Re: Review: Pokkén Tournament DX (Switch)

RoomB31

@NPC411 How were you burned on the Wii U version of MK8? battle mode? I had the Wii U version and all the DLC and played the hell out of that game, worth every penny. The little extras on the port gives enough reason to buy it again, but it would be extremely strange for Nintendo to invest backwards, could they have done it, I guess, but they don't have to.

Re: Review: Pokkén Tournament DX (Switch)

RoomB31

If there was a promise of more characters coming to it, I'd consider it, otherwise it's price is too high for what is essentially a 5 character upgrade. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does a better job.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey's File Size is Only a Little Bigger Than an NBA 2K18 Save File

RoomB31

@Kalmaro I think it's more than compression though, it's utility of assets, it's creating an art style that never requires excessive high res textures, or overly large cinematics, extensive voice acting. Not every Nintendo game will benefit from this approach (which is why BoTW is quite big for a Nintendo developed game), but Mario games generally work with these more compact file sizes.

Re: Kirby Will Be Out Of Control When Kirby: Battle Royale Arrives On The Nintendo 3DS

RoomB31

@Henmii which is why if we see any big support from Nintendo it will be porting over those Japanese games, which is why publishers like ATLUS and NIS America become so high profile at the end of a systems life-cycle. And lets not kid ourselves, we are at the end of the 3DS's lifecycle, but how much longer we will get games remains to be seen, heck the Vita is still getting games because of Japan. So as I see it, as long as there is demand in Japan, there will be games. But large scale Nintendo games like Mario/Metroid/Pokemon/Fire Emblem are off to Switch.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Direct?

RoomB31

Nintendo really feel they have a strong winter lineup, and there's nothing wrong with that, I particularly agree. Did we need all the fluff in the Direct, not necessarily, they could have put a Nindies style sizzle reel for all the stuff we knew about already, but that wouldn't shave much time off.
The Pokemon "news" was uber disappointing since Nintendo still hasn't shown why we should care if we've already played Sun & Moon, they should have said a Pokemon direct was inbound, and that would have built more hype.
There were enough new announcements for any one Direct (Mario Party/ Kirby 3DS, Switch MOBA, DOOM/Wolfenstein) (anyone expecting more doesn't know Nintendo at all and hyped themselves up for no reason), so that was good.
Some firm release dates which is always great (Xenoblade/Skyrim), but some release dates are still absent, like Rocket League. Again if we're going to reiterate things we already know, it would be nice to cut those things short nindie reel style.
Some Right NOW surprises (ARMS update, Minecraft NN3DS, Project OT demo) are always nice.
The length of the Xenoblade segment ran a little long, but since I'm excited for the game it didn't bother me as much, but I guess it could have had (and might still) it's own direct.

Nintendo is doing a great job at hyping Odyssey!! and overall, like any other direct, it was informative with a few surprises, we can ask for more, but we will never get it, so enjoy the info they decide to share at any given moment

Re: Kirby Will Be Out Of Control When Kirby: Battle Royale Arrives On The Nintendo 3DS

RoomB31

@Henmii I'm not sure an offshoot Kirby game releasing in January is telling for 3DS's future.
Nintendo is winding down development, so don't expect any BIG games coming from Nintendo, expect medium to small, based on the games shown during the direct. I could see some localizations, but considering they showed none of them I have doubts.

All new games shown throughout the 3 directs were a New Style Boutique (Style Savvy) sequel, an eshop sequel to Dillon, a Mario Party remix and a Kirby beat-em-up, none of those are big 3DS games even if they all end up being good/great games.

I expect 3rd parties to stick around much longer, but when people mean 3DS would end this year, most really mean AAA support.

Re: Dillon's Rolling Western Is Coming Back For A Third Helping Of Armadillo-Rolling Action

RoomB31

@patbacknitro18 that most people would be peeved. This isn't just me, the Kirby game looks mildly interesting, but an offshoot Kirby game (not a mainline one) would never deserve 20 minutes of any Nintendo broadcast.
3DS were "rushed" through, because there were fewer games to show and either they were coming out soonish to immediately (Minecraft, Metroid, Mario & Luigi, Layton), will get their own Direct (Pokemon), are ports/upgrades/downgrades (FE Warriors, Minecraft, Mario & Luigi ,Yo-Kai), or are slightly more niche (Atlus titles).

