We suspect most Monster Hunter players will, at some point, have had a tiny bit of sympathy for the beasts they're slaying. In some cases the monsters are simply minding their own business, and all of a sudden you roll in and swing a giant sword into their face.
Monster Hunter Stories seems like a lovely antidote to that. You team up with cute variations of monsters and engage in turn-based battles, and as the name makes clear story-telling will be key; no doubt going beyond the limited tales shared in the main series games.
With an October release in Japan creeping ever closer the game's getting a big push in the country, and we thought the latest trailer was simply too good to ignore. It showcases the diversity of characters and some visuals that truly make the best of the 3DS. Check it out below.
Sadly there's still no indication of this one coming to the West, but we've not lost hope yet. If Monster Hunter Generations is having a solid run in the West it's possible Capcom could consider a 2017 localisation; we shall see in good time.

This looks insanely good. Can you guys like do one of your polls and hand them the results, or something like that? Maybe help push them in the right direction?
I've never managed to get into the MH games despite several attempts, although I can absolutely see what people love about it. MH Stories looks great though, so I'll probably end up giving it a shot
This is not Pokemon
@Raylax Me neither, I tried really hard last year with MH4U.
But, this year With MH-G it finally clicked and I am having a blast with the game. Even did some low level Online multiplayer Monster hunts and it was great!
I also think it really depends which weapon you start out with.
So you might want to look into that, as if you start out with the wrong weapon, then the game will be ruthless difficult to you and put you off the game.
I myself, I am still playing it safe with the Sword+Shield weapon and really enjoy it.
I have tried a bit with the hunting bow (to get materials only obtainable by poisioning Creatures hehe) and the Great Sword.
The Great Sword is quite challenging, as it's incredibly slow and as newbie very easy to keep missing the target, which can cause immense frustration if you chosen this as your first weapon.
After a lot of trial&error and persistence I finally and slowly getting the hang of it.
@Jeronan Yeah, I've had a few different stabs at it over the years with various weapons - Sword & Shield, Great Sword, Hammer, Lance, Switch Axe, Bow Gun, Dual Swords, etc. It's just never quite clicked with me, the furthest I've got with one is defeating Lagiacrus in MH3U, but I was getting tired of it by that point and stopped playing soon after.
A lot of my friends are hugely into the multiplayer, which again I can totally see the appeal of, but it requires a big time investment that I don't really have these days haha. I'd be able to play maybe 2 hours a day if I played literally nothing else and abandoned my other hobbies, whilst they regularly rack up 5+ (ah, to be a student again!).
Playing multiplayer "at my own pace" would mean playing with strangers online, which I've never really enjoyed doing in any game haha.
But yeah, I absolutely get why people love it. Personally though I don't find the gameplay loop particularly engaging for me and I don't have the time to invest in the multiplayer.
@Tsurii This game looks absolutely Incredible for a 3DS game, though we don't know how it will actually "really" look like on the 3DS.
It would be a crime if this game doesn't come to the west.
But since it won't be before 2017, who knows CapCom will suprise us with a release on the NX (if the rumor of it being a Handheld foremost end up being true).
On the other hand, Yo-Kai watch is also a suprisingly good looking game on the 3DS. Looks much better than the last Pokemon games, which still dissapoint me and the upcoming Pokemon doesn't apppear to look any better.
I feel like Gamefreak is being very lazy on that department and always has been. Their optimization really does suck and despite the very low minimal Graphics, they still cannot provide lagfree Pokemon Battles.
Level5 and CapCom manage to get far more out of the 3DS. It's Incredible how well optimized their games are.
Holy crap I want this game😍. Definately the sexiest game on the 3DS. I also wouldn't mind a main series title using this art style.
Isn't the resolution on display here still too high for being 3DS footage?
Maybe the game is coming out on NX too, like @Jeronan says.
@Pod Exactly! That kind of resolution is impossible to be Direct 3DS footage.
Yo-kai watch has been praised by really high Production value and looks gorgeous with very little aliasing, but it's still visible up close.
@Tsurii Well, of course Agna's in. How else are we gonna swim in lava?
Personally I'm happy to see Nerscylla in the seemingly limited selection of 4th gens.
It also seems the hunter arts from Generations will be here as well. Great Sword seems to have both Brimstone Charge and Lion's Maw.
Is it just me, or does that look a bit like Litten in the beginning?.....
@Tops
Took them like 3 years to localize DQ7
I really want to play this game it looks amazing.
Looking better and better.
And yet no sign of it coming to the west...
-_-'
The graphic looks very nice. I'm glad it rated CERO A for Japan version, that's mean less strong violence against the monster.
BTW, should we steal the egg in order to finish the game ? Because when i saw the latest trailer, there was a mission to 'STEAL' a Monster egg. And i felt discomfort to do that, even in game.
...Now the series is getting voice acting?...lol
Oh, i forgot. What language are they used for that trailer ? Sounds like gibberish or Simlish language... XD
(Olala... The Sims language much ?)
I will be very surprised if this is not localized. In general this generation has been very good for localizations on all platforms.
Looks just as great as E.X. Troopers.
Seriously, chibi or not, why couldn't Level 5 or Nintendo or whoever is making that FedFo turd make the game cel shaded at least?
@Jeronan Sun and Moon do look like a step up from X and Y. What I will give you, though, is that Capcom KNOWS how to optimize games for the 3DS.
@Megumi_Sagano Well, it's a spinoff with it's own anime on the way; not exactly main series.
@AVahne
not even released
mixed impressions of demos
=turd? The logic of some people... .
Damn I don't want to buy a NX for this game, but I will.
Caption should be : Yep, STILL looks amazing
@CrazedCavalier I dunno. I'm with @Jeronan on this one. Yo-Kai Watch looks a lot better than the latest pokemon series. I never understood why they look so jagged, but Yo-Kai Watch looks a whole lot smoother.
@CrazedCavalier Not from the footage we have seen so far.
Graphics look exactly the same as in X/Y and OR/AS.
Nothing has changed. It looks just as jagged as usual. Very low-res.
I think it's just their engine, as they are using it since the first DS ( pokemon Black/White ). Plus, it's also just laziness, as they can keep re-using all assets for the next game without extra effort.
I mean, as example. Just look at images and footage of Pokemon Black&White 2 for DS and compare it with the last two releases on 3DS. I rest my case.
Yo-kai watch has a much higher quality production. It's crisp and sharp and not jagged at all. I was (and still am) really impressed.
I want the MH amiibo!!!
The game keeps looking better with each trailer. Hoping for a release date over here soon. Day 1 buy for sure. xD
This game looks AMAZING.
This is gonna be the dynamite that sends off the 3DS as we enter the next generation. Saving the best for last I see.
@Jeronan i just stick with gunlance its so amazing that that giant blast ball ability just doing high amount sof damage at once but its best as a striker style.
This looks brilliant. Better then the mainline series. And those graphics. Hard to believe this is running on the 3DS. Top notch!
@edgedino Hmmm haven't tried any of those weapons yet. Also heard that lance+shield is supposed to be fun.
So much to try still.
@Jeronan with enough skill u never even get hurt but make sure to keep your stamina high. i just dodge circles around astalos and never get hurt once.
So a few months ago it was #MHXfortheWest
Now we need to start up #MHSfortheWest
PLEASE CAPCOM! I NEED TO RIDE A TINY BRACHYDIOS!
