Re: Surprise, Surprise! Super Mario 3D All-Stars Prices Skyrocket As Scalpers Set Up Shop

RadioShadow

@Liam_Doolan
You do realize that any one can set an ebay buy-it-now and set a stupid amount of money for it. I could do this myself if I really wanted to. This is just click bait that makes the writer look stupid.

Now if someone was stupid enough to buy it for that price, then sure, take a screenshot of the sold items and make a news article about it. Although the thing that upsets me about the sold listing is that even if the person doesn't pay, it still counts as sold. Or in some cases, people buying it, and then the seller returns the money to inflate the price of items.

At least with the physical version, shops can still sell copies. While they can't get any more copies to stock up, I bet they still have plenty of copies to sell. This game sold really well from what I can tell, so this isn't going to inflate the price of the game. Second hand copies I think will sell for around the same price.

At the time of this post, thegamecollection, Argos and Tesco (I think) still have copies.

Re: Memory Pak: When Ace Attorney Pulled A Game Of Thrones-Level Twist

@KateGray
I have an objection to these statements:
"I do want to address the elephant in the room - well, it's quite a small elephant, since some of you probably weren't thinking this, so it's more of a... llama in the room. Mia's death does fall into the trope of "fridging", a reference to "Women In Refrigerators", a term coined by writer Gail Simone in 1999. The trope is a general name for the often-seen practice of women being killed (or kidnapped, or abused, etc. etc. etc.) to further the story or abilities of the male protagonist, reducing a female character to little more than a plot device."

"Fridging isn't great representation for women in media, and it's so prevalent in video games that it has its own page on TVTropes - but Mia doesn't stay in the fridge, making her a little different."

The way I see this, you are applying the writers are sexist because the leading role is a male (Phoenix), and the female (Mia) is killed just to help move the story along? I think that is a stretch.

I feel sorry when people design characters, because what ever they pick, someone is going to be unhappy. Like if you make a character white, you're not representing black people. Just silly stuff like that.

Keep in mind that yes, Phoenix isn't the best lawyer, but that might have been done to make the game more interesting. Let's be honest, if he was prefect, the game would be boring. It's more interesting to have a noob lawyer rise to the top (whether they are male or female isn't relevant).

Now Mia (age 27 in the first game) has had a lot more experience than Phoenix, so she of course has the advantage of being the better character. While it is bit sudden she gets killed in the second case, her background and personality does shine throughout the series, showing she is a strong and intelligent woman, who is ready to help people out. The use of her sister Maya (and Pearl) to channel her works well, and her two cases in the third game help with that well.
So I would say she is a decent female role model that males and females can look up to. However, her choice of clothing while doing her job could be better (female lawyers would cover up their cleavage) . Of course, it's a video game, and something like this I don't take too seriously.

You say Mia death's was to help further the story? The script was written so Phoenix would always be the main character. Mia was written in a clever way that she is a mentor to Phoenix while alive and dead. She's certainly not a character that is only relevant to one case.
Now say Case 2 involved Red White murdering someone else. I don't think much would have been changed. Mia would still help Pheonix out, but this time being alive. Case 3 and 4 wouldn't even need to be changed, with her having minor roles (Maya Fey would most likely still be the one helping Phoenix out).

To end my statement, I don't think people see Mia of falling into the trope of "fridging". My points have proven that. That article you linked seems like they are trying to make something seem "sexist" because women are always murdered (again, males get murdered as well, the gender isn't an issue). It would be like looking for a pattern that doesn't exist. Imagine if I said the Ace Attorney series was sexist because only females can channel spirits? While the series doesn't explain why, I don't feel it really matters. This doesn't make males any-less inferior to females.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Joins Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 As A New Playable Character

RadioShadow

Sonic has two interesting voice clips:
"Talk about mean beans."
"It doesn't matter. ♪"

The first being a reference to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, while the other being a reference to Sonic's theme from Sonic Adventure. I did check the Japanese voice clips, and they are different.

I'm sure Dr. Robotnik will be added in the next update. Still, a fantastic free update! Pipipi!

Wouldn't "Poke" and "Poké" be considered two different words? Is the word "Poke" trademarked? To me, Nintendo are unhappy with her using copyright Pokémon images. She would have been fine keeping the name.

@ivory_soul
From what I understood, he was aware he couldn't keep using "Angry Nintendo Nerd" as he was planning on selling merchant, trademarking the name, etc. So he changed it to "Angry Video Game Nerd". I don't remember there being any C&D involved.

Re: Feature: No More Robots Boss On How Switch eShop Is Pushing Publishers To Game The System

RadioShadow

The problem is that too much stuff is getting released every week that:

  • I don't care too check.
  • Doesn't feel exciting when something new comes out.
  • Miss out on some good games.

One game "Refreshing Sideways Puzzle Ghost Hammer" that came out in Jan 2020 looks like a decent puzzle game, and I only know about it because Legends of Localization talked about the bad translation: https://legendsoflocalization.com/this-be-bad-translation-19-refreshing-sideways-puzzle-ghost-hammer/

I do look at the discount games, and if something looks good and is cheap, then I most likely don't mind wasting say 99p on the game (especially if the game doesn't have a demo). The worse case is the game is bad, and I just uninstall it, or I enjoy the game and have fun with it.

