The newest instalment in the Mario franchise was revealed at today's Nintendo Switch presentation.
Super Mario Odyssey is Mario's latest sandbox style game, exclusively on the Switch.
Mario will travel and visit cities, jungles, castles, and various unique worlds. The worlds will be a sandbox style, incorporating a mix of real and imaginative lands. Additionally, Mario's red hat features a new character who can be used to help create platforms to provide new platforming opportunities.

Super Mario Odyssey launches this holiday season, with more details to be shown in the coming months.

man, Mario is in the city hell yeah!!!
I'm getting really good vibes from the trailer, but the real world setting makes me think of Sonic Adventure and scares me a bit.
so its kinda like mario is missing meets minish cap?
Is it just me or does the presentation going great so far. This game looks just so perfect it a shame i can't play until the winter
Mario's totally going to fall in love with a furry princess.
This is the only game that peaked my interest to be honest.
@thesilverbrick And both were pretty good games. But this is Nintendo and their most iconic character. I trust they'll create a great experience. I just wish it were a launch title
Is this a Jojo reference?
This is the most interesting thing Nintendo has done with Mario since Super Mario Galaxy...glad to see Nintendo stepping it up with the Switch!
I really was expecting more games.. so for launch only two games?
@UmbreonsPapa They we're both pretty good games... for Sonic titles. They always struck me as super cheesy, though.
All in all, I'm still very hopeful. But Mario in a real-world setting looks so broken. I'm sure will be fine, though.
Definitely want this game. And I was kind of hoping Mario will regain his punches and kicks from 64...oh well, I guess that ain't happening
I'm actually kinda disappointed this isn't a launch title. I'm relieved Zelda is...it's about time they get that game out. But this...this needed to be there too. Now I need to think really hard about whether I want to buy the console or wait. Because I seriously feel that my decision hinged on Mario.
That being said, the game does look incredible.
I feel like Mario should have always had a hat that he can use as a aerial trampoline. It seems like such a natural addition to the character. Very impressed with this new mechanic.
This looked really great. Many have been calling for a return to Mario 64 style stages and this is clearly an attempt at that.
Really hoping they hit the Holiday launch. Mario and Zelda in the same year would be a big, big deal.
I CANNOT wait to play this game. Getting really good vibes from the trailer. Though Mario looks weird a bit in the real world
looks beautiful, fun and more like galaxy than 3D world, which i'm thrilled about. was not a fan of the forced perspectives but loved how original the worlds were
Would have preferred it as a launch title. But that was what I have been waiting for in a Mario game for awhile.
Here I thought mario was running out of ideas. But Nintendo once again proves me wrong
I am pleased. I do admit that I truly miss the mushroom kingdom though...
This is going to be great! A return to the 64/sunshine era!
I love how they're going back to how a 3d Mario platformer should be made, not the linear stuff they've been doing recently
Looks extremely charming, totally picking it up when I can. I hope it will come in a bundle with red version of the console. Retailer here finally settled on the 300usd including tax/vat so I don't have to buy it overseas which is great.
That's my game bundled with switch
I booked this title on my shppping list.
I will get it on December 2017.
Btw, we still don't see the official box art and cartridge size. Maybe on Treehouse event...
This nearly brought a tear to my eye then that Zelda trailer at the end actually did. Spectacular. The negativity in thr comments was ridiculous. Arms looks great, Splatoon 2, Mario odyssey, Fire emblem warriors. Xenoblade 2, some fantastic looking rpgs, Zelda in 7 weeks. It was fantastic!
I loved Sonic Adventure, loved Super Mario Galaxy, loved Michael Jackson's MoonWalker, (throwing the hat?!), no doubt I'll love this game!
This game looks good, a hub with lots of different sandbox areas. This might be awesome with new mechanics. Think it was a mistake to show the levels with deliberately angular graphics (fruit level). I know someone will try to say that's all the Switch can do.
Super Mario Odyssey - My God, it's full of stars! (that you must collect.)
@Solid_Stannis Not that there's anything wrong with that
Should have been a launch title
I'm excited by it being open like 64, but am really worried about how freaky having normal people in a mario game is. That alone could make the game unplayable because of it's stupidity.
@UK-Nintendo
You said Swirch, not Switch. XD
I'm getting a Mario Sunshine vibe from this. I like it a lot.
Looked interesting, what I saw of it. But, my internet started acting up, so I'll have to catch the trailer later.
@thesilverbrick Maybe Mario finally made it to Brooklyn, either that or maybe the Mushroom Kingdom went urban like how it was depict in Mario Kart 8, you know the city under Rainbow Road.
I've never really been that interested in Mario games.
But I'll probably get this. I like the open world design.
@Dangerous25
Yeah that Bowser Moonwalker in the video was awesome!
And THIS is one of the beauties that sold the system to me.
