Very recently we were lucky enough to sit down for a short while and sample the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2 and we're happy to report that it's shaping up to be a rather tasty treat. Of course, it wouldn't be a Nintendo game without some inexplicable little detail or quirk which seems to go against received wisdom and/or common sense.
Super Mario Maker 2 has online competitive and cooperative play; this is A Good Thing™. However, Nintendo has revealed a rather perplexing detail regarding online play with friends: it seems that... you can't.
Locally, you can play co-op games with up to four players on the same system, and competitive games where you've got a console and copy of the game each as well, linking up to four systems wirelessly. However, a Nintendo Treehouse rep has confirmed to Nintendo World Report that potential compromises arising from matchmaking via global leaderboards should you and your chums play online against strangers mean that playing with friends not in the immediate vicinity is off the cards. Okayyy. This also applies (inexplicably) to online co-op play, which doesn't involve leaderboards.
So, once again - and we're still a little confused by this so bear with us - this means that as things stand you cannot play competitively or co-operatively with friends online in Super Mario Maker 2.
We sort of expected some strange caveats to come to the surface as we discovered more about the game, and Nintendo hasn't disappointed. Remember when you couldn't share your Super Mario Maker 3DS levels online at all? The silver lining here is that we've seen the company patch in features post-launch with the original game, so if there's enough demand we could well see a change. But, to reiterate, it seems that you can't play with your friends in Super Mario Maker 2 online.
We're a bit confused, so we're just off to have a little lie down. Let us know your thoughts on these baffling revelations below.

Uhhhh, just make a ‘Ranked’ mode with strangers and another mode for playing with friends?
Dear Nintendo:
😡
Honestly, while this is bad, the apparent lack of Mystery Mushrooms is worse
Edit: Yep, they’re gone. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, and neither is a lack of online with friends, but they’re both very disappointing.
I never get why Nintendo is so consistently bad at online stuff. Its really not that difficult.
They always do something stupid
@WebHead There is some kind of mentality in most Japanese developpers of never ever listening to western, or even all, feedback.
Oh no, so I have to invite friends over and play with them personally, eye to eye. 😱
I don't give a damn about this! Games like that are MUCH more fun with friends around you in the same room.
@MH4 The Mystery Mushroom hasn't been announced yet, but I believe it will be included.
Wow... that’s pretty whack.
dang, I'm hoping they patch it in in the future, otherwise I'll pass
@PBandSmelly They'll never know what hit them. It's foolproof.
Wait so you can play co-op with one Switch? Is that confirmed?
@MrBlacky Most multiplayer games are more fun when playing with friends in the same room. That doesn’t mean that online play should be put on the shelf. Considering Nintendo is charging us for playing online, competitive online multiplayer should be a given.
I feel confident they will fix this one, though.
uh... Nintendo being Nintendo again totally not understandable with their choices again XD
It’s Nintendo. . .
Well that's dumb. Hopefully we at leastbget mystery mushrooms!
@Sinton
But you can play online with other people, or not?
@MrBlacky You can, but not with your friends.
My God nintendo lol, really don't think they thought this through. Hopefully can be patched in in the future ugh.
Welp, there goes my main reason for looking forwards to this game...
How about now @Spoony_tech 😉
@Sinton
I have to say, the only game I play regularly online is Splatoon 2 and from time to time a little bit SSMU and in both games I never ever cared about playing with friends. What difference does it even make?
I think this is Nintendo's way of getting back at all the groups of friends splitting the price of the $35 Family NO plan, they pay to play online but now they can't play with each other. 😎
So we are paying the online service for what ?
@MrBlacky As someone that also loves local co-op, and that's pretty much the only way I play games with friends, your view is incredibly naive. I'm not even going to bother coming up with scenarios as examples, but I'm sure you can stretch your imagination to think of a few situations in which you may want to play a game with a friend, but they don't happen to currently be under the same roof. More options are always a good thing.
