It looks like a certain Grass/Poison-type Pokémon that started out in Generation V could be returning in part one of the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion.
Twitter user and Pokémon fan @mattyoukhana_ appears to have discovered evidence of the mushroom-like pocket monster Amoonguss in the latest trailer for the game, which was aired earlier this week. This is the evolution of Foongus.
You can see it around the 2:53 mark in a brief shot featuring the expansion logos:
As this particular clip appears on the Isle of Armor side of the screen, there's a theory this Pokémon will show up in part one of the Expansion Pass later this month.
The possible return of this 'mon is considered to be a big deal by the competitive scene, as it's become a staple of the Pokémon Video Game Championships over the years. Some replies to the original tweet jokingly suggested it was "the return of the king" whereas other responses weren't so happy about the discovery.
How would you feel about the return of Amoonguss? Tell us down below.

Impossible, people hate that guy for lack of skill and this game is supposed to mix up meta drastically.
I thought the true kings of VGC were Garchomp and Therian Landorus. Granted, once Landorus comes back, he'll for sure be abused. Amoonguss is a good one, though.
@Kalmaro that's true and I hope it doesn't happen, but Lando-T is coming back, so I wouldn't hold my breath...
Aegislash got nerfed in the maingame (not in a patch), maybe amoonguss, landaros and others get nerfed too.
Amoongus has come back with rage...
powder
@Kalmaro If Magikarp is still here, anything is possible.
@Kalmaro gen 6 and 7 had prebank metas too, there wasn't any point
I just want my gen 3 starters, thats all
I just want MAGEARNA confirmed, I spent hours upon hours getting my original colour shiny magearna in pokemon home yet I can't use him....
As much as thought the base Sword and Shield games were alright at best, this DLC actually looks really good. The themes look very unique, there are a lot more returning Pokémon, and it looks like each DLC has interesting characters and storylines.
I’m still pretty torn though as issues with the main game are bound to persist... the always-on experience share and the underwhelming visuals being the main culprits. I’ll definitely be pondering about purchasing these over the next few weeks but they do look a lot pretty good.
Ya see, this is why I quit competitive pokemon. Everyone ALWAYS uses the exact same pokemon with the exact same moveset. 3DS days were abysmal, just Amoongus, Landorous, and Rotom Wash...
@Incarna You must not be in the VCG scene much then, this dude is loved and hated for being so brain dead simple and effective. The Twitter posts on this guy are hilarious.
@PBandSmelly Yeah competitive on 3DS was such a bore facing the same sets over and over. Most of em highly unoriginal Smogon sets which is far too limited and dull.
Could have had rotations on who could be used, say every 2 months and problem solved. Would require people to actually think differently for once. TCG I think(?) does something similar with only certain sets useable.
Never bothered with Amoongus myself, while I was competitive for a time never saw benefit to it.
A popular Pokémon, which is why it inspires responses like this; https://twitter.com/HamsterManiaVGC/status/1215318868945776641
Why make a whole article about just this one possible returning Pokemon?
Just an excuse for more flame wars on this site I guess.
@Kalmaro don't you just miss the days where the strongest trainers just used Charizard?
@Reigestugatensho Simpler times! I just miss the diversity. I know Smogun gets hate but at least they try to mix things up.
@playstation_king they wouldnt give it to you if it was a reward in home
A bit too clickbait-y for my tastes, but that’s to be expected.
Just more meh
@Kalmaro Lmao, really don't think they care for competitive if they ruined it with Dynamax and whatever
@fadedcolors But they said that balance would be restored after removing so much!
@TheLightSpirit I can see why you might think that for Smogon style single battles. But VGC is quite different.
@graysoncharles I doubt the decit people had anything to do with this.
Imo, the best solution would have been to just keep the Pokémon in the game, and ban which Pokémon could be used in competitions. Then we get a new meta and people can still collect their Pokémon, everyone wins.
@BeautyandtheBeer Exactly! Those were my immediate thoughts once GameFreak gave their reason behind including a limited Pokedex in Sword and Shield at E3. Why not just copy and paste the rest of the mons into the post-game, and if you're concerned about the competitive scene, rotate usable Pokemon every other month? Especially now that a competitive team is even more easily cartable in these games, I'd love to be using some of my Pokemon I've had since Diamond and Pearl right now - and since there would be a rotation, some of them might even be worth a spot on my team!
The other thing they could have done is just slightly nerf mons like Landorus-T and Garchomp and Ferrothorn and such. I mean, would it take that much time to bring slightly more balance to the game? I'm not actually sure, just spitballing.🧙🏻♂️
Nobody cares. This game was an absolute flop. Move onto the next game already, 😴.
Ah yes, this must be that balanced competitive gameplay they were on about.
Looking forward to Gigantimax Amoongus
This reminds me of how much Meta Pokemon Black/White had.
Ferrothorn
Amoongus
Elektross
etc.

You would think with them removing like, half of the roster they would have an easier time, guess not.