This really caught me off guard,I did not expect it to be like this. Then the confirmation it will be a giant world like 64 and Sunshine had me cheering out loud.
Looks Beautiful and incredibly fun, can't wait!
Best part of the game is gonna be Pimp Bowser
Gonna get the system, eventually, for this. Nintendo's thinking of my wallet, not making this a launch title.
@PuzzleMaster7: Many thanks for that! My internet conked out on me during this segment of the presentation.
This looks really good.
@retro_player_22 Mario in Brooklyn reminds me of the horrid Super Mario Bros. movie. Suddenly Sonic Adventure doesn't sound so bad.
This should've been launch.
Really wanna see another video showing power ups
Nothing on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe???
@thesilverbrick It doesn't remind you of the awesome Saturday morning cartoons? Selective memory much?
@thesilverbrick The real world setting makes me think of Sonic Adventure and excites me a little bit. But I can see why it could be a concern.
What doesn't excite me is the hat companion. Unless that's actually Starlow in there, I'd rather have an established Mario character accompany Mario than yet another underdeveloped floating object.
@thesilverbrick Mario has already starred in a game taking place in Brooklyn (called the Big-City) though, it's called Donkey Kong 94 for the Game Boy and it plays just as good.
Man that looks awesome. I didn't think Super Mario 3D World was quite in the same class as the Galaxy games (then again, how many games actually are as good as Mario Galaxy 1 and 2?) but it was still platforming excellence. This looks like Super Mario 3D World on steroids, definitely a potential system-seller to me this holiday if MS doesn't hit a home run with Project Scorpio.
I'm in the "This was what interested me most" category.
I'm still bitter about Wii U being dropped. So, Switch isn't something I'm looking forward to.
It's just the games. Well, some of them.
This is so weird and so awesome!
@Pichuka97 I noticed that, too! All of the people are in the 5-foot-something range and here is this wide-eyed midget jumping and climbing on buildings! I can hear it in my head in a New York-styled accent in my head, "Hey Vinnie. Some midget is jumping on buildings!" "Are you serious? Get outta heah!"
Looks great. I enjoyed 3D World, but I'm glad Nintendo's finally making another open world Mario game.
Finally it looks like we will finally seeing a return to the sandbox style gameplay of Super Mario 64! I have been waiting for this for far too long.
Love it!
You had me at Oddjob hat.
It looks incredible, can't wait
Did anyone notice all the signs and billboards in the first shot? New donk city. Dixie st. Diddy's mart. I wonder if some donkey kong characters are making an apearance.
I am Mario comin' to NYC.
I am Mario comin' to NYC.
I am Mario comin' to NYC.
To NYC, To NYC.
(Super Samurai - Jun Karashima)
Needs more LUIGI.
The game looks like it has a lot of really clever ideas. I'm willing to give a new sandbox Mario game a try.
The one thing is that it isn't a good sign when the first 10 seconds of the trailer make me think "Sonic Adventure 3? But the first two weren't really that good..."
I'm waiting for the M rated prequel, Super Mario Iliad. "Sing, O Muse, the wrath of Super Mario"
Game of the night IMO.
Can't wait for Andre@GamExplain to sink his teeth into this one.
WANT.
Wow, this looks really good.
Mario in a real world setting?!? I am not a fan.
I didn't like this part at all in Sonic Adventure, although the game was quite ok.
I do not think Mario and Sonic belongs in a real world setting, and those levels looked boring and bland, as the real world do.
The game will surely be super fantastic, and other parts looked more like a Mario World. But in general, I didn't like this new direction, and I am missing some Mushroom Kingdom Vibe.
Sure this will play well and has some interesting ideas but not sure I like Mario jumping around between typical styled levels/areas to ones which are trying to be more realistic. Although I will get it and no doubt love the gamplay for some reason it reminded me of Sonic 06 as that tried to put a cartoon character in a more real looking world
@OorWullie don't worry, I actually shed a tear too - if my lady had woken up, she would of thought I was watching a rom-com not Mario played with a Joy-Con!
I loved it, definitely brought back the feeling of MARIO 64 for me. As much as I liked Galaxy (Sunshine was a bit meh for me), this was the one that made me love Nintendo again. Looks like being another 24 hr marathon when this gets released 👍🏾
The Switch seems to be the best of all the previous consoles like they said - and on this showcase maybe Mario will be bigger than Mickey Mouse again!
I liked 3D World, but it lacked the sole Galaxy had. Glad to see it back in this.
Finally a location that isn't some variation of generic plains/desert/fire world etc. 3D World got kinda close with some of those circus levels... But really we haven't had anything interesting since Galaxy.
I've wanted to see an open world Mario platformer that's set in a real-ish environment (that doesn't sacrifice its roots) for quite some time and to sweeten the deal, we can take it on the go. =D
Fantastic, fantastic news.
This game looks amazing! I want it!
Looks incredible. Gonna buy a Switch just for this.