@MrBlacky Then it goes without saying that the feature the rest of us want is not for you.
@MrBlacky Well, tons of players here point out how they have a Switch because of being able to play on the GO.
I cant invite Friends over to my office or hotel room in nowhere America when away from home. Assuming neither can most.
And my friends not coming over after work - they go home to their families and we play online later at night when things settle down.
I think MM2 looks like fun either way, and agree with you that local co-op is awesome... but Nintendo should try for both options.
They seem to mention global leaderboards as an issue which makes me think it could be due to a bug or something. There is always the possibility they could change and add it in post launch
@Agramonte
I'm sorry, but as I see it, multiplayer with friends is only real fun when I can see them, when I can hear them, when I can touch them ( to punch them in the face, if necessary) and perhaps to have a drink or two together while playing.
Even if it's happening maybe only once a month or even less, it's still a fun event and far more satisfying than playing with them online.
So I'm sorry, if I don't share your enthusiasm for online play modes, but in most cases I donˋt really care for them.🙂
@MrBlacky No one is saying it is "More fun" to play online than local co-op. Of course, most would choose local co-op when it's feasible. That doesn't mean that no co-op is somehow more fun than online co-op.
Jeez, Nintendo is SO dumb and out of touch sometimes. It’s like they don’t even want people to buy into their online service. There goes 2 sales, my 2 family members who own Switches definitely won’t pick this up if we can’t play online together. Complete idiocy.
It was too perfect to be true, wasn't it? Come on, Nintendo. It's 2019!! And what a terrible excuse.
I was looking forward to playing with my friend who lives in another state. Super disappointed. I'll probably still pick it up, but I'll be in less of a hurry. Come on, Nintendo. This is just silly.
@MrBlacky
I’ll just do the 200-mile drive to the people I’m most likely play this with them shall I?
This isn’t just about what you want, they should provide Options for everyone. There’s no viable defence for them not doing (it’s not even like the Online service is free anymore!)
First no Map Maker (come on, even Lunar has this), now this? Don't all of the other Nintendo games that are online-capable have a Play Against Friends option?
Nintendo, why do you have such a hatred for online play with friends? Is it because you think your audience is still 100% kids who can run down to their friend's house after school to play? Like in the 90s?
That world doesn't exist anymore, Nintendo. Kids have after school activities and more homework than ever. Online is becoming the most convenient way for them to play with others. Not to mention us modern adults that work and may not be able to see our friends that often due to conflicting schedules and tight time allowances. Playing games online might be one of the few ways we are able to interact regularly. Seriously, Nintendo... get with it.
I think they made it this way so that friends can't share levels easy to beat and climb the boards the fast way... If that's the case, I'll understand...
https://twitter.com/Nitomatta/status/1133427732598075392
Here is Nintendo's official statement
“This is true. As the game is now, you cannot create friend lobbies online. You can only play online with randoms."
That tells me there is a high chance we could see friend lobbies coming post launch
Nintendo of Europe confirmed on Twitter today that you can play online with friends via a Polygon retweet. This rumor that is coming from another fan site has no source and directly contradicts what Nintendo has officially posted online.
Two steps forward, one step back.
Yeah, this is very disappointing. Someone on a gaming forum already pointed out to me that this seemed to be the case soon after the Direct came out, based on the few moments shown in the Direct pertaining to this. I had originally been excited that I'd be able to play levels co-op with my brother and niece, who live across the country - literally the only people I know who would have and play the game. SMM2 is still a must buy for me, no question. But I sure hope they change this at some point. Seems remarkably stupid as it currently stands.
@MrBlacky
I live in New York and my brother lives in Idaho. Shall I travel 2500 miles to play a few SMM2 levels together? >_< Not everyone lives in close proximity to their friends and family. (And as for not being able to talk to the people while you play, there are countless ways to do that in this day and age. We do so frequently.)
@AlternateButtons Only creating and downloading them? Not.. you know.. playing them? With friends? Just kidding, I understand what you're saying, although I think you're wrong.
