Re: Official Nintendo Switch Technical Specifications Have Been Shared

Riff-the-Don

As a home system that's portable (or vice versa), does it really need 7.1 surround sound?
I'm sure a decent pair of headphones will give a similar effect when you're in class/on a plane/dropping deuces in your 'private office'.
Like the people from previous generations have said, Ninten-don't do specs - they make consoles for their games & as long as they play well (how many bugs have people found in true 1st party software), the system is solid without sudden unexplained disc failures & the controllers work anything else is a bonus.

Re: Video: Alex Shares His First Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch With Nintendo UK

Riff-the-Don

@DizziParadise it's nice to hear from a unbiased recent user, I wasn't fortunate enough to get a Golden Ticket but glad to hear you believe it's worth it - and your negative thoughts about aspects of the system have very valid reasoning & solutions too.

I wonder if phone users raged about their soon-to-own phones on other sites like this? Contracted or full-priced, they cost a lot more & are people genuinely happy with every aspect of them too? Yeah I'm looking at you 👁📱

I was seriously thinking of skipping out on a day one purchase due to the negatives - but why should I miss out on being able to play Zelda in public & hopefully convince the eye-ballers around me that this machine is worth it? Isn't that a better way to make sure it doesn't fail, let people see what they're missing.

ducks under the flailing arms & unattached joy-cons
Whoa! Y'all take a chill!! You got to cool that $heez off! And that's the double-truth, Ruth.

I would never regard myself as a fanboy but I have owned nearly all the Nintendo consoles/handhelds made and my feelings are:

The Switch is a true Nintendo machine, forged from all the great & good that's gone before (maybe that's why VR Boy wasn't in the DNA?), however we all know it's not as perfect as it could (should) be.
Getting at each other is NOT going to make Nintendo recall it before the launch, improve aspects of it then re-launch it!

We have what we have, I'm not impressed with some areas but if I was as unhappy with it as some people are, I would show it with my wallet - by either buying a 'rival' system or not buying a console at all!

I've never owned anything PlayStation or Xbox so I don't know all the flaws of their systems/launches etc .. but I've never heard of Nintendo having Red Rings or disc failures from systems being 'used incorrectly'. Quality costs & new tech always costs more to start, with Nintendo their products usually stand the test of time - even after years in a cupboard/loft, hence why they don't drop their prices often & old stocks of accessories sell for silly money.

I get being passionate about your feelings but for each negative comment about the Switch, do you not think it could put another person of purchasing it at launch or even at all?

On Topic finally not yet seen the video but as regular peeps as well as Alex have said the controller is comfortable, that's good enough for me. Never did get the GB micro but tried it out for an hr with no problems so I'm guessing similar size? You get 'free' joy-straps in the box & for MK8D the Switch wheels aren't expensive for 2.

Now shake hands, say your sorries or no more play dates for any of you!

Re: Super Mario Odyssey Will Be Trotting Globes On Switch This Holiday Season

Riff-the-Don

@OorWullie don't worry, I actually shed a tear too - if my lady had woken up, she would of thought I was watching a rom-com not Mario played with a Joy-Con!

I loved it, definitely brought back the feeling of MARIO 64 for me. As much as I liked Galaxy (Sunshine was a bit meh for me), this was the one that made me love Nintendo again. Looks like being another 24 hr marathon when this gets released 👍🏾

The Switch seems to be the best of all the previous consoles like they said - and on this showcase maybe Mario will be bigger than Mickey Mouse again!

Re: Uncharted And Last Of Us Designer Says Super Mario Run Is One Of His Games Of The Year

Riff-the-Don

@Equinox I've been a gamer for over 30 years, with Nintendo systems being my only consoles. With top scores in most of my games & a world record in one, I wonder how is it that I was beaten on Wii Bowling by numerous novices when there was only 1 button & extreme lack of skill from them?

Mario run is a great game for people of all skill levels, hence the 3 levels of coin collection. And all this from one input? I think Nintendo done good for a change. It 100% is a Mario game, one input to do all the moves required is certainly not just a 'casual' game.

Re: New Code Found in Unreal Engine 4 Further Reinforces Claims of Handheld / Docked Power Gap with Nintendo Switch

Riff-the-Don

@Menchi187 & @DanteSolablood

Thanks for the info, was it off-tv play streamed to the Vita from the PS3? In that case I guess the graphics took a hit.

I think that as the Switch is a dedicated HD portable console, with increased HD output for home play - surely the drop in portable play is a sacrifice to keep it within a reasonable budget & battery life setup.

Unless I missed it, there hasn't yet been a mention of online play and/or how it would work when portable? Maybe the SD slot could be for a mobile sim? Would definitely make it more appealing to be able to access the eshop on the go & battle anywhere on multiplayer games ... or am I thinking too far away from the concept of what's possible from Nintendo? 😔

Re: Super Mario Run Will Require a Constant Online Connection

Riff-the-Don

I think his words have been misunderstood/translated wrongly.

