Paper Mario: Sticker Star launched on the Nintendo 3DS back in late 2012, bringing the Paper Mario series to a handheld console for the very first time. It doesn't tend to be remembered quite as fondly as some other titles from the series, but still to this day it holds one of its greatest mysteries.
If you played through the game yourself and have a pretty good memory, you might just about remember picking up what appears to be a serial code. In W5-1 Shy Guy Jungle, you can stumble across a piece of paper that reads, "XD3R-B8HH-9ZR2-FL16". It's particularly noteworthy thanks to the fact that other papers found within the game don't feature codes like this, instead referring to other in-game characters and the like.
Strangely, scouring the internet for clues on what it could be used for brings up more confusion than anything; even now, no one seems to have any clue whether or not the serial key can actually be used on any service. 16-digit codes are often used on Nintendo stores - like when downloading games from the Switch's eShop - but the code is never valid. So what is it?
You can see the code be obtained at around the 9-minute mark in the video below (thanks, MarioBrothBlog):
So, was it just a random jumble of letters and numbers that never meant a thing? Or will someone one day discover a secret use for the code? Can you imagine if it unlocked a Paper Mario game on Switch as part of the supposed 35th anniversary remasters? Let's stop there before we get ahead of ourselves.

Just want to hop and say that I'm the one who loved this game and Colour Splash. It's me. Sorry.
Perhaps it had already been obtained by a member of staff? Or maybe it's just a dummy code that was put in the game to troll players? A scripting test? We may never know.
Nice! Makes me think of FEZ. I hope it's not that level of cryptic though...
On another note, I sure would love a port of Color Splash to Switch. I don't plan on ever getting the Wii U version.
@StuartGipp Never apologise for liking a game! I enjoyed Super Paper Mario on the Wii way more than any other 2D Mario game.
@StuartGipp I remember really wanting to like Sticker Star, and reviews weren't bad so I picked it up, but I just couldn't find any reason to keep playing after a couple of hours. Absolutely zero driving force. Glad someone managed to eek some enjoyment out of it, but I'll be so pleased if rumours of the game returning to it's roots are true.
@StuartGipp I loved it too
Color Splash was great like
Nothing on Paper Mario 2.
But still it was fun.
I loved Super Paper Mario on Wii as well as Sticker Star and Color Splash. But I eventually dropped out of Thousand-Year Door, sorry. Some sections (too many) were just too boring for me: too many wrestling combats to become number 1, a lot of back and forth in the jungle and so on. So there you are. There's a game for everyone.
Love splash and sticker star - sticker star was actually the reason to play Mario and Luigi games as well as Splash. Have fond memories !
Maybe it's a Windows serial key?
I couldn't get into sticker star at all. Bought the game twice! Hate everything about it. That said I looooveeeed color splash, would buy a switch port in a heartbeat
Mario discovered he was playing his own game. He's trapped in a video game.
@MJL
I felt exactly the same. Really wanted to like it.
The lack of a Paper Mario on the Switch is a crime. Just port us the first two and all is forgiven.
@StuartGipp sorry mate but you’re not the only one 😊. Love the game and 100% it. But hey I’m the Paper Mario is probably my favorite videogame series.
@RadioHedgeFund Super Paper Mario was amazing. It would be cool is they revisit the direction in the future.
eShop codes so far have always started with [number/A/B/C/D] and have the 2nd digit be a number.
Having it loop letter-letter-number five times makes it seem a bit too ordered to seem like a random key.
Though who knows what it actually means.
It's a code you have to enter on the Switch controller:
X, Down, 3x R, B, 8x double click "Home", 9x ZR, 2x Forward-Left and then 16
There you have it, problem solved.
@StuartGipp well, I'm with you on that. Both weren't the "return to form" I had hoped for but I enjoyed them far more than Super Paper Mario. I only hope it's true they're developing a game in the shadow of the first two on Switch.
Is it a friend code? I forget how long they were
@StuartGipp I am the other one who loves Sticker Star and I want to play Color Splash someday.
Inb4 the article gets inevitably featured in Saved You A Click Video Games' Twitter account.
@BadBadMountain the lack of a lot of things 3 years in is a travesty
I guess it may have been solved quicker if more people cared about this game.
@MJL That's me. Long time fan of the series. Even played Super Paper Mario and thought it was okay on account of the story.