Everyone has their own reason to buy this game, even though it doesn't have to be yours. Some people like designing the stages, others like to beat really unfair stages made by someone else.
I like to play with my friends, local and multiplayer. As someone who isn't really that creative, I don't like designing stages. I actually don't like to play solo too.
And yes, I agree, local multiplayer is more fun than online multiplayer. But that doesn't mean it sucks, it's just not as great.
But what I liked about the online multiplayer, is that everyone can clear the stage or do whatever at its own pace, without depending on the other players because of the screen, something which is local not possible (unless every player has its own copy of MM2 + Switch). And since it's such a hassle everytime to gather all your friends to hangout at your casa and play Mario Maker 2 for just a few hours, just to probably never play it again with them, isn't worth it for me.
Now don't get me wrong, this game looks amazing. It just isn't worth the €60 for me, explained by the reasons above.
@ALinkttPresent
Don't spread false information. That tweet is nowhere to be found, the rumor has been comfirmed by Polygon and GameXplain, who asked a Nintendo rep.
No reason they couldn't add this in through a software update though right? I hope they will anyway.
They really need to outsource their online efforts or restructure internally.
It's pretty obvious that someone incredibly arrogant and ignorant at Nintendo is getting in the way.
It isn't this difficult, the rest of the industry seems to have figured it out decades ago.
Who would want to play online with random strangers in a map building game?
Let alone without proper voice chat?
Friends are the Only people I can imagine wanting to play this with. Who cares about leaderboards in a game that will never be balanced?
Just plain stupid. What is the major obstruction here? Do they not have internet in Japan? .....
Just the fact that they are bothering with leaderboards still in 2019 shows how out of touch they are. Leaderboards were a failed experiment 2-3 generations ago already. They get manipulated and hacked and lose any credibility the first week of going live.
Companies with more money, knowledge, talent, resources, et all have already made all these mistakes for 3 decades so Nintendo doesn't have to.
You don't have to be a fortune teller to know what's going to happen. The internet and the way people behave isn't new. People are going to gravitate towards maps designed to rack up points. Cheesy low effort maps that net lots of points will send boosters to the top and ruin it. There's no way to accurately dole out points in a custom map scenario. Leaderboards are a waste of time and are being used as an excuse for their ineptitude and lack of effort.
The primary draw of a builder game is to share your creations with and challenge your friends NOT play solo to climb a compromised leaderboard.
Leave it to Nintendo to announce a very requested feature for their game only for them to do something weird where it almost negates the point of having asked for the feature in the first place. Only Nintendo. The online multiplayer announcement made me a day 1 buyer, but this almost makes me want to forgo the game. Does it at least have same console local co-op?
@SuperCesco I think thats the reason too.
It doesn't bother me at all as I have no friends to play with so random folk online is cool for me 😜
So Nintendo want to charge me £20 to play online with my friends and then make online games that I cant play with my friends? Genius
@MrBlacky I agree, but I still hope they patch it in for everyone else who have friends near or far.
@SuperCesco A simple solution to Nintendo's "concern" of cheating the leaderboard/rankings would be simply to disable rankings while playing friends' courses/with friends online. Kinda like their local wireless play already does by default and how Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart 8D, Smash Battle Arenas, ARMS online already operate. But that would be too sensible for Nintendo.
@pacostrano I don't get the online, I'll be cancelling mine when the year is up.
It has no benefits at all
@Saego It's about the 5th Tweet from the top on Nintendo of Europe's Twitter account, and you can also check the retweet list of the Tweet itself to find Nintendo of Europe listed.
https://twitter.com/Polygon/status/1133357701436715015?s=09
@Rocky2418
Look, if Nintendo wouldn't allow online sharing of levels in SMM, or if they would announce, that Metroid Prime 3 is multiplayer only, or Luigi's Mansion 3 is an on-rail shooter, I would be all the way with you guys and your overdramatic [removed] and whining. 👍
But in this case, it's just a nice-to-have but not a must-have. I mean, most people are reacting like, this is the worse thing ever and now the game is literally the greatest piece of garbage and not even worth a penny (okay, maybe a bit exaggerated, but you get the point).
