm. To create a conversation assumes that all parties involved want to listen to one another and learn from each other. Based on what I know of McMillen, I don’t think he particularly cares or needs to learn from those who wish to discuss the virtues of religion. Those looking to have a conversation may need to look elsewhere.

As a final side note for @Not_Soos, the majority of Islamic and Jewish people are actually pro-choice, at least in the United States (don’t know for the rest of the world). Christianity is predominantly pro-life.

As for the update, itself, I’ve been enjoying it over this last weekend. The changes to Greed mode are especially welcome.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Solomon_Rambling

I’ve played since the N64/Gameboy Color generation and was able to buy most games I wanted to play since the Wii/DS generation. Although the Wii U is still my favorite console in terms of its innovation, it was a rough time with a ton of disappointments. My ranking would be:

5. Wii U/3DS
4. Gamecube/GBA
3. N64/GBC
2. Wii/DS
1. Switch

The Switch has largely been everything I have wanted from Nintendo.

Great article!

Re: 10 Of The Best Nintendo Switch Soundtracks

Solomon_Rambling

The article and comments have mentioned some truly great soundtracks (including Gris and Night in the Woods). Other greats that haven’t been mentioned yet include:

-Crypt of the Necrodancer
-Florence
-Haven
-The House in Fata Morgana (when it doesn’t loop endlessly)
-Hotline Miami Collection
-Minit
-Neurovoider
-Nidhogg 2
-Thumper

I look forward to Part II!

@Royalblues

So, to answer your question, burning money in a pit of fire is different from spending money on camgirls on Twitch because one involves fire and the other doesn’t necessarily have to. They’re different fetishes, if we want to make broad generalizations.

As for the game, I assume they make it because it generates money, which can later be used on camgirls or fire pits.

From this, we can come to the conclusion that Gal*Gun must appeal to those who neither prefer camgirls nor fire.

Re: 'Pandemic' Will Apparently Be Removed From The Switch eShop This July

Solomon_Rambling

@Spiders

I may have to eat my words if the controversy is related to the game’s themes, but I still highly doubt it. In my brief search on the internet, I didn’t see any negative comments toward the game, apart from it disappearing suddenly. Usually a “cancellation” occurs after some Twitter escapade.

I would also assume Plague Inc. would be caught in the crossfire if pandemic-related games were in danger of cancellation.

Re: 'Pandemic' Will Apparently Be Removed From The Switch eShop This July

Solomon_Rambling

I laughed at the thought that this game was being removed due to a name controversy. But then it seems people are taking it seriously or using it to complain about the pandemic. Never a dull moment.

I bet there are some copyright issues. At the very least, this game about curing a pandemic is not being canceled a little over two years since the start of our current pandemic due to its title and themes.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2021? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites

Solomon_Rambling

I played a ton of games this year which had been released prior to this year, so I’ve missed out on the big ones like Metroid Dread so far. My Top 5 ending this year would be:

5. Little Nightmares II
4. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
3. Tetris Effect: Connected
2. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance
1. The House in Fata Morgana

Return of the Obra Dinn was the best game I played this year that didn’t come out this year.

Re: Mini Review: The Binding Of Isaac: Repentance - A Welcome Rebalance For The Roguelite Classic

Solomon_Rambling

@BenAV

I saw your name on one of the Isaac dailies, so I was interested in hearing how much a fan you are. If I combine my Rebirth hours, I think I match your time played, but I certainly did not have the stamina you had for Afterbirth.

@Arawn93

I agree, but it feels accurate. My takeaway from that is that it would have been nice to have a full-blown sequel rather than another expansion. As Gipp mentioned, 20 new characters is great. Playing Greedier with 20 new characters is not, but you will need to if you want to see all of the content.

Re: Mini Review: The Binding Of Isaac: Repentance - A Welcome Rebalance For The Roguelite Classic

Solomon_Rambling

So far, it feels like a massive improvement over Afterbirth+, which I felt was a step back from Rebirth. I don’t mind most of the nerfs, even if they are startling the first time you encounter them. I restarted a save file when I bought this expansion, so I still have yet to even touch the tainted characters, but I can say at least the base game seems to have improved.
