Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Has Embraced DLC, But Must Resist The Worst Industry Norms

Refurin

Being a family of gamers with four 3DSes and four Switches, my biggest problem with DLC is the fact that it can't be shared the same way a game card can. So while we may be able to get away with buying a $60 Breath of the Wild once, that isn't the case with the Season Pass since it's tied to the profile, not the cartridge. Instead of getting used to/learning to accept DLC, the more time that passes with DLC being part of the video game market, the less I like it. So I hate myself every time I buy any of it, such as the recent Season Pass for Fire Emblem Warriors.

Re: Review: DOOM (Switch)

Is local multiplayer an option or is this going to be strictly online? I've already got three copies of Splatoon 2 to play with my family. I don't plan to repeat that to play Doom with my wife.

Re: Poll: A Retro Quest - Were You Able to Buy a Super NES Classic Edition / SNES Mini?

Refurin

Was able to get one at Target for myself, one at Best Buy for one friend and one at TRU for another friend. No pre-orders, no midnight line up, just going around opening. Each of those stores got about 80 units. I was not a fan of the guy in line with me who was buying his 6th and bragging about scalping every one of them to take advantage of the people who would pay out the nose to get them as Xmas gifts.

Re: Review: Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)

Mine came in last night and it really is so so so very good. I can not over-emphasize how much you need to play this game with good headphones on. The soundtrack really helps pull you in to the atmosphere/setting.

Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

Refurin

@Anti-Matter
What brought me back to Nintendo was primarily the ability to play games with my kids. Growing up being able to play games on the same couch with my friends, I really dislike the modern trend towards online-only multiplayer. I didn't really take much note of it before the kids because I was just gaming for myself. But then when they came along, I had all these games that would have been so fun to play with my kids but they were all only online. Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario 3D world, etc etc... there are so many games that I can play on one TV and have that experience that I did in the late 80s/ early 90s. Splatoon is the only one we can't all do on one system, but at least with the Switches we can sit around playing together in one room.

Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

Breath of the Wild ALONE made the system worth buying. Add in Mario Kart and the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors and I know that by the end of the year I'll have spent enough hours with it that I'll feel I've already gotten my money's worth out of the system.

I was raised on NES/SNES/GB. I moved over to PSX and then the X-Boxes in High School / College. I missed out on the whole N64/Gamecube/Wii/DS period. It was the 3DS and Wii-U that brought me back to Nintendo and I'm glad to be with the Switch from the get-go. I traded my Xbox One in for a Switch for my daughter (we're up to four Switches; mine, my wife's, my daughter's, and my son's) and I don't miss having it at all.

Re: Sonic Forces Hits Japan On November 9th

Refurin

Just downloaded Sonic Mania last night and already I regret it. To be fair, I shouldn't be surprised since that is always my response to Sonic games. They LOOK incredibly fun but once you start playing it's just periods of occasionally interacting with the poorly done platforming that interrupts the forward motion of the game. Or maybe it's the forward momentum parts that interrupt the poorly done platforming sections. I'm really not sure. It's fun-ish, as Sonic games tend to be, but they always make me want to play a better game (a Mario or a Mega-Man).

Re: Review: Implosion (Switch eShop)

Refurin

For $12, this game has been pretty fun. I've more or less left off downloading games (I'd much prefer sticking to physical) but this is one of those rare instances where I didn't regret the purchase.

My wife and I are loving the series and can not wait for more. While I kind of wish the language and gore wasn't so extreme, it by no means is turning me off the show. It does make me wish we could have an anime for Lords of Shadow. That was hands down one of the best video game stories I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I've genuinely never understood the hate it gets (even if LoS2 was a major let down).

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo at E3 2017?

Refurin

Samus returns and Fire Emblem Warriors were the only games to get me really excited. I genuinely liked what Nintendo showed, I just didn't feel that they revealed enough. Still, I'm happier with their reveals than any of the news to come out of the other gaming companies.

Re: Video: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Season Pass Gets Its Own Trailer

Refurin

I'm conflicted on the season pass. I want to play all the maps/dungeons/stories. Give it to me now. Bwahaha etc. If this was a home console game on the Wii-U or Switch I'd drop money on the Season pass in an instant. I find myself more hesitant due to it being on the 3DS.

The difference is that while my children and I each have our own personal 3DS, the home consoles are the family consoles. We just have one that we all share so DLC purchased for a game is accessible to all of us. When it comes to the 3DS systems, we tend to just get one cartridge and share it between systems since the kiddos like to try my games. I'd happily have paid $45 for a second cartridge with all this stuff on it to share with the kids, but having it tied to one system/account means I'd have to either buy it multiple times, let them play on my system, or tell them "sorry no DLC for you".