Edit: Besides, there are plenty of other games you can play with friends online, or not?
Welp Nintendo has screwed up on online before and it seems they’ve done it again
@MrBlacky My feelings exactly. I don't really see the point in playing non-ranked multiplayer with friends over the internet anyway. It'd be fun for a few minutes but soon after you will want to be playing ranked. Being able to do this offline (which you can) is more fun, you could easily make a competition out of it and have a blast.
You could play LittleBigPlanet on PS3 with friends and strangers at the same time back in 2008...
Par for the course for Nintendo
@MrBlacky
No, it's hardly the worst thing ever - nor did I say it was. (To the contrary, I said the game was still a must have for me.) But it also doesn't seem like a super complicated thing for Nintendo to include - and is also just common sense in this day and age, assuming you are including online play in the first place, like this game is. That's really all that most of us are saying. Not a big dramatic deal.
@ALinkttPresent
What exactly is it that you think this tweet proves?
@AlternateButtons Ofcourse, when you're excited about Mario Maker before the direct, the lack of multiplayer with friends won't be a dealbreaker.
But there were also people, who thought that you could play online with friends after the Direct and got excited and wanted to buy the game, just to play with their friends far away, or something. Ofcourse, Nintendo never communicated that SMM2 would have online multiplayer with friends, but it looked like it. Also, implementing online multiplayer just so you can play with randoms and not friends doesn't make sense, but I think we can all agree on that. But I hope you (and everyone else) will enjoy the game, and that Nintendo adds online multiplayer with friends. I don't mind waiting for that.
@ALinkttPresent
Nintendo just retweeted that there will be multiplayer. Something we know for a long time now. It doesn't say anything about playing online with friends.
The only thing I'm bummed about is the lack of amiibo support.
@Rocky2418
You are absolutly right. Nintendo shouldn't have included online multiplayer in this game.
Not being to play competitively locally with friends stung, but I understood it. But if we really can't play online at all with our friends... then that is truly a slap in the face.
"We've finally added online multiplayer to 2D Mario! Oh, but not with your friends." That just doesn't seem right.
@BLD The article specifically states that you can play online with friends
EDIT: Here's the sentence from the article: "That competition will be more direct in the sequel; players can team up or battle with friends, both locally and over the internet."
Dang Nintendo get it together!
[removed]
No politics please - Octane
Please excuse my lack of understanding:
Is this article saying that you can play online against/with anyone else in the world, but not people who are on your friends list?
@Saego Here's the quote from the article: "That competition will be more direct in the sequel; players can team up or battle with friends, both locally and over the internet."
Glad other than a few most here can agree nintendo is doing this all wrong. I guess everyone's a hater and not just happy getting whatever online nintendo thinks is adequate. Sadly I'm still buying the game.
if this isn't in the first patch...then they have failed their consumers/fans. What is the point of the Online App they are pushing if they won't even introduce a lobby function to play with friends
don't worry, the feature will be available in super Mario maker 3. (whenever they decide to release it.)
Everyone be happy. The online costs as much as a happy meal. Have realistic expectations.
@sixrings Has 0 to do with servers or money. Don't be a fool that's quickly separated from their money.
Or, heck, you know what, keep doing it. **** it. Just give everyone all of your money that you clearly don't need.
@Ryu_Niiyama I suspect we will see these and Mystery Mushrooms after Smash reveals.
Foundationally speaking, there is no excuse to NOT buy MM2, as I recall the days of Wii U when we shared our levels and stream our experiences. We were having good times back then and I dont see why not now if its pretty much the same experience with some expansions. Yeah, no online multiplayer with friends is a disappointment, but its going to sell, nonetheless. Now with all that said... https://twitter.com/Nitomatta/status/1133427732598075392?s=19
There is still a chance here.