BUT. Sticker Star! Boy, did I want to like it. Even finished the game. After that one I wouldn't buy Color Splash even if I owned a WiiU. Really hoping the rumours about it going back are true
@StuartGipp it's not just you, I enjoyed every minute of it. I get the argument that the battles didn't contribute anything in terms of leveling up etc. but they were fun. Ultimately they acted as an obstacle to your goal. That's what enemies and battles do. I can think of a few RPGs where the battles could trade of some purpose for a little more fun.
@Moonlessky nice to know someone else feels the same way! Never finished sticker star (tried to play through numerous times and just wasn't feeling it). I was skeptical of color splash but MAN it was good! It was what sticker star wanted to be. I want to beat it again but keep holding out hope Nintendo will put it on switch!
@Namelessd if they do port it I hope they make it easier to sort through your cards while in battle and maybe add a "block" and "do nothing" options to the fight. That game is hilarious and deserves a second chance on the switch! Im glad someone else loves it as much as me
@StuartGipp I loved Sticker Star, Color Splash, and the other PM titles. If you don't like some titles, or you do, there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different tastes.
I didn't like Sticker Star but I liked Color Splash a lot. Feel that like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Color Splash suffered a lot from being a Wii U game released after Nintendo announced they were abandoning the console in favour of NX.
@Giygas_95 On another note, I sure would love a port of Color Splash to Switch. I don't plan on ever getting the Wii U version.
4 posts in and the port begging begins. Can there ever be a topic about anything without someone port begging?
@Crono1973 I said I'd like it. I'm not in here screaming and crying. Take your attitude elsewhere.
When a game is loved, it gets a huge community of people who analyse it to all details and investigate their mysteries, people in the Super Mario 64 community may know more about the game than the people who made it.
But since Sticker Star was a very criticized game that made the Paper Mario community very upset, there aren't that many people determined to solve that mystery.
A Shy Guy wrote down a download code for a game he was going to download later. It’s just an Easter egg
@Giygas_95 You don't need to be screaming and crying to port beg.
@Crono1973 I said I'd like if it happened. Learn the freaking difference. And get over yourself. A comment saying I'd like if we got a port of it isn't hurting you.
@StuartGipp
Me too. I actually liked all five Paper Mario games thus far.
Though I'll admit SS and CS's battle systems have their share of flaws, I'd be lying to myself if I were to say that they're the worst battle systems I've ever experienced throughout my lifetime.
Screw the mystery of this key, there's still the random extra one from Key Cavern in all versions of Link's Awakening!
@Giygas_95 "Port-begging" is a term within the video game community that describes the act of requesting for a certain video game to be ported to another platform outside of the one it is currently available for.
@Crono1973 I don't give a damn. Get. Over. It.
@Giygas_95 I don't give a damn. Get. Over. It.
You started out your last post with 'And I didn't port beg' but then you deleted that part. I know because I got the email with your unedited post in it. I guess you realized that you did and now you say you don't care.
Since the beginning Switch owners have been port begging and it got old really quick.
@Crono1973 honestly why do you care? Expressing want for a game on your system of choice has been around for a long time, I don't get why it's suddenly an issue for Switch. He didn't direct his want at an official Nintendo channel either, so it doesn't really qualify as a request = NOT port begging
@PikaPhantom as far as I know it's because it would be possible to get stuck if you do the rooms in a certain order, without that extra key. Always bothered me too haha!
Eh, given my harsh opinion on this travesty of a game, I'm happy just leaving it to be forgotten.
@danothelegend I care because I got tired of seeing the port begging for the Switch long ago. It was extreme.
He doesn’t need to request it from Nintendo for it to be port begging. Even you can’t believe that nonsense.
It bloody better do if they never had it connect with ANYTHING. Even if it's just a Switch download of the mini games of the Super Mario 64 DS because they only remake the main game for the release. Something. Just something.
Looks like a save game code from the 8bit era.
Guess this is unpopular opinion hour but I thought M&L Dream Team, Paper Jam, Superstar Remake, and Inside Story remake were great. People seem to not like those.
@Crono1973 I'd like to see Mario 64 come to the Switch.
Oh, and Sunshine.
@RadioHedgeFund
I also loved super paper Mario. It was so much fun and different, like a mariotroidvania.
@Kungfunaomi Good for you, are you next going to claim that these games are ‘perfect’ for the Switch?
