Update [Mon 30th Sep, 2024 19:30 BST]:
In case you missed it — like us (darn Zelda) — following ratings in Taiwan earlier this summer, the 2D combat-focused Metroidvania Nine Sols has been confirmed for Switch.
Red Candle Games' acclaimed Sekiro-inspired game is coming to the eShop on 26th November 2024, and to celebrate, we got a brand new trailer, too.
For more details on the game, check out our original story below...
Original article [Mon 5th Aug, 2024 16:45 BST]:
Red Candle Games is best known for cult horror hits Detention and Devotion, both of which are absolutely excellent and well worth picking up. But the studio's newest game is something completely different from the team, and while the game is currently exclusive to PC, a new rating suggests that it will be coming to Nintendo Switch.

Spotted by Gematsu, Nine Sols has been rated for all consoles including Switch in Taiwan. The game is a blend of Hollow Knight and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a potent combo that combines beautiful 2D platforming and combat that focuses heavy on parrying and breaking enemy guard.
You play a Yi, a forgotten hero who is awoken from his slumber by a human child. He must save the realm of New Kunlun, a stunning Taopunk world, from the 9 Sols, rulers of the land.
Reviews for the game, which launched on Steam back in May, are positively glowing. Opinion pieces keep dropping even a few months after launch, and the word is that this is a brutal, beautiful adventure. The launch date trailer up top should give you a good idea of just how stunning the game looks, at the very least.
We hope that a console release is confirmed soon (ratings don't always guarantee this, remember!), because it sounds like this game deserves a lot of attention.
Have you played Nine Sols? Do you want to see this on Switch? Let us know down below.

Reminds me too much of Hollow Knight...and to me that is a bad thing.
I enjoyed Detention and probably would’ve checked out Devotion if it came to the Switch. It’s awesome Red Candle Games is getting some more recognition, but I may pass on Nine Sols. I’ve served enough time playing brutally tough games, and I’m fine settling into the easier side of gaming.
Seems like a game not for me considering its mechanics and so most likely difficulty but still, happy to see it potentially coming to Switch!
I've seen a lot of hype surrounding this game for sure, and from clips I've seen a lot of fascinating things going on.
It's something I came across whilst looking into Bo and the Teal Lotus, and was disappointed to see that it was only on PC.
News that it may be coming to consoles including Switch? Fantastic.
At first glance this looks extremely similar to Bo, down to the two letter protagonist hah. Both games look cool though.
Seems like the kind of game I'll buy, play excitedly for a while, be kinda bad at and never finish.
But I'll still buy it.
isnt this by the studio that got review bombed on steam due to apposing a Chinese government member?
I look forward to more info on this. I'm not sure it's my cup of tea, but I'm interested at least.
This game has been talked about a lot on the Metroidvania subreddit, and basically universally loved as the next best thing since Hollow Knight. Been hoping for a switch port!
Could we get a Devotion port (despite the controversy around the game) to Switch everywhere except PRC?
@Solomon_Rambling a Devotion port would be awesome on Switch but considering the controversy of the game, I’m not sure Nintendo would want it.
Gimmie gimmie gimmie. Love the look of it.
to my wishlist!
I haven't played this game but I'm waiting for it to come on switch while trying to beat my top 10 Soulslike Metroidvania games & after beating Grimvalor Hollow Knight and Recently Blasphemous & plus I'm almost done beating HAAK
Games like this one will from this day forth be called Sols-likes.
I was hoping this would come to Switch.
Looks amazing.
Sure it looks like HK and Bõ and to me that can only be a good thing.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
@anoyonmus
I didn’t know of the controversy. Thanks for the context! If I’m reading it right (the game contained a reference to a certain world leader), I’m disappointed that such small “joke” drew such a petty response.
It's the best game to play while we wait for Silksong
@Solomon_Rambling They could just port the game to every country except ya know...
It's got an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user rating on Steam, (the highest possible rating), with over 8,000 reviews.
And an "83" score on MetaCritic.
@silver-crescent I often confuse this game for Bo, haha.
@anoyonmus They certainly wouldn't since Nintendo has connections with Ten-cent whom are supposedly linked to the Chinese government.
This game has some creepy stuff in it. I might be interested!
@silver-crescent Nine Sols released first, and thematically is a very different game from Bo.
@Freek Bo came out after this. But it's a very different feeling game. Nine Sols is actually pretty dark and unnerving. It's like Sekiro, Aeon Flux, and Shigurui Death Frenzy had a baby. The combat is very fast paced and parry heavy. The story involves a lot of "science gone too far" and is fairly brutal. It is definitely one the best Metroidvania's I've played though. I would say it's closer to Blasphemous than Hollow Knight. But definitely a 9/10, and I can't wait to have it come to Switch also.
@Pod If you are into action heavy, combat focused MVs and Anime from the 90s then you are in for a treat. It's dark and heavy, and very skill gated (meaning your own skill). But it's quite excellent, and the best MV I've played since HK.
@Shigarui
Big metroidvania player here. Enjoyed Hollow Knight, The Messenger, and the remake of Dragon's Trap lately. Also previoously had a good time with both Metroid and Castlevania, of course. :v
@Pod It is not unlike the quick reflex focused Hollow Knight and The Messenger, although this combat is much more about being up on your opponent and parrying their attacks rather than keeping out of reach between attacks. That is the biggest difference. There are not nearly as many hidden areas, most of the time you can recognize that there is somewhere within the room that you are able to go, it is just a matter of figuring out a path there. I still think you will enjoy it, and the world building is really well done also. You definitely get enough of the backstory to fill in some blanks and realize just how depraved their pursuit of knowledge was.
@Shigarui
Oh, well, that does sound like a good time. I'm usually more interested in the development of how you traverse the areas as a player, than I am in the mechanics of combat, but this sounds like something that won't be too cumbersome.
@Valkian24 Nintendo will not put the game on the PRC Eshop. But they can put it on the Taiwan Eshop, Hong Kong SAR Eshop, and Macau SAR Eshop.
and ofc anywhere else they want to port it.
Love to see it confirmed for Switch for those interested (not sure if me included considering what I mentioned when the original article came out, but that's besides the point)!
This game was actually released before bo was on steam. Very excited to purchase and play this !
I heard lot of good things about it so if it runs well on Switch, I’ll pick it up.
Looks very promising
One thing I've learned in life is that in the context of games, "critically acclaimed" means close to nothing.
@Pod Did you try Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown? In my opinion, it's there with the best metroidvanias there are. Highly recommended if you like the genre.
This game picks my interest, people say it's pretty good. I hope it's not another overestimate game like Animal Well... What a dissappointment that was.
Coming to Switch in November with brand new… performance issues
Give me a physical and yes, I am well into this style of games at the moment.
Also love the art style
Lovely game but it's mad difficult in parts though. The artstyle reminds me of Okami somewhat.
Geez this looks a lot like Bo Path of the Teal Lotus (which I enjoyed). Glad to hear it’s quite different gameplay-wise. Might pick this up down the road.
@the_beaver
I didn't, but I've enjoyed previous series entries. :v
Played through this a few weeks ago. It's totally based around a parry mechanic... And it's wildly unbalanced. Best to play on story mode where you can adjust the damage given/taken sliders to even out the inconsistencies. I wouldn't recommend (I love Hollow Knight, Prince of Persia, Metroid Dread).