@KingBowser86: I was just about to say that. As long as Nintendo makes a profit off Amiibo, they have no reason to stop it.
@Everyone_Else: Still getting this game. This is actually the reason I an currently a NSO subscriber.
@KingBowser86 Why do you assume that? Nintendo supposedly confirmed with gamexplain that there was no amiibo support. I doubt they would patch in something that was a clearly advertised feature on the first one rather than just bake it in normally.
I really hope Animal Crossing Switch won't heavily rely on NSO, because I just keep finding reasons to allow my subscription to expire come September. They really should have kept the online free with the paltry amount of benefits they have given us thus far.
@ALinkttPresent I want you to be right. However, multiple sites (one which is GameXplain) asked a Nintendo representative if there would be online multiplayer where you can play with friends, who denied that.
So either the Nintendo rep made a mistake, or the Polygon author. I hope it's the first, we will see.
If this affects you, by all means proceed to complain. There’s no reason they shouldn’t add the option.
But this doesn’t affect me... I don’t play Mario Maker Online with friends (won’t even play it online with randoms, much less the single digit friends in my list who may or may not even buy the game to begin with).
If I want someone to play my level, I’ll share the download code or they can search me. My levels are gonna be designed for single player. I’ll happily share the level with friends who buy the game, so they can try it out at their leisure. That’s about as far as I care to take it with Mario Maker.
@Saego Yeah, 2 or 3 sites saying the same thing is cause for concern. However, I don't have any more reason to believe GameXplain than I do Nintendo World Report. I'm sure there was just some miscommunication down the line or something. We'll see for sure once the game came out, but right now I'm choosing to believe the article that Nintendo verified rather than the other one.
After all, this is a pretty ridiculous and hard to believe news story lol
@WebHead
I'm loosing hope that they will ever change. It's so frustrating.
Of course this article has more comments than the positive one that basically says this game contains more than we dreamed of. Classic Nintendo Life commenters.
Who loves Mario Maker.
This will be the same but better.
BETTER.
let’s not pretend. We will all buy it
It's a bizarre omission but it's also like the least important feature for me personally so oh well, I'm really not bothered. They'll probably add it with an update sooner or later.
it's a little disappointing. but, it won't effect me much on this game. that being said, i still do plan on buying it.
That's it then, I'll just have to delete Miyamoto from my friends list so that I can still whup his @ss online in this.
@Ryu_Niiyama It would be if significant leaks of Smash data were possible. And there are clearly other features that we haven't seen yet. Plus, amiibo courses were too popular for them to just do away with (not to mention the extra sales).
Joke's on them, I have no friends!
@MrBlacky
Sigh... Obviously that was neither what I said or insinuated, but whatever you'd like to think, I suppose.
I guess what's strange is that you care enough to argue with so many people, considering the fact that it's a matter that you "don't give a damn about" - as you originally said. This missing feature affects many of us because the Direct originally gave us the impression that we'd be able to play an indefinite amount of levels with friends and family that we otherwise can't play such levels with. This news was at least a little disappointing, so we left a comment about it. It sounds like the news doesn't affect you at all, so why comment so much about it? I personally only care about 10% of the articles on this site, at most - the rest I don't even click on. And of those, I probably only care enough about 10% of them to comment on them. If it doesn't affect me, it's counter-productive for me to voice an opinion or start up arguments. The only reason I can see to do so is to stir up contention for sport. If that's the case here, well done, I guess.
Nevertheless, I'll gladly let you have the last word. No hard feelings.
Seriously? This is Mario people, when have you ever been able to play online with others? Never. Mario is not and never has been a online game.
hahaha oh Nintendo .....you're such a huge joke when it comes to online capabilities in any form. A huge 21st century joke ...... come on....enough of this junk already.
Go home Nintendo, you're drunk.
Rats!!! Love playing with my online friends.