@StuartGipp I love Sticker Star as well! Both Sticker Star and Color Splash are a lot of fun. Some folks don't realize you can actually beat Sticker Star out of order. Grab the trumpet in World 1, enter World 3 and grab the fishing line, enter World 5 and beat it before even encountering a single previous World boss. Pretty cool structure, and it lends to good replay-ability. Color Splash is great as well except that every Koopaling boss fight destroys the pacing, as the required "thing" card is often really obscure and you have to just flee the fight or accept a game over. Even still, I've enjoyed every Paper Mario for different reasons. Super Paper Mario is my favorite!
I thought it was a password for an older game, but only game i could think of with 16 character passwords is Castlevania 2
@Crono1973 I deleted that because I had essentially already said that in my previous message, and it was a weirdly worded way to respond again. If you can't handle people online repeating what other people say, get off the internet. I see people repeating what other people say all the time, and I ignore it because that's just the internet. But you know what's a lot more annoying and I see a lot more of than port begging? People complaining about port begging. And jerks who go after people for saying perfectly innocuous things that don't hurt anyone.
I'm sensing some intense cabin fever from all of the nerd fighting going on in this comment section. You know you can actually go outside??
@StuartGipp I don't mind the titles as their own thing, they are solid games in their own right, same goes for Super Paper Mario, but I sure hope the series does return to its roots by the next game. Seems a little cruel to hook fans in with an original play style and then by the time they're 5 (or 6 if we count Paper Jam) entries in, to have the majority of entries in the series not play in that original play style.
@Giygas_95 I can see how a port begger would find 'people complaining about port beggers' more annoying than actual 'port beggers'.
@Crono1973 As someone who doesn't beg for ports, I will side with Giygas on this one and say that the people trying to shut down those that ask for ports often are indeed more annoying than the ones actually asking for said ports.
@duffmmann Think of it as port begging control, if no one says anything then it may be much worse.
@Crono1973 Nah, not really. I don't care if people are enthusiastic about asking for ports. It's great to see people excited. I just hate seeing others try to shut such people down for no real good reason other than the fact that such people annoy them. It's really not hard to filter through posts that don't interest you, ya know?
@duffmmann I suggest you filter through mine then.
@Crono1973 #66 wow thank you for being the port begging police, the internet is such a better place with you around harassing people!
You sure put those beggars in their place!
Have ypu guys seen this website that took this article almost word-for-word from Nintendo Life, and posted it as their own?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/gamingideology.com/2020/04/17/random-paper-mario-sticker-stars-serial-key-mystery-remains-unsolved-7-years-later/%3famp
Looking at the comments section .... i would love a port or remake of many older games. Color Splash would be awesome on Switch as it was a decent game with a very small audience.
I would also love it if a bunch of DS games could somehow be brought over (Band Brothers, Elite Beat Agents). Some Wii games would be great on Switch, too (dreaming of a rerelease of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom).
Guess I'm a beggar now, too
Ps. Sticket Star was a decent game imo.
@StuartGipp I like them... I’d still prefer more in the style of the first three, but I enjoy those two too... especially color splash.
@Crono1973 I mean I already just automatically filter in my brain, never felt a need to go out of my way and tell others what they can't talk about.
is the code the same in other languages of the game?
I agree with others who think maybe it's a Friend Code...
It's a joke, because the Shy Guy wrote down his Friend Code.
It's like an inside Dev joke 'We get it, these things are a pain in the ass'.
But just like a phone # shown in a movie, it may not be actually real...
@Crono1973 I've got to ask, are you trolling? I'm just genuinely curious, is this a character you're doing or what? I just find it somewhat difficult to believe that anybody could possibly take themself so seriously that they would unironically say something like 'think of it as port begging control'.
Either way, I suggest you find a more productive use of your time.
Unrelated note, I hope they bring TTYD to Switch!! 😍😍 Pleeeeeaaaaase Nintendo!!
Looks like a friend code ☺
@StuartGipp Well. I don't dislike sticker star but IT is the weakest game in the series imo. Color splash was a nudget in the right direction. I still love the original paper Mario the most. IT holds a special place in my heart. 😁 Hope to see paper Mario on switch this year. ❤️
@Crono1973 even I can't believe it? You know me very well do you? I believe people can talk about games they'd love to see on ANY platform they like and it's not up to you to police them on it, look at the rest of the comments here and you'll see you're in the vast minority. Talking about games you'd love to see ported just enhances the excitement of having the system, until morons come along and try to tell people what they can and can't get excited about.