And to the people saying the game is going to be "literally unplayable" because ONE level has realistic looking people in it; lol. Stop.
"New Donk City" is the name of the City.
"Dixie St." ... and "Diddy's Mart".
A lot of Donkey Kong references in that city!
@CapeSmash
You are overreacting. I think no one said it would be unplayable. Quite the opposite, actually.
But you do not need to be a fan of the "Real World" setting. I don't like it, but the game will probably be great anyway.
Why does it look worse than 3D World? This game looks ugly AF. Oh boy is this console failing hard.
This would look so great on a PS4. Nintendo, please, drop the hardware it is not your thing anymore!!!
I've had an idea about a Mario game in a city setting for a couple of years now. It's not like this, but it's cool to get an idea of what it would look like to see him in a city setting. I was really surprised and delighted by the trailer.
@Al_Godoy
Seriously ? 3D World doesn't even looks like Mario Oddysey. Super Mario Oddysey looks like Mario 64 / Sunshine. Awesome !
Mario is going back to open world, N64 style! Game of the presentation in my opinion!
The SEGA guy had nothing to show, because they have been working on the level design of the new Mario game
Nintendo didn't have the time, so they asked SEGA to recycle some of the levels from Sonic adventure and Sonic 06 for Mario
I am a big fan of Galaxy and 3D World. Not so much of Sunshine. This looks worse than sunshine, but still, it's Mario 3D, and will probably be allright.
@#%$ yeah! I've always loved open worlds, they're so interesting to explore! And it's nice to see some traditional Mario levels too!
So far, this game is looking brilliant. If I get a Switch, I'll be sure to pick this game up.
That Sega dude was funny. They light up the stage, and dude walks up says he's working on something. I get it, but I'm surprised they didn't show anything at all. Must be something good.
I feel like Switch predictions are far from over.
That city loos so much like the pre-rendered Station Square in Sonic Adventure's opening.
Why.
This should of been launch title.
No Mario bundle at launch. 😥
Looks pretty good, looks like there will be a big emphasis on hats considering beyond the standard enemies every character is wearing one and Mario flies around in a giant top hat. I can't wait for the game, but I trust it will be worth the wait.
@UK-Nintendo Better for it to release when it's ready than be rushed out and ruin the series reputation.
@Al_Godoy Get over it it's not releasing on PS4.
I will say that this game looks really beautiful... and I will be playing it once it's out. ^_^ but, Mario in a realistic environment just feels a bit weird to me... especially next to other human characters. I thought Mario 3D World got the style right with Mario in HD personally. But hey, what we have here is amazing. I hope it's fun!
No coins?
@Randomlight
I haven't seen any Coins or any Pipes at all... Is this a Mario Game at all?
The city is strange looking but beyond that it looks really interesting and fun.
@thesilverbrick Weird... I just commented on how I was going to say the same thing as you over in the Xenoblade 2 thing, and after watching this video I searched the comments to see if anyone else was reminded of Sonic Adventure. I guess this time around, though, it wasn't just the two of us.
Also, for the record I LOVED the first Sonic Adventure. I kind of don't know how that affects my feelings towards this trailer, though.
Can't say I love seeing Mario in a realistic world. It doesn't look right to me. I think Super Mario 3D World absolutely nailed the look and style of a modern 3D HD Mario game. Here it looks like he's accidently fallen into Generic Xbox 360 Game No.3859. It looks like it's trying too hard, like someone at Nintendo was like "gritty urban sandbox games are what the western kids are into now, let's make Mario that." I know Mario has appeared in realistic settings before, but it just looks weird. Even the overly-realistic stitching on his dungarees irks me. I'm just too much of a purist for my own good... At least some of the worlds in the video look like they're from a Mario game.
Looks wonderful! I definitively know my Christmas gift this year!
And a return to form, based on SM64 and SMS mehcanics.... Definitively has GOTY potential, just like Zelda!
@NickOfTime90 The first thing I noticed was Dixie St and thought we were getting another Donkey Kong game
D-d-did you say SANDBOX?!? Like Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine?
After all those years, I guess I will go back to the Mario frachise with a big smile in my face.
Bliss!!!
Could be the greatest Mario ever. Almost makes me want Mario traveling through warps to OTHER NINTENDO GAME WORLDS..... (maybe this is it?)
Should've been a launch game but dam it looks awesome.
Hmmm....... Not sure about this... I will miss the Mushroom Kingdom.
The music in that trailer gives me goosebumps, it's so good. The game looks amazing as well. Couldn't be more hyped!
my favorite
If we own a Switch, then we will own this game. That's it.
Reminds me of when Homer Simpson enters the real world.
I am so getting this game. It has been a long time since we've had a Mario game like this.
So essentially this is more open world than Mario 64? I think I'm gonna love this game.
@BlueNitrous or is that swiching it up XD
@UmbreonsPapa me too