Yikes. The mob mentality on this is disturbing. I refuse to believe that anyone cares about this as much as everyone is saying they do.
You were going to buy this game before you even knew that it was going to include online multiplayer, and you’re still going to buy it. Because you know that at most you’ll have like two friends that also own this game, and that at most you’ll play together like three or four times, and then you’ll go back to making levels and playing other people’s levels by yourself, which is exactly what you were planning on doing before you ever learned that this game would include online multiplayer.
Seriously, get over it.
I don't know anyone else IRL with a Switch, and friends on Switch online are pointless due to the lack of party chat, but this is really dumb.
Online is great if you can actually talk to people....
Not interested in the game, but if I was this wouldn't really be the deal breaker for me. Nintendo's online is.
@MrBlacky Agreed. Glad I’m not the only one here who’s willing to point out the absurdity of people’s reactions to this.
What's the big deal? Just play one of the dozens of NES games with your virtual friend instead.
@SonOfVon Really? So let me get this straight. You weren’t going to buy this game BEFORE this story broke, right? Because basically what you’re saying is that you would only buy this game if you could play it online with your friends, and there’s never been a time when it was even assumed that such a feature would be included, let alone confirmed. And if that’s the only feature you’d be buying Mario Maker for, then it’s definitely not the right type of game for you.
@Itzdmo I agree with every single word about leaderboards. Who the heck actually gets 9,999,999 points. Even if you did I wouldn’t believe you did it legitimately. And who cares in a game like Mario Maker. Instead I’d like to see us get ratings, like Likes or Subscribes for example, something to reward quality level construction, instead of points feeding on point mining levels.
THAT BEING SAID... I can’t wait to buy this game and play some levels. If it puts a smile on my face then I’ll be happy.
There we go, a deserved backlash before the release.
@MrBlacky Good for you?
F#@$1ng Nintendo...
@MrBlacky Oh, so it's my fault for having friends in other states and countries then?
Why? Nintendo is all about play with friends and family yet most of their games you can't. It's such a joke and one I'm getting sick of.
I find this pretty dumb and I don't even have friends to play with. Still, not going to stop me from buying the game
@nessisonett To expand, a Ranked mode which is strangers only, and a casual mode which can include friends only OR the option to also include strangers, on the chance you have less than 3 other friends to play with at any given time (i.e. Splatoon 2 Salmon Run)
2019 and Nintendo are still complete screw ups when it comes to online.
Well you cannot play against friends online on the Souls games either.
The core game still looks fantastic, but this is disappointing along with mystery costumes being cut. And yes, I actually used the mystery mushrooms frequently and wished for online friend co-op since Mario Maker 1. The "leaderboard" reasoning just confirms Nintendo's complete ineptitude regarding anything online.
Also, this isn't the first time that a misguided focus on "rankings" had a negative effect on a Nintendo game's content/options......look at Mario Tennis Aces. It took them eight months to add a COURT SELECT, and it still doesn't have the complete set of match options that its N64 predecessor from 2000 (!) had. Not to mention Splatoon 2 lacking cloud saves (arguably the game that needs them the most).
When even commenters on Nintendo Life can't defend Nintendo's idiocy, you know they done effed up.
I was really disappointed to find out that there would be no local multiplayer without using separate consoles... that is until today, when it was confirmed that you actually CAN play local with just one system. So I empathize with everyone upset about no online play with friends.
The funny thing is no one was really expecting this until they confirmed online play, so they just set themselves up to disappoint. Poor communication from Nintendo.
Well, that's 60 bucks saved for me then. I'm gonna get Dragon Quest Builders 2 instead if anybody cares.
This kinda shoots the whole "push-the-online" thing in the foot. Why have online multiplayer at all if you can't include friends? Given that the online multiplayer has been such a big selling point til now, there are probably going to be some people wanting their pre-order refunds.
dumb move nintendo
"Nintendo" and "No Online play with friends" is like salt and pepper.
I expect online multiplayer with friends to be added later in a post-launch update, very much like the Mario Tennis and Smash Bros updates.