The only two titles (at least in the NA direct) that could have had slightly more screen time were the Kirby and Mario Party games, however I feel the Kirby game showed the sum of its parts well enough, however I only learned after the direct that the Mario Party Top 100 will actually have game boards, something unclear during the direct). Do I think the Xenoblade and POT run-times went a little long, yes, but I also think they had a lot to show, I feel like Xenoblade could almost have its own Direct before it launches, and POT is a Square exclusive RPG that has a demo out right now that Square wants feedback on, so I think it was mostly valid use of time.

No one likes to hear that their favourite system is on the way out, I clung to my SNES for forever before boxing it up, but this is just the reality of where Nintendo is headed. If we are lucky we will have third parties like Atlus hanging around to deliver games well into 2019.

Re: Dillon's Rolling Western Is Coming Back For A Third Helping Of Armadillo-Rolling Action

RoomB31

@patbacknitro18 Do you know how long it takes to make a single game? Breath of the Wild was made with a lot of help from Monolith Soft, it wasn't just EPD doing the work. Metroid is barely in the beginning of development and Zelda has been out for 6 months so i don't know what "at the same time" means. Considering 3DS got exactly 9 minutes of showtime during the Direct, and we saw what was shown, its clear that not every 3DS team is still making 3DS games, those big ones that make the zelda's and marios etc.. have moved on the Switch, it's just logical. Every team at the end of an era moves on to new hardware, this is happening with 3DS.

Re: Dillon's Rolling Western Is Coming Back For A Third Helping Of Armadillo-Rolling Action

RoomB31

@patbacknitro18 Sure, releases will continue to happen for the 3DS but the 1st party AAA 3DS games will end this year. It's not hard to see either, the games being announced for late this year or early next year are a Mario Party compilation, a kirby brawler, a sequel to Dillon, and New Style Boutique (Style Savvy), we can expect a few more of these tier 2/3 1st party games, as well as a bunch of 3rd party games (those will be around for some time), But I wouldn't expect any big titles to hit 3DS is 2018.

Nintendo will continue its support because it wants to sell more units, but it will move all big support to Switch. It will focus on smaller titles, 3rd party titles (the entrians, harvest moons, obscure jrpg's and licensed IP, as well as some eshop only titles), And promoting it's HUGE back catalogue with Nintendo Selects & promotions.

So you are absolutely right in that Nintendo still has it's eye on 3DS, but any system seller will be put on Switch going forward.

Don't get me wrong, these games look good, and I plan on having my 3DS by my bed for some quick play sessions for some time, but nothing big will be released on 3DS post Pokemon. There are a heap of Japan only games that could buffer the west as well, but it's unclear if those will come over, (Yo-kai 3, Snack World (basically LEVEL-5).

Re: Kirby Will Be Out Of Control When Kirby: Battle Royale Arrives On The Nintendo 3DS

RoomB31

@electrolite77 While I can't speak to this game in particular, I suspect Nintendo will do some ports of 3DS games in the near future. Seeing as how much of 2018 is cloudy in terms of Nintendo Switch games (Yoshi & Kirby being the only certain 1st party games to come out next year, as Pokemon/Metroid/Fire Emblem have zero info as of yet) I'd expect to see some 3DS/Wii U ports sprinkled throughout the year, which 3DS ports? that's curious, other than this Kirby game, what would you like to see?

Re: Snipperclips Plus Launches On The Nintendo Switch On 10th November

RoomB31

love that it's getting a physical release. It's not super necessary, since the game doesn't take up much space, but it's visibility in stores will be nice, and since I didn't pick this up yet, I'll definitely pick up the physical version as long as it's not overpriced (there is no pricing on Nintendo's Canadian website, $29.99 USD converted to CAD doesn't sound so bad, but I'll wait till Nintendo of Canada announces a price)

Re: Switch Versions Of Oceanhorn And forma.8 Outsell Console Rivals

RoomB31

When the AAA are away the indies will play. This is obviously great news, but considering how mediocre OceanHorn is, this is just more telling that the visibility on these games is extremely high, so it's great for the developers for now, but this will change, see: Atooi's Chicken Wiggle. Essentially, when visibility is high, because the market is barren, you can make money without doing much marketing, even a terrible game can do well. When the marketplaces are crowded and do little marketing, well then your game does poorly.

Re: Editorial: Mandatory Memory Cards for Switch Retail Games is a Messy Solution

RoomB31

The very minor argument you make about the 3DS including an SD card is moot, because the 3DS doesn't have any onboard memory that eshop games can access (there is a minor section for DSiWare games, but that's it!). So it was very much required that Nintendo include that (originally 2gig and currently 4gig) SD card. Just like how Nintendo upped that SD card in the 3DS, I don't doubt the Switch at some point down the line will get upgraded internal memory, but given that expandable storage is a thing, it's not a necessity.

the NBA 2K18 sd requirement is a mess, and I'm sure it's a sign of things to come from major third parties (as it sets a precedent) that won't opt to have beefier Switch cards, but do this quasi half half thing.

