FAST Racing NEO is fast, we've certainly established that, but lurking in the game's menus is another mode that takes the speed to further levels of ridiculousness.
Hero Mode bring in new rules and mechanics that aren't found in the rest of the game, so rather than just trying to get around and rank as high as you can, these changes come into effect: every race is Hypersonic, you must finish first, all tracks are mirrored, and your boost meter also becomes a shield meter.
This means that should you knock about too much or boost without caution so that the meter is depleted, or should you crash into the scenery, or even just fall off the edge of the course, you'll have to start all over again.
You can see the mode in action in the video below, just don't blame us for any weeping that may occur once you try the mode for yourself.

Looks way better than project cars that's for sure😂
Sounds awesome. I can't wait to try it. Too bad hero mode is offline only though...
That last race was ridiculously fast to the point where I got dizzy and started shaking my head so I could re-focus on what I was looking at. This makes Mario Kart 8's 200cc look like a joke.
My eyes!!!
The supah sanic speed!!
I love this.
That. Speed. Is. Insane. Those are some pretty impressive driving skills there, @AlexOlney.
Is this the only mode where tracks are mirrored, or is there a "Mirror Mode" akin to Mario Kart?
The gameplay looks pretty fun to me!
I still don't like the music tho and the announcer's voice sounds weak. If they had collaborated with Nintendo, they could have given this game more character and atmosphere.
HARD! I like it!
Fast/Wii was already impressive and fast, but this gets so fast it's lapping its predecessor! Shin'en outdid themselves.
Why is the video only 144p? Does anyone get a more higher resolution video in your viewer?
@sandman89 lol. Agreed. Project Bores more like it. This game looks amazing.
These guys really know how to pick some simple, striking, visuals components and make the most of them.
I hope this Hero mode gets added to the online multiplayer. Like some sort of survival mode. Last man standing wins the race. It doesn't hurt to dream a little. At least two modes including this Hero mode, should be on the online component of the game. We'll see.
@sandman89 And more engaging. Project Cars would've been a nice addition to Nintendo. Specially with the gamepad feature as the wheel. But "FRN" should do just fine and for only 15 bucks?? you can't go wrong. Lets see how's the replay value in the coming months and how it lasts.
I'm not an F-Zero guy really but this game looks truly outstanding for 15 dollars and i feel like i really should pick it up. I like that it looks to be easier than F-Zero GX/AX as that game looked and played amazing but was crazy hard.
I also like that it's still offering people the original F-Zero challenge in Hero mode.
Long time lurker / reader of this board and I had to register just now so I could chime in on this game. I am SO excited. The first game on the Wii though was really hard and I was never able to unlock most of it. This is my favorite genre, and I was so disappointed there's been no F Zero sequel for the Wii or Wii U. I wound up buying a used PS3 two years ago just to play Wipeout and have access to more racing games. I'm a racing game fanatic, mostly arcade and futuristic, but I like sims too. Seriously though, I really hope this game isn't too hard... I <3 video games, racing games, but I don't know if it's cuz im old or just brain damaged, but I really suck at them. (i'm great at all the Mario Karts though! haha).
Definite day one purchase for me and I do wish there was a physical release, but I am slowly warming up to digital downloads.. Bitter pill to swallow. I've been collecting games for a long time and have every major system with a nice collection of games for each (usually bought on the cheap when the generation is over). Lately i've been having these moments though of thinking, ugh, seriously, remember all those porno DVD's and VHS's you bought back in the day!? The same is gonna be true for video games! Tell me im wrong, i'd like that hear that
Video games looks great on shelves though, pornos not so much, so i guess there's that. Can't wait to play this!
I... I don't know why but this almost looks TOO fast for me. GX Master Class Diamond already defeated me in my prime, so I have no idea how I'm going to handle THIS.
@BigBabyPeach I'm pretty sure they actually got the announcer from F-Zero
Brutal old school F-Zero style.
I dislike the fact that the tracks are mirrored
F zero gx at least only required you to get first in missions. The grand prix only required first in ranking.
I really hope that they include the first person view from gx! Playing fzero in first person was amazing!
Did we get the largest AND the fastest games ever this December?!
Hah, 5:53 in the video: "Please GOOOOOOOO!"
@RobNYC1977 Welcome aboard, matey!
My adrenaline starts kicking in seeing thuis vid. Can't wait to play it!
@Giygas_95 I'm glad someone noticed the happy accident in editing!
@khaosklub 1st person on gx WAS INSANE!! Me and my mates used that as a drinking game. Try playing it stood up whilst drinking
This game especially this mode would work so well in an arcade with local multiplayer.
Sigh.. another aggravating and insanely frustrating game mode added for god only knows what reason.. masochistic gamers who enjoy obnoxiously difficult things that are designed to make you fail and only succeed if you dedicate your life to learning the game more than the developers.. who has the time or patience for this sh*t?
@ActRaiser people who are better at games than you?
I had Wipeout twitchy fingers just watching that video, a defo addition to my front page Wii U home screen!
@zackreed This must be the announcer from Sega's GX then? I would prefer F-Zero X's announcer who sounds like some sort of robot mutant wrestler on steroids - this guy sounds wimpy in comparison. And apparently Nintendo agrees with me since they put his voice in Mario Kart 8/Big Blue.
@ActRaiser Some people like challenge, unlike you.
I enjoy a challenge.. but I also have things to do other than sit around in my underpants playing videogames all day.. repeating the same stages over and over like some kind of brain dead chimpanzee with OCD.
@ActRaiser Yeah, how dare people have different preferences in video games, am I right?
I don't really understand your beef with there being a challenge mode in a game, considering that there are plenty of games made for those of lower skill levels. Even FAST Racing NEO has lower speeds available to choose from. Why are you angry that people like different things than you?
@AlexOlney Yep, it really cracked me up the first time!
I have no problem admitting I suck bad at most games and don't expect things handed on a golden platter, but when it comes to racing games i'll admit my butthurt when I'm only able to experience a few of the tracks. The first racing neo game was like that for me, but I think it was cheap so no harm no foul and it's great for people who like a challenge, but I was raised on Game Genie back in the day and miss codes and stuff.
Has anyone here unlocked the AX arcade cup in Fzero for GCN? It's insanely impossible. I want to play those tracks SO bad. I think there's a way to unlock it but only with some old version of an action replay which are like 100 dollars on amazon grrr. tempted sometimes though.
I think nintendo could utilize indy developers like this so well. Literally if nintendo gave them the contract and resources they could make a fantastic fzero for launch on NX. It's not like Sega are going to bother making another one anytime soon.
Why does your vehicle only get the traffic lights drone things though? Only a small thing but that will bug me. I'll have to devise an elaborate back story to explain why this is so, otherwise the game's universe is already broken.
This game looks ridiculous. I'll be keeping an eye on reviews for this and Steamworld Heist.
Is this speed... legal?!?
@RobNYC1977 It is indeed only possible either by hard work and finishing all the cups or by way of an Action Replay: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/03/f_zero_ax_found_hidden_in_gamecube_f_zero_gx
Although there is possibly a third option: still got a Wii? Softmod that and install Nintendont to unlock native GameCube compatibility and then look online for a copy of F-Zero AX Triforce Arcade, it's a disc image made compatible with GameCubes and/or Wii's that are modded. It also works on Wii U by softmodding it in the same way when in Wii mode.
Or you could just find and download the game and install the Dolphin emulator on your PC to play it on that...
