Puzzle mash-up Puyo Puyo Tetris was one of the highlights of the Switch's early software lineup, and it's getting a sequel later this year.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will showcase all of the modes from the original, alongside the new "Skill Battle" mode which introduces character-based skills and item cards.
There's also a new "Adventure" mode in which players can "traverse space and dimensions never seen before in a new story, with a colourful cast of cute characters, bringing to life the power of Tetriminos and Puyos."
As if that wasn't enough, the game's online mode has been expanded with the ability to spectate matches.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 launches on Switch on December 8th.

I liked the first game but it's not something I really need a sequel to on the same system.
this game will now be rated T For teen, Puyo Puyo Tetris 3 will be rated M for mature. Seriously, how is this game E10 Plus, Its just tetris!?
@LatsaSpege
It's the Puyo Puyo side of things.
@BenAV Pretty much what I thought... also the thing I was most excited by in the direct, which kind of sets the tone really.
@MS7000 I'm interested in the Taiko games but those and this are about all that grabbed my attention. Skipped through most of the rest of the video. That's pretty typical of third party studios for me though. I usually find myself more drawn to first party and indie titles.
@BenAV Part of me was hoping for a surprise Rhythm Heaven announcement based on the rhythm games being announced, but then I remembered that it is a partner showcase; Nintendo ain't showing nothing.
@MS7000 Hopefully one day.
Aw what? Is this the big holiday title lol!? I am pleased, I played the first one with my friends and fiance so much over the years, this is day one for me.
@BenAV It's because it's also a Series X and PS5 game.
Yay, more Puyo Puyo! Instant buy!
@LatsaSpege
The rating is probably because of Schezo again. Look up his dialogue from the first game, it's pretty good.
This is quite possibly the most derivative video game sequel I have ever seen, even more so than the likes of Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP) and Final DOOM.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game, hell, I would have also bought it on 3DS and Wii U had those versions been released internationally, but ironically, I see little value in this sequel, at least not enough to justify spending another AU$60. I'll most likely wait for a sale.
Alright more Puyo Puyo! If this is the big holiday game Sega's putting out, I'd be ok with that. Loved the first and Champions. Come to think of it, the first even made me track down a copy of the older Puyo Pop GBA game wanting more Puyo Puyo. I am very happy with this news.
AHHHH!!! I literally JUST bought the first game.... dang it!!
@BenAV exactly. I don’t want to write this off before it’s released, but barring something pretty fantastic, I can’t imagine this would be a buy, unless deeply discounted.
That said, I encourage others out there to give this a shot. It’s a cool game.
Eh, I'm good. First one was OK, but Tetris 99 better serves my Tetris needs these days. Probably doesn't help that I don't really like the Puyo Puyo side of the game.
I'd love a Tetris Effect port.
If only Sega made more good games from their other IPs just like how they milk Puyo Puyo, then this gen would had been fantastic. For every one Puyo Puyo, they could had given us Vectorman 3, Ristar 2, Phantasy Star V, Shining Force IV, and Skies of Arcadia Legends 2.
I’ve been playing the demo of the first game for years now. Never felt the need to buy it, so I’m really hoping they do a demo for this too!
The first was amazing and the best Puyo Puyo and Tetris games on Switch in my opinion, so seeing this announced got me hyped to the MAX!!
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
@retro_player_77 What universe are you living in where Puyo Puyo is milked to death
Now that there's Tetris 99 on here I'm not sure I care, I certainly barely play the original, and if so, it's to play Tetris vs. Tetris with my wife, never really got into the Puyo aspect as much
@LatsaSpege The first one had a ton of adult jokes in the story mode. Why? I don't know.
The first one still gets regular play from me. I must have bought tetris about 5 times down the years. I don’t see a compelling reason to buy the sequel.
I’d love to be able to TATE mode Tetris and play with the pro.
@StephenYap3
The first game was indeed amazing, but I'm not seeing enough new content here to warrant a purchase
This was an nice surprise , and would love to play the sequel as I enjoyed the first game.
@RushDawg To each their own.
I'm more than willing to pay the full $60 on Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 if needed as long as I get plenty of modes and content at the end of the day.
@N00BiSH Japan
@HammerKirby Hey, that's pretty funny!
@LatsaSpege
Schezo. That's all I can say.
The original plays a tighter game of Tetris than Tetris 99, but multiplayer playing Tetris against a Puyo Puyo player was unbalanced (Puyo players seemingly having the advantage).
@coderkind
I had heard that Tetris players had the advantage
@LatsaSpege have you seen the look on the Puyos faces when they Explode?! Such violence!
@RushDawg apparently at high level play, but not for plebs like myself
I liked the first game and also like each individual game this is made up from, it therefore follows.....