I hope that the 'online connection' will be similar to Candy Crush or any similar games that use the Internet to send lives/access other content, rather than like Pokémon Go, The Walking Dead & similar that are 'always on' & not able to be used when in a limited/no internet environment.

That may dent sales for some but as Pokémon Go is 'always on' I think it will be just fine.

Re: Gallery: Let's Take a Look at the Nintendo Switch

Riff-the-Don

At 3pm I had the look of a man that had been up since 4am, worked 8 hours & just wanted to be amazed...

3.04pm - after having several ppl walk past looking at me weirdly as I had been grinning widely (not quite bigly) I wiped a tear from my eye & took a breath ..

The Nintendo feeling I had missed since the launch of N64 and other consoles (not so much Wii U & New 3DS) was back in my heart. I have loved Nintendo since my SNES & have been a one-company fanboy/man but felt maybe the time to 'defect' to another home console was due, as it felt Nintendo was losing its touch..

The look of this console is very 'now' - I've never cared for the box look of the current generation & felt the Wii U console wasn't the best look after the consoles before.

A trimmed Wii U with the heart & soul of a 3DS is my initial feeling, with gaming anywhere the social hook to hopefully draw the masses.

Controllers that thankfully have the Home & (Share?) buttons not on the screen where they could accidentally be knocked. If the size of the screen is an indicator of the joy-con's then maybe they aren't not much smaller than the Wii U game pad controls. Also - and + at the top for volume control? No-one has mentioned sound as yet other than headphones.

Instant transfer from tablet to tv looks seamless & protects the tablet screen too.

2 Extra USB slots of left side of dock can be used to charge Switch Pro controllers.

Easy transport of games in cart form, hopefully it has a dual size slot (wide at top, narrow at bottom) so 3DS games still playable (please Tv play too!)

Is the top slot a fan or a speaker? Surround sound should be possible & better placed than base/rear speakers.

Downsides for me:

If Joy-cons are too small.
No motion controls - can't see a sensor bar unless built into screen?
Should still have gyro controls thou?
Not seen the 'right side' yet - possibly disc slot for Wii U home play?
Touch screen a given but is multi-touch included?
Price point & specs an important factor.

If Nintendo has at least the majority of the above they'll have a monster hit, with them all then we could be witnessing the second coming of the Wii/DS days for us.

Re: Random: Nintendo Censors Canadian Interview For Daring To Mention NX

Riff-the-Don

As mentioned by others, a Nintendo Direct on that who's name we shall not mention would not be the best way to reach as much of the gaming community that Nintendo want to reach - the fans already know about it, the media is aware of it but to pull back the people who may just buy it 'because it's different' need to know more.

Press releases/tv adverts/media posters are needed to make this work. I'm a long time Nintendo guy but even I'm thinking is this wait for information going to be worth it? Other consoles have set out what's next for them so can't see them stealing Nintendo's ideas & using them first.

Re: Splatoon's Last Splatfest is Next Month

Riff-the-Don

For someone that didn't like online shooters (and least face it, owning only Nintendo consoles not much chance of becoming a fan) I've had so much fan playing Splatoon & the Splatfests. Work meant I couldn't join them all but every login was at least 4-5 hrs. Will be missed but main game still what keep me coming back

Re: Nintendo NX Production Reportedly Pushed Back To 2017 To Incorporate Virtual Reality

Riff-the-Don

Having tried out both Rift & Vive I get why the industry is going gaga for vr atm - me ducking under paint trails showed me how it can be immersive to the point u lose yourself .. However let's remember why Nintendo is (was) regarded as the greatest games innovators ever. IF they do decide to go the VR route, it would only be an option in some games for the simple facts of being affordable & family-friendly.

I can't see them spending years building up a family focused user base, to then ramp the price up to exclude those that they target. Also with them being extremely aware of the dangers of kids using tech, can u really see them adding VR to everything & leaving themselves open to all the motion sickness/dizziness flak that the 3DS had? Although I'd love to see the safety manual pictures 😂

The sheer fact that everyone is speculating on what NX will/won't be for this long shows how much ppl are looking forward to it, I hope this extended hype train pulls into a station soon & we can get some real news : I've never know a product still getting coverage for so long & nothing being known solidly about it.

Whatever they make the NX to be, the hardcore Nintendies will buy it, I just hope they advertise it as well as the competition & stop relying on word of mouth to get their product out there.

Riff-the-Don

@ULTRA-64

Nah, play well & get a big square - lose & sit inches from the smaller one made it more competitive!

I don't my mother would of been too happy with me trying to lug a 32" CRT tv down two flights of stairs, across a road then up three more flights - then getting woken up at 4am by me & the police to prove its our tv 😂😂

Good times & that's what Nintendo have always been for me.