Re: Get Ready for a Nintendo Direct on 13th September

RoomB31

If there's anything "NEW" it's going to be ports, I don't see new BIG releases being announced right now for the coming months. What I do expect is the obvious Odyssey info, maybe new Pokken characters (though I wish they wouldn't waste time on this game since it's coming out so soon), some Warriors info, a release date for Xenoblade, some more details on the Kirby & Yoshi games, & the third parties coming this fall & winter, (Sonic, La NOIRE, Skyrim, legos, Rocket league....). No indies unless its big enough to warrant time. I hope for a new announcement, but I have my doubts.

For 3DS, a short amount of time for Metroid (very very short I hope), Pokemon Ultra's + Gold/silver, Warriors maybe?, superstar saga, Layton. I see it less likely to announce new 3DS games, unless they are eshop only, but maybe the more recent ace attorney games, Snack World & Yo-kai.

Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

RoomB31

Virtual console will come. Some sort of media player/browser may or may not come, it's not the end of the world but would be silly for Nintendo to leave it out, but it's understandable that it's not a priority. There is more that I want out of the system, but I also see it as being 30 seconds old, and don't want a repeat of poor VC content like the Wii U had, I want it done right. Better online is coming ,(how much better remains to be seen). Time will reveal all that the Switch will become, but I do feel that Nintendo needs to get a move on post holiday season.

Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

RoomB31

You make your own conclusion. There are a lot of ports, sure, but this is an amazing way to play them. First party Nintendo is having a great year with releases even if there are some ports on there. There's beginning to be some good variety of titles, and the indie scene is top. 3rd party needs some work with high quality games, but their starting to creep out, with the exceptional Mario + Rabbids, to a slew of sports games. I hope there will be more from the likes of Bethesda and Now Rockstar, and who knows what will be announced next?

Re: First Impressions: Traversing Titans in Xenoblade Chronicles 2

RoomB31

@SLIGEACH_EIRE the character models look waaay better than X.
I think the discrepancy lies with its anime-esque style vs X's more "realistic" approach, but I know what you mean, some area's look sparse and bland, I do think what they showed off at Gamescom, texture-wise looked better, but performance seemed to be less smooth, we'll have to wait and see what the final build looks like, but I'm always one for performance over style.

Re: Jools Watsham Highlights Low Chicken Wiggle Sales, Confirms Upcoming Discount

RoomB31

@Kilroy No, Twitter is not the be all end all, and it's only good for direct contact, not for learning about one specific game, so if that's the main source of marketing, there should be no surprises there.

I'm not sure why you are insinuating that "millennials are cheap" jab, but it's unnecessary. It's not about whether its worth the $15, for me it doesn't present itself well, and thus I have little interest in it as a whole. Since few people have shed light on it, there is little reason to seek it out, thus poor sales.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, just one with little marketing, little coverage and little word of mouth, with that little to stand on and its mildly generic presentation, it's not hard to see why it didn't sell super well.

Re: The Plug Will Finally Be Pulled On Miiverse In November

RoomB31

I think I used it twice, although I can see the appeal (especially with art sharing, that was awesome, and the only reason I tested it out), I didn't feel the want to continuously use it. So I won't be sad to see it close, but I'm totally for a version on Switch (which will sadly never happen, and that list of things is getting long, wah wah)

Re: Video: Nintendo's Latest Switch Promo Really Crams In Reasons To Own One

RoomB31

@MariOnline Nice, I have yet to get a physical game for my Switch, not that I'm not interested in any of these games, but Zelda & Mario Kart I have/had for the Wii U (upgrading to 8 Deluxe eventually), Arms & Splatoon are intriguing but aren't calling to me right now, so Mario + Rabbids will be my first physical game for Switch and I'm psyched!!!

Re: Splatoon 2 Misses Top Spot in UK Charts But Out-Performs Predecessor

RoomB31

@SLIGEACH_EIRE One thing I've noticed about Switch Stock, is that it's completely location based.

Interest vs volume will cause some areas to basically never have any, and others to always have some, in your region that clearly seems to be the latter, in mine, the former.

So neither case is true, you seeing them doesn't make them widely available and me not seeing them doesn't make it sold out everywhere.

It is true that if older titles see a boost then some more units are clearly available, but it would also be in Nintendo's best interest to have a shipment of consoles right before a major release, so it's not completely surprising to see evergreen titles get sales boosts.