Of course, games having demos does help, especially if the game is at a higher price.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 3D Sonic Game?

RadioShadow

@GX_64 @dartmonkey
Well Shadow the Hedgehog (which had a GameCube release) is considered a spin-off, hence why it's not included... How is it a spin-off? It still has the 3D charm of the adventure series, but with the option of using guns and vehicles.

I would argue that Secret Rings and Black Knight were more spin-offs, which played more like auto-runners than 3D platform adventures.

If we are just comparing Sonic 3D games that can only be played on Nintendo consoles, then make that clear in the title.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 3D Sonic Game?

RadioShadow

@dartmonkey
I know Sonic 3D Blast/Flickies' Island has 3D in it's title, but it's not really a true 3D game. You run around in a 3D field, but it's using sprites to give off the illusion it's 3D. Point is, if you are going to include Sonic 3D Blast, then Sonic Labyrinth (Game Gear) should be added as well. Be consistent!

Also, you missed Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #39 - Wetrix

RadioShadow

I hope Nintendolife talk about the box art for "Advance Wars: Dual Strike". The Japanese box is just plain terrible. Why use plastic figures? No wonder Advance Wars flopped in Japan.
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ds/924889-advance-wars-dual-strike/images

@KingMike
ヰ (Wi) and ヱ (We) are obsolete characters in modern Japanese, which is why they don't go with ヱトス (Wetosu) for the title.

So they instead use ウェ to make the ヱ (We) sound instead. So this makes the Japanese title: ウェトス (U~etosu)

This makes me wonder, do Japanese players pronounce it as we do in English, or use the Katakana pronunciation?

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Puzzle Games

@CharlieGirl
Are you colorblind yourself? Someone at my workplace is color blind, and he has trouble identifying blues and purples (which ironically they sent him on a dumb course to know what color category a person is XD).

Puyo Tetros / Champions allows you to change the style of the Puyo and Tetris pieces. One of the Puyo options allows the Puyos to display the first letter of the color:
R = Red
B = Blue
G = Green
Y = Yellow
B = Black

I don't know how helpful that is to people who are colorblind, and personally, I would prefer matching colors instead of letters.

Puyo 2 Sega Ages for the Switch does have an option where you can change the colors of each of the Puyos. So the colors you are having trouble identifying, you can set to what is easier on your eyes. It maybe worth giving that version a go if you want to try the Puyo series.

Re: Guide: Where To Pre-order PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 Mini

@Oakleyleeds
It seems all versions are using USB micro-b: https://www.konami.com/games/pcemini/feature/jp/ja/

Like the SNES/NES Mini, it requires a 5V DC to power (which is what USB provides https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#Connector_types). It looks like you have to buy AC Adapter separator, but it comes with a USB micro-b cable.

So you can just plug the USB end into a device that has a USB slot (power must be on), or buy an AC adapter USB Micro B which the right plug for your country.

Re: Review: SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo 2 - A Fun But Ultimately Forgettable Puzzler

RadioShadow

A lot of people are saying "well there's the SNES version" on the app. I dunno, due to the SNES having low resolution, the area feels squashed. One of the tracks has changed and sounds horrible. Despite this version supporting 4 players, it only allows 2 human players.

I will agree that since Puyo Champions has a working online, it's hard to get excited about this version. Still, I like Puyo, and having the Aracde verion on my Switch is a nice version to go and play.

Re: Play Animal Crossing: New Horizons In Style With These New Switch Controllers

RadioShadow

I have the Power A Peach Shadow controller, and it's honestly not the worse controller. I actually really like the D-Pad, and it's perfect for playing games like Puyo Puyo Champions. The buttons are decent as well. The Analogue Sticks know are let down by being too large, and sometimes I don't feel I have enough on them. Saying that, playing Mario Kart 8 DX works fine enough. The biggest issue know is I had to take it apart twice to clean the insides of the left analogue stick to stop it drifting.

These Animal Crossing controllers look like they have smaller and better analogue sticks. So they could fix the issue I have with the controller I have. Although it's probably best to stick with the Pro Controller.

Re: Universal Creative CCO Says Super Nintendo World Is A "Living Video Game"

RadioShadow

@Anti-Matter
If you're talking about more than one item, and the word ends with a h, you add es on the end (so witch > witches). If the word belongs to someone, you put: 's on the end (witch > witch's).

For example: Mario bought some peaches from the store and took them to Peach's Castle.

Hope that helps. The English language does have some strange rules.

Re: Super Nintendo World News Is Imminent, Says Universal Japan

@xpownz
I'm going to Japan in September, and it's going to cost around £5000. Kept in mind, this is for 3 weeks and includes the flights, breakfast, hotels, theme park, tourist attractions, etc. Japan isn't the cheapest country to visit, but I'm sure I will enjoy it.

@matdub
I think they are talking about Universal Studios Japan. From what I heard, the Back To The Future Ride is still there.