Re: Unreal Engine GoldenEye 007 Tech Demo Gains The Approval Of Game's Designer

Riff-the-Don

Goldeneye ... I remember carrying a 14" tv & my N64 across the road to my friends house for 8 player (4v4) Goldeneye sessions every Thursday - veterans on the big tv, bottom two players relegated to the mini tv lol

Off topic but relevant: exclusive games like these were what made Nintendo the reason for owning their consoles.
As unfortunately seen with Wii U, a system can't grow with just exclusive content (and great indie titles too) no matter how good, it does need the backing of major 3rd party games as these days that's what sells systems. If all the consoles had the same 3rd party games then add in their 'own console only' range, Nintendo would definitely be back in the Wii sales figure range.

I've had all the major consoles/handhelds from day one, Wii U has been the only one I've 'felt' let down by but I'm excited for NX & hopes it brings back that old feeling of Nintendo magic for this older gamer.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo is Right to Move On From the Wii Family Name With NX

Riff-the-Don

The fact I'm more excited about Nindie games than 1st party offerings atm is strange for me, I remember when Mario was more recognised than Mickey Mouse & Nintendo advertised their games a lot more. We'll never get those glory days back but I just wish Nintendo would up their promotion of their systems to get noticed to the wider world - getting Wii U mail & 3ds notifications is great but we're already on board. NX doesn't have to be 'rammed down our throats' aggressive but to reach 20M sales in a year they'll have to do more than they currently are ... I've been around since NES & I'm thinking would I buy Nintendo this next cycle already! Being burnt by price drops/cancelled games/3rd party support lives long in the mind.
Yes there are system sellers in each console/handheld series but you buy Nintendo for the 'Nintendo feel' of games - which they are there/coming soon but not enough to make the fence sitters & other console owners to buy brand Nintendo when the games they want are on their systems already.

Riff-the-Don

@ Tempestryke
I'm no healer but get me a cloak, I'll grab my staff & see if I get da feeling for some serious healing 😂

But in all seriousness, a slider would never be accurate anyways.. Surprised none of the ladies (or knowledgable men) have mentioned that no two boobs on a woman are the same size anyway! Separate sliders for left/right then full customisation for back sizes - how long do u wanna spend making an avatar??

Censorship is there & here to stay to protect the more impressionable among us - although I don't remember anyone making a noise about the faeries in Zelda & Cia in Hyrule Warriors! Oh because they're already made that way it's fine, Nintendo have sent mixed msgs in its games from back to the Snes days.
Yes they are a family friendly company 1st & foremost, but they accept that not all users are rated U hence the mature titles. However with a game such as XCX with such a similar play style to MH obviously they'll want to appeal to the masses - u can have a semi-clothed '13 y/o' but no T rated adjustments.

I'm hoping that those who have chosen not to purchase this game due to removed customisation rethink their choice - our console needs all the love it can get ❤️🕹

Re: You Can't Alter The Chest Size Of Female Characters In The Western Version Of Xenoblade Chronicles X

Riff-the-Don

@Tempestryke I don't think I've ever seen a character taking aspirin - a healing herb here, magic mushroom there perhaps - but no I've never noticed a 'back pain due to mega mammiries' problem .. Does this only occur in Dead or Alive?

I'm all for realistic character customisation but sometimes you gotta think of the kids - wow me defo turning into my parents!

Re: Talking Point: Five Key Challenges Nintendo Faces with the NX

Riff-the-Don

I guess one of the reasons why the Wii U/3DS has the architecture it has (if the ongoing updates on 3DS are anything to go by) is due to security/piracy. Nintendo has & I'm sure always will put their systems in a higher state of security to ensure their games/systems are as secure as can be .. Which judging by the hacks the other major systems have had can only be a good thing.

However in this day & age surely there's a way to have a secure system that can be easy to program for - thus allowing for ports (standard & enhanced) to be easily transferred to whatever our new system will be.

Innovation will always be a good thing but those of us that remember the older Nintendo systems will agree : games sell systems. Even with the ports Nintendo games will always be the reason people will buy Nintendo.

@ Luffymcduck

It's a tricky puzzle, the letters you pass just before the trap become more important the more times u go the trap & run away ...

Bit gutted about this, as it was one of the few nindies@home I actually enjoyed. Sure it will be worth the wait.

Re: Poll: Is Pokkén Tournament The Wii U Release You've Been Waiting For?

Riff-the-Don

As an older gamer who enjoyed Stadium (and to a lesser degree Colosseum), I wished the full combat of Pokemon would arrive on a Nintendo system. Now that it has I'm defo on board for getting this & promoting this to fellow fellow Nintendo fans .. This could be the game that will even draw me back into the 3DS versions that thus far I have avoided - they ate my life!

The new Splatoon? One to watch methinks.