On a slightly unrelated note, when we got Mario Maker 3DS my daughter started playing it on her 3DS. When it was my turn to play it, the game tells me it can only have save data attached to one account. It absolutely refused to open up the game on my system unless I deleted my daughter's progress. I wish there was some better way for Nintendo to handle the accounts and data for 3DS systems in the case of families with multiple hand-helds.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of the New Nintendo 2DS XL?

Refurin

I absolutely love the 3DS. Even now that I have the Switch, it remains my favorite system. That said, I don't like the whole 3D thing and always turn it off. So given the right LE version, and provided there are still plenty of great new games to be added to the library, I'd buy a N2DSXL.

Re: Evergreen Nintendo Switch Titles Stay in UK Charts as Yooka-Laylee Makes a Mark

Refurin

I couldn't get past the intro for Yooka Laylee. The sound effect voices for the characters made me want to put my controller through my TV. My fond memories of Rare titles were all on the SNES with DK Country and Killer Instinct, so having never played Banjo Kazooie I guess I had no pre-attachment to this style of game. But man, I found it god awful annoying. So much so that it was unplayable to me.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

Refurin

I haven't touched it in months. Pokemon Go was a weird beast. It wants me to play a game, but it also wants me to go outside and explore. I feel like it defeats the purpose of both of those activities.
A real game I can experience regardless of where I turn it on, Pokemon Go I can't play unless there are Pokemon or stops around.
Going outside and exploring can be nice and enjoyable, but what is the point if my face is in my phone the whole time trying to catch or battle whatever?
I tried to support Nintendo's mobile gaming experiment with Pokemon Go, Fire Emblem, and Mario; but honestly, I recently deleted all the gaming apps from my phone. The mobile gaming industry is all throw away software that tries to make money in the moment before people without attention spans move on to the next thing. I'll stick with my dedicated gaming systems.

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

Refurin

The selection is a bit bare bones, but that doesn't bother me right now simply because no matter what other games I have available to play (I've got "I am Setsuna" "Super Bomberman R" and "Blaster Master Zero"), I end up just playing more Zelda. I absolutely adore the 3DS but the Switch is my new favorite system just on the merits of its versatility. I would like to see Streetpass brought over to it along with Virtual Console and such. Yes I see room for improvement but it's already pretty great.

Re: USPS Recovers Lost Package Containing $10,000 in Rare SNES Cartridges

Refurin

My sister sent my kids some holiday gifts one year, insured the package and everything. When the package arrived it had clearly been opened and the contents switched. It took something like 2 months for the postal service to just tell her that she wasn't getting back a cent. What is the point of paying for insurance?!

Re: Video: Watch Ganondorf Wield His Devilish Trident in Hyrule Warriors Legends

@TheHeroOfTime333
My wife loves the game but rarely finds time to play the wii-u. She's been dying for this game for ages so she can play it on her break at work or in the car waiting for our daughter to finish dance class. Can't tell you how many times I've heard "hey when does Hyrule Warriors come out for the 3DS again?" Absolutely worth the $40. Now if Nintendo could just put out Splatoon for the 3DS she would be one very happy camper.

Re: Reminder: US Pokémon Fans Can Still Pre-Order the New Nintendo 3DS Gen 1 Bundle

Refurin

So close to pre-ordering this for my daughter, but I still can't understand why it has both pre-installed. If it had come with download codes instead, you could download one game and give the other to a friend/family member so you could trade. Instead you'll just have two games on your console that won't be able to trade between one another. Makes no sense to me. I'm hoping they announce a Pokemon Z this year and release a New special 3DS bundle that I can pick up for my daughter instead.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy Explorers (3DS)

Refurin

After playing for... a few hours... I'm definitely going to agree with the sentiment that solo play is getting boring (and I haven't even repeated any quests). Stat improvements seem to all be based on your class and your equipment, so anyone looking to level up, nope, not in this game. Not being big on online multiplayer stuff, I think I'll probably be letting my copy go.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy Explorers (3DS)

Refurin

My question is do you obtain exp and levels like a traditional Final Fantasy or is the gear crafting the only way to increase stats? I initially loathed Monster Hunter, but got into it once I figured out how to properly play it, but even then it wasn't more than just good. I'm ok with repetitive questing, but with Monster Hunter you need to keep redoing quests in the hopes that a rare material will drop so you can craft new equipment so you can be slightly tougher to kill when you go up against the next monster mission so you start the whole cycle over. If I'd been able to level up by killing monsters so that my HP and such went up that may not have sucked so much.

So yeah, EXP in this game or no?