At least there will be a ton of "FIX ONLINE" stages when the game launches.
Soooo...day 2 purchase?
For as well as Nintendo does they are still a complete joke when it comes to anything online.
@MrBlacky ah yes, because everyones friends live close enough that's possible. Yeah, I agree it's better, but I wanna play with my friends in other countries too.
I play couch multiplayer mostly. But if I play online I EXCLUSIVELY play with friends. This isn’t a dealbreaker but it’s definitely a disappointment.
Cancelled my pre-order. Playing with friends is 95% of the reason I was excited for this. Inexcusable and mind-blowing.
i guess im not buying the game on day one that sucks
I am really, really, really sorry for your losses about not being able to play one specific game, online with your friends.🥺 I hope you and your friends can overcome this bitter times of tragedy.
PS: FineLerv, above me, has the right attitude. Disappointed, but doesn't make a big fuss about it. While most of the rest of you is like: "What a joke!", "Preorder cancelled!", "This game sucks now!", "Online sucks big time!", "Nintendo canˋt do anything right!", "Now me and my friends will never hear and see each other again!". 🙄
Was on the fence before.
I'll pass for now.
@BAN I played the hell out of the first one, and in order for me to buy the sequel it had to offer much more, not slopes and clear pipes but online, which would be awesome for me. now that they've said that's out of the question for now, so is my plan for getting it, what's the big freakin deal
This is disappointing. While I’ve always preferred gaming in the same room on the couch, I also have friends who live far away. I’m still excited as hell, but I hope they somehow find a way to remedy this.
@westman98 What Smash Bros. update are you referring to?
@ALinkttPresent
I referenced Smash as a game that recieved big updates that added substantial amounts of new content.
I see this as a win. Nintendo would be known as a homewrecker if they allowed you to play against people you could drive over to and stab at night. Remember Mario Party.
So we can't play co-op with friends either? If so, that's really dumb.
Switch online is a massive downgrade on Wii U.
Thinking about this again. Even if we could play with friends we still wouldn't be able to communicate without the dumb app. Can't nintendo just hire some ex xbox employees and get this all figured out. At least nintendo fans are reasonable that this is unacceptable when xbox has done these types of things for a decade plus.
@SonOfVon Yeah that’s still not really clarifying anything. I specifically want to know if you were or weren’t planning on buying this game before the news broke yesterday that this specific feature was being left out.
And apologies if my tone seems hostile. I’m honestly just curious. You’re under no obligation to respond to me.
@sixrings me and my friend just use discord but yeah something like that would be nice
But really I'm going to be super disappointed if MM2 doesn't have online co-op with friends, as I was really looking forward to that
If we needed a reminder that Nintendo doesn't understand online play...
@sanderev Your post is absolutely insane, and has zero basis in reality. What planet do you live on? Since when do most people give a damn about playing "ranked" in a Mario platformer? Why would it be only fun "for a few minutes" if you're not ranked? Do you not realize that most people CANNOT physically play with people they know in the same space? Why is there "no point" in playing online with friends? Your post is absolutely absurd and disconnected from what 99% of people, who are not obsessed with rankings, actually want. Stop excusing and justifying this omission based on trash reasons, as if it's a good thing.
@MrBlacky Amazing how you "don't give a damn" about this feature, yet you have a dozen posts here [removed] on people who are disappointed it's not there and acting like their preferred way of playing is invalid. You seem pretty disconnected from reality and obsessed with only your own very niche situation. Everyone I know who is buying this game, and who I would be playing with, lives in another city. That's just the reality. But sure, I'll just "invite them over" so I can "punch them in the face". It's so twisted how you almost seem happy about this.
@mj2k18
You're right! I want to invite them over, to punch them in the face (literally and not figuratively speaking, of course). 😂
May I ask: Are you playing dumb?🤨 I hope so.
