Sega has announced it's bringing Sonic the Hedgehog as a playable character to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 in a brand new update today. It may or may not be related to "something special" it plans to share on an official Twitch live stream later today.
Sonic the Hedgehog will be one of four new playable characters joining the roster in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Alongside this, it's also adding a "Boss Battle with everyone" online mode and much more. Here are the full details, courtesy of Gematsu:
Four new characters added:
Sonic (from Sonic the Hedgehog series)
Lidelle
Ms. Accord
Ocean Prince
“Boss Battle with Everyone” added to online modes. Up to four players can work together to defeat boss characters with Skill Battle rules to earn tons of experience points and powerful Item Cards you can only get here.
New Item Cards added.
Ring
Barrier
Spiked Iron Ball
Many cute new My Icons added.New background music added:
“Tropical Resort – Act 1” (Sonic the Hedgehog series)
“Lidelle’s Earnest Wish (Lidelle’s Theme)”
“Ms. Accord’s Lesson (Accord’s Theme)”
“Dignity of the Prince (Ocean Prince’s Theme)”

Very cool. Tropical Resort – Act 1 being added as a song is really neat too.
Robotnik is not pleased....
Add Dr.Robotnik into the game and I'll buy it.
Seems like Robotnik really should have been the character that got added given his history with Puyo Puyo.
Now i'm even more happy, that i got the 2nd game. Sonic is always a plus. I would even be happier, if they added Tails, Knuckles and Shadow instead of the other 3

Oh nice. Would've preferred a more well known Sonic tune but his inclusion and Japanese voice option (the obnoxious voice acting in the original put me right off getting it) makes it much more appealing than the original.
Is the online play easy to find a game?
It is, but online is tough, if you're not a Tetris expert, you're getting crushed

@Nintendo4Sonic Thanks! I'm good at Tetris and came first in Tetris 99 nine times so I'll probably stand a good shot, as that's pretty tough online too!

I don't think any of the characters in this game are 'playable'. They float about, but don't you control the position of little shapes or blobs?

I'm just going to get this game bc sonics in it.
I'm not even all that much of a Tetris fan. But since Puyo Puyo Tetris came out on Switch, I played it almost religiously. This game doesn't seem to grip me either, but I'll probably like it enough to want to buy it and play it non-stop. Tetris can grip anyone like that and they've added more then enough content to the first game to make it enjoyable for anyone. Just building on whats already in the first game for the second and adding new ideas will definitely make this second iteration a strong seller.

We are one step closer to having the Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Tetris Machine mod becoming real.
I'll never understand why these puzzle games always have the worst sounding character voices.
But the game still looks like fun tbh
Putting Sonic in essentially what is suppose to be Dr. Robotnik's first game is criminal. The good oh doctor will have his revenge someday.
Sonic has two interesting voice clips:
"Talk about mean beans."
"It doesn't matter. ♪"
The first being a reference to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, while the other being a reference to Sonic's theme from Sonic Adventure. I did check the Japanese voice clips, and they are different.
I'm sure Dr. Robotnik will be added in the next update. Still, a fantastic free update! Pipipi!
I think this is the thing Sega mentioned that would be "special" in that live stream. (PPT 2 1 hour ago)