@mj2k18 Since when do people give a damn about playing Mario online.. like at all? NO Super Mario game has had online multiplayer. And playing multiplayer Mario with friends really is the best when you have those friends sitting next to you.
Also I'm not excusing anyone or anything. I'm just giving you my honest opinion.
Simple facts:
1. Before the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct you had absolutely NO idea that it would ever have online multiplayer.
2. No Super Mario games in the past had online multiplayer.
3. The Direct did NOT say ANYTHING about the game having online multiplayer with ONLY friends.
I'm 100% not disappointing by the game or what the game has to offer. I already pre-downloaded it and it will be my main Switch game from the moment it releases.
Would it been nice if they added the online with friends multiplayer? Sure. But to be honest it would also be nice if it controlled my coffee machine and gave me a cup of coffee everytime I complete a level.
Actually I would prefer that feature, since I don't have online-only friends who have a Switch and are planning to buy Super Mario Maker 2.
Clearly though, you have your opinions and I have mine. We seem to be disagreeing on this part, though. So, let it go.
Nintendo is trying to bring people together, not allow them to connect is simply their way.
@sanderev What a trash response. So narcissistic and self-obsessed.
"I'm 100% not disappointing by the game or what the game has to offer. I already pre-downloaded it and it will be my main Switch game from the moment it releases."
Why do I care about that? Why are you so obsessed with the fact that YOU don't want it? Why are you adamant on continually posting in this thread, announcing how much this doesn't affect you? How would the option of playing with friends online affect you negatively in any way? It wouldn't, but it would affect millions in a positive way, so it's just so odd that you're falling over yourself expressing just how much you're fine with this, over and over again.
And your "simple facts" are outright false.
1- We didn't know for sure, but I, and many other assumed that it would. Based on the fact that it's 2019. Seems like a logical and rational assumption. Not that ambitious.
2- Not sure what your point is.
3- No, but it left the door open for that. Most who watched it found it weird that it didn't mention it specifically, only randoms, and then were devastated when it was confirmed.
Why does anyone care if you're "100% not disappointed" or that you pre-ordered it? We've already established that you don't care, as if that means anything to anyone who does. Also, your coffee machine analogy is asinine, intellectually dishonest, and ridiculously lazy and irrelevant. You can already play with randoms. You're comparing being able to play with friends as well, to the switch controlling a coffee machine?
If I express disappointment in the lack of this option, I wouldn't even bother if I knew I was the only one. But I know millions of others who planned to purchase the game are ALSO disappointed, and maybe you could have taken a hint from the amount of outrage about this online. I have zero interest in playing this alone, or with randoms. Playing with people you know is a completely different experience. My brother is in another city, and we were excited to play levels together, and both planned to purchase. Now, we have no interest.
Stop spending so much energy stanning for Nintendo and replying to others expressing your lack of desire for the feature. It's selfish and self-centered to an extreme extent. I'll never understand the point of posts like yours, doing your best to invalidate the preferences and experiences of others using your sample size of one, and gloating about the fact that you don't care about a missing feature, when so many others would have loved it.
It was NOT announced in the Direct. THAT and ONLY THAT is the FACT. The year the game released in has NOTHING to do with the game that is released.
BEFORE the Direct you had no IDEA that there would be any online multiplayer at all. NO absolutely NO SUPER MARIO GAME IN THE PAST HAS HAD ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. AT ALL.
The only thing Nintendo announced were:
1. Online multiplayer with leaderboards.
2. Online co-op multiplayer.
3. Local (they were very clear about it being local) multiplayer with friends and family.
They even left out that the game would feature same system multiplayer as well, but this was hinted at by the gameplay.
So now saying you won't buy the game because of an imaginary feature based on the year the game is released in is BS. Absolute BS.
These people are:
1. Parroting a very vocal minority that only care about online multiplayer with "friends".
2. People who just want to play online with "friends".
3. Trolls.
4. Sony / MS fanboys.
5. All of the above.
boy oh boy do I not regret ownin that sweet Wii U
